A Principal Assignment Technician supervises and coordinates the work of a large number of staff which could be comprised of two or more assignment units that prepare law, rule, or collective bargaining agreement driven assignment transactions.

A Principal Assignment Technician is responsible for organizing, coordinating, supervising, and auditing the work of a large staff of Assignment Technicians and clerical employees in the preparation of assignment transactions, and providing assistance to classified and certificated administrators, in accordance with Education Code, Personnel Commission, and other legal or negotiated mandates.
Typical duties may include:
- Planning, organizing, and reviewing the work of a large number of staff comprised of Assignment Technicians, Senior Assignment Technicians, Supervising Assignment Technicians, and clerical staff engaged in processing law, rule, or collective bargaining agreement driven assignment transactions.
- Developing orientation and in-service training programs for subordinate staff.
- Interpreting and explaining federal and State employment related laws, rules, collective bargaining agreements, policies, and procedures related to personnel practices to District personnel and the public.
- Evaluating the assignment processing work flow, determining problem areas, and recommending and developing new procedures and office forms.
- Analyzing and/or participating in the resolution of complex, unusual, urgent, or especially sensitive assignment transactions.
- Analyzing payroll simulation report to determine the outcome of annualization, paid as work, overpayments, or settlements.
- Explaining rules, regulations, and qualifications as it relates to Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), leaves, allotted time, returns, and extended illness benefits.
- Processing assignments, separations, suspensions, demotions, and retirements for administratively reassigned employees.
- Providing technical testing for Systems Applications and Products (SAP) using the testing environment.
- Processing separation actions on non-reelected employees.
- Interpreting and applying laws, rules, and labor contract provisions and reviewing personnel records, data processing reports, and computer printouts in order to obtain and analyze information and resolve problems.
- Auditing documents and data related to requested and completed assignment transactions for completeness, accuracy, and legality, utilizing Business Applications Supporting Education (BASE) functions.

PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED
You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation.
Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities man not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented by two college-level courses in personnel or business administration or supervision.
Three years of experience in the preparation, processing, and auditing* of District assignment transactions, including one year providing work direction. Completion of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Organizational Excellence Exceptional Supervisor Certificate Program is preferable.
*PLEASE NOTE:
- Qualifying experience must involve PRIMARY responsibility for analyzing a variety of SAP assignments transactions and determining solutions to pertinent issues.

The employment selection process for Principal Assignment Technician tentatively consists of a computerized performance assessment, scored questionnaire (that you will complete as part of the application process), followed by a Technical Project and Technical Interview.
TESTING PROCESS
- The computerized performance assessment will assess your proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel.
