How To Plan A Party?

There are many factors that go into planning a party, like food, location, and music. The best way to start is by deciding the date. If the date is flexible, then you’ll have a few options. You should then pick a theme for your party and work from there. What you decide should depend on the type of people who will be attending. Next, start by figuring out how many people you want to invite. If you would like to have it indoors, then ensure that there is enough space. After you know how many guests you want to invite, decide on a date and time for the party. This will make it easier to coordinate with vendors such as caterers or decorators if needed. If you are hosting a large party, plan your menu and select the food you will serve. You’ll also need to decide on beverages such as alcohol and soft drinks. Be sure to order enough food for every guest. Your next step is to create invitations, which should include the date, an RSVP date, and any information about location or dress code.

Another important tip is to improvise – It can never hurt to have your sights set on having a great time and making sure everyone remains safe. While you don’t need to spend a lot of money on your party, it’s always good to have a plan. For example, if you want popcorn that tastes good, you can buy some already made and have it delivered to your party. If you want beer that is cheap but great, you can order bottles of beer in bulk and have them delivered to your party. And finally, remember to breathe. Sometimes we get so caught up in the planning process that we forget to have a minute to ourselves. Doing so will help you stay calm no matter what happens throughout the night.

To recap, these are the things to keep in mind while planning a party:

Plan the date and time for the party: When planning a party, one of the most important decisions to make is when to have it. Factors such as what day of the week, what time of day and how long your event will last all influence this decision.

Choose a theme for the party: Themes help shape the mood and atmosphere of a party. They can be as simple as an all-white affair or as elaborate as a masquerade ball. Choosing a theme for your upcoming event can be difficult, but there are certain factors to consider, such as: Which type of party is this? Are there dietary restrictions? Is it a formal or casual occasion? Who will be hosting the event? What is the occasion for the party?

Decide whether to get a venue:  Venues come in all shapes and sizes and vary considerably in terms of price. If you are hosting a small event, it may be possible to host the event at your home or at a public space such as a park. However, if you are hosting an event for more than 50 people, there are many options to choose from.

Plan the food and drink: Planning the food and drink for the party is important. There are so many different things to consider, such as the type` of the menu, whether or not to include dessert, drinks, appetizers, etc.

Plan the entertainment for the party: The best ideas for party entertainment are games. Games can be anything from a scavenger hunt to charades. Games are fun and offer an opportunity to interact with one another. If the party has a large number of guests, then hiring a local band, DJ or performers might be worth it.

Plan who will be invited to your party: The guest list is a crucial decision. It’s important to figure out who you want to have at your party. Decide on the type of people you want to have at your party, then think about how many of them you’ll need to invite.

Make a Checklist

One way to make sure your party goes smoothly is to create a checklist. You can list all the tasks that need to be done based on the order they need to happen. This will reduce your stress level because you’ll know where you’re at in the process and you’ll have a list of things that still need to get done. There are several different types of checklists that can be used. A basic checklist will include things such as beverages, dishes, serving utensils, and food for the guests.

When planning a party, it is important to have a guest list. This will help you figure out what kind of food to serve. It will also help you with the budget for the party. If required, you can also speak with your guests about their dietary restrictions or allergies beforehand so you can plan accordingly.

The guest list will usually come from the following sources:

  • Friends and family
  • Potential business contacts
  • Civic groups
  • Local churches and temples

A good guest list will have some of these elements:

  • The Guest List should have some sort of commonality, whether it be people who are close friends, or coworkers, or people who are the same age.
  • The guest list should also include a variety of activities, such as socializing and dancing, so that people on the list will be able to find something to do at the event.
  • It is important to be aware of any guest lists that may have people who may not want to be on the list.

The venue is one of the most important aspects to consider when planning a party. You want to make sure your venue is accessible, has enough space for your guests, and will fit in with your theme. Here are some tips for deciding on the perfect location:

  • Think about the number of guests: How many people will be attending? How many rooms do you need, and what are your event themes/goals? Will you want to accommodate guests with special dietary needs?
  • Look at the space: How big is your venue? Is it easy to get around? Is it access for the guests, etc.
  • Consider your budget: The cost of renting out a venue is expensive, but renting out an indoor space (like a conference room or gym) might be a little cheaper.
  • Consider your event: Are you having a dinner party? A small gathering with guest speakers? A fundraiser? A wedding?
  • Check out the locations in person: Head to the venues and explore the space to determine what it is like inside. Are there any hidden or unique features?

The first step of planning is to set a budget. Take out your calculator and figure out how much money you’re able to spend on the party. When you know what you’re working with, it’s easier to focus on what kind of party you want. For example, if you have $1,000, then it would be best to just hire a caterer or buy some food for the party. On the other hand, if you had $2,000, then you could also provide drinks and music too. One way to keep your party planning budget in check is to make a list of all the things you want for your party. Work with what you have at home, rent what you need, and borrow anything else that’s important to your event. Remember, planning your budget from the beginning will save you from buying things you don’t really need.

The type of food needed at parties depends on whether the party is casual, formal, or a potluck. For casual parties, guests will usually bring their own food such as a mixed salad, sandwiches with potato chips, and quesadillas. Formal parties usually have a good mix of salads and finger foods like cocktail shrimp. A potluck would include many different dishes from various hosts.

Drink planning is one of the most important parts of throwing a great party. You have to think about what type of drinks you will be going to have, and what types of side food your guests might want. Maybe you want to start a cocktail bar or go with a variety of beer and wine for your drink selection. For guests who prefer to remain sober, ensure that they have choices too, such as water, iced tea, fruit juices, or soda.

Decorations

One way to set the tone for your event is with decorations. At a wedding reception, flowers, tablecloths, and mood-setting candles are often used. For children’s parties, balloons and streamers can create an atmosphere of joy. Streamers or paper chains in colors may be hung along walls for decoration at events such as birthday parties. Paper chains, sometimes called paper lanterns, are commonly hung from the ceiling. String lights may be used at holiday events such as Christmas and Halloween parties. Decorations for a dinner party include candle holders and flower arrangements. Table linens, centerpieces and your choice of dinnerware can also set the mood and style of a dinner party.

Entertainment

The most important thing to consider is entertainment for your guests. If you’re hosting a large party, hire a live band or DJ to keep your party going all night long. For smaller gatherings, create a playlist on your phone and play it through speakers. Bring out board games and other activities for your guests to socialize with one another. When you’re in charge of the planning, try to include a few activities that don’t require guests to leave the party. For instance, bring out a few small trays of snacks that guests can enjoy while lounging in a seating area with friends.

Conclusion on How To Plan A Party Essay

Planning a party is usually a complicated task. There are many things to consider, including the guest list, food, location, entertainment, etc. The key to having a successful party is planning ahead. You should start by figuring out what type of party you want to have – birthday, retirement, wedding – and then list all the things that are needed for that type of party. Once you have this list, you can prioritize the things on your list and start making decisions based on your needs.

FAQ’s on How to Plan A Party

Question 1. What are the steps to plan a party?

Answer: Following are important steps to consider when planning a party:

  • Plan the date and time for the party
  • Choose a theme for the party
  • Decide whether to get a venue
  • Plan the food and drink
  • Plan the entertainment for the party
  • Plan who will be invited to your party

Question 2. How do you start a party?

Answer: A party can be as simple as inviting a few friends over to watch a movie. If you plan on hosting a party, consider planning it out in advance. Begin by sitting down with your friends and writing out the event’s title, date and time, and the guest list. You’ll want to include information about what type of party this will be (family-friendly, formal, camp-out), along with any other details that are important for your guests to know (what snacks will be served, games for kids or adults to play etc).

Question 3. How do I host a good party?

Answer: First off, it is important to think about the type of party you are planning. Is this a birthday party for friends? An anniversary event for the family? Or is it a wedding event? If so, take into account the theme and how your guests will feel. It’s also important to consider your budget. You don’t want to spend too much on food and drinks if you’re hosting an intimate get-together with your close friends. However, if you’re having a wedding reception or other large group event, make sure you have enough space for all of your guests. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they’re packed in like sardines at a smaller gathering.

Question 4. How do you plan a party with no money?

Answer: If you are planning a party and don’t have any money, then get creative! If you have to make things yourself, think about what needs to be done beforehand. It can be a lot of work, but it will save you money and allow for some fun twists. You could try to use things you already have at home and also borrow from family or friends. Most importantly, try to avoid having a party with no food, because it won’t go over well with you or your guests.

Essay on How to Plan a Party

For some people, planning a party can be a hassle. It can be expensive, time consuming, and frustrating when it doesn’t turn out as planned. I have always had a love for planning parties. I just recently planned one for my gender reveal. The steps I take are pretty simple, but overall gave me an amazing turn out at my party. To plan a successful party, you must set a date and time, buy your supplies that are needed, and invite your friends and family.

The first and perhaps most important step in planning a successful party is setting a date and a time. This may be the first step but it is certainly not the easiest. Setting a date can take weeks, even months to do. You never know when everyone is free or if there is an event coming up that you have to attend. Avoid planning the party in the months with holidays or months where there is a big event coming up. Ask around to your friends and family to see if they have anything planned and are free to come. You most definitely want the people closest to you to come to your event. If you see a day where there are no events scheduled go ahead and snag that day for your party. You also need to set a designated time. For instance, say that your party is going to be from 3:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m. People want to know this stuff so they can plan things around your party. Remember do not stress yourself out over this considering it is the first step.

The next and most expensive step is buying your materials that are needed for the party like ingredients for the food, party favors, table cloths, napkins, plates, etc. If you have a theme it is best to go to a party store and check to see if they have packages that you can buy. That can save you a few dollars. If you cannot find those packages anywhere, go to your local Walmart and buy the supplies you can find. Getting the basic stuff as in napkins, plates, forks, spoons, and party favors first can save you some time. Now far as the food, you need to buy those ingredients a few days prior to the party so the stuff you need will not rot or go bad. Say you are making chicken salad sandwiches, you don’t want to buy the chicken and bread months before the party because the bread will get hard or mold and the chicken will go bad in the fridge. Other things like party favors can be bought months before the party because they will not mold or rot. Make sure to buy enough of everything. Do not buy for fifty people when you invited a hundred. Trust me you will run out eventually.

The last step in successful party planning is sending out invitations. It is important to send out invitations way before the party. There are several ways to send out an invitation to a party. You can print them out, buy pre-printed ones and mail them, use an evite program that will email your invite to everyone specifically, hand deliver it to the person’s mail box to show how important it is, or personally call and invite them. After deciding on the type of invitations, you need to get them out pretty quickly so make your guest list and get to sending them. People need time to clear their schedule to come to this party and to buy gifts if they need too. I would prefer sending them out around three or four weeks prior to the event. In the invitations give the time, place, date, and RSVP number. Tell the people to call and make reservations so you can buy enough supplies. If you feel like it is necessary, remind the people two or three times before the event.

As demonstrated planning a party can be a hassle. It consists of setting a date and time, buying the needed supplies, and sending out the invitations. These steps can be revised a little if you find a problem with them but I found that these steps work very well. Benefits of taking these steps are having a good turnout of people there, having enough food for everyone, and it generally boosts your self-esteem when it turns out well.

The 10 Essential Steps of Planning a Party

Planning a fun party that people will talk about for months can seem daunting.

Whether it is a birthday party, costume party, or a quaint dinner party , follow these simple steps to plan a party that will be enjoyed by everyone.

There is a lot to consider and to remember when planning a party, so we have made it easy with a free printable party planning checklist. Just scroll to the bottom to grab your copy!

Determine the party’s budget (and be realistic)

The size of the budget will determine all other aspects of the party, from where it will be held to the food and activities.

Have a clear idea of how much is available to spend, and don’t feel pressured by other extravagant parties you see online to spend more than you are financially comfortable with.

You can create a great party on a limited budget and we have tons of DIY ideas to help you.

Prioritize the spending based on what is most important to you

A party consists of many different expenses, including invitations, food, beverages, decorations, servers, and clean-up.

Decide what is most important and spend the budget accordingly. If you think you can handle DIY decorations, and prefer to have the party catered to save time and stress over feeding guests, then allocate more of your budget for food.

If you have a child who would go crazy over a visit from a princess or other character, identify how much that would take from the budget and then divide up the rest amongst other categories.

The common areas where party budgets go include food (snacks, cake/cupcakes, drinks, meals, etc), decorations, party favors, and activities.

Keep an ongoing shopping list to make sure you purchase everything needed, and can catch deals ahead of time when you see them.

Choose a theme for the party

Whether it is a birthday, anniversary, or wedding, every party needs a theme. The theme should be specific to the guest(s) of honor to make it a more memorable event.

For example, at a 50th wedding anniversary party for a couple who enjoys scuba diving, an underwater theme may be appropriate.

Here are some ideas for planning a party that is personalized to the guest of honor:

  • A child’s party can be themed around a show, character, or topic they love. For example, a child who loves dinosaur will LOVE these ideas for a Dinosaur Birthday Party
  • Create a graduation party based on the school or location of the graduate’s next endeavor.
  • Choose a color theme or one of these great theme ideas for adults .

Choose the party location

There are pros and cons to all types of party locations, including having it at home or a public event space.

A party at home will not require a rental fee but may require cleaning fees for carpets, rental fees for tents and tables, or not have any additional expense at all.

However you will have the benefit of being able to slowly set up on your time and having access to items that might easily be forgotten at an off-site location such as cleaning supplies for accidental messes.

An event at a local hotel or another party venue will require a fee but may simplify other aspects such as food and clean-up after. There might be restrictions on how many people can attend, or limited availability as well.

Create themed invitations

Themed invitations are a fun way to give party goers a glimpse into what to forward to for the event, and can be purchased, sent online or via text for free, or you can create DIY invitations.

Once you have determined a date and time, invitations can be purchased from an invitation site for formal occasions or purchased on Etsy and printed on a computer or at a print shop for any type of party.

Use graphics, color, and fonts to create an invitation that introduces the guests to the party .

For the ocean party, an invitation in the shape of a fish and printed on blue paper will easily identify the ocean theme, as would an invitation with images of fish, whales, and other marine life.

Choose food and beverages around the party theme

Having themed food is one of the best ways to bring the party to life.

An underwater theme can be complemented with seafood, fish, blue-colored beverages, and fish crackers.

Be creative and name foods to go with the theme, even if the food itself does not.

Examples includle sand dollar sugar cookies, firewood (pretzel sticks for a camping theme), or pup treats for a puppy theme.

You also want to be sure that you are planning appropriately for the ages of the party guests—check out these ideas for party foods for a one-year-old’s birthday!

Plan party activities that guests will love

Plan a fun icebreaker for adult parties and multiple activities for children’s parties.

An icebreaker will help adults mix together and enjoy getting to know each other. Sticking with the ocean theme, an example of an ice breaker would be Ocean Matching.

Each guest is given a card when they arrive. One side of the card has the name of an underwater animal, and the other side has a picture of an underwater animal (the name and picture should be different).

The object is to find the other person who has the picture to go with the name on the front of the card. The first to find their pair wins a prize.

We have tons of party activities ideas over at our Pinterest account , so make sure to check it out and follow for more!

Plan decorations to go with the theme

Have fun and get creative with it comes to planning decorations for the birthday or other event.

unicorn and rainbow party decor and birthday cakes

Use color and texture in addition to themed decorations. Use imagination and creativity to make the party decorations unique and memorable.

Using a mix of easy DIY decorations and purchased items such as balloons works well. For a big impact on a budget, create a balloon backdrop in the colors of the party.

Arrive early and set up the party

If the event is being held at a local venue, verify who will set up the decorations, food and prepare for any additional activities.

Arrive at least 30 minutes early if the venue is handling everything. Arrive one hour early if possible if you will be setting up anything.

This will provide sufficient time to make changes and corrections if any are needed. Time always seems to fly by when setting up for a party.

Decorate for the party

Set up for the party by starting with the big backdrops or decorations first. Anything that makes a wow statement for the party should be done first, in case you run out of time. Little details can be finished up as guest are arriving.

  • Arrange and decorate tables and chairs as well as any place settings or centerpieces.
  • Set up activities in the area they will occur or make a staging table for crafts and other activities that will be brought out.
  • Arrange food and drink stations, and layout party favors or goody bags.
  • If guests arrive while still finishing up, greet them and invite them to help themselves to a drink or simple activity, or if they offer to help, by all means, take them up on it!

Have fun at the party

candy plates with cup and scoop

The party has started, people are arriving, and it is time to sit back and have some fun with the guests.

Don’t forget to take pictures to commemorate the event, or ask someone to be in charge of making sure to get a few pictures of each activity and guest that way you can relax and enjoy the day!

How to plan an essay

Essay planning is an important step in academic essay writing.

Proper planning helps you write your essay faster, and focus more on the exact question.  As you draft and write your essay, record any changes on the plan as well as in the essay itself, so they develop side by side.

One way to start planning an essay is with a ‘box plan’.

First, decide how many stages you want in your argument – how many important points do you want to make? Then, divide a box into an introduction + one paragraph for each stage + a conclusion.

Next, figure out how many words per paragraph you'll need.

Usually, the introduction and conclusion are each about 10% of the word count. This leaves about 80% of the word count for the body - for your real argument. Find how many words that is, and divide it by the number of body paragraphs you want. That tells you about how many words each paragraph can have.

Remember, each body paragraph discusses one main point, so make sure each paragraph's long enough to discuss the point properly (flexible, but usually at least 150 words).

For example, say the assignment is

What is an essay?

Generally speaking, an essay designates a literary work in which the author defends a point of view or a personal conviction, using logical arguments and literary devices in order to inform and convince the reader.

So – although essays can be broadly split into four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive – an essay can simply be described as a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. 🤔

The purpose of an essay is to present a coherent argument in response to a stimulus or question and to persuade the reader that your position is credible, believable and reasonable. 👌

So, a ‘good’ essay relies on a confident writing style – it’s clear, well-substantiated, focussed, explanatory and descriptive . The structure follows a logical progression and above all, the body of the essay clearly correlates to the tile – answering the question where one has been posed.

But, how do you go about making sure that you tick all these boxes and keep within a specified word count? Read on for the answer as well as an example essay structure to follow and a handy step-by-step guide to writing the perfect essay – hooray. 🙌

Sometimes, it is helpful to think about your essay like it is a well-balanced argument or a speech – it needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question in a coherent manner. ⚖️

Of course, essays can vary significantly in length but besides that, they all follow a fairly strict pattern or structure made up of three sections. Lean into this predictability because it will keep you on track and help you make your point clearly. Let’s take a look at the typical essay structure:

#1 Introduction

Start your introduction with the central claim of your essay. Let the reader know exactly what you intend to say with this essay. Communicate what you’re going to argue, and in what order. The final part of your introduction should also say what conclusions you’re going to draw – it sounds counter-intuitive but it’s not – more on that below. 1️⃣

Make your point, evidence it and explain it. This part of the essay – generally made up of three or more paragraphs depending on the length of your essay – is where you present your argument. The first sentence of each paragraph – much like an introduction to an essay – should summarise what your paragraph intends to explain in more detail. 2️⃣

#3 Conclusion

This is where you affirm your argument – remind the reader what you just proved in your essay and how you did it. This section will sound quite similar to your introduction but – having written the essay – you’ll be summarising rather than setting out your stall. 3️⃣

No essay is the same but your approach to writing them can be. As well as some best practice tips, we have gathered our favourite advice from expert essay-writers and compiled the following 7-step guide to writing a good essay every time. 👍

#1 Make sure you understand the question

#2 complete background reading.

#3 Make a detailed plan

#4 Write your opening sentences

#5 flesh out your essay in a rough draft, #6 evidence your opinion, #7 final proofread and edit.

Now that you have familiarised yourself with the 7 steps standing between you and the perfect essay, let’s take a closer look at each of those stages so that you can get on with crafting your written arguments with confidence .

This is the most crucial stage in essay writing – r ead the essay prompt carefully and understand the question. Highlight the keywords – like ‘compare,’ ‘contrast’ ‘discuss,’ ‘explain’ or ‘evaluate’ – and let it sink in before your mind starts racing . There is nothing worse than writing 500 words before realising you have entirely missed the brief . 🧐

Unless you are writing under exam conditions , you will most likely have been working towards this essay for some time, by doing thorough background reading. Re-read relevant chapters and sections, highlight pertinent material and maybe even stray outside the designated reading list, this shows genuine interest and extended knowledge. 📚

#3 Make a detailed plan

Following the handy structure we shared with you above, now is the time to create the ‘skeleton structure’ or essay plan. Working from your essay title, plot out what you want your paragraphs to cover and how that information is going to flow. You don’t need to start writing any full sentences yet but it might be useful to think about the various quotes you plan to use to substantiate each section. 📝

Having mapped out the overall trajectory of your essay, you can start to drill down into the detail. First, write the opening sentence for each of the paragraphs in the body section of your essay. Remember – each paragraph is like a mini-essay – the opening sentence should summarise what the paragraph will then go on to explain in more detail. 🖊️

Next, it's time to write the bulk of your words and flesh out your arguments. Follow the ‘point, evidence, explain’ method. The opening sentences – already written – should introduce your ‘points’, so now you need to ‘evidence’ them with corroborating research and ‘explain’ how the evidence you’ve presented proves the point you’re trying to make. ✍️

With a rough draft in front of you, you can take a moment to read what you have written so far. Are there any sections that require further substantiation? Have you managed to include the most relevant material you originally highlighted in your background reading? Now is the time to make sure you have evidenced all your opinions and claims with the strongest quotes, citations and material. 📗

This is your final chance to re-read your essay and go over it with a fine-toothed comb before pressing ‘submit’. We highly recommend leaving a day or two between finishing your essay and the final proofread if possible – you’ll be amazed at the difference this makes, allowing you to return with a fresh pair of eyes and a more discerning judgment. 🤓

How to Write the Perfect Essay

A Step-by-Step Guide to the Perfect Essay

Step 1: plan.

This may sound time-consuming, but if you make a really good plan, you’ll actually save yourself time when it comes to writing the essay, as you’ll know where your answer is headed and won’t write yourself into a corner.

Don’t worry if you’re stuck at first! Jot down a few ideas anyway and chances are the rest will follow. I find it easiest to make a mind map, with each new “bubble” representing one of my main paragraphs. I then write quotations which will be useful for my analysis around the bubble.

For example, if I was answering the question, “To what extent is Curley’s wife portrayed as a victim in Of Mice and Men ?”, I might begin with a mind map that looks something like this:

Mind map summarising Curley's wife's appearance and reputation

You can keep adding to this plan, crossing bits out and linking the different bubbles when you spot connections between them. Even though you won’t have time to make a detailed plan under exam conditions, it can be helpful to draft a brief one, including a few key words, so that you don’t panic and go off topic when writing your essay.

If you don’t like the mind map format, there are plenty of others to choose from: you could make a table, a flowchart, or simply a list of bullet points.

Discover More

Thanks for signing up, step 2: have a clear structure.

Think about this while you’re planning: your essay is like an argument or a speech. It needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question.

Start with the basics! It’s best to choose a few major points which will become your main paragraphs. Three main paragraphs is a good number for an exam essay, since you’ll be under time pressure.

If you agree with the question overall, it can be helpful to organise your points in the following pattern:

  • YES (agreement with the question)
  • AND (another YES point)
  • BUT (disagreement or complication)

If you disagree with the question overall, try:

  • AND (another BUT point)

For example, you could structure the Of Mice and Men sample question, “To what extent is Curley’s wife portrayed as a victim in Of Mice and Men ?”, as follows:

  • YES (descriptions of her appearance)
  • AND (other people’s attitudes towards her)
  • BUT (her position as the only woman on the ranch gives her power as she uses her femininity to her advantage)

If you wanted to write a longer essay, you could include additional paragraphs under the YES/AND categories, perhaps discussing the ways in which Curley’s wife reveals her vulnerability and insecurities, and shares her dreams with the other characters. Alternatively, you could also lengthen your essay by including another BUT paragraph about her cruel and manipulative streak.

Of course, this is not necessarily the only right way to answer this essay question – as long as you back up your points with evidence from the text, you can take any standpoint that makes sense.

Smiling student typing on laptop

Step 3: Back up your points with well-analysed quotations

You wouldn’t write a scientific report without including evidence to support your findings, so why should it be any different with an essay? Even though you aren’t strictly required to substantiate every single point you make with a quotation, there’s no harm in trying.

A close reading of your quotations can enrich your appreciation of the question and will be sure to impress examiners. When selecting the best quotations to use in your essay, keep an eye out for specific literary techniques. For example, you could highlight Curley’s wife’s use of a rhetorical question when she says, a”n’ what am I doin’? Standin’ here talking to a bunch of bindle stiffs.” This might look like:

The rhetorical question “an’ what am I doin’?” signifies that Curley’s wife is very insecure; she seems to be questioning her own life choices. Moreover, she does not expect anyone to respond to her question, highlighting her loneliness and isolation on the ranch.

Other literary techniques to look out for include:

  • Tricolon – a group of three words or phrases placed close together for emphasis
  • Tautology – using different words that mean the same thing: e.g. “frightening” and “terrifying”
  • Parallelism – ABAB structure, often signifying movement from one concept to another
  • Chiasmus – ABBA structure, drawing attention to a phrase
  • Polysyndeton – many conjunctions in a sentence
  • Asyndeton – lack of conjunctions, which can speed up the pace of a sentence
  • Polyptoton – using the same word in different forms for emphasis: e.g. “done” and “doing”
  • Alliteration – repetition of the same sound, including assonance (similar vowel sounds), plosive alliteration (“b”, “d” and “p” sounds) and sibilance (“s” sounds)
  • Anaphora – repetition of words, often used to emphasise a particular point

Don’t worry if you can’t locate all of these literary devices in the work you’re analysing. You can also discuss more obvious techniques, like metaphor, simile and onomatopoeia. It’s not a problem if you can’t remember all the long names; it’s far more important to be able to confidently explain the effects of each technique and highlight its relevance to the question.

Person reading a book outside

Step 4: Be creative and original throughout

Anyone can write an essay using the tips above, but the thing that really makes it “perfect” is your own unique take on the topic. If you’ve noticed something intriguing or unusual in your reading, point it out – if you find it interesting, chances are the examiner will too!

Creative writing and essay writing are more closely linked than you might imagine. Keep the idea that you’re writing a speech or argument in mind, and you’re guaranteed to grab your reader’s attention.

It’s important to set out your line of argument in your introduction, introducing your main points and the general direction your essay will take, but don’t forget to keep something back for the conclusion, too. Yes, you need to summarise your main points, but if you’re just repeating the things you said in your introduction, the body of the essay is rendered pointless.

Think of your conclusion as the climax of your speech, the bit everything else has been leading up to, rather than the boring plenary at the end of the interesting stuff.

To return to Of Mice and Men once more, here’s an example of the ideal difference between an introduction and a conclusion:

Introduction

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men , Curley’s wife is portrayed as an ambiguous character. She could be viewed either as a cruel, seductive temptress or a lonely woman who is a victim of her society’s attitudes. Though she does seem to wield a form of sexual power, it is clear that Curley’s wife is largely a victim. This interpretation is supported by Steinbeck’s description of her appearance, other people’s attitudes, her dreams, and her evident loneliness and insecurity.
Overall, it is clear that Curley’s wife is a victim and is portrayed as such throughout the novel in the descriptions of her appearance, her dreams, other people’s judgemental attitudes, and her loneliness and insecurities. However, a character who was a victim and nothing else would be one-dimensional and Curley’s wife is not. Although she suffers in many ways, she is shown to assert herself through the manipulation of her femininity – a small rebellion against the victimisation she experiences.

Both refer back consistently to the question and summarise the essay’s main points. However, the conclusion adds something new which has been established in the main body of the essay and complicates the simple summary which is found in the introduction.

Sometimes you just need to throw a great party! There’s nothing like hosting and seeing all your friends together in the same place. But how do you do it? With adequate planning, the right food and music, a solid guest list, and a few things to do, your party is sure to be a hit and maybe even a tradition!

Determining Your Party Plans

Step 1 Pick a place.

  • If you plan on having quite a few guests and can’t do it at home, you may want to make reservations at your venue beforehand to make sure they can accommodate you. It’s best to call at least a week in advance to give yourself the best odds of getting the okay. Make sure to set a date on the invitation on when to RSVP, if the don't respond by then call them.

Step 2 Determine a date and time for your party.

  • Also, make sure to pick a date when most of your guests are free. Do you know of another party happening or a community event or holiday that has everyone booked? You may have to do some asking around beforehand to figure out if this is the case. [2] X Research source
  • You may also want to have a duration of time for your party. That way when it hits midnight, your guests know that they don’t have to go home, but they can’t stay with you (or at the venue that’s closing). It also helps people not have to worry about an unscheduled departure.
  • Reader Poll: We asked 191 wikiHow readers who've hosted parties, and 55% of them agreed that having a specific end time is helpful for people to know what to expect. [Take Poll]

Step 3 Decide on a theme.

  • Do something that’s accessible, especially if the party this weekend. An all black party is easy; a 1940s party is not (unless you give everyone adequate prep time).
  • Do something that’s not clothing related. A sandwich party (where everyone brings a different sandwich) could be quite the hit. Not to mention the classic wine or beer tasting party, too. Chocolate tasting is also seriously fun.
  • Do something with a broader theme, like a “golf” or “owl” themed party. You could then have “par”faiths or chicken wings, and other themed fare.
  • Or don’t have a theme at all. Sometimes it’s just nice for friends to get together and enjoy each others’ company.

Step 4 Plan your guest list.

  • Not everyone wants to dance and not everyone wants to listen to the music; some people want to talk and relax . If your party is one kind or the other, take that into account with your guest list. However, if you can, try to accommodate for different interests and levels of social comfort with space planning if it is possible, and, if applicable, account for different age groups.
  • Also determine whether you want your friends to bring friends or not. That could seriously change how many heads you have to plan for and mouths you have to feed.

Step 5 Decide on a...

  • A good way to deflect the costs of a party is to have a potluck. This way everyone chips in and is a part of the fun and you don’t have to pay for all the food. You could also specifically instruct certain people to bring drinks, ice, plates, napkins, and cutlery.

Step 6 Get the word out.

  • You could also make invitations or buy them. Pass them out within a reasonable time frame of notice. If you plan on instructing your invitees to bring friends, don't send out the invitations too soon or you could end up with a bigger party population than you can handle. If you are allowing friends bring friends, put a limit on the amount of friends they may bring, otherwise you may be overwhelmed with the swarm of people you don't know when they arrive.

Setting Up the Party

Step 1 Prepare and set out your food.

  • Do not neglect drinks, ice, cups, napkins, plates, forks, and knives, too. You’ll also need some method of chilled storage (like a large cooler) to keep the drinks cold as well.
  • If you’re of age, be sure to offer non-alcoholic drinks if you are offering an array of alcoholic drinks – not everyone wants to or can consume alcohol. What’s more, you don’t want a bunch of drunk guests trashing the area and no sober drivers to get them home.
  • Always make sure that none of your guests have allergies or serious diet restrictions; if they do, make sure there is food for them to enjoy, too.

Step 2 Make a party playlist.

  • If you don't have a lot of your own tunes, ask your guests to bring their own. You could also play an internet radio station that has whatever is hot, and jam away.

Step 3 Set the mood and tone of the party with lighting and decorations.

  • As for decorations, this bit is completely up to you. Are you going to literally roll out a red carpet for your red carpet party? Go old school with streamers? Make it look like Christmas threw up in your house? Generally your theme will dictate the decorations. And none is fine, too, if that’s how you roll.

Martha Stewart

Hosting at home creates a canvas for self-expression. "To entertain at home is a rediscovery–of rooms and settings, of your favorite things, and particularly of your own tastes and ideas."

Step 4 If necessary, clean your house.

  • It's a good idea to have some cleaning stuff around, like a stain stick just in case someone spills on themselves or your furniture. Make sure there is enough toilet paper, too. It may sound weird, but you don't want the only memory of your party to be an empty tube, and you really don't want someone you may not know using your hand towels.

Step 5 Have some party games set up.

  • Rock Band is a good game to have going on in the background for parties. This game is available on multiple game systems with the objective of playing as members of a band with the use of the guitar, microphone and drum kit included with the game.
  • The Guitar Hero series is another good one. This can be a one or two player game depending on which edition you choose. Like Rock Band, it uses its own controllers of the guitar nature to play through the game's levels.
  • Dance Dance Revolution rounds out this trio. It can be one or two player depending on what controllers you have available. Step to the music as directed by the arrows on the screen. Even if only a few people play this game, depending on which edition you choose, can provide some great music.

Step 6 Have plans to address rules and guest safety.

  • If you're at a venue, you may need to remind everyone to act responsibly. If they get loud and disorderly, you could either be kicked out or asked to never return.
  • If drinking is happening at your home, you need to decide how you want to run it. Are there minors present, too? Will you watch and care for your guests if they become too drunk? We'll address more details in the next section.

Making Your Party a Success

Step 1 Take pictures.

  • If you're going all out, set up a "photo booth" – an area of the room set up specifically for taking photos. Place a piece of fabric on the backdrop, decorate it as you see fit, and keep a basket of props handy for people to use to take funny photos. It's also a good activity for bored guests. [9] X Research source

Step 2 Be a social butterfly.

  • If this an issue, consider getting a game together that involves everyone. Charades, Heads Up, and even games like Truth or Dare can be classic hits.

Step 3 Clean as you go.

  • Be sure to keep the trash and recycling in an open area. If it gets full, people will likely keep piling it up until its unmanageable, so get at it as soon as possible to avoid it spilling everywhere later in the night.

Step 4 If your guests are drinking in your home, take their keys.

  • You could also designate someone as the key keeper, so you’re not dealing with all the responsibilities. If you know someone isn’t drinking of their own accord, ask them if they could do this for you – you already have to deal with everything else!

Step 5 As your guests leave, give them a token from the party.

  • Make sure to tag everyone in all your photos, too, when all is said and done. People will be reminded of how fun your party was and be looking forward to your next one. What will the next party's theme be?

how to plan a perfect party essay

How to Plan a Birthday Party

Step 1: set a budget.

Setting a budget is the first essential step in planning a birthday party. You should determine the amount of money you’re willing to spend on the event. Consider all potential expenses, such as venue rental, decorations, food, beverages, and entertainment. Having a clear budget in mind will help you make informed decisions throughout the planning process. It will prevent overspending and ensure that you allocate funds to the most important aspects of the party. Take into account the number of guests you plan to invite and the overall scale of the celebration. Be realistic and practical with your budget, ensuring it aligns with your financial capabilities. Setting a budget provides a clear guideline to follow and helps you prioritize your expenses accordingly, avoiding financial stress or surprises along the way. Take the time to carefully assess your finances and determine a reasonable budget for a birthday party.

When setting a budget, consider cost-saving options that still allow you to create a memorable event. Look for affordable venues or consider hosting the party at your home or in a local park to save on rental fees. DIY decorations and homemade treats can add a personal touch while keeping expenses in check. You can also explore free or low-cost entertainment options, such as organizing fun games or setting up a movie night. Additionally, keep track of your spending throughout the planning process to ensure you stay within your budget limits. By setting a budget and being mindful of your expenses, you can plan a fantastic birthday party that brings joy to everyone without breaking the bank.

Step 2: Choose a Theme

Selecting a theme is an exciting and important part of birthday party planning. Consider the interests, hobbies, or favorite characters of the birthday person when choosing a theme. It could be a superhero party, a princess-themed celebration, a sports extravaganza, or a simple and elegant color scheme. The options are endless! Once you have a theme in mind, it becomes easier to choose decorations, activities, and even the cake. A well-chosen theme adds excitement and cohesiveness to the party, making it more memorable for both the birthday person and the guests. So, let your imagination run wild and pick a theme that reflects the birthday celebrant’s personality and preferences.

When selecting a theme, think about the decorations, costumes, and props that will enhance the party atmosphere. You can incorporate the chosen theme into various elements, such as balloons, banners, table settings, and centerpieces. Whether it’s a tropical luau, a magical fairy tale, or a vibrant carnival, the decorations should create a visually appealing and immersive experience for everyone attending the party. Additionally, you can incorporate the theme into the activities and games planned for the celebration. For instance, a pirate-themed party could involve a treasure hunt, while a movie-themed party might include a screening of the birthday person’s favorite film. Choosing a theme sets the tone for the entire event and makes it more fun and engaging for both the guests and the guest of honor.

Step 3: Determine the Venue

Choosing the right venue for your birthday party is crucial. Consider factors such as the number of guests, the theme of the party, and the type of celebration you envision. If you’re planning an intimate gathering, hosting it at home can be cost-effective and convenient. However, for larger parties or if you prefer a different ambiance, you may want to explore renting a community hall, a local park, or a party venue. This aligns with your chosen theme. It’s essential to book the venue well in advance to secure your desired date and time, as popular locations can get booked quickly. When selecting a venue, also consider its amenities and facilities, such as parking availability, restrooms, and any additional services it may offer. For example, catering or audiovisual equipment. By carefully determining the venue, you can create the right setting for your birthday party. This will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Once you’ve chosen the venue, consider its size and layout to plan the seating arrangement, activity areas, and any additional decorations or props you may need. Take into account the venue’s capacity and ensure it can comfortably accommodate your guest list. If necessary, make arrangements for additional seating or tables to ensure everyone has a place to enjoy the festivities. Also, consider the logistics of the venue, such as accessibility and transportation options for your guests. By thoughtfully determining the venue, you can create a welcoming and engaging space that sets the stage for an unforgettable birthday celebration.

Step 4: Compile the Guest List

Compiling the guest list is a vital task when planning a birthday party. Consider the birthday person’s preferences, as well as your own, when finalizing who to invite. Start by making a list of close family members, friends, and colleagues to include in the celebration. Consider the venue capacity and any budget constraints when determining the number of guests. Ensure that you have accurate contact information for each person on the guest list to make it easier to invite. Keep in mind any relationships or dynamics to ensure a harmonious gathering. By carefully compiling the guest list, you can ensure that all the important people in the birthday person’s life are present to celebrate this special occasion.

Once you have the guest list finalized, it’s helpful to categorize it into different groups or categories. For example, immediate family, relatives, friends, or colleagues. This can assist in making decisions related to seating arrangements, food preferences, or any specific activities you might plan. Additionally, keep track of RSVPs and any dietary restrictions or preferences indicated by guests. By compiling the guest list in an organized manner, you can better manage the logistics of the party. This will ensure that everyone feels included and welcome.

Step 5: Send out Invitations

Sending out invitations is crucial to ensuring your guests are informed and excited about your birthday party. Depending on your preference, you can choose between traditional paper invitations or digital invitations sent via email or social media platforms. Include essential details such as the date, time, venue, and any specific instructions or requests. Personalize the invitations with the birthday person’s name and the chosen theme, if applicable. Ensure that the invitations are clear and concise, providing all the necessary information for guests to plan their attendance. Consider the preferred method of communication for each guest and select the best means of sending invitations.

As you send out invitations, keep track of RSVPs and responses. This will help you estimate the number of attendees and plan accordingly for seating, food, and other party arrangements. Be sure to send the invitations well in advance, allowing your guests enough time to respond and make arrangements to attend the party. By sending out invitations promptly and efficiently, you can build anticipation and excitement among your guests, ensuring a high turnout and a successful birthday celebration.

Step 6: Plan the Menu

Planning the menu is an important aspect of organizing a birthday party. Consider the theme of the party, the preferences of the birthday person, and the dietary restrictions or allergies of your guests. Determine whether you will prepare the food yourself or hire a catering service. Take into account the party time-whether it’s a lunch, dinner, or a snacks-and-desserts affair—and plan the menu accordingly. Offer a variety of food options to cater to different tastes and dietary needs. Consider serving finger foods, appetizers, main courses, desserts, and beverages. If possible, incorporate the theme into the menu by adding creative names to the dishes or customizing the presentation. By planning a well-thought-out menu, you can ensure your guests are well-fed and satisfied throughout the celebration.

Once you have finalized the menu, create a detailed shopping list of all the ingredients and supplies you will need. Take into account the number of guests and adjust the quantities accordingly. Consider any preparation or cooking time required for each dish and plan your schedule accordingly. If you are preparing the food yourself, make sure to allocate enough time for cooking, plating, and setting up the food stations. If you hire a catering service, communicate your menu preferences and dietary requirements. By planning the menu meticulously, you can create a delightful culinary experience for your guests, making the birthday party even more enjoyable and memorable.

Step 7: Organize Entertainment and Activities

Organizing entertainment and activities is a key element in ensuring your birthday party is enjoyable and engaging for your guests. Consider the age group of the attendees, the birthday person’s interests, and the overall theme of the party when planning entertainment. You can hire a professional entertainer, such as a magician or a clown, to keep guests entertained. Alternatively, you can plan DIY activities such as games, crafts, or even a karaoke session. Consider the space available at the venue and ensure that the entertainment and activities are suitable and enjoyable for the guests. Also, think about any special requests or surprises you might want to incorporate, such as a surprise performance or a themed photo booth. By organizing exciting entertainment and activities, you can create a lively and memorable atmosphere that will keep your guests entertained throughout the celebration.

When planning activities, create a schedule or timeline to ensure smooth flow. Allocate specific time slots for each activity or entertainment segment. This will help you keep track of timing and ensure all planned activities are completed on time. Provide clear instructions and guidance to guests, especially for interactive or group activities. Additionally, prepare any necessary supplies or equipment in advance to ensure everything runs smoothly. By organizing entertainment and activities with careful consideration, you can create a fun-filled and engaging experience that will leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Step 8: Decorate the Venue

Decorating the venue is an exciting part of planning a birthday party. Consider the chosen theme and color scheme when selecting decorations. Hang up banners, balloons, and streamers to create a festive atmosphere. Use tablecloths, centerpieces, and themed tableware to add a special touch to the dining area. Set up a backdrop or a photo booth area where guests can capture memorable moments. Consider incorporating personalized elements, such as photo displays or customized signage, to make the decorations more meaningful. Pay attention to lighting and ambiance, using string lights or candles to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. By decorating the venue thoughtfully, you can transform the space into a visually appealing and captivating setting for the birthday celebration.

As you decorate the venue, consider the layout and flow of the space. Arrange furniture and props in a way that encourages interaction and movement. Ensure that the decorations do not obstruct guest movement or impede any planned activities. Pay attention to details, such as signage or directional indicators, to guide guests to different areas or stations. If possible, enlist the help of friends or family members to assist with the setup, ensuring that everything is in place before the party begins. By decorating the venue strategically, you can create an inviting and visually appealing environment that enhances the overall experience for your guests and makes the birthday party truly memorable.

Step 9: Organize Party Favors

Organizing party favors is a wonderful way to show appreciation to your guests and leave them with a lasting memento of the birthday party. Consider small, personalized gifts or theme-based items that tie in with the overall party concept. Choose age-appropriate and memorable party favors, serving as a keepsake of the celebration. Take into account your guests’ interests and preferences to select items they will appreciate. Consider practical items like customized keychains, mini photo frames, or personalized bookmarks. Alternatively, you can opt for edible treats or small activity kits that align with the party theme. By organizing thoughtful and personalized party favors, you can make your guests feel special. This will ensure that they have a tangible reminder of the fun they had at the birthday celebration.

As you organize party favors, ensure they are properly prepared and presented. Consider packaging them in attractive gift bags or boxes, and including a personalized thank-you note or tag. If feasible, distribute the party favors at the end of the celebration as a parting gift to your guests. Alternatively, you can set up a designated area where guests can choose their own favors before leaving. Pay attention to any special instructions or considerations, such as dietary restrictions or allergens, to ensure that the party favors are suitable for everyone. By organizing party favors with care and attention to detail, you can make a lasting impression on your guests. You can also leave them with a token of gratitude that they will cherish.

Step 10: Coordinate the Day of the Party

On the day of the birthday party, it’s crucial to coordinate all the elements to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Arrive at the venue early to set up any last-minute decorations, ensure seating arrangements are in place, and verify that all the necessary supplies and equipment are ready to use. Coordinate with any hired vendors, such as caterers or entertainers, to ensure they are on time and have a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Greet guests as they arrive, guiding them to the designated areas and making them feel welcome. Throughout the party, keep a watchful eye on the schedule, ensuring activities and entertainment run according to plan. By effectively coordinating the day of the party, you can create a well-organized and enjoyable experience for both the birthday person and the guests.

During the party, be attentive to the needs of your guests and address any unforeseen issues or concerns that may arise. Ensure that food and beverages are replenished regularly, and that everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable time. Coordinate any surprises or special moments planned for the birthday person, ensuring they occur seamlessly and add to the excitement of the celebration. Maintain open communication with your team or any helpers you may have. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page and ready to assist as needed. By efficiently coordinating the party day, you can ensure everything runs smoothly. This will leave you with happy guests and a successful birthday celebration.

Planning a birthday party can be an exciting and fulfilling experience with the right approach. By setting a budget, choosing a theme, selecting a suitable venue, compiling a guest list, sending out invitations, planning the menu, organizing entertainment and activities, decorating the venue, arranging party favors, and coordinating the day of the event, you’ll be well-prepared to throw an unforgettable celebration. Remember, attention to detail and thoughtful consideration of the birthday person’s preferences are key to creating a truly memorable experience. So gather your creativity, get organized, and let the birthday planning adventure begin!

  • String lights: Relatively inexpensive, kids love the fairy-like charm of string lights. You can wind them through trees, drape them over a patio or string them from wall to wall. String lights will set the mood, and your guests will be all aglow with oohs and ahhs.
  • Use bold, basic colors: Streamers, balloons and banners (all of which can be made or bought at your local dollar store) are great, inexpensive, way to add quantity to your decor. Save your budget for a few incredible focal points. For example, for a pirate-themed party, use basic black and red colors and then accent these basic colors with centerpiece decorations like a pirate ship pinata.
  • Hang paper flowers: Using tissue paper or cardstock, you can create a festive atmosphere for a kid’s party by hanging paper flowers from the ceiling or making paper flower bouquets.
  • Finger foods: Keep it fun and simple with grab-and-go snacks perfect for pint-sized hands or even adult appetites. From pizza pinwheels to veggie shooters, you can create easy, delicious finger foods right in your own kitchen.
  • Make-Your-Own: Kids love to get creative. Save yourself some work with a make-your-own station. They can decorate their own cupcakes, dip their own candied apples, add toppings to fruit or make their own pizzas.
  • Grilling: Feeding a lot of guests on a budget? Grilling out can give you the best bang for your buck. Put burgers, hot dogs and some corn on the grill and set up a condiments station. Add some chips with dip and a few fresh vegetables to make a simple but well-rounded meal for a crowd.
  • Tap into creative powers by letting kids design and wear their own capes at a superhero-themed party.
  • Bring out the bling by giving guests a chance to decorate and wear their own crowns at a princess party.
  • Get kids on the hunt for buried treasure with custom treasure maps that set them off on a backyard treasure hunt.
