Salman Khan (born December 27, 1965, Indore , Madhya Pradesh, India) is a Bollywood actor, dancer, film producer, and television presenter. Along with actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan , Salman Khan is one of the three most popular Khans of Bollywood. Though not related, the three Khans achieved massive success and popularity in Bollywood between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. Salman Khan is also a philanthropist and heads the Being Human foundation. He has appeared in more than 100 movies and is popularly known as Bhai (Hindi: “Brother”), Bhaijaan (a respectful and affectionate address for “brother” in Urdu), and Sallu.
In 2017 Forbes magazine ranked Khan as the 9th highest-paid actor and 71st highest-paid celebrity in the world. He topped the Forbes India list of the richest Indian celebrities in 2017 and 2018 but fell to 3rd in 2019. As of 2024 Khan’s net worth exceeds $347 million.
Khan’s great-grandfather moved from Afghanistan to Madhya Pradesh , India , in the 19th century. Khan was born to the well-known Bollywood screenwriter Salim Khan and his first wife, film producer Sushila Charak (also known as Salma Khan), and often recounts in interviews how, having a Muslim father, a Hindu mother, and a Christian stepmother (his father later married Helen, a Bollywood actress), his family observes a variety of different religious festivals with equal zeal, including Eid , Diwali , and Christmas . When asked during a court case to introduce himself and state his religion, he famously once said, “I am Salman Khan and I am an Indian.”
Salman Khan is the eldest of five siblings. Brothers Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan are also actors and producers, and sister Alvira Khan is a film producer and fashion designer, while Arpita Khan is an interior designer.
Khan worked as a model advertising products such Limca (a soft drink) before landing his first film role in Biwi Ho To Aisi in 1988. His breakout role was in the 1989 romantic film Maine Pyar Kiya , which led to a Filmfare Award for best male debut. Despite the acclaim he received for his role in that movie, his career coasted until the 1994 release of the film Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! , which reached blockbuster status that year. Khan capitalized on the film’s success to take a wide variety of new roles.
Khan experimented with several different genres in the 1990s and 2000s. He appeared in the slapstick comedies Andaz Apna Apna (1994) and No Entry (2005), the action films Karan Arjun (1995) and Race 3 (2018), and romances, such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) (for which he won a Filmfare Award for best supporting actor), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), and Tere Naam (2003). In 1999 three of Khan’s films ranked among Bollywood’s highest-grossing films of that year at the box office: Hum Saath-Saath Hain , Biwi No. 1 , and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam . The Indian box office lists Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) as all-time blockbusters.
Khan’s career was supercharged in 2009 by the record-breaking hit film Wanted , an action thriller which, though criticized for a weak plot and poor dialogue , provided Khan with a strong comeback from the lackluster box-office performances of his mid-2000s films. Khan next landed the starring role of a police officer in the beloved Dabangg action franchise, and his popularity became such that his presence in a film could guarantee a certain level of box office success. As his reputation in the film industry grew, in 2010 Khan also became the host of Bigg Boss , an Indian take on the popular reality show Big Brother , which he hosted for the next 13 seasons. He also hosted the second season of the show in the OTT format. Released in 2012 and 2017, Khan’s first two Tiger films, in which Khan plays an Indian intelligence officer, were very successful at the box office. Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) broke opening-weekend records and became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time, going on to win best action movie at the Filmfare Awards. In 2018 Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)—a movie in which Khan plays the role of Pawan Kumar, an Indian devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman (also known as Bajrang Bali, giving the film its title), helping a little girl from Pakistan find her way back home—became the third highest-grossing Indian movie at the global box office. In fact, the movie was very popular in China, and its overseas earnings were higher than its domestic ticket sales. Some of Khan’s later movies— Race 3 (2018), Dabangg 3 (2019), and Radhe (2021)—have received negative reviews.
In the 1990s and 2000s Khan gained a “bad boy” reputation in the Bollywood press. He was in multiple physical conflicts with paparazzi , leading to some publications refusing to photograph him in 2014. Khan has also been accused of two crimes for which he has been tried. The first case involved two 1998 hunting incidents during the filming of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain . Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks ( Antilope cervicapra ) and an Indian gazelle ( Gazella bennetti ), locally known as chinkara . Both animals are protected species in India. The incidents eventually led to four different court cases: two of them were overturned on appeal in 2016; he was acquitted of one in 2017; and he was sentenced to five years in jail for another in 2018. Khan was released on bail within days while his appeals—still underway as of 2024—were ongoing.
Khan was found guilty in 2015 of a deadly hit-and-run accident. The case originated in a 2002 arrest when Khan was accused of having run over five people sleeping on a street in Mumbai , injuring four and killing one. In May of 2015 a court found Khan guilty of culpable homicide, including driving under the influence of alcohol, and sentenced him to five years in prison. Later that year the conviction was overturned on appeal because of insufficient evidence.
In 2011 Khan announced that he had been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia , a nerve condition that causes acute pain in the head and neck. Khan underwent surgery in Los Angeles and fully recovered from the condition. That same year he launched Salman Khan Films (SKF), his own production and distribution company. Khan has also been officially credited as a writer on a few films and reportedly has had uncredited writing roles on at least one other. Being Human, a charitable trust Khan founded in 2007, provides education and healthcare services to underprivileged people in India.
Salman Khan is a popular Indian actor, producer, television personality, singer, and philanthropist. He is one of the most influential and highest-paid Bollywood actors in the country. His popularity can be attributed to a huge following on social media. Throughout his career, Sallu Bhai has had several box office successes that led Forbes India to declare him as the ninth highest-paid actor in the world, and the second-highest paid in India after Shah Rukh Khan. On and off the screen, Salman has a fair share of controversy and legal troubles, he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in 2015 but later acquitted. His notable film credits include Maine Pyar Kiya, Karan Arjun, Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Kick, Tiger Zinda Hai, Dabangg 3, Pathaan, and Tiger 3. In 2002 he starred in the release Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam.
In 1999, Khan starred in three films: Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United, Biwi No.1, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam alongside Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan, which earned him another Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare awards. His performance in the film was reviewed favourably, with Sharmila Telikum of Reddit noting, "Salman is endearing. He does tend to ham in the dramatic scenes but looks very comfortable doing comedy and those romantic scenes."
In 1999, he began dating Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai; their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2001. Khan started dating actress Katrina Kaif. After years of speculations, Kaif admitted in an interview in 2011 that she had been in a serious relationship with Khan for several years, but it ended in 2010. Sangeeta Bijlani and Somy Ali were also in serious relationships with Khan.
Khan worked in five different films in 1998, his first release being the romantic comedy film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya opposite Kajol, one of the biggest commercial successes of that year. Khan's performance in the film earned favourable critical review. He also had an extended cameo in Karan Johar's directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, for which he earned a second Filmfare Award under the Best Supporting Actor category.
In 1996, Khan performed in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directional debut Khamoshi: The Musical. He also appeared in and Raj Kanwar's action hit Jeet. He had two releases in 1997: Judwaa and Auzaar. The former was a comedy directed by David Dhawan where he played a dual role of twins separated at birth.
In 1994, Khan appeared in Rajkumar Santoshi's Andaz Apna Apna, co-starring Aamir Khan. At the time of its release, the film failed at the box office but has gained a cult status over the years. Later in the year he collaborated with director Sooraj Barjatya in the romance Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! co-starring Madhuri Dixit. During the 1995 awards season, the film won 3 Filmfare Awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. It also won the National Award for being the most popular film of the year. Earning over ₹ 1.35 billion (US$19 million) worldwide, the film became the biggest Bollywood hit of the year. It is one of the films on Box Office India's list of "Biggest Blockbusters Ever in Hindi Cinema". In 2006, it was still the fourth-highest ever grossing Bollywood film, according to Box Office India. In 1995 he starred in Rakesh Roshan's Karan Arjun alongside Shah Rukh Khan. The two played brothers who are reincarnated after being killed by family enemies. His role of Karan earned him a nomination for the 1995 Filmfare Best Actor Award.
1990 saw one film release starring Khan; Baaghi: A Rebel for Love, a box office success, followed by three moderately successful films in 1991, Patthar Ke Phool, Sanam Bewafa, and Kurbaan. The same year, Khan went on to co-star with Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit for the romantic drama Saajan.
The eldest son of screenwriter Salim Khan , Khan began his acting career with a supporting role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), followed by a leading role in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). (1994), the action thriller Karan Arjun (1995), the comedy Biwi No.1 (1999), and the family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). After a brief period of decline in the 2000s, Khan achieved greater stardom in the 2010s by playing the lead role in successful action films like Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Kick (2014), Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). Forbes included him in their 2015 list of Top-Paid 100 Celebrity Entertainers in world; Khan tied with Amitabh Bachchan for No. 71 on the list, both with earnings of $33.5 million.
Khan made his acting debut with the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi, which saw him play a supporting role. He went on to play the leading role in Sooraj R. Barjatya's romantic family drama Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), which become one of the highest-grossing Indian films at the time. Saiee Manjrekar reflects on the 37-year age gap with Salman Khan in Dabangg 3 and shares why the criticism didn’t affect her.
Saiee Manjrekar made her acting debut in Dabangg 3 alongside Salman Khan, portraying the character of Rajjo. Despite the excitement around the film, it faced significant backlash due to the 37-year age gap between the leads—Saiee was 17, while Salman was 54 during filming. However, in a recent interview, Saiee revealed that the criticism did not impact her, largely due to her detachment from social media at the time.
In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Saiee reflected on her initial experience post- Dabangg 3 and explained how being away from social media shielded her from the negative discussions. “I was oblivious to that discussion because that was the time I had just started, and I had no management, no PR, so I was unaware of all this. I was just happy to see myself on the big screen,” she shared.
She further elaborated that by the time she became active on Instagram six months after the film’s release, the conversation around the age gap had already quieted down. “When I became more active on Instagram, I saw everything that had happened, but since it was something that occurred six months ago, it didn’t affect me as much as it could have. I was in a different stage of my life and career at that point,” Saiee said.
Saiee also discussed her ability to handle criticism. “I’m a very thick-skinned person; things don’t affect me quickly. I’ve always been like that since childhood. Even today, if there is praise, I will be happy, and if someone says something negative, I will take note of it, but it won’t bother me deeply. I’ll just keep going,” she explained.
While Dabangg 3 was eagerly anticipated, it received mixed reviews and performed moderately at the box office, becoming the lowest-grossing film in the franchise. Directed by Prabhu Deva, the film's reception did not hinder Saiee's career. She was recently seen in Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha , featuring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Jimmy Sheirgill, and Shantanu Maheshwari.
