Profile: Ohio House Democratic Caucus Leader Emilia Sykes

photo of Rep. Emilia Sykes

The election of a third Ohio House Speaker in less than a year caused a shakeup among the minority party as well. Democrats have a new leader for the first time in five years. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler has this profile of the woman at the head of the House Democratic caucus.

Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, 30,  of Akron is starting the fifth year of a job she didn’t plan to be doing.

“I was absolutely, unequivocally not going to be an elected official,” Sykes said.

Politics is the Sykes family business. Both her parents have been state lawmakers and city councilmembers – her mother Barbara was the first African American woman to serve on Akron City Council when Emilia was born.

But Emilia Sykes said she had other plans.

She’d gone south, earning a master’s and a law degree at the University of Florida. But then in 2014 her dad, then-Rep. Vernon Sykes, was being forced out of the House because of term limits – and she was concerned about those who’d lined up to replace him.

“This is not good for my community because, you know, these are the people who raised me. They raised my sister, and I've relied on them and they've shown me so much. And there's no way I could not have taken that responsibility,” Sykes said.

For 30 years, a Sykes has sat in the Ohio House seat Emilia Sykes now holds. And while her name may have helped get here there, she notes she had to win a primary and a general election.

And while she’s unique in being the daughter of two representatives, Sykes wasn’t alone in a family connection in the House. In 2015, when she was a freshman lawmaker, there were six other members who were also either children or spouses of former legislators.

Sykes was appointed ranking member on the House Finance Committee that oversees the budget. She introduced several bills, including one making Ohio the 49th state to allow victims of dating violence to get civil protection orders. It didn’t get passed in her first term but got a lot of attention -  and that bipartisan bill became a top priority in the last session, and was signed in April in a ceremony that left her choked up.

“There are so many victims who really just need help, and when you hear their stories and if you hear the sacrifices and the things that they’ve suffered through, it’s hard not to be emotional,” Sykes said at the time.

Sykes became assistant minority whip in 2016, and was picked as assistant minority leader in November. But then came the vote for Speaker on January 7 – when 26 Democrats aligned with 26 Republicans to elect Larry Householder.

That led to the resignation of Minority Leader Fred Strahorn, who’d led the Democratic caucus since 2014. Strahorn had voted to retain Speaker Ryan Smith, while the majority of the Democratic caucus, including Sykes, backed Householder.

Sykes says she’d been working with the caucus and both candidates for speaker during the behind-the-scenes Republican leadership battle. And she said once Strahorn stepped aside, she had no reservations in announcing she wanted the job.

“This was quite a way to welcome these new members in. I mean, I know it was very tough and very challenging, and I believe I brought some continuity from the previous leadership team,” Sykes said. “I knew that I understood what it took to lead this caucus – the work and the time commitment – and I'm willing to do it.”

Sykes said she hopes Householder, in her words, will “live up to his end of the bargain” to listen to and respect Democrats, and she plans to stay in “constant communication” with him.

Sykes leads a caucus that is half women, and she’s part of a four-member leadership team that for the first time is majority female, and includes two African American women. That’s significant, since Sykes said last year she was searched several times by Capitol Square security when other white male colleagues weren’t. An internal investigation cleared officers of bias.

“Obviously that was a very frustrating experience and one that continues in the background but nonetheless the moral of the story is women are leaders. Black women are leaders. Millennial black women are leaders,” Sykes said. And Sykes said that’s important for women and for men to see too.

But Sykes said she’s not angling for higher leadership positions – for now.

“Do I have an eight-year plan to the governor's mansion?  Absolutely not. But I also didn't have a plan on being in the legislature either, so I'll see where life takes me and I'll be open to opportunities where I can be helpful and useful,” Sykes said.

Sykes could carpool to work with her dad, who is now in the Senate, while her mother is the state director of AARP. Her sister Stancy Sherman is an Akron high school teacher. And Emilia said the family wants her nephew and niece to figure out their path to public service – whether in politics or elsewhere.

Emilia Sykes stepping down as leader of Ohio's House Democrats

House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes (D-Akron), at a press conference with House Democrats in December 2019.

The Akron native is widely considered to be planning a run for Congress.

Democrats in the Ohio House will meet soon to select a new head of their caucus, with minority leader Emilia Sykes of Akron has announced she’s stepping down after three years in that position.

35-year-old Rep. Emilia Sykes is a lawyer with a masters in public health and next year is term limited. She said in her statement that she’s not stepping away from service – “far from it”, and that she’s considering any and all options, in elected office or as a private citizen.

In an interview a year ago, Sykes described herself as a “reluctant legislator” who didn’t have a path to higher office planned out, but she added: “If there’s an opportunity that present itself and I feel like I can win, I can do a good job, I can continue to serve people effectively, then I’ll certainly look into it.”

Sykes worked to get cameras into House committee rooms , a project that had been discussed for years. Sykes has sponsored and backed bills on increasing gun regulations , dating violence and the gender pay gap . Sykes spoke out on issues involving racism, including the resolutions to declare racism a public health crisis and the racial health gap , and asked for an investigation after she said she was unfairly singled out by Statehouse security .

Sykes took over after a shakeup among House Democrats in January 2019. Then-minority leader Fred Strahorn stepped down after backing incumbent Republican Ryan Smith for speaker, while Sykes and most of the House Democratic caucus worked with and backed Larry Householder, who won. Householder was removed from leadership after being arrested in the nuclear bailout corruption scandal last year and was expelled from the House this year.

Sykes is widely considered to be preparing to run for the 13 th Congressional district. That's thought to be one of the competitive districts in the newly drawn map. Max Miller, a former aide to President Trump, is already running for the Republican nomination, after first attempting to challenge Rep, Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH 16), who voted for Trump's impeachment earlier this year. But Gonzalez announced he wouldn't seek re-election, and Miller's residence was drawn into the new 13th district.

First month in Congress sets U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes up for challenges ahead

Within weeks of being sworn in as the Akron area's new voice in Washington last month, U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes was heartbroken to learn about a Black man dying at the hands of police in Tennessee.

"This has to be figured out; I don't want to watch another video of a young man being killed," Sykes told a packed house Friday at the John S. Knight Center in a special Akron Roundtable session marking the congresswoman's first month in office.

The death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, resonates across America, she said — especially in places like Akron, where residents are still coming to terms with last June's police killing of Jayland Walker.

But viewing the police body-camera footage from Memphis is a necessity for a person in her position, she said.

"As much as I did not want to watch the video — I had to watch the video, because as an elected official I have to see exactly what is happening so that we can fix it," Sykes said. "The thought of a young man screaming for his mother a hundred yards away from his home — I mean, this should bring tears to everyone's eyes. And the fact that it doesn't is probably what scares me more than anything."

Democrat Sykes fielded a range of questions about her initial experiences on Capitol Hill and her plans for representing Ohio's 13th Congressional District in a conversation moderated by Doug Oplinger, former Akron Beacon Journal managing editor and reporter.

She said constituents are looking to her to help overhaul policing in America.

"Our interactions with law enforcement should be just like any other government official; it should be viewed as a public service, with law enforcement being there to protect and serve," Sykes stated. "We need to create a level of trust where our law enforcement feel like they are part of the community and the community feels that law enforcement is a joint venture where we are all working together."

When Oplinger pressed her on what those solutions might look like, Sykes said the first step is to acknowledge the systemic inequities and failures that allow for such acts of police violence, especially toward the Black community.

"When you look at certain communities that don't tend to have as many issues with police and community not trusting one other, those communities tend to have a lot of resources. And when you go back to the root cause of the inequities, you don't see these types of experiences (with police violence) in neighborhoods that have after-school programs ... and other basic needs being met, with people having enough food to eat or a roof over their head," Sykes said.

In November, Sykes, daughter of Ohio Sen. Vernon Sykes and former Ohio House Rep. Barbara Sykes, became the first Black candidate elected to serve the Akron area in Congress.

Prior to that, she represented the 34th District in the Ohio House of Representatives, including three years as the House Minority Leader .

She was sworn in to a U.S. House that flipped from Democratic to Republican control in the midterm election, and once again finds herself in the minority-party voting caucus. Divisions within the GOP led to a House leadership vote that took 15 roll calls to pass, causing Capitol watchers to speculate that gridlock will bog down this Congress, Sykes said she's not intimidated, however, and will seek opportunities for bipartisan cooperation.

She said the key to succeeding in office is including people and being responsive to constituents' concerns.

"People just feel like no one cares about them," Sykes said, and she wants to disrupt a system in which elected officials become comfortable in their jobs without being accessible to the voters who put them there. "My primary job is constituent services," she said.

While her long-term goal is to serve on the highly sought-after Ways and Means Committee, Sykes said she is pleased with her assignments to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Science, Space and Technology Committee.

Sykes already has delivered two short speeches on the House floor, focusing on preserving reproductive rights and protecting public lands. She said she and her staff are still getting used to their new surroundings and trying not get lost. And while the Capitol is big, the House chamber is much smaller and cozier than it appears on C-SPAN, she said.

Sykes said she's been told she doesn't look like a legislator, and she's eager to change public perceptions for young people who aspire to follow in her footsteps.

"I think it's important for people to look at me and understand that I am, in fact, a member of Congress. For a young Black woman to be elected to Congress ... that's huge — there's not many of us. There have not been that many of us.

"I just want people to look at someone who looks like me and say, 'That person's a member of Congress, and can be and should be a member of Congress.'"

Meet Emilia Sykes

emilia sykes committee and caucus assignments

Emilia’s parents taught her the values of hard work, never to give up, and that public service means standing up for others because it’s the right thing to do, not because it serves your political career. And that means picking fights on behalf of the people against the powerful. They also taught her the importance of a good education. These lessons led Emilia to graduate with high honors from Kent State University with a B.A.in Psychology and later the University of Florida, where she earned a Juris Doctor with a Certificate in Family Law and a Master of Public Health.

Emilia Sykes currently serves as a State Representative in Ohio’s 34th legislative district, otherwise known as the “birthplace of champions,” where she’s served since 2014. She recently finished four years in Democratic leadership, holding the positions of Assistant Whip, Minority Whip and Minority Leader.

As a State Representative, Emilia has worked tirelessly to keep jobs in our state and expand opportunity for working families in Northeast Ohio. She’s fought for tax cuts for middle-class and working families, funding for high-speed internet, and higher wages and safer working conditions for Ohio’s workers. During her first year as leader, despite serving in the minority, the percentage of bipartisan bills passed was nearly double each of the previous two legislative sessions.

In particular, Sykes’ work on domestic violence issues earned bipartisan praise and resulted in her legislation, Ohio HB1, to protect the safety and security of people in violent relationships to become the priority piece of legislation in the 132nd General Assembly.

Unfortunately, too many politicians in Ohio are uninterested in working together and they’re standing in the way of progress and opportunity for Northeast Ohio. We can’t have a representative in Congress who only looks out for wealthy special interests and peddles wild conspiracy theories that are meant to divide us for political gain.

Emilia is running for the United States Congress because Northeast Ohio needs a fighter who isn’t afraid to stand up for them when the powerful and well connected tell her to sit down and embrace the status quo. She’s ready to stand up for our jobs, for affordable healthcare and education, and for bipartisan cooperation to actually get things done. Emilia knows that too often working families feel alone–and they shouldn’t have to leave the state to find success, safety and security. Emilia will bring a fresh perspective to Washington, and fight for opportunity for every child, senior, and family in Northeast Ohio, regardless of their politics or beliefs.

Prior to serving in the state legislature, Sykes worked as Administrative Staff Advisor at the Summit County Fiscal Office, where she helped to create a county land bank to repurpose vacant and abandoned properties, and as a Law Clerk to the Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia.

Rep. Sykes has received numerous awards for her advocacy, including the Legislator of the Year from the Ohio Minority Business Enterprise, the Champion for Children award from Summit Children’s Services, the EMILY’s List Rising Star award, and 30 for the Future award from the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.

Congresswoman Emilia Sykes

Health care.

Congresswoman Emilia Strong Sykes believes all American families deserve access to affordable, quality health care. She is working to lower the cost of prescription drugs, expand access to Medicaid and Medicare, and combat health disparities in our communities. Congresswoman Sykes believes in the power of bipartisanship and that if both parties work together, we can substantially improve our healthcare system. A vocal proponent of public health, Congresswoman Sykes supports robust investments in critical medical research and healthcare services to improve the lives of hard-working American families. This also includes increased funding for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. As former Minority Leader of the Ohio House, Congresswoman Sykes helped create the first-ever Ohio Black Maternal Health Caucus to improve infant and maternal mortality.  Now in Congress, she continues to champion efforts to expand access to pre- and post-natal care for mothers, tackle racial bias in healthcare, and provide mothers and families with the support and resources they need to thrive. Congresswoman Sykes is a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, and a cosponsor of H.R. 959, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act , which makes critical investments in social determinants of health that influence maternal health outcomes, like housing, transportation, and nutrition. Congresswoman Sykes believes every American should have access to the care they need and have the autonomy to make their individual healthcare decisions. Healthcare is a human right.

Incumbent Emilia Sykes (D) and Kevin Coughlin (R) are running in the general election for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District

emilia sykes committee and caucus assignments

Incumbent  Emilia Sykes  (D) and  Kevin Coughlin  (R) are running in the  general election  for  Ohio’s 13th Congressional District  on November 5, 2024.

The University of Virginia’s Kyle Kondik said the district is “…one of the most competitively drawn districts in the whole country. It’s one of a relative handful of true swing seats across the country.”

Sykes was first elected in  2022 , winning 52.7% to 47.3%. Before her election, she served in the  Ohio House of Representatives  from 2015 to 2023 and was minority leader from 2019 to 2021. Sykes is running on her record in Congress, which she says has benefited the district.  The New York Times’s Robert Jimison wrote: “At stop after stop, Ms. Sykes highlighted her role in helping to secure nearly $15 million in federal funding for projects in the district through earmarks… and laid out plans to seek more federal dollars during this year’s appropriations process.” Sykes is campaigning on her constituent services which she said “…is the best incumbent protection plan that exists, because this is my job performance.”

In his responses to  Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection , Coughlin said, “I’m a small business owner and former State Senator running to put responsible leadership to work for you in the United States Congress.” Coughlin said he is running because “I feel like I’m more in line with the views and the concerns of the 13th congressional district than the person that there’s that is there now, and I have a record that shows that I will be able to do something about it,” The  National Republican Congressional Committee  has listed Coughlin as one of 26 candidates the group is supporting as part of its Young Guns program for candidates in competitive districts.

Both candidates face criticisms over who’s more in touch with the district. Former Ohio Republican Party chair Robert Paduchik wrote that Sykes “aligns closely with the most radical elements of the Washington Democrats and has increasingly embraced extreme positions that do not resonate with the commonsense voters of the district.” Democrats have criticized Coughlin over issues such as  Social Security  and abortion, saying he’s out of touch with the district’s voters.  Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee  chair  Suzan DelBene  (D) said that Coughlin “…spent his career as a lobbyist and self-serving politician, supporting efforts to ban abortion, gut Social Security and Medicare, and repeal the Affordable Care Act. His out-of-touch agenda would threaten the fundamental freedoms Ohioans have fought hard to protect.”

As of the most recent fundraising reports, Sykes had raised $3.4 million and spent $1.1 million, and Coughlin had raised $864,682 and spent $475,464. To read more about campaign finance reports,  click here .

All 435  U.S. House  seats are up for election in 2024. Republicans have a 220 to 212 majority with three vacancies. As of June 2024, 45 members of the U.S. House had announced they were  not running for re-election . To read more about the U.S. House elections taking place this year,  click here .

In the  2022 election  in this district, the Democratic candidate won 52.7%-47.3%.  Daily Kos  calculated what the results of the  2020 presidential election  in this district would have been following  redistricting .  Joe Biden  (D) would have defeated  Donald Trump  (R) 50.7%-47.9%.

Ohio’s 13th is one of 37 congressional districts with a Democratic incumbent or an  open seat  that the  National Republican Congressional Committee  (NRCC) is targeting in 2024. To read about NRCC targeting initiatives,  click here . For a complete list of NRCC targeted districts,  click here .

Emilia Sykes in the 13th Congressional District: endorsement editorial

No one can doubt that state Rep. Emilia Sykes is unafraid to roll the political dice. As a minority within a minority within a minority within a minority -- an urban Black female Democrat in an Ohio House that is mostly rural, white, male and Republican -- Sykes has made the majority sit up and pay attention. In 2018, the Akron native demanded Statehouse security bias training after she and other Black women lawmakers and staff were followed and questioned despite their security badges.

The next year, she cut a daring deal with GOP House Speaker candidate Larry Householder (one perhaps later regretted, given Householder’s subsequent federal indictment on alleged bribery conspiracy charges). Householder pledged to give Democrats more say and improved committee assignments in exchange for their votes -- and became speaker with equal Democratic and Republican votes .

Sykes, 36, the former Ohio House minority leader, is term-limited after serving eight years, and has set her sights on Congress in a closely contested U.S. House district that tilts slightly Democratic. Ohio’s revamped 13th District, as redrawn for this election, includes Summit County, northern Stark County and a slice of Portage County.

The race pits Sykes against a Donald-Trump-endorsed Republican, Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, 30, of North Canton, making her first run for office. Gesiotto Gilbert, who declined to participate in The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com endorsement process, “ owns and operates the Seven Hills Golf Club in Hartville with her husband, former NFL offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert ,” cleveland.com’s Sabrina Eaton reports.

Both candidates are lawyers who grew up in the region. But the race offers voters a stark contrast on a seminal electoral issue: Was the 2020 election stolen? Sykes says no and vowed in the endorsement interview to oppose “election deniers and folks who, quite frankly, don’t want America to continue on as we have enjoyed it for the last couple of hundred years.” Gesiotto Gilbert, when Eaton asked whether the 2020 election was above board, failed to answer the question, diverting to a critique of President Joe Biden.

Voters in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District should send Emilia Sykes to Congress. Early voting in the Nov. 8 election has begun.

Editor’s note: This endorsement editorial was corrected at 10:09 a.m. to remove an erroneous reference to who led the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus in 2018. Stephanie Howse was president of the caucus at that time.

On Oct. 26, as part of its endorsement process, the editorial board of The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com held an endorsement interview for the redistricted 13th Congressional District of Ohio, which covers all of Summit County, the northern part of Stark County and a slice of Portage County, and which is considered one of the most competitive of the revamped congressional districts in Ohio. Democrat Emilia Sykes participated in the endorsement interview; Republican Madison Gesiotto Gilbert declined. Listen to audio of this endorsement interview below:

Sykes Votes to Allow Noncitizens the Right to Vote

May 24, 2024

emilia sykes committee and caucus assignments

An overwhelming bipartisan majority in the House just passed legislation  overturning a progressive immigration policy  that grants  noncitizens  the right to vote in local elections in the nation’s capital.

Over  FIFTY Democrats  joined Republicans to back this commonsense legislation, but vulnerable Democrat Emilia Sykes voted  AGAINST  it.

And remember, Sykes has a history of fighting for extreme, far-left immigration policies:

  • Sykes has  repeatedly backed  Joe Biden’s toxic  open-borders agenda , despite an  illegal immigrant crime wave  sweeping  the  country .
  • She  refused  to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable for his border security failures.
  • And she  voted against securing the border  when she had the chance.

“Preventing noncitizens from voting in American elections is as basic and commonsense as it gets, which is why it passed with a clear bipartisan majority in the House, yet Emilia Sykes was too extreme to support it,” said CLF Regional Press Secretary Maureen O’Toole. “Today’s vote makes it clear: Emilia Sykes’ top priority is pushing radical illegal immigration policy, not fighting for Ohio citizens or protecting the security of our elections.”

Bipartisan Women's Caucus Welcomes New Leadership For 118th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues Co-Chairs, Representatives Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR) and Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and Vice-Chairs Kat Cammack (R-FL) and Lucy McBath (D-GA), announced the next group of women taking on the Caucus' leadership for the 118th Congress.

Congresswoman Kat Cammack will step up as Republican Co-Chair and Congresswoman Susie Lee (D-NV) as her Democrat counterpart. Newly-elected representatives Monica De La Cruz (R-TX) and Emilia Strong Sykes (D-OH) will serve as Vice-Chairs.

"Over the last two years, the Women's Caucus has played an instrumental role in uniting women lawmakers on both sides of the aisle around key issues including infant and maternal health, early childhood education, support for women veterans, and beyond. Through briefings, events, and off-site visits, we've demonstrated the power of working together to shape policies with real impact. I’m grateful to outgoing Reps. Madeleine Dean and Jenniffer González-Colón for their leadership and look forward to joining our new Democratic Co-Chair Rep. Susie Lee and co-vice chairs Reps. Monica De La Cruz and Emilia Strong Sykes during the 118th Congress," said incoming Co-Chair Rep. Kat Cammack.

"I am honored to serve as Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Women's Caucus, at a time when more women are serving in Congress than ever before – a record we have broken in each of my three terms in this body," said incoming Co-Chair Rep. Susie Lee. "This caucus is a network of support and of unity. As women in Congress, there is so much more that unites us than divides us, and I greatly look forward to working across the aisle for the good of the American people."

"Women's rights are bipartisan. That is why I am honored to serve as Vice Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Women’s Caucus. The caucus is at the forefront of generation-defining legislation, whether it’s the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 which prohibited discrimination based on pregnancy status, or the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, which provides job protection for people who must take leave to care for family or themselves due to a medical issue. Our work continues today in an effort to make the world fair for the next generation of women. We have a lot of work to do, and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves," said incoming Vice-Chair Rep. De La Cruz.

"It is an honor to serve as a Vice Chair of this esteemed caucus that has already done significant work to advance equitable policies to empower and uplift women. As a legislator with a track record of working across the aisle, I look forward to continuing this work with all my colleagues to advance the needs of women in Ohio's 13th Congressional District and across the nation, including accessing affordable healthcare, securing good-paying jobs, reducing infant and maternal mortality, and acquiring quality childcare. Together, we can ensure that all women have the resources and the support they need to succeed," said incoming Vice-Chair Rep. Sykes.

"As the first woman elected to represent Puerto Rico in Congress in its history, it has been a tremendous honor to be part of the leadership of this Caucus and work towards advancing equitable policies to help ease burdens and help women succeed in all capacities. From ensuring healthcare and mental health access to diversifying the workforce to honoring the pioneers in paving the way for future generations. As a Caucus and as individuals, we have pushed our agendas toward our main goal of helping construct a solid, more equal future for women. I'm proud to pass the baton to an extraordinary group of esteemed colleagues. I will remain a proud member and collaborator of this Bipartisan Caucus as it continues doing impactful work," said outgoing Co-Chair Rep. Jenniffer González-Colón.

"Serving as the vice co-chair and co-chair of the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus was an inspiring way to enter Congress — I'm grateful for the opportunities we had to reach across the aisle on issues that affect all women," said outgoing Co-Chair Rep. Madeleine Dean. "Our shared efforts and work for women veterans, women’s maternal health, and women in STEM have stood out to me. I am confident that under the leadership of Reps. Susie Lee, Kat Cammack, Emilia Sykes, and Monica De La Cruz, the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus will continue to be a space for conversation, community, and a shared commitment to advancing policies for all women."

In the past two years, the Bipartisan Caucus, in collaboration with the Women's Congressional Policy Institute (WCPI) and other stakeholders, has successfully promoted initiatives to advance policy priorities and tackle the most pressing issues affecting women across the United States and abroad.

The Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues (Bipartisan Women’s Caucus) is a 43-years old Congressional Member Organization whose membership includes all Republican and Democrat women Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Chairman Aguilar: House Democrats are focused on the most pressing challenges that working families face

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu were joined by Representatives Andrea Salinas (OR-06) and Emilia Sykes (OH-13) at a press conference highlighting the need to turn the page from the chaos of Extreme MAGA Republicans and focus on the needs of everyday Americans.

CHAIRMAN AGUILAR: Good morning. I'm so pleased to be joined by the Vice Chair and some of our colleagues in the Democratic Caucus this morning.

This morning, House Democrats were again— last week, I should say. House Democrats were again the adults in the room when it came to turning the page on another MAGA sideshow. I said, “sideshow,” by the way, just so we know.

We want to govern, and we want to make life better for Americans. It's imperative that we do that and it's imperative that we move forward from the reckless agenda that Marjorie Taylor Greene continues to advance. It's time to put People Over Politics and to focus on the most pressing challenges that working families face in this country.

The Vice Chair and I are pleased to be joined by two members of our Caucus, Representative Andrea Salinas from Oregon and Emilia Sykes from Ohio, who were elected by their constituents to put People Over Politics and to deliver real results for their communities. Our legislative accomplishments have laid the foundation for a strong economic recovery, and these members will tell you that there is much more we can do to lower costs, grow the middle class and defend freedom.

We continue to partner with the Administration, which launched Infrastructure Week by highlighting our Invest In America agenda, creating more than 15 million good-paying jobs, bringing back domestic manufacturing from overseas and strengthening supply chains. That's going to be the focus of the remainder of our Congress, working across the aisle whenever we can, wherever we can, to raise the quality of life for working families. And that means building safer communities, as we also honor our brave law enforcement officers this week here in the nation's capital.

Next, I’ll turn it over to the Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, Ted Lieu.

VICE CHAIR LIEU: Thank you, Chairman Aguilar.

As Chairman Aguilar noted, we celebrate two weeks this week. We've got National Police Week as well as Infrastructure Week. In terms of Police Week, I honor all those who choose a profession where they could be called upon to risk their lives. Having served on active duty in the U.S. military, I respect all those who wear a uniform and choose to protect and serve, including our police officers and all those in law enforcement.

And then in terms of Infrastructure Week, let me start off by saying that we've got a good economic report today showing that inflation has cooled slightly. It went downwards in April. At the same time, prices are too high. And that's why when Democrats were in control, we passed laws such as the Infrastructure Law that's going to help ease supply chain shortages. It’s going to make transporting goods easier and faster and more efficient— that's going to help reduce prices.

We also passed the CHIPS and Science Act, which is going to bring back high-tech chip manufacturing to the United States. Chips are in lots of consumer products. That's going to help reduce prices.

The Biden Administration has been working on reducing junk fees. We also passed a law, when Democrats were in control, to reduce medical costs. And so, Democrats are focused on lowering prices and lowering costs.

And with that, it is my great honor to introduce the amazing freshman representative from Oregon, Representative Salinas.

REP. SALINAS: Good morning and thank you, Chairman Aguilar, Vice Chair Lieu and all my colleagues here today for hosting this press conference on our continued fight to put People Over Politics.

Some of you might know this, but before I got elected, I actually served as a staff for several members of Congress, including former Congresswoman Darlene Hooley from the Willamette Valley of Oregon. She represented parts of my current district. And I mention this because even just a few years ago, there was still that feeling that we could work together across the aisle to actually get things done. Bipartisanship didn't seem to feel as difficult as it does today. But now as a Member of myself, it's hard to reconcile what we're seeing from the other side of the aisle. Extremists like Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene have a chokehold on today's Republican Party, and their only goal is to wreak havoc on democracy and take away some of our most fundamental rights.

Meanwhile, my Democratic colleagues and I stand here today as a united front. We stand together in our efforts to push back against extremism and to protect democracy and the rule of law. And we fight any and all attempts to take away your rights as Americans, including the right to choose whether and when to start or grow a family. Extreme Republicans have made clear that they won't stop until abortion is banned nationwide, including in my home state of Oregon, where we have some of the greatest protections. They want to make IVF, contraception and other life saving medical procedures illegal, and criminalize women who seek care and the doctors who provide it.

But it's just not women that they're targeting. We've seen attempts to make drastic cuts to SNAP and take food out of the mouths of my veterans, seniors and hungry children. And they want to send us backwards in the fight against climate change, doing away with climate-smart investments from the inflation Reduction Act that are incredibly popular to the farmers in my district, and will help them stay resilient and profitable in the long term.

Extreme politics have become the norm in Congress, but they don't have to be. Oregonians sent me here to get things done, and I continue to do just that, focusing on sensible bipartisan policies. And I'll continue to urge my Republican colleagues to meet me in the middle and help pass a truly bipartisan Farm Bill that levels the playing field for families and rural communities. And I will keep working across the aisle whenever possible. Despite all the noise, there are still sensible Republicans in Congress who want to make progress for their constituents.

I am always ready to put People Over Politics and forge solutions together. With that, I'll pass it over to my friend and colleague from Ohio, Congresswoman Emilia Sykes.

REP. SYKES: Good morning, everyone. Good to see you. My name is Emilia Sykes, and I am honored to serve Ohio's 13th Congressional District as a Member of Congress.

As a first time Member of Congress, I was ready and excited to get to work on the real issues that my constituents care about: lowering costs, improving public safety, expanding opportunity and protecting our fundamental freedoms. Unfortunately, extreme politicians and Republicans have focused more on political games and antics, political infighting, like last week's motion to vacate, and that's taken the priority over governing.

These political games distract from the real issues that our constituents face every single day. It's truly shameful. The American people deserve so much better. But I won't let the chaos of the House Majority distract me from the reason that I'm here, and it's the people of Ohio's 13th district. My constituents sent me to Congress to focus on the challenges they face like the high cost of living, so that's exactly what I'm going to do and will continue to do. It's why I introduced the common sense legislation, the Lower Your Taxes Act, which would enhance the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, all while ensuring greedy corporations pay their fair share. By expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, we're investing in working people and putting more money in the pockets of people, their hard earned money, at a time when families need a little bit more breathing room.

My constituents want and need real solutions like the Lower Your Taxes Act, something that will improve their everyday lives, not more divisive rhetoric. In a recent radio interview, I was asked whether or not the Lower Your Taxes Act had a realistic chance of passing. And it was disappointing that I couldn't share a resounding, “yes.” Because this is a good idea that each of these provisions of the deal would help ease the pain of inflation, that it would lift families out of poverty and provide needed tax relief all while ensuring greedy corporations are paying their fair share. But the reason this bill is not going to get a fair hearing is because Republicans want to play games, partisan games, rather than address the needs and concerns of the American people.

I know that bipartisanship can be accomplished. I served as a Minority Leader in the State House in a superminority and we were able to get things done, real things done, including expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit. And it could be accomplished here in Congress, but my colleagues have to make the decision. It is their desire or will to not, or to, put People Over Politics. They can join me and my Democratic colleagues in leading and putting People Over Politics, and we invite them every single day to join on the bandwagon in order to help the American people. So, to my colleagues in the Majority, we say enough is enough. Let's stop playing games, and let's get to work.

Thank you and I turn the program back over to Chair Aguilar.
