Effectiveness of Agricultural Training Centers' Curriculum in Promoting Adoption of Agricultural Technologies: Evidence from Small-scale Potato Farmers in Nyandarua County, Kenya International Journal of Agricultural Management and Development (IJAMAD)
A gricultural Training Centres (ATCs) promote crop and livestock development by providing extension information to farmers and serving as models of improved crop and livestock husbandry practices. Although potato farmers in Nyandarua County were trained on potato production technologies, their average yield was ≤ 16 tonnes per hectare compared to the national potential of 30 tonnes. This study therefore sought to determine the effectiveness of ATCs' curriculum in promoting farmers' adoption of selected potato production technologies in Nyandarua County in Kenya. A survey design was used. Primary data was collected from 136 farmers trained at ATCs on potato production using interview schedules. The respondents were sampled through a five-stage technique. The data was analysed using T-test and ANOVA, then summarized into percentages. The study sought to establish the influence of respondents? socio-demographic characteristics on adoption of Horticulture farming among small scale farmers in Nandi County, Kenya. A cross-sectional survey research design was employed and a sample of 400 respondents was systematically selected. A well structured Questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion and Key Informant Interviews were the main data collection tools used. Pearsons correlation test was used to establish relationships among variables under study. The study assessed the influence of gender, age, level of education, land size and income control. Findings showed that these factors influenced adoption of horticulture farming among the respondents in differing extents. Although horticulture farming has not been extensively embraced as the main commercial crop, respondents expressed high acceptability, rated it as highly compatible with their farming objectives and expressed a high inclination towards their further adoption. Various horticultural crops were planted by respondents namely kale, cabbages, bananas, traditional vegetables (managu, saka, mitoo and kunde), tomatoes, passion fruits and pineapples. However, among the various crops planted by the respondents horticultural crops came in fourth in terms of the proportion of land allocated to them. The study recommends that there is need to sensitize farmers on the benefits of engaging in the production such high value crops. The government also needs to come up with programmes that would provide information and train farmers on the trends that are taking shape on farming within the region and globally. Furthermore, agricultural promotions need to be targeted well among potential adopters considering that study has revealed the nature of farmers that are well placed to adopt innovations.

Farmer Field School (FFS) approach is an adult education intervention that uses intensive discovery-based learning to promote skills. The approach is based on the idea that the best learning comes from experience, particularly in the case of potato farmers, from field observations. Hence, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Farmer Field School Approach in disseminating technologies for improving farmers' knowledge and adoption of cultivation practices related to seed potato cultivations in Sri Lanka. The stratified purposive sampling technique was performed to select 40 seed potato farmers who participated in FFS programs (FFS group) and another 40 farmers who were not attended the same (NFFS Group) living in five Agricultural Instructor (AI) ranges in the Kandy district in Sri Lanka. A cross-sectional field survey was administrated using pretested questionnaire followed by focus group discussions to collect primary data on socioeconomic status, knowledge and adoption level, yield and cost of production, etc., and also farmers' attitude towards the FFS approach on five dimensions (Effectiveness, Efficiency, Relevance, Impact, Sustainability). The qualitative parameters of the above were measured using 5 points Likert scales and developing indexes and applying descriptive analysis, hypothesis testing, and inferential analysis using the Ordered Logistic Regression model to measure variables and explain the relationship among the tested parameters using SPSS statistical package. A significant difference was observed between FFS and NFFS seed potato growers in terms of knowledge, field practices adoption, land productivity, and production cost. The Ordered Logistic Regression model findings reveal that the model as a whole fit significantly at a 95% confidence level. Pseudo R square expresses that 26.75 % proportion of the variance in adoption level significantly improved the recommended potato cultivation practices as explained by seven independent variables (Education at 2 levels, Experience, Index of Social Participation, Group dynamics, Satisfaction, and Sustainability). Hence, this study proved that the Farmer Field School approach is effective as an agricultural innovation and dissemination platform in all dimensions for significantly improving farmers' Knowledge and adoption level of cultivation practices leading to increased productivity and profitability.
