Album Review: Liquid Tension Experiment, “Liquid Tension Experiment 3”

Is 22 years enough time? To think that the gap between Liquid Tension Experiment studio albums 2 and 3 is old enough to go out for drinks here in the U.S. is incredible. And let me say, the stuff on their third album is truly intoxicating. John Petrucci is still finding new ways to make magic on the guitar; Mike Portnoy brings the same energy and enthusiasm he has brought for decades into countless musical projects; Jordan Rudess shows us that his chops and instincts on the keys remain blistering and precise; and Tony Levin reminds us all that he is a chameleon, blending with almost anything thrown at him with his bass and chapman stick skills. Liquid Tension Experiment is a supergroup from the beginning, and no lesser word shall describe them.

So, how do you kick things off after almost 22 years of waiting? Well, to these guys, it seemed like they could do one thing: just push play. “Hypersonic,” the third single, bombards us with a shred-fest in seven that made even my static fingers tired. Though, it should be noted that this song is not just seven minutes of notes flying at a million miles an hour; the song can be cut up into four distinct parts, with soulful solo exchanges by both Petrucci and Rudess, and drum-chapman stick grooves that serve as a relative breath of fresh air. And hey, there is a vocal nugget toward the end!

The second track and single, “Beating the Odds” takes on a more traditionally structured approach, with set verses, a chorus that repeats a few times throughout, and a solo-infested bridge section. The heavy rocker might remind you of your favorite synth-driven rock from the ‘70s, such as Styx, while maintaining an edge reminiscent of Van Halen and Steve Vai. Before the third chorus, there is one of those synchronized runs, brought to us by John and Jordan, only to lead us into a solo afterward, which fades out to the peculiar third track.

For the uninitiated, Liquid Tension Experiment tend to jam out many of their ideas, usually in a short amount of time. Some of these ideas blossom into intricate compositions, such as the first two tracks on the album, whereas others might turn into something freer. One of these tracks is “Liquid Evolution” (maybe you might find a connection to a similarly named song on their second album), which gives “Liquid” Levin an opportunity to show off the bottom end for us listeners. Portnoy’s percussion on this track is also notable, utilizing instruments and rhythms that you will not hear in most of his other stuff.

I still feel there was no better song than “The Passage of Time” to release as the first single for this album. This is the first song that the four gentlemen wrote when they quarantined together in July of 2020, and it is fitting that this turned into one of the most memorable tracks of the bunch. Weirdly enough, it almost feels like a huge prog-metal epic served to us in just over seven minutes; everyone’s personality is in full display in this song. This is one of the songs to show people who are just getting into 21 st century progressive rock/metal.

After all we have heard from the first four tracks, something out of the ordinary was bound to happen—enter “Chris and Kevin’s Amazing Odyssey.” A follow-up to “Chris and Kevin’s Excellent Adventure” from Liquid Tension Experiment , and “Chris and Kevin’s Bogus Journey” from Spontaneous Combustion (by Liquid Tension Trio, with Rudess, Levin, and Portnoy), it carries on the tradition of duets between bassist Tony Levin and Mike Portnoy. With no distinct melody or rhythm in the first half, this avant-garde duet is like going to the dentist’s office… but like, a cool dentist’s office. If you have any idea what Portnoy and Levin used to give us with their duets, you might have an idea of how this one will sound.

On the next track, Liquid Tension Experiment decided to try something new: a cover track. What is not new, however, is that they have been playing this track together as a group for almost fifteen years, having performed it during their 2008 run of shows. “Rhapsody in Blue,” originally composed by George Gershwin almost a century ago in 1924, is described as the “meticulously arranged cover” of the album, and it really does highlight the genius of the original piece, while adding in many elements that are uniquely LTE. Petrucci’s use of wah and phaser really brightens up the sound, along with Rudess’ endless line of keyboard effects that both mimic the instruments of the early 20 th century and transcend to the future. Any fans of Native Construct will really enjoy the craziness LTE dishes out in this track.

The second duet of the album was recorded in one take between Petrucci and Rudess, and it seems fitting that the composers of The Astonishing put together a ballad perfect for a musical. Keep your ears open, because you may catch a familiar Petrucci lick in this one; try to see what Dream Theater song I am talking about.

The final track of the album is a roller coaster and is chock-full of memorable LTE melodies and riffs. The mellow intro of “Key to the Imagination” is a showcase of Rudess’ ability to dance with chord progressions, with Petrucci building on a hook for a solo; this gets you ready for the onslaught to come. When the full band comes in, it is absolute groove central with some really saturated bass and juicy 7-string guitar. It definitely grabs your attention, but I personally love when it dives right back into Petrucci’s solo from the beginning—this time with a rhythm section driven by the hi-hat-happy Portnoy. From there, the song does take on a jam-vibe, with Petrucci and Rudess trading lead lines and solos, and referring back to the main riff on several occasions. To top it all off, what better way to end than a signature Petrucci solo? Some things just never change.

For all of those who have been waiting decades for the new Liquid Tension Experiment album, buckle your seatbelts—the boys delivered us another instrumental album for the ages.

The last 12 months have been an unpredictable and crazy time for everyone as we still continue to navigate the roadmap to normality and if the music industry had collectively constructed a list of things least likely to happen in 2021 you could imagine the return of progressive metal supergroup LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT would have been in amongst it. Their triumphant return after multiple decades of dormancy is now upon us as Liquid Tension Experiment 3 is due for release on April 16th via Inside Out Music . Try to contain your excitement!

If you thought a 20 year gap between releases may have left the quartet a little rusty or off the pace then you couldn’t be more misinformed. Hypersonic surges out of the gates like a speeding bullet with a frantic wave of chaos that gives you a stark reminder of just what this band of legendary musicians are capable of. The snappy drumming, twisting and turning riffs and bamboozling keyboard licks feel all so familiar like not a single step has been lost. Throw in some delightful harmonies and enticing grooves into the mix and it doesn’t take long to realise what an absolute pleasure it is to witness the return of LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT . Rather than trying to throw you into the eye of the storm, Beating The Odds takes more of a straight forward approach in the early going. As it progresses the stunning instances of masterful technicality begin to become more apparent, with every member being given the opportunity to shine and present their unique flair.  Liquid Evolution  adopts a calmer, soothing demeanour, luring you into its grasp with subtle yet effective melodies that whisk you away on a tranquil sea of escapism.

The Passage Of Time kicks it up a gear with energetic riffing that gets your blood pumping. It is a testament to the quality and talent contained within this collective that they can choose to either go hell bent, firing notes at you from all directions or perform at a more leisurely pace and still have your jaw swinging by your ankles with the sheer amount of impressive layers and shifts in tempo which are brought to the table. You get so encapsulated in what is unfolding that minutes just seem to disappear. Long term fans of the band will appreciate the return of the tongue in cheek song title series as  Chris & Kevin’s Amazing Oddysey  allows for  Mike Portnoy  and  Tony Levin to flex their muscles as the duo join forces to create an intriguing soundscape that some may find utterly perplexing to comprehend.  Rhapsody In Blue brings further diverse eccentricity to the forefront with a broad range of tones and sensations to heighten your senses. Chopping and changing aplenty keeps you guessing as to where the mad musical geniuses will venture to next as the craziness begins to get into full swing. Just sit back and take in the unshackled mastery on display.

Shades Of Hope possesses a somewhat solemn yet endearing undertone that feels instantly relatable, showing the power of music without any requirement for lyrical narrative. The established feeling of sentimentality flows through into the finale Key To The Imagination . Just as you begin to settle into what is unfolding, the theatricality and energy levels begin to rise in intensity once more. This track takes you on a captivating journey of emotions as it shifts in pacing and delivery, keeping you guessing throughout every second. Elements of enticing heaviness and vivid brightness combine effortlessly to round this release off in impressive fashion.

It may have taken a global pandemic to allow their schedules (and the stars) to align to make this possible but to witness the return of what many deemed to be an unlikely reassembly has been a true joy to behold. Whilst many are well aware of just how adept at their craft these four musicians are you can’t help but be blown away by the sheer creative strength of LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT . This release cements their position as one of the greatest, most influential instrumental bands on the planet and, even after a 20-year hiatus, they are still absolutely untouchable.

Expectations are set unreasonably high when a revered band records its first album in over twenty years, especially when it's from a collection of musicians as extraordinary as LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT . The supergroup — consisting of DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci , now DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan Rudess , former- DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist / Chapman Stick musician Tony Levin ( KING CRIMSON ) — produced two records in the late '90s that set a high bar for instrumental prog rock. The news that the group reconvened during the summer of 2020 for another studio recording after two decades attracted much attention, as well as the prospect of Portnoy recording with his former DREAM THEATER bandmates again. The resulting record, simply titled "Liquid Tension Experiment 3" in the tradition of their previous albums, doesn't quite match the near-perfect highs of its predecessors, though ultimately remains well worth the lengthy wait.

Opening track "Hypersonic" continues the tradition of first songs from prior LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT efforts, begins with a 30-second barrage of whirlwind musicianship reminding you that the band is going to take you on an expansive journey, and still has the musical chemistry to pull off every twist and turn. Petrucci storms out of the gate with crunchy metallic riffs while the rest of the band steers through a super-jazzy display of dexterity, with Portnoy impressing in particular by showing his most frenetic drumming since his Dream Theater days. Levin 's work on bass and Chapman Stick lays a thick and rumbling underpinning to the proceedings as the song weaves its way through tempo changes throughout, culminating in a scintillating display of shredding from Petrucci .

The elements that make for one hell of an album opening would be exhausting if the band tried to maintain that for entirety of the record. One of the reasons that the group is as revered as they are though is that they are capable of balancing those moments of indulgent histrionics with moments of calm, catchiness and beauty. "Beating The Odds" is a high-energy rocker that would have been at home on the soundtrack of a late '90s SEGA arcade racing game, punctuated by some of the most beautiful guitar work of Petrucci 's career. "Liquid Evolution" is a piece of new-age prog that allows for both the band and the listener to catch a breather before heavier guitar squeals from Petrucci and more pronounced keyboard work from Rudess returns to drive "The Passage Of Time" .

"Chris & Kevin's Amazing Odyssey" is another break from the frantic prog mayhem, with Levin showing how much he can bend riffs with his Chapman Stick while he's backed by Portnoy 's improvisational drumming. Over-the-top indulgence returns tenfold with the group's cover of GEORGE GERSHWIN 's "Rhapsody In Blue" . The group had performed that track on live shows over a decade ago, but the band's first proper studio recording of the song is filtered through layers of circus prog forming the perfect mix of dexterous, whimsical and bonkers that one would hope for from such a cover. "Shades Of Hope" is a beautiful single-take duet from Petrucci and Rudess that at times is evocative of Elton John 's "Funeral For A Friend" , before the album closes with the sprawling epic "Key To The Imagination" , accentuated by Rudess 's most beautiful keyboard performance on the record.

"Liquid Tension Experiment 3" isn't quite the sublime genre definer that the supergroup's first two albums were. But as outlined above, everything that made the quartet's diehard fans fall in love with those records is more than delivered in droves.
