Guide to PhD study

A PhD is a research degree where you spend a significant amount of time investigating and analysing your chosen topic. Find out who will supervise you and the typical structure of a PhD at Sussex.

PhD, Integrated PhD or MPhil?

  • A PhD usually takes four years full time and up to six years part time. You conduct a piece of research that makes a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding in your chosen field. You graduate with the degree title Doctor of Philosophy.
  • An Integrated PhD takes up to five years full time and eight years part time. It includes an initial year of rigorous training in the research skills needed to become a skilled practitioner. You'll need to satisfactorily complete all the required elements in the first year in order to progress to the research phase of the PhD.
  • An MPhil typically takes three years full time and four years part time. You still conduct an independent piece of research but in less depth than with a PhD. You graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy. If you choose an MPhil, you might be able to change to a PhD during your studies.

Who supervises me during my PhD?

You are matched with two supervisors or a supervisory team experienced in the field of your research interests.

They help you to refine your research project and produce a realistic research plan.

You need to work well independently to complete a PhD, as your supervisors will not tell you exactly what to read or how to design and carry out work on your thesis.

Search for faculty members on our PhD prospectus

What is the typical structure of a PhD?

Plan your research.

In your first year, after your induction and meetings with your supervisors, you write a detailed research plan.

For some research projects, you may need to gain ethical approval before any fieldwork or data collection can start.

Your supervisor will advise you on this.

Complete your annual review and progress reports

Each year you submit a report outlining your progess to your supervisors. This is called the annual review.

In your report, you need to show a suitable amount of progression in order to continue with your PhD.

Your supervisors also write a report on your progress.

Write your thesis

You need to write up your research in a thesis. After your third year (if you are doing a full-time PhD), you may be able to apply for a writing-up year.

You can only apply for a writing-up year if you have finished conducting your formal research and your supervisors agree to this.

This is called pre-submission status and you need to pay a reduced fee. If you have pre-submission status, you can spend an extra year writing up your research.

Submit your thesis

You submit the thesis to be reviewed by two examiners with expertise in your area of research.

Usually, your work is reviewed by one University of Sussex examiner and one external examiner.

Complete your viva

After the examiners have reviewed your written thesis, you have a viva (oral exam).

During the viva, the examiners ask you questions about your research.

Make corrections

After the viva, the examiners may ask you to make some changes to your thesis (known as corrections).

You must make these corrections before you can graduate.

When you've passed your viva and made any corrections to your PhD thesis, you are awarded with the degree title Doctor of Philosophy.

How to decide if taking a PhD is for you

Considering studying a PhD degree? See our advice for choosing a topic, applying and funding.

PhD and research degrees

A PhD is a research degree where you spend a significant amount of time investigating and analysing your chosen topic. PhDs and research degrees can help you pursue a career in academia although you can also apply for non-academic jobs. Taking a PhD may also be a requirement for some professions.  See how taking a PhD can benefit your career .

Taking your PhD at Sussex

Important:  If you decide to stay at Sussex, we can support you during, and up to, three years after graduation.  Find out how we can help you explore your career ideas .

Think about if a PhD is for you

If you're considering a PhD or further research, it may help to think about:

  • your career plans and if the PhD will help you pursue a career in academia
  • funding and cost and if you will be looking for a PhD studentship, or self-funding with a loan or scholarships
  • when and how you need to apply, including deadlines and course requirements.

Vitae has a useful guide for anyone  thinking about doctoral research .

Choosing your research options

Three years is a long time to spend doing research, so make sure it’s what you want to do. Think about what you want to research. Sometimes this can be dictated by your subject.

If you are considering studying a PhD, there are two options available to you.

  • apply for a funded PhD where you research a set project (most common for STEM subjects)
  • design your own research project, which you can either fund yourself, or apply for external funding (most common for Art, Humanities and Social Sciences).

Where to look for a PhD

You can look for funded opportunites using:

  • funded PhD scholarships at Sussex .

Finding a supervisor

Whether you are applying for an advertised studentship or proposing your own research topic, you will need to find a supervisor. It may be someone you know from your undergraduate/Masters degree, or someone new from a different university. See our  tips for finding a supervisor .

Choosing a university

While your choice of supervisor may determine your choice of university, it is worth looking at how institutions are rated for your subject area. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) assesses research excellence in 36 subject areas at UK universities. See  Wonkhe’s guide to understanding the REF 2021 results .

You will also find that universities have open days or postgraduate fairs for PhD or postgraduate study such as  PhD Live  fairs from FindAPhD and  other postgraduate study fairs . See  PhD visits and events at Sussex .

Funding and advice

If you are self-funding you can see our advice for  PhD loans and funding  or look for loans, scholarships and other opportunities using:

  • doctoral loan
  • FindAPhD funding
  • alternative guide to postgraduate funding online  (If you are a current Sussex student, register with your Sussex email address. Prospective Sussex taught postgrads should use 6789 as the PIN)
  • UKRI Funding .

Applying for a PhD

Research when institutions are accepting applications, their deadlines and how you need to apply. Applications for PhD studentships, for example, can open at various times throughout the year and generally have set deadlines. Most universities now have online application systems and will provide information on how to submit an application. See  information about how to apply to Sussex . Sometimes you will need to apply with a CV. See  tips for writing a CV for PhD applications .

If you get an interview the School of Life Sciences has a guide to  PhD interview preparation .

Find out more about writing a  personal statement for PhD study .

Research proposals

Your research proposal is key to your application as it sets out what you want to research and why. See our  advice for writing a research proposal if you are self funding .

Purdue University launches new online engineering doctorate

Two women collaborating at a computer, discussing the title "Doctor of Engineering" displayed on the screen

Purdue University’s highly ranked College of Engineering is offering its first 100% online doctoral degree in a highly customizable program designed for professionals who want to enhance their careers while gaining skills with practical application in their current jobs.

The new online Doctor of Engineering program from Purdue features coursework on research methodology and advanced mathematics and statistics in addition to hundreds of engineering and other courses, all culminating in a research project.

The program enables learners to tailor their courses and research project to maximally benefit their professional development goals. In the process, students can gain significant technical depth, research experience and advanced capabilities in a particulartechnology or technical domain directly related to their career goals.

“Over the years we’ve heard from many students that they want to pursue a doctoral degree but do not want to leave the jobs they are passionate about to devote four or more years to a PhD,” said Milind Kulkarni, professor and the Michael and Katherine Birck Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “Purdue’s online doctoral program gives these folks an opportunity to pursue cutting-edge applied research in the context of their work at their current company and gain that higher credential that will let them advance at work, take up teaching and more.”

The online program bridges the gap between academic research and industry practice, with the research project leading to a final report or dissertation focused less on fundamental theory and more on engineering practice and application related to on-the-job process improvements, scalability, new designs or many other potential topics.

“Cutting-edge advances in technology are rapidly emerging at the interface between traditional fields,” said Tamara Kinzer-Ursem, the Marta E. Gross Professor of Biomedical Engineering and associate dean of graduate and professional education in  Purdue’s College of Engineering . “The new interdisciplinary Doctor of Engineering degree was specifically designed for working professionals who seek to gain new skill sets in these emerging areas or to deepen their knowledge base in their areas of specialization by exploring new applications.”

While the program provides a strong foundation of theoretical, quantitative and statistical knowledge, a wide array of technical courses is available to Doctor of Engineering students. Purdue’s program also includes the opportunity to gain important professionalization skills, such as leadership development; project management; new product development; technical, report and grant writing; and pedagogical theory and practice.

To qualify for admission, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in an engineering or related discipline and have a minimum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field. A master’s degree in engineering or a related discipline is strongly preferred. Up to 30 credits of the 90-credit doctoral program can come from a previous master’s degree, pending approval.

A significant market need exists for engineers with a doctoral degree. Earning Purdue’s online Doctor of Engineering can open doors to higher salaries, leadership positions and consulting opportunities. Professionals with a doctoral degree in engineering earned approximately $25,000 more per year in 2023 compared with individuals who have attained a master’s degree.

Purdue’s College of Engineering routinely ranks among the best in the country as a whole and in numerous individual engineering disciplines. Purdue is consistently ranked as having a top three online engineering graduate program byU.S. News & World Report.

“The Doctor of Engineering builds on Purdue’s globally recognized expertise in engineering and online education,” said Dimitrios Peroulis, senior vice president for partnerships and online. “This rigorous program pairs the deep knowledge of the world-class faculty on our flagship campus with the skill of award-winning course designers to make a high-quality doctoral experience available at scale to learners wherever they are.”

Study with the world leaders in development studies and realise your potential to transform the world with our PhD by Research.

The PhD in Development Studies by Research is IDS’s advanced research degree. It is awarded to candidates after a minimum of three years study, based on completion of original and significant research in the field of Development Studies – which is assessed through a written thesis.

*Please note: It is not possible for international students to take a part-time PhD due to UK Home Office visa restrictions, and IDS does not have a distance learning mode of its PhD Programme.

World leaders in development studies

Ranked first in the world  for Development Studies  (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023) for the eighth year in a row – the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) transforms the knowledge, action and leadership needed for more equitable and sustainable development globally, through our world-class research, learning and teaching.

As a PhD researcher, you will join a thriving research community comprising more than 70 research staff and 50 postgraduate researchers. You will have access to research and teaching opportunities, as well as a substantial series of seminars presented by leading development professionals and practitioners.

Areas of study

We welcome submissions from researchers who share our commitment to:

  • upholding climate and environmental justice
  • reducing extreme inequities
  • fostering healthy and fulfilling lives
  • nurturing inclusive, democratic and accountable societies.

We are particularly interested in work that shows originality in addressing topics related to the work of our research fellows based across our ten  research clusters : business; cities; digital; governance; health and nutrition; impact and policy; participation; power; resource politics; and rural futures.

Find out more about our current PhD Researchers Find out more about our Research Fellows and their interests

Studying at IDS can potentially transform your view of the world – you grow a lot learning from this very rich and diverse community.

Each PhD researcher has a minimum of two supervisors. The number of hours of formal supervision will vary over the course of the PhD depending on the student, supervisor and type of research. IDS publishes a detailed PhD handbook which sets out expectations and responsibilities regarding supervision.

During the course of your PhD, you are required to give two seminars to the IDS community. The first, at the end of year one is called the Research Outline Seminar and this provides an overview of your PhD plans prior to beginning fieldwork. The second occurs halfway through year three. This is called the Work in Progress Seminar and it focuses on the research findings and overall arguments made in the dissertation.

Your PhD work is examined by dissertation and viva. Your thesis must be no longer than 80,000 words. These limits includes footnotes and bibliography but excludes any appendices.

You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Master’s degree. Your qualification should be in a relevant social sciences subject. In exceptional circumstances, you may be considered for the degree if you have a qualification in a different subject area.  You must also show evidence of substantial professional work experience in development-related work.

English language requirements

Students must be proficient in English. The minimum requirement is, for example, an  IELTS  grade of 7.0 overall and no less than 6.5 in each section of the IELTS test. For  detailed information on English language requirements for international students please see the University of Sussex website .

IDS requires that students register for a minimum of three years. Most students spend time on fieldwork that may take place in a development context – either overseas or in the UK. During fieldwork, students are charged a fee which is normally 65% of the full-time fee but may be subject to change.

Almost all IDS PhD researchers choose to do empirical research and fieldwork for their PhDs. The broad parameters of this research (topic and country) are usually decided by the student and included in the proposal submitted as part of the application to the PhD programme. More detailed assessments of the scope and scale of this research are usually developed in conjunction with supervisors during the first year of the PhD. Fieldwork usually lasts between 8 and 12 months and costs depend on the scope and scale of the activities. For example, participant observation and qualitative interviews undertaken in your home country and in a language with which you are familiar, may not be very expensive, but working in a country where you need visas, in-country ethical approval, and have to employ translators, transcribers, or a team of enumerators for a quantitative survey can mean that costs rapidly escalate. Where you stay, how you travel to your fieldsite, what technology you use to collect and analyse data and how long you stay will all influence the costs. IDS does not have the resources to fund any fieldwork or travel costs. There is a small conference fund and PhD students can apply for up to £450 during their PhDs if they are presenting a paper at a conference.

After having made substantial progress and completed three years of registration, students may be permitted to transfer to pre-submission status for a maximum of 12 months. IDS considers substantial progress to be the completion of three empirical chapters, supervisors’ approval and a successful work-in-progress seminar. If pre-submission status is not granted, then full-time fees are still applicable. The pre-submission fee is approximately £500 for each year or part thereof.

Unfortunately, neither IDS nor the University of Sussex can offer financial support. Applicants requiring financial assistance should contact their local Ministry of Education or Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the British Council representative (c/o British Embassy). For the latest information on fees, funding and scholarships, visit the  University of Sussex website .

Apply via the  University of Sussex online application . When completing the application form, please identify IDS on the application; the code for this is L1604R – Development Studies (IDS) (PHD).

Finding a supervisor

While you are not responsible for finding a supervisor, it is good practice to express your preferred supervisors on your application form. Applicants are assessed both on their academic credentials and on the relevance of their works to the research of one or more  IDS Research Fellows .

Distance learning

IDS is unable to accept applications for distance learning. We believe it is in the best interests of both PhD students and the Institute that the majority of the study period is spent at IDS. This offers the opportunity for ongoing interaction with other IDS members and students.

Your research proposal

When you apply, you must submit a detailed research proposal of 2000-3500 words indicating the primary research questions of your research project, a short review of the literature that you are planning to engage with, and your methodology. Find out how to write a research proposal.

Before applying, please read carefully our  guidelines on how to write your research proposal on the Sussex website . Here is a good example of a recent research proposal from a successful applicant:  Susana Araujo’s PhD research proposal to IDS, 2020 .

Application deadline

We prefer our PhD by Research students to start in September to coincide with the start of the University of Sussex autumn term. This timing will maximise your opportunities to take part in induction sessions, training and module enrolment (optional), both at IDS and the University of Sussex.

For September entry, the application deadlines are:

  • 21 June for international students
  • 21 July for UK/EU students.

In exceptional circumstances IDS may permit students to start the PhD by Research in January (for example, if visa issues prevent a September entry). The application deadline is 31 October for all January starters. We may also be able to offer some flexibility in start dates for students transferring from another organisation.

How we assess your application

When assessing your application we take into account many factors including: the quality of your research proposal, your academic qualifications, fit with IDS research priorities, previous development experience, language skills and availability of suitable supervisors.

All applications are assessed by the IDS Director of Doctoral Studies, with input from two potential supervisors. You will also be interviewed on your PhD research plans by these potential supervisors. If your application is successful, you will be contacted by the University of Sussex Admissions Office with a formal offer letter.

Presence at IDS

Your presence at IDS is vital at the early stage of your PhD when the research proposal is prepared (the first year) and then, after fieldwork, at the stage of writing up the research findings (the third year). The maximum period of registration is four years, but a PhD can be completed in three years.

SNHU Spotlight: Business Administration Graduate Tiare Hazen '23

Tiare Hazen '23, a bachelor's in business administration graduate at SNHU.

It was a busy five-year journey for Tiare Hazen ‘23 , but in 2023, she crossed the finish line and received her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Administration  from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

Hazen began classes when she was 19. Requiring flexibility, due to her schedule, she chose SNHU’s online program.

“What’s really nice is that SNHU’s classes ... (are) so accommodating that it’s easy to accomplish other things while you’re in the program,” said Hazen.

And Hazen certainly had other things to accomplish. During her time at SNHU, she gave birth to three children and enrolled in a fire academy and EMT program.

“I was able to take time off for each one of my pregnancies,” said Hazen. “And what’s really nice, too, is that I can do classes at my own (pace)  so it did not interfere with my firefighting academy or the EMT program.”

After receiving her degree, Hazen said she was happy to be an inspiration for her children. As a first-generation college student, she said graduating and being a role model for her family meant the world to her.

Graduating with such a diverse crowd of students, she said, also was important to her.

“My father is from Puerto Rico. My mom’s from Chile, who’s an immigrant,” said Hazen. “So, it means a lot being able to see all the different people here today.”

Having traveled from Michigan, Hazen said arriving at SNHU’s Commencement ceremony was nerve-wracking. But she also said she was excited to finish her long journey, with her family by her side.

“I hope to show my family that everything I did throughout this SNHU program was for them,” she said. “I’m happy that they’re here today and I can be that inspiration for them.”

A degree can change your life. Choose your program  from 200+ SNHU degrees that can take you where you want to go.
