High School Memories Essay: We often think of a moment as a snapshot in time that is captured by our memories. However, what we perceive as a good memory will depend on our environment and the way we felt at the time. In one person’s memory, an event may be something to cherish and celebrate while in another person’s memory, an event might be something to forget.

We can’t look back on our past without being biased or filtered by what we currently know or have been through. Moreover, our memories are not factual and never perfect: they reflect how we feel about ourselves and the world around us at that moment in time. In other words, memories are inherently partial or selective. As soon as we begin to think about recalling something, our brains start to filter out all sorts of details, which might be irrelevant or not entirely accurate. Regardless, individuals who have completed their high school have fond memories of the same. For these people, it was a time of self-discovery and exploration. In this essay, we shall explore a few nostalgic highschool memories and important life lessons learnt from the same.

What are the Best Memories of Our High School Life?

It is a well known fact that high school students are the most impressionable people in the world. When a student enters a new school they are entering a new world with different social norms, values, and rules. They must endure cliques, bullying, and teachers who may not care about them as much as their previous teachers.

However, looking back on high school now is an interesting experience. It was a time for new friendships, meeting new people, and getting used to a new environment. But for some, it’s also a time of dread. For others, high school was a time of crippling anxiety and stress. Regardless, high school memories are an important milestone in our lives that we will never forget. It’s the place where we met our friends, where we socialised, and where we started to get into careers that would shape the rest of our lives.

High school is an important time in everyone’s life and it can be hard to remember all of the great moments. A great way to document these memories is to take a class picture. However, not all schools have a photographer come in and take pictures every year. Luckily, most high schools allow students to bring their mobile phones or cameras on special occasions. Some schools are more relaxed with their mobile phone policies and may allow students to carry and use them under certain conditions.

On the other hand, a cold and distant relationship will hardly leave any pleasant memories. College years are also often fraught with nostalgia, especially for parents who can’t stop reminiscing about their own college days. However, for some parents, college years may seem more like a distant memory. There are a number of reasons for this- For example, the young adults they used to be are now adults with jobs and families of their own. Life changes so quickly, and it can become difficult to keep up.

Memories with Friends and Classmates in High School

Memories with friends in high school are often the best memories in our lives. Moreover, the friends in high school are probably closer to you than any other kind of friends. In most cases, these are the people that have been with you through everything since elementary school. They have watched you grow up and change, they have seen your flaws and supported you through difficult times. In other words, friends make high school better. They can find joy in each other, and create a support system for themselves and their peers. While the culture of “cool kids” still prevails in many schools, there are also many students who are not part of this clique. For these students, friends are often their only source of happiness.

It is important to remember what you learned from your teachers, not just for the sake of remembering, but because they are the ones who shape our future. They are responsible for shaping our views of the world and its people, they are responsible for shaping our knowledge base. Teachers are responsible for more than just what happens in the classroom. They play an important role in shaping how students see the world. They introduce their students to new ideas and help them learn to think critically.

“Not-so-good” Memories in High School

Bullying can have a devastating impact on the lives of both the victim and the perpetrator. Bullies are often misguided teenagers who have been on the receiving end of other bullies themselves. When they don’t know how to handle being called names, they resort to bullying someone else. High-school bullies need to understand that their actions can have long-lasting consequences for themselves and others.

Life Lessons from High School

The modern teenager is confronted with a vastly different set of issues than their predecessors encountered. Recent studies have also found that while most parents are confident in their teenagers’ ability to handle difficult or traumatic situations, many admit that they are unprepared for the realities of today’s world. Regardless, students need to be prepared for what’s to come and learn to thrive in today’s society. Some important lessons that students should learn in high school are:

  • Importance of teamwork: Teamwork is the need of the hour. When students are part of a team, they get more done in less time. For instance, when students work together with their teammates on a project, they are able to complete more in less time with the help of people who have different skill sets.
  • The importance of life skills: Students need to be equipped with life skills in order to succeed in today’s society. These skills include financial literacy, time management, and prioritizing tasks. Students who don’t have these skills will find it more difficult to find employment and balance their personal life.
  • The importance of money management: It is important for children to be financially literate in order to avoid the pitfalls of unwise financial decisions when they grow up. Financial literacy educates and empowers people to make informed personal financial decisions. Moreover, financial literacy can help students become less susceptible to fraud.
  • The importance of good manners : Good manners are a way of showing respect to not only humans, but animals and even the environment. When we have good manners, it is easier to live in harmony with others. Moreover, when people observe how courteous we are, most will naturally return the favour and be kind to us as well.
  • The importance of honesty and integrity: Honesty and integrity are two primary virtues that define a person’s character. When a person possesses these attributes, they will have the confidence to stand up for themselves and their beliefs.
  • T he importance of responsibility: Responsibility is a general moral obligation to do something. It can also refer to the state of being responsible for one’s actions. Responsibility is not just an obligation, but it is also the capacity to live up to expectations.
  • To Lose Gracefully: Losing with grace is an art form that many people have yet to master. It’s important to know when it’s time to give up on a project or relationship.
  • Importance of Compassion and Forgiveness : Compassion and forgiveness are essential to living a happy life. When we are compassionate, forgiving, and kind to ourselves and others, it can help us reduce stress, anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, jealousy and other negative emotions which can lead to physical health problems. High school is arguably the most transformative time of a person’s life. My own experience has been filled with more memories, laughter, stress, and — most importantly, growth — than I ever could have anticipated when I began. 

The lessons I have learned about myself, about others, and about the world in the last four years have shaped who I am today, and that person is far from the naive 14-year-old girl who walked through those glass doors of La Salle nearly four years ago. I was oblivious to the overwhelming emotional distress that I would feel when I started high school. 

In some ways, it feels like an everyday battle. 

As a freshman, the struggle began with adjusting to what felt like a whole new world. I was desperately trying to make friends, considering I had only one. I never knew what it was like to feel alone in a school with so many people. I felt like I had to act a certain way or be a certain person in order to maintain a basic conversation with people in my classes or on my soccer team. 

Every day, my head was filled with an overwhelming concern about how I could manage to make myself look like someone with more friends than I actually had at the time. 

I remember constantly thinking, “I’ll start enjoying this at some point, right?” 

The truth is, I did. 

To anyone who is feeling the way I once felt, please know that those feelings do go away. By the end of my freshman year and into the next, I enjoyed myself. School wasn’t particularly challenging, and I was spending my weekends having fun with my friends and going to basketball games and sleepovers. I had finally created a routine and felt mostly content with my life, aside from daunting thoughts in my head telling me it was all a lie.

I think that’s something that all teenagers deal with. It comes with the age, the questions, “do my friends actually like me?” or “am I enough?” — “do people worry about me or have I tricked myself into thinking they do?” 

I continued to move throughout my sophomore year feeling a new level of comfort with my life. Then, the pandemic hit. 

The original two weeks of quarantine turned into two months, and then two years. The predictable high school experience I had become accustomed to was no longer my reality, and instead, high school turned into an atypical rollercoaster of isolation from all the essential parts of the experience. 

To say it was hard would be an understatement, but after the initial forced adjustment to a remote life, I was forced to be content without relying on others.

Without having to fear other people’s judgments of me or having to conceal myself in social situations to appear more “acceptable,” I gained independence and confidence within myself that I didn’t know existed.

Then finally — after over a year — the long-awaited return to school arrived. 

I rejoiced in my ability to thrive academically again and I was so relieved to feel like I was really learning. I reconnected with my friends, ate lunch outside, took finals, and then — after a blur of two months — the year ended. My junior year flew by like no other. 

When senior year rolled around, I felt out of place. I couldn’t imagine a world where I belonged to the oldest class at the school. In the beginning, it was odd getting used to, but after a few weeks, it was nothing but a thrill as I planned what the next weekend alongside my friends would hold. 

My friendships were flourishing and I was becoming closer and closer with people I had never really gotten to know. 

Unlike the three years prior, my senior year has felt like a stereotypical high school experience, and I could not be more grateful for it. 

I always thought of myself as someone who was above enjoying things like attending soccer games, getting ready for homecoming with my friends, singing karaoke in someone’s basement, or going to a trampoline park for an 18-year-old’s birthday party. 

The truth is, I’m not. 

I regret that I spent so long depriving myself of the things I love in order to fit a narrative that I created for myself. 

I love that I will graduate high school happier and more fulfilled than I ever felt during my other three years here. It feels like everything has finally come full circle, after all these years of feeling so alone. 

So yes, it was transformative. I am finally content with the person I have become and the life I have chosen to lead. I wouldn’t be the same without La Salle and I wouldn’t be the same without the people I’ve gotten to know here. 

I know that I will look back on my high school experience here, not feeling critical of the insecurities I have felt, but feeling grateful for the memories and lessons that came regardless of them.

The English Romantic Poet Robert Southey believed that “The first 20 years are the longest half of your life, no matter how long you might live.”

Memory researchers have in fact identified something called " The Reminiscence Bump ," which confirms that the strongest memories for the events in our lives come from things that happened to us between the ages of 10 and 30.

Why the High School Years are Special

For many people, the most vividly remembered and emotionally charged of those years are spent in high school. Unrequited romantic crushes; chronic embarrassment ; desperate struggles for popularity; sexual awakening; parental pressure. And above all else, competition : social, athletic, academic, and otherwise. The angst of these years follows us through life, and the conflicted feelings so many of us harbor about high school fuel the popularity of TV shows and movies like Beverly Hills 90210 , Mean Girls, Heathers, The Breakfast Club, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High , to name just a few.

What is it about this time of life that makes it stand out from the rest of our years? Part of it is undoubtedly due to changes in the brain's sensitivity to certain types of information during adolescence , but this is not the whole story.

For some of us, high school shines like an enchanted kingdom compared to which every other stage of life falls short. [ See one of my earlier blogs about “ happiness ” that may partially explain this. ] For others, it is remembered as an endless Hell of daily torments. For most of us, it is something in between, but emotional nonetheless. And strong emotions equal strong memories; even the music from those years gets imprinted on our brain like nothing that comes later.

I believe that many factors interact to make our teenage memories so vivid, but it is primarily the collision between the evolved psychological mechanisms needed for success in our ancestral hunter-gatherer world and the modern institution of the high school that is responsible.

As far as scientists can tell, our prehistoric forebears lived in relatively small groups where they knew everyone else in a face-to-face, long-term way. Most people would live out their entire life in this group, and one’s social standing within it was determined early on – during adolescence .

How much one was admired as a warrior or hunter, how desirable one was perceived to be as a mate, and how much trust and esteem was accorded to one by others—all was sorted out in young adulthood. A person deemed to be a loser at 18 was unlikely to rise to a position of prominence at 40. Thus, from an evolutionary perspective, the competition of the teen years was in fact a life-and-death affair.

In our modern world, one can of course move off to new places after graduation and start over.

However, even though we may be consciously aware of this (to the extent that we are consciously aware of anything when we are teenagers), the psychological buttons that get pushed in the adolescent brain make the importance of our social lives override everything else. Popularity with peer groups can become an obsession, since it is the people in your own age cohort against whom you will be ranked forever. After all, your adult status primarily depends upon how you stack up compared to them, not to others.

Also, strong conformity pressures insure that you do not stray too far from the group’s values; ostracism from the group in prehistoric times was tantamount to a death sentence. One's teenage self strives to cement inclusion in the group at all costs. Further, one needs to be able to forge alliances with others and demonstrate loyalty to these individuals, resulting in a splintering of the social world into competing cliques that grind each other up in the gears of the social hierarchy.

Conflict with parents is usually inevitable at this time. Parents are vitally concerned with their children’s success, but their perspective is usually more long-term compared to the teen's. So, the things that the parent thinks that the child should be concerned with and the things that the child is emotionally driven to actually be concerned with are often quite different. How the high-schooler chooses to spend leisure time, and whom he or she chooses to date or hang out with, can become a real minefield.

Hormones fuel the “showing off” of qualities that would have increased one’s market value in early societies. In young men, we still reward to some extent the things that would have been essential for success in hunting and combat—the willingness to take risks, and skills such as fighting ability, running fast, clubbing things, and throwing things with velocity and accuracy. For young women, the advertisement of youth and fertility through all of the usual standards of beauty becomes a significant criterion by which they are judged.

Our Cognitive Biases

A related social skill that would have had a big payoff in earlier times is the ability to remember details about the temperament, predictability, and past behavior of individuals who were personally known to you; there would have been little use for a mind designed to engage in abstract statistical thinking about large numbers of unknown outsiders.

In today’s world, it is advantageous to be able to think in terms of probabilities and percentages when it comes to people, because predicting the behavior of the strangers we deal with in everyday life requires that we do so. This task is difficult for many of us because the early wiring of the brain was guided by different needs. Thus, natural selection shaped a thirst for, and a memory to store information about, specific people. We needed to remember who treated us well and who did not—the more emotional the memory, the less likely we are to forget it. This strong propensity for holding grudges protects us from being taken advantage of again, but can also make for some uncomfortable, anxiety -arousing moments at high school reunions.

To further complicate things, high school is probably the last time in life when people of all sorts are thrown together for no other reason than they are the same age and live in the same area.

Yes, high schools are often segregated by economic background and race, but for many there is still more of a mix in day-to-day life than they will encounter later. After high school, people begin to sort themselves out according to intelligence , political values, occupational interests, and a wide range of other social screening devices.

At the same time, however, the people you knew in high school remain your default group for engaging in social comparison precisely because they are the same age as you and because they started out in the same place, so there is typically a degree of interest in finding out what happened to them later in life if for no other reason than to help you figure out your feelings about your own life.

The high school life days are very much filled with excitement. During high school life period, one becomes matured enough to understand the value of time. My high school life is a wonderful chapter in my entire memories. In that period I learned truly. I directed myself. I learned dedication, hard work, motivation and self actualization.

This is the period when I started working hard. Thanks to that hard work done, today I am happy with my career. I believe, what you learn during high school life or college life, it truly impacts the rest of your life.

One of my best high school memory was the day when I won prize in annual inter schools science fair. It was the moment of great pride for me, my parents and for my school. The Principal of our school gave me a shield. That shied is still with me.

I always had the habit, during my school life, to note down everything on a diary. During my free time I always open that diary. It helps me soothes my pain. It fulfills me with confidence and courage. I miss a lot friend of mine. I have a good amount of school life pictures.

Those school life pictures are like my best memories. I remember the days we celebrated, the extracurricular activities we took part in. I remember how happy were my parent when I obtain first position in my entire school. That’s the best part of my school life. It never let me be bored.

It is said that a person always remembers his first day at school and the last day at school. The first day a child remembers because he came there weeping. And the last day a student remember because he left the school weeping again. In my case, I remember clearly my first day at school and my last day at the school. The joys of school life are surely countless. Indeed, the school days are the best of our lives.

But high school wasn’t just about academics and extracurriculars; it was also a time for personal growth. The four years of high school taught me valuable life lessons that I’ll carry with me forever. From learning how to deal with failures to building strong relationships with my peers, high school taught me the importance of resilience and self-growth.

However, like any other journey, my high school experience had its fair share of challenges. From dealing with peer pressure to balancing academics and extracurriculars, there were times when I felt overwhelmed. But these challenges only made me stronger and pushed me to become the best version of myself.

In conclusion, my high school life has been a rollercoaster ride filled with unforgettable moments, valuable lessons, and personal growth. I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today.

Growing up, school was a huge part of my life. It was where I spent most of my days, learning new things and making memories with my friends. However, there was one particular experience that stood out to me and has stayed with me till this day.

Making Memories: Why the Things You Remember About High School Will Surprise You

Senior year of high school is a busy time to be a teenager, even aside from the work you’ll put into applying to college. It’s also full of events that are specifically designed to serve as capstones for your high school experience, like prom and graduation. As you reach the end of the year, these events will come on thick and fast.

You may find that these senior events are a lot of fun and a chance to end high school on a high note. However, you might also find yourself worrying about whether you’re doing the right things to enjoy these events properly. After all, you’re supposed to remember these milestones for the rest of your life, right?

Not always. The memories you really treasure from high school may come from unexpected places, and some of the best memories won’t be formed in scheduled, traditional events. You never know which experiences will shape, inspire, or affect you in retrospect. As someone who’s been out of high school for over a decade, here’s what I’ve learned about memories, formative experiences, and the pressure to enjoy traditional graduation-related events.

There’s a Last Time for Everything

If you haven’t watched older friends or siblings experience their senior year of high school—or maybe even if you have—you might be surprised at just how unrelenting the senior year event parade really is. All those activities and accolades you’ve accumulated, which have helped to make you a competitive college applicant, will only make your schedule more packed with award ceremonies, end-of-year banquets, and other commemorative events.

Towards the end of the year, you might attend prom, senior ceremonies, or other special events with the rest of your class. Then, of course, there’s commencement itself, with special outfits to wear and proud family photos to take, and perhaps graduation parties to attend afterward.

There are also lots of “lasts” to consider—your last performance in the marching band, your last class with a favorite teacher, your last chance at qualifying for the state tournament in your varsity sport, and so on. These might be set up to include special recognition for seniors like you who will be moving on to college.

These events are enjoyable for a lot of students, just as they’re meant to be. However, that tradition of enjoyment can actually make you feel pressured to have a good time and create a memory you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. Sometimes, that’s not what actually happens.

Academic ceremonies aren’t a fun experience for everyone. (Personally, listening to graduation speeches is one of my least favorite activities on earth.) Social events like prom can be less than magical if you’re shy, introverted, or have trouble with friends, or if you simply don’t enjoy dressing up and dancing awkwardly with your entire high school class.

And what if something unexpected interrupts your plans? What if you come down with mono and spend your last weeks of senior year stuck in bed? You might feel like your life—or at least your opportunity to create the treasured memories of high school you’re seeking—is absolutely ruined.

Fortunately, even if unforeseen circumstances intervene to prevent you from participating in the traditional slate of senior events, it’s really, truly not the end of the world. These events can be fun and make you feel like your hard work has been appreciated, or they can be less than enjoyable, but either way, they’re only a very small portion of your overall high school experience.

You’ll have (and you’ve already had) innumerable opportunities to make amazing memories every single day, and these more quotidian memories matter too. In fact, you might very well find that the experiences that stick with you most or become most important to you spring from unexpected sources, not from the events that are intended to produce lasting memories.

The Limitations of Foresight

I’ve been out of high school for a while now, and in my experience, it’s impossible to tell at the time what events and feelings will linger in your memory. You never really know which experiences will change and shape you as you become an adult. However, I’ve noticed a few trends of high school experiences that have turned into treasured memories or windows into who I am.

When I think back on my high school experiences, the things that I still remember clearly and that I know affected me deeply are definitely not the events where I felt pressured to make lasting memories. I barely recall those events; they exist only as stressful blurs in my recollection. Instead, I remember most vividly the experiences that seemed ordinary at the time, but were most closely linked to the people and ideas that made me who I am today.

I remember the hilarious video we made in my tenth grade Spanish class, featuring a painting from our school’s hallway coming to life and terrorizing the (remarkably game) assistant principal. I remember the road trip my dad and I took to visit colleges, one of the first times I ever left my home state, and the way it expanded my world and made a whole new range of possible futures suddenly seem real.

I remember first loves and late-night phone calls, making mischief with my siblings, and diving deep into academic and extracurricular projects that I really cared about. I remember sneaking up on my favorite teacher to surprise her with the news that I’d been accepted to my dream college. I remember momentous arguments with my parents on issues that, long afterward, they thanked me for challenging their positions on. These are the things that have stuck with me.

For some of these experiences, it’s taken me years to see how truly special they were. For others, their ordinariness is exactly the point. The most formative influences of my childhood built up bit by bit, day by day; they didn’t touch my life in one magical moment.

Most of all, I remember events, places, and people that are me-specific. Those are the things that best reflect my life, my circumstances, and what matters (or mattered) most to me. I don’t remember the events that were based on someone else’s idea of what high school students could do; I remember what is and was most personally important to me as a unique person.

Making Memories that Matter to You

So what happens next? What can I do during high school, you might ask, to make sure that I built up a stock of experiences and memories that will really matter to me later in my life?

Well, to some extent, there’s nothing you can do to be sure. There’s no one right way to spend your high school years, and there’s no way to make absolutely certain that you have a perfect experience that’s full of magical memories. Life tends to resist our attempts to make it fit a certain pattern or schedule.

Besides, your college years will be a time of immense change; you’ll be learning new things every day, in the classroom and outside of it. You never know exactly who you’ll be on the other end of that experience, and it’s hard to say what memories Future You will consider especially important. Besides, this process of growth can be, by definition, stressful and challenging.

One piece of advice I would give is to stay open to whatever experiences come your way. Do silly things with your friends. Have long, impromptu conversations. Turn right where you would usually turn left, and see where it takes you. You can plan and schedule all you like, but some of your best memories will come from coincidences and chance meetings.

Allow yourself to fully experience the moment you’re living in, whatever that involves, rather than worrying about whether it meets some arbitrary standard for “good” high school memories. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is very real and can hurt your ability to enjoy the moment. If you spend all your time worrying that you’re not doing what a high school senior is “supposed” to do, all you’ll have to remember will be that experience of worry.

When it comes to choosing how to spend your time during your senior year, be true to yourself. If you’re absolutely sure that the traditional senior year activities that are popular where you live will be more boring or stressful for you than enjoyable or meaningful, don’t feel bad about opting out of some of them.

Some events, like your graduation ceremony itself, may be unavoidable, and your parents will inevitably get a say—this is a big moment for them as well. However, you don’t have to do everything to celebrate or commemorate your senior year.

One of the greatest things about growing older is that you get more of a say in deciding which traditions or practices are truly meaningful for you. You don’t have to do things just because they’re popular or socially expected. Even when you do observe long-standing traditions, you’re free to put your own spin on them.

If you’re feeling stressed about the pressure to do and enjoy things that just aren’t for you, don’t force it. Focus instead on the things that really make you happy and the kinds of memories that you want to make. Though it might seem paradoxical, the best way to build up great memories is to stop worrying so much about doing the correct things to build up great memories, and instead, to fully appreciate whatever comes your way—especially the unexpected.

I, for one, prefer to look back fondly on the unrehearsed, unscheduled, and personally significant things I did in high school. Those memories may not represent anyone else’s idea of a perfect high school experience, but those are also the moments, places, and people that truly made me who I am today. For that, I’m grateful.

You Will Never Outgrow Your High School Self

Which were you? Popular kid, nerd, normal, artist, or loner? Wait, don’t answer that—instead, tell me: What makes that question so seductive?

Not the answer, although the answer may be more important than you realize, according to a long, rich essay by Jennifer Senior in New York Magazine about the enduring grip of our high-school years .

Senior pulls together a wealth of studies on adolescence to argue that our experiences in high school mold how we see ourselves, cope with stress, and relate to others forever . She floats a few explanations for why this might be: Grades nine through 12 coincide with the fine-tuning of the prefrontal cortex, which processes abstractions and controls self-image, so that teenagers are constantly converting their impressions of the outside world into identity-grist. (Senior’s example: I like the Allman Brothers becomes I am the type of person who likes the Allman Brothers. ) And teen brains are bathed in dopamine, which makes them feel everything, the good and the bad, hyperintensely. The teenage years also take on a strange luminance in memory ; it makes sense that oldsters might use those reminiscences as identity building blocks.

While high school is formative, though, it can also be hell. Senior views the fact that it has such a gravitational pull over the rest of our lives as semidisastrous. Her money quote: “Most American high schools are almost sadistically unhealthy places to send adolescents.”

This is a strong claim, but Senior backs it up by discussing how, during this vulnerable time of self-formation and raging emotions, teenagers actually have no idea how to read social cues. They’re laughably bad at figuring out when they’ve been accepted or rejected. She cites a study concluding that only 37 percent of adolescent friendships are reciprocal . At the same time, they are feverishly trying to discover where they stand in a huge, linoleum-tiled terrarium of people with whom they have little in common besides age. Nuances don’t exactly thrive in such a situation—you’re liable to be sorted, labeled, maybe stigmatized, based on some broad stereotype rooted in the clothes you wear or how much weight you need to lose before you look like Taylor Swift. For those of us who weren’t Math Nerds, the equation is: painful sensitivity to what others think of you PLUS uncertainty about what others think of you, thanks to terrible people-reading skills PLUS a general tendency to organize the social world into cliques that don’t really reflect reality EQUALS can I please just graduate, right now? Or, as Senior says, “sadistically unhealthy.”      

Then, she suggests, we carry our dysfunctional high-school dynamics with us into the real world. Outcasts and dorks nurse an eternal shame. Athletes radiate aggression. The one exception, oddly enough, concerns bookish girls and princesses: Though high school royals reported more self-confidence than brains did at age 16, by age 24 the numbers had switched, with the princesses registering higher levels of insecurity and the bookworms feeling, on the whole, pretty OK with themselves. It’s unclear why the same dynamic swap doesn’t happen with the boys. Could it be that—gasp—the adult working world values women more for their minds and characters, which builds confidence?

Full disclosure: I enjoyed high school. Like most people , I am not sure where my peers seated me in the metaphorical cafeteria—to the extent they thought about it—but I always considered myself somewhere between English Nerd, Music Nerd, and Nondescript. (I hope there wasn’t a category for Generally Disliked and Oblivious.) Some of these self-conceptions have held up over time and some haven’t: I don’t play the piano as much as I used to, for instance, so I don’t really think of myself as a music person anymore. But even if the labels no longer apply, I’m still surprised—and a little discomfited—by how much pleasure I take in reminiscing about who fell in what box. It’s a favorite topic when my high-school pals and I meet up: assessing who we were then versus where we are now. In the same way, I love when college or post-college friends reveal their adolescent personas; I even love reading articles like Senior’s, in which the evolving social positions of characters like shy valedictorian Kenji and golden footballer Josh are painstakingly analyzed.

Where does this fascination come from? Why does it persist? Is it just our weakness for nostalgia? A human love of taxonomy? Over at Jezebel, Lindy West responded to the New York piece by giving advice to —and perpetuating—five high-school archetypes: Brains, Princesses, Athletes, Basket Cases, and Criminals. Motherlode columnist KJ Dell’Antonia aimed for a more practical approach, cautioning parents not to let their own high-school biases color the way they deal with their teenage children . “We may still be nerds, pretty girls or jock stars,” she writes, reviving the categories yet again, but “if we can give our teenagers the opportunity to follow their passions toward larger groups of people who share them, they’ll also get a shot at internalizing a broader view of who they are.”

Which is, of course, well and good and desirable. But I can’t help thinking that it’s never going to happen. What makes Dell’Antonio so sure that these “larger groups of people” can even exist in high school? Why should the next generation be any different from ours? We’re half in love with these damaging labels, which once helped us make sense of a bustling, chaotic ecosystem we may never fully leave behind. And to a certain extent, they still help us make sense of the world today. I don’t think they’re going anywhere.

“ Endless Summer Job ” by Carolyn Ferrell (9th grade)

Carolyn Ferrell’s memoir describes her college summer job: working on an estate in the Hamptons. Ferrell shares vivid details of her experience, recollecting the disdain she felt from her employers. Years later, Ferrell has become a successful author and travels to the Hamptons as a guest for the first time. During her trip out to the Hamptons, she bumps into her former employer. During this final exchange, Carolyn is asked to come on as hired help, ending the memoir with intense feelings of shock, shame, and resilience.

Couple this text with the Related Media video “Implicit Bias Matters: Thinking Under the Influence.” Invite students to discuss the following questions: “According to the video’s narrator, what is ‘thinking under the influence,’ and how does it impact decisions at both a personal and system level?” Encourage them to connect their reflections to evidence from Ferrell's text.

“ What Slaves are Taught to Think of the North ” by Harriet Ann Jacobs (9th grade)

In this short memoir, Jacobs provides a true account of her experiences as a slave. Students will be drawn in by Jacobs’s direct and scathing language as she describes the hypocrisies of both Southern slave owners and Northerners who visited the South. Jacobs shares the ways in which slaves were manipulated by people in the North and South in order to keep them enslaved.

After reading this text, have students reflect on Discussion Question 3, “How can fear be used to manipulate? Use evidence from this text, your own experience, and other art or literature in your answer.”

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: Excerpts from Chapters 1 and 7 by Frederick Douglass (9th grade)

This excerpt from The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass shares details from Chapter 1 and 7. In the excerpt from Chapter 1, Douglass describes his first overseer, Plummer, and the impact of witnessing so much violence from such a cruel individual. The Chapter 7 excerpt describes his time with Master Hugh’s family, where Douglass shares his experiences learning to read and write.

Students will be awed by Douglass’s hunger for knowledge and the elegance of his diction. Excerpt from “You Don’t have to Say you Love Me” by Sherman Alexie (10th grade)

This memoir excerpt shares Alexie’s decision to leave the school on his Reservation to make a better life for himself. Shortly after enrolling at his new school, Alexie experiences the loss of his grandmother, sister, and brother-in-law. As a result, he worries his choice to leave has “jinxed” the family. Students are sure to relate to Alexie’s journey, tracing his experience of growing up and choosing his own path.

Looking for more short memoir examples? After reading this text, have students read and analyze the Paired Text “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. Ask students: “How is the narrator in Sherman Alexie’s memoir ‘rag[ing] against the dying of the light’? Is the narrator’s experience watching his mother grieve in ‘Excerpt from ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’ similar to the speaker’s experience watching his father die in ‘Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night’? Why or why not?”

“ A Frontline Nurse for the Vietcong ” As told to Tong Thi Xuyen (10th grade)

At only 17 years old, Nguyen Thi Do was recruited by the Vietcong and spent over a decade serving as a nurse during the Vietnam War. This memoir serves a window into Nyguyen’s experience during the war, detailing how she was impacted by the horrible endeavors she describes. Nyguyen shared her larger fear, “that when my friends, my comrades and I are all dead, our history and stories will die with us.”

After reading this text, have students discuss Discussion Question 1, “Nguyen Thi Do expresses concerns about her history dying with her. Do you think it is important for future generations to know about Do’s experiences? Why or why not? What are some ways her experiences could be kept alive?”

“ Serving in Florida: Excerpt from Nickel and Dimed ” by Barbara Ehrenreich (11th grade)

In this text, Barbara Enrenreich details her year-long social experiment of living on minimum wage in Key West, Florida. While this text is easy for students to digest with light-hearted language and a humorous tone, students may be shocked when they dig into the depth of Enrenreich’s struggles to survive throughout the year.

As students read, encourage them to take note of the argument Enrenreich is developing and what evidence she uses to support that argument. These annotations will prepare students for Assessment Question 1, “Which statement best describes how the style of the texts contributes to its persuasiveness?” Assigning assessment questions will also prepare students for grade-level reading assessments!

The Lasting Value of the Personal Essay

This writing form has a value that goes beyond the college application as it nurtures self-reflection and inspires creativity.

I still remember my own personal essay that I wrote decades ago during my college admissions process. My essay focused on movies and how movies were a conduit of curiosity. It was also about the death of my father and how movies, in part, had provided a common ground for us—a connection. Although my essay, of course, was not the sole determining factor in my admission, it’s a predominant memory from that time of my life. To this day, I feel it had a persuasive effect on my admittance.

In fact, now looking back, I can’t recall my grade point average or my class rank or the final grade that my English teacher gave me on my literary analysis of Heart of Darkness. Even my exact SAT score, back then a real measure of academic aptitude, remains fuzzy to me all these years later, “shaded in wistful half-lights,” as described by Norman Maclean. I can, however, remember nearly every sentence, if not quite every word, of the personal essay I submitted to my first-choice college, which has undoubtedly, for me, over the years remained one of the most important pieces of writing I have ever produced.

The personal essay is an enduring literary genre and an art form that provides often-challenging material in English classes. In my Advanced Placement Language and Composition course, we frequently read works from an array of authors from various eras, including Michel de Montaigne, Virginia Woolf, E. B. White, Joan Didion, André Aciman, Brian Doyle, Dr. Oliver Sacks. These writers function as exemplars for my students to both analyze and model not only for their rhetorical value but also for their stylistic technique and philosophical ruminations.

Power of Personalization

One of the most predominant rhetorical strategies we recognize in these texts is personalization. And so Woolf’s “The Death of the Moth” has impacted my students throughout the years with its frank depiction of psychological tension, addressing philosophical themes on an existential level that never fail to capture their attention—so much so, that a group of students painted a mural on the wall outside my classroom, a visual interpretation of Woolf’s essay that they titled Memento Mori .

The candor and intimacy of Dr. Oliver Sacks’s depiction of his final days before his death from cancer have engendered numerous touching and insightful comments from my students during our Socratic seminars analyzing his almost unendurably moving personal essay, “My Periodic Table.” 

Students respond viscerally, it seems, to the personal. Sadly, many students have been touched by some of the same tragic subject matter that we analyze through these texts. During our seminars and journal assignments, my students have revealed their own personal connections to some of the personal essays we read in class, connecting, I think, to the shared experiences that we have all had throughout human history. 

Our students often find themselves facing a vortex of standardized tests, AP exams, and benchmarks throughout the school year, which often emphasize the formulaic. The active process of personal choice on topic and subject seems lost. So often my students ask me questions when writing an essay, seeking a particular answer, as if literary analysis were calculus. Missing is the creativity, the exploration of writing free from academic constraints like rubrics and scoring guides. Writer-editor Steve Moyer asserts in  Edsitement , “Nuanced thought... requires a greater gestation period than the nearly instant gratification made possible on Twitter.” I have witnessed this impatience from my own students.

There can be a restlessness in the writing process, a hesitancy for revision or drafting. Personal essays require self-reflection and a free-flowing freedom from rigid form that my students embrace in a way that they don’t with an argument or research-based essay. On more than one occasion during parent-teacher conferences, I have had parents tell me that their child used to love creative writing, but somewhere along the way, the rigor of school seemed to have killed it.

Personal essays, then, restore that creativity, since they encourage a freedom from form. Students can experiment with style and figurative language and syntax in ways that the traditional academic five-paragraph essay often thwarts.

Personal essays also allow teachers to really get to know our students, too. The inherent intimacy of a personal essay, the connection between the writer and the reader—in this case, a student and a teacher—provides insight into the concerns, the dreams, the emotions of our students in addition to allowing us to assess how they exercise their compositional skills, including imagery, syntax, diction, and figurative language. Here, then, a teacher has the best of both worlds. We’re able to both connect to our students on an emotional level and evaluate their learning on an academic level. Personal essays also serve as an emotional outlet. 

There seems to be a common assumption that personal essays for high school students serve only the college application process, so the process begins during their senior year. Personal writing, however, should occur throughout a student’s academic experience. The narrative essays that most elementary school students encounter evolve into the more ruminative, philosophical, and reflective personal writing they will encounter during their senior year from many of Common App essay prompts.

Many teachers implement journal writing in their classrooms that provides a firm foundation for the type of personal writing that the college admissions essay requires. In my own class of juniors, the last assignment we complete for the year is a personal essay. My intent is to help prepare them for the college essay they will write, hopefully, during the summer so that they will have a solid draft before the application process begins. 

Teaching our students this strategy in their own writing benefits them in their futures, not only for the imminent college application process but also for job interviews. For example, I was mentoring a student, a senior who had no desire to go to college, about the job interview process he would soon face after graduation. We rehearsed and practiced the types of questions he might encounter from a future employer. I encouraged him to remember the personal details of his experience, personalizing everything in a way that would allow him to ideally stand out as a job candidate.

Through personal essay writing, my overarching, grand ambition is to instill in my students ultimately a love of reflection, looking back on their experience, reminiscing on significant memories that linger, carefully considering the seemingly little moments that, only upon reflection, have an enormous impact on us.

My Childhood Memories:   I was the youngest son of my parents. So, all the members of our family loved me very dearly. They bought me nice toys. My grandmother was very fond of me. She told me many interesting stories.

My Days in the Village: I was born in a village . The Padma flows by it. I swam in the river with other boys.

The whole village was my playground. I wandered in the village and played with my friends. The days of summer were the happiest days to us. We plucked mangoes and blackberries from tree to tree and ate them to our heat’s content. I had a great fascination for picking green mangoes during storm.

Education at Home: My learning was not dull. My uncle taught all the children of our family in the morning and at night.

The Village Maqtab: The village Maqtab was another interesting place for me. An old Maulavi used to teach us there.

School Days: The days of my school were very sweet. In school, we were afraid of our teachers.

The Village Hat: Another interesting memory was the village hat. The hat used to sit twice a week. I used to go to the market with my father. I used to buy sweets from the vendors.

Sometimes I made mistakes and when my parents were about to punish me, my grandparents always saved me. My grandparents died when I was seven years old. It was a matter of great shock to us. I still miss them.

Friends and Playmates: I had a few friends. They were our neighbors. At that time television was very costly and very few families had it. There was a color television in one of my friends’ houses. Sometimes I went to his house to watch TV. The programs on TV fascinated me. The number of my friends increased when I got admitted to the school.

The School: I was admitted to school at the age of five. The school was a very short distance from our house. I clearly remember my first day at school. I got up early in the morning, put on a white shirt and blue pants, and went to school with my father. In school, I met my teachers and classmates. My classmates were friendly and nice to me. My teachers also loved me very much.

Market and Park: Sometimes my parents took me to the market. At the market, they bought me dresses, chocolates, toys, balls, and other necessary items. They also took me to parks. We had a merry-go-round and other kinds of rides in the parks.

The Fairs: I also went to fairs with my parents. There is a big fair held annually in Chittagong. It is called ‘Jabbarer Bali Khela’. Many attractive toys and household items are found at that fair. My parents took me to that fair and bought me toys and sweetmeats. We also went to other fairs held on the occasion of Bengali New Year’s Day, Victory Day, Language Day, etc. We also went to different book fairs where my parents bought me books suitable for children.

Conclusion: A happy feeling engulfs me when I think of my childhood days. Then I lost myself in reverie and feel a strong nostalgia and longing for those days. That period has essentially made me the man I am now.

However, not all schools have a photographer come in and take pictures every year. Luckily, most high schools allow students to bring their mobile phones or cameras on special occasions.   • The importance of money management: It is important for children to be financially literate in order to avoid the pitfalls of unwise financial decisions when they grow up. Financial literacy educates and empowers people to make informed personal financial decisions. Moreover, financial literacy can help students become less susceptible to fraud.
  • The importance of good manners : Good manners are a way of showing respect to not only humans, but animals and even the environment. When we have good manners, it is easier to live in harmony with others. Moreover, when people observe how courteous we are, most will naturally return the favour and be kind to us as well.
  • The importance of honesty and integrity: Honesty and integrity are two primary virtues that define a person’s character. When a person possesses these attributes, they will have the confidence to stand up for themselves and their beliefs.
  • T he importance of responsibility: Responsibility is a general moral obligation to do something. It can also refer to the state of being responsible for one’s actions. Responsibility is not just an obligation, but it is also the capacity to live up to expectations.
  • To Lose Gracefully: Losing with grace is an art form that many people have yet to master. It’s important to know when it’s time to give up on a project or relationship.
  • Importance of Compassion and Forgiveness : Compassion and forgiveness are essential to living a happy life. When we are compassionate, forgiving, and kind to ourselves and others, it can help us reduce stress, anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, jealousy and other negative emotions which can lead to physical health problems. Hence, it is paramount that students inculcate this quality as early as possible.

Halfway through my family’s winter trip to Paris, I felt a sense of urgency to make sure that I took full advantage of the opportunity to be in this bustling capital of the world. Since it would be my last time visiting Paris as a high school student, I wanted to experience all of the fancy, marvelous places that I never got to see in my flat, suburban hometown. At the same time, I will fondly remember planning the family itinerary for visiting all the key spots in Paris from the perspective of being an innocent, wide-eyed teenager. 

One of the major spots I wanted to visit was the Eiffel Tower. France not only has a discerning eye for fashion but also has amazing taste in architecture. Everyone might know about the Eiffel Tower very well, but they don’t know why it was made. While planning for Paris, I thought doing so would make the moment more impressive and long-lasting in memory to immerse myself fully in the historical aspects and background. 

The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle , a World Fair, which marked the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was supposed to be demolished after 20 years, but it was preserved because of its role as an enormous antenna. 

The Eiffel Tower’s appearance, even though both day and night were mesmerizing, I found the view Eiffel Tower at night superior. I continuously searched for the best place to see the tower and found les Jardins du Trocadéro. It was a perfect place to see the overall architectural view without any cut-offs. 

The clear navy sky did not seem to have any single hint of pollution, and twinkling lights wound up the tower, creating a captivating luminescence. In front of the Eiffel Tower, I imagined becoming a movie star walking a red carpet. Tower was much larger than I had expected. It could be seen in infinite directions and distances, and every single view was iconic.

Halfway through the trip, we gathered with thousands of people to watch the New Year countdown at the Arc de Triomphe. As the clock approached midnight, more and more people crowded around, and people everywhere filled the atmosphere with the sounds of their laughter and joyful shrieks. 

I watched a montage of France’s most visually stunning spectacles on a big screen erected in front of the Arc de Triomphe. It was mainly about the upcoming Olympics in Paris and also displayed the flags of various nations. The trees were lined up like giant broomsticks along the main street of the Champs Elysées. They were decorated with a multitude of colorful lights that illuminated the night sky above us. There was no room, not even for a mouse, as we were all squeezed together. 

The countdown began, and my heart pounded like marching band drums. The crowd erupted into cheers as the clock struck twelve, and my family–my mom, my dad, and my brother–tightly embraced one another and welcomed the amazing new year with a smile on our faces. 

This year was different from the previous years when my family and relatives gathered at my grandmother’s house to celebrate the new year. We would eat cakes, blow out candles, and watch the New Year’s countdown on live TV— all which were humdrum. I suppose I was not the only one who thought the countdown in Paris was worthwhile as people threw a lot of money into attending this one-time event. 

Visiting France at this time, surprisingly, worked so well since I had just acquired the profound historical background of France and its revolution. Understanding the historical purposes of the architecture, like the Palace of Versailles and monuments in the Louvre, facilitated me in becoming more involved in French culture. All of which could be fledgling ideas to those who haven’t studied it before. 

Looking at the Palace of Versailles, knowing that it was built from the taxes of the middle and working classes, I thought of how much had to be collected in order to build the magnificent palace. 

One of the most famous places in the Place is the Galerie des Glaces, or Hall of Mirrors. Back then, even though producing flat and arched mirrors was very challenging, the Hall of Mirrors was entirely made up of mirrors on both sides. All of which was made possible by the fact that only a single craftsman in Venice could make it. 

Using the sunlight as it came in and reflected off all of the mirrors, I believe King Louis XIV was quite brilliant and clever. When the sun sets, the sunlight comes in, and the light is reflected, creating a symphony of light from both sides. The sunbeams reflected from both sides reflect on the chandeliers on the walls and ceiling. 

In this influx of sunlight, Louis XIV sat in a golden chair at the end of the room. This was purposely used for meetings with foreign envoys to give a striking impression. King Louis XIV sat solemnly in the light, which would have been intimidating — offering a powerful image of France. 

If you plan to visit the Palace of Versailles, you cannot miss the garden at the back of the palace. During my visit amid winter, the garden looked bare and leafless. I did not get to witness any freshly sprouted and vivacious trees, which prevented me from fully understanding the royal’s leisurely and aristocratic life.  However, it was boundless beyond words. The lake spread out endlessly and lining up flawlessly. 

On one of the last days of the trip, we stopped at the Musée d’Orsay, Musée de L’Orangerie, and the Louvre Museum. I hoped to look at all the pieces one by one, moreover, to keep them in my mind for a long time.  However, I failed; there were too many. Nonetheless, I still saw art pieces from some of the most well-known artists.

The works of Monet touched my heart and made me fully understand the majesty of French artwork. At his home in Giverny, he made an artificial garden—les jardins de Claude Monet—as a model to use for paintings. I was most keen on his pieces since they were beautiful, abstract descriptions of landscapes. I felt envious of the French people being able to visit these works in their day-to-day lives and closely. 

Visiting the sights of Paris inspired me. It gave me time to recharge myself away from my chaotic life back in California; I experienced a happiness like never before. Even though some people were somewhat detached from the travelers, there were also warm-hearted people, which made me feel a strong bond even with foreigners we had just met. 

On Christmas, we met a mother and her daughter in a restaurant who sent us a bottle of house wine without any strings attached. It was a very touching and comforting memory. We started to have a short conversation with each other and wished each other well for the New Year. It turned out that they were from Singapore, which made me think of my own favorable memories from my trip to Singapore seven years ago.

Even though it’s easy to assume that strangers are mainly concerned with themselves or doing things for their own benefit, I experienced the opposite in Paris. Through this encounter with this mother and daughter at the restaurant, their contribution was unexpected, and it made me feel a sense of support and warmth from people I had never met before. 

I began pondering about the theory of whether humans are good or evil by nature. It is not the human instinct to be greedy, but modern society has encouraged this quality in us. This simple act of sharing a bottle of wine, even though I couldn’t drink it, gave me evidence to believe that humans are good by nature.
