Two Red Sox trade deadline acquisitions to begin rehab assignments
Mike Masala
There may only be 12 games left in the Boston Red Sox' s 2024 regular season, but that doesn't mean everyone has given up trying to capitalize on this time.
Ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed relievers Luis Garcia and Lucas Sims are beginning rehab assignments with Triple-A Worcester.
Boston acquired Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline for a package of prospects, including Matthew Lugo, Niko Kavadas, Ryan Zeferjahn and Yeferson Vargas. The 37-year-old appeared in 11 games for the Red Sox, posting a 10.32 ERA and a 1.941 WHIP before landing on the injured list back in August with elbow inflammation.
Sims was also acquired at the deadline in a deal with the Cincinnati Reds for 19-year-old pitching prospect Ovis Portes. The 30-year-old Sims posted an 8.10 ERA and a 1.600 WHIP in his 11 outings for Boston before landing on the injured list with a lat strain last month.
Both players are set to hit free agency this offseason, and the Red Sox are nearly eliminated from postseason contention, so it's a bit confusing why the duo is trying to come back.
Are they trying to earn a job in Boston's bullpen next year?

Marlins Designate Jonathan Bermudez For Assignment
By Steve Adams | September 12, 2024 at 2:37pm CDT
The Marlins announced a series of roster moves today, most notably designating lefty Jonathan Bermudez for assignment in order to clear roster space for righty Jeff Lindgren , whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Jacksonville. Miami also placed righty John McMillon on the 15-day injured list due to tightness in his right elbow. McMillon’s roster spot will be filled by righty Michael Petersen , whom the Fish claimed from the Dodgers earlier this week and who’ll now jump right onto the big league roster.
As Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald points out ( on X ), once either Lindgren or Petersen take the mound for the Marlins, the team will set a new major league record for most players used in a single season. They’re currently tied with the 2019 Mariners at 69 players. It’d be somewhat poetic if Petersen gets the distinction, as Miami announced he’ll wear No. 70 with the club.
Bermudez, 28, joined the Marlins on a minor league deal in April 2023. The former Astros draftee had been released by the Giants prior to that deal. He’s pitched 6 2/3 innings this season, his first career action at the MLB level, and allowed six runs on 11 hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts. He’s had a rough showing in Jacksonville, too, logging a 6.46 ERA in 24 2/3 frames.
Bermudez has worked more in the bullpen this season than in years past. He spent the 2023 campaign in the Double-A rotation for the Marlins, where he made 18 starts and posted a 4.58 ERA in 94 1/3 innings. Bermudez punched out 26.6% of his opponents there against a 9.5% walk rate. The former 23rd-round pick (2018) briefly snuck onto the back end of Baseball America’s top-30 Astros prospects back in 2022, but he’s taken some steps back since that point.
Lindgren, 27, pitched seven innings for the Marlins last year in his MLB debut but was eventually removed from the 40-man roster. He’s been hit hard in the upper minors this year, combining for 75 2/3 innings of 6.19 ERA ball between Double-A and Triple-A.
Since he’s been working out of the Jacksonville rotation, he’s stretched out for multiple innings of relief if needed. The Marlins’ pitching staff is in shambles following injuries to Jesus Luzardo , Eury Perez , Braxton Garrett , Max Meyer , Ryan Weathers , Calvin Faucher and Andrew Nardi , among others (plus trades of Trevor Rogers , Tanner Scott , A.J. Puk , Bryan Hoeing , JT Chargois and Huascar Brazoban ). Lindgren can fill any role necessary down the stretch but will likely be removed from the 40-man once again at some point.
What’s next for this lad? Maybe a little vaycay to decompress? Where to? The West Indies? Bahamas, Cancun? Tahiti? Decisions.
Who would want to manage this team next year who has a proven record? No one. Only someone for their first ML Job. or someone who gets five years of guaranteed money!
@UWP 2025 Marlins will have a very good rotation and Bendix will have a Front Office he can trust. The Marlins are unlikely to contend next year, but could be very competitive.
Schumaker may well have decided he might like to manage this team next year. He is regularly saying nice things about the Front Office. Luis Urueta, Jon Jay and maybe Rod Barajas would be interested in taking the job on. From the Front Office Gabe Kapler or Rachel Balkovec might be interested
Thank You for your thoughtful answer!

Phillies reinstate Bohm from injured list, designate Garcia for Assignment
Prior to today’s game against the New York Mets, the Phillies returned infielder Alec Bohm from his rehab assignment with triple-A Lehigh Valley and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list. To make room for Bohm on the 28-man roster, catcher Aramis Garcia was designated for assignment.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
The 28-year-old Bohm was named an All-Star for the first time in his career after winning phase two of fan voting and being elected the National League’s starting third baseman. He leads the NL with 44 doubles this season, one shy of Scott Rolen’s franchise record of 45 by a third baseman in 1998. Slashing .290/.343/.462 (.805 OPS) in 131 games for the Phillies this year, Bohm went 2-for-4 with a double in his lone rehab appearance with the IronPigs at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre yesterday. The Omaha, Neb., native was selected by the Phillies in the first round (3 rd overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft.
Garcia , 31, played in three games for the Phillies after having his contract selected by the club on Sept. 7. Originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, he was signed by Philadelphia as a minor league free agent on Feb. 14, 2023.

WASHINGTON , Aug. 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of NASA's SpaceX Crew-10 mission, four crew members are preparing to launch for a long-duration stay aboard the International Space Station.
NASA astronauts Commander Anne McClain and Pilot Nichole Ayers , JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Mission Specialist Takuya Onishi , and Roscosmos cosmonaut Mission Specialist Kirill Peskov will join astronauts at the orbiting laboratory no earlier than February 2025 .
The flight is the 10th crew rotation with SpaceX to the station as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program. While aboard, the international crew will conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to help prepare humans for future missions and benefit people on Earth.
Selected by NASA as an astronaut in 2013, this will be McClain's second spaceflight. A colonel in the U.S. Army, she earned her bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York , and holds master's degrees in Aerospace Engineering, International Security, and Strategic Studies. The Spokane, Washington , native was an instructor pilot in the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland . McClain has more than 2,300 flight hours in 24 rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, including more than 800 in combat, and was a member of the U.S. Women's National Rugby Team. On her first spaceflight, McClain spent 204 days as a flight engineer during Expeditions 58 and 59 and was the lead on two spacewalks, totaling 13 hours and 8 minutes. Since then, she has served in various roles, including branch chief and space station assistant to the chief of NASA's Astronaut Office.
Ayers is a major in the U.S. Air Force and the first member of NASA's 2021 astronaut class named to a crew. The Colorado native graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a minor in Russian, where she was a member of the academy's varsity volleyball team. She later earned a master's in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Rice University in Houston . Ayers served as an instructor pilot and mission commander in the T-38 ADAIR and F-22 Raptor, leading multinational and multiservice missions worldwide. She has more than 1,400 total flight hours, including more than 200 in combat.
With 113 days in space, this mission also will mark Onishi's second trip to the space station. After being selected by JAXA in 2009, he flew as a flight engineer for Expeditions 48 and 49 became the first Japanese astronaut to robotically capture the Cygnus spacecraft. He also constructed a new experimental environment aboard Kibo, the station's Japanese experiment module. Since his spaceflight, Onishi became certified as a JAXA flight director, leading the team responsible for operating Kibo from JAXA Mission Control in Tsukuba , Japan . He holds a bachelor's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Tokyo and was a pilot for All Nippon Airways, flying more than 3,700 flight hours in the Boeing 767.
NASA's SpaceX Crew-10 mission also will be Peskov's first spaceflight. Before his selection as a cosmonaut in 2018, he earned a degree in Engineering from the Ulyanovsk Civil Aviation School and was a co-pilot on the Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft for airlines Nordwind and Ikar. Assigned as a test-cosmonaut in 2020, he has additional experience in skydiving, zero-gravity training, scuba diving, and wilderness survival.
For more than two decades, people have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station , advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. The station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight and to expand commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit. As commercial companies focus on providing human space transportation services and destinations as part of a robust low Earth orbit economy , NASA's Artemis campaign is underway at the Moon, where the agency is preparing for future human exploration of Mars.

10 Tips for Writing Assignments
Writing assignments are a cornerstone of your academic journey, and honing your assignment writing skills is paramount for your success. Whether you're embarking on your first year or a seasoned academic, the art of effective assignment writing can wield significant influence over your grades and overall educational voyage. In this comprehensive guide, we'll offer you ten invaluable tips to elevate your assignment writing prowess. These strategies, along with expert guidance from our specialized assignment help website writemyessays.com/do-my-assignment.html , will empower you to enhance your writing skills and chart a course towards academic triumph.
Tip 1: Start Early
The first rule of successful assignment writing is to start early. Procrastination is the enemy of quality work. By initiating your assignments as soon as you receive them, you'll have ample time for essential steps such as research, planning, drafting, and revisions. Starting early allows you to manage your time effectively and produce well-crafted assignments.
Tip 2: Understand the Assignment
Before you begin writing, it's essential to thoroughly understand the assignment instructions. Take the time to read and analyze what is expected of you. If any aspects are unclear, don't hesitate to seek clarification from your instructor. Understanding the assignment's requirements is fundamental to meeting them successfully.
Tip 3: Plan Your Work
Effective planning is a cornerstone of assignment writing. Develop a structured plan that includes creating a timeline for your assignment. Break down the work into smaller tasks, allocate sufficient time for research, outlining, drafting, and proofreading. A well-organized plan will keep you on track and reduce stress.
Tip 4: Utilize Campus Resources
Your university offers a wealth of resources to support your writing endeavors. Take advantage of writing centers, libraries, and academic advisors who can provide guidance and feedback on your assignments. These resources are valuable assets that can significantly improve the quality of your work.
Tip 5: Research Thoroughly
High-quality assignments require thorough research. Dive deeply into your chosen topic, utilizing a variety of credible sources such as academic journals, books, and reputable websites. Ensure that you cite your sources correctly to provide evidence for your arguments and maintain academic integrity.
Tip 6: Maintain a Good Writing Style
Developing and maintaining a clear and concise writing style is essential for effective communication in your assignments. Avoid overly complex language and prioritize clarity. Ensure that your assignments have a logical structure with a clear flow of ideas. Your goal is to make your writing accessible and easy for your reader to understand.
Tip 7: Seek Writing Assistance
If you ever find yourself struggling with assignment writing, don't hesitate to seek writing assistance. Many universities offer writing assistance programs staffed by experienced tutors who can provide guidance and feedback on your work. These services are designed to help you refine your writing skills and produce higher-quality assignments.
Tip 8: Proofread and Edit
The importance of proofreading and editing cannot be overstated. After completing your initial draft, take the time to review and edit your work. Check for grammar and punctuation errors, ensure proper formatting, and verify that your assignment aligns with the assignment guidelines. Effective editing will polish your work and enhance its overall quality.
Tip 9: Stay Safe Online
When conducting online research for your assignments, it's essential to prioritize online safety. Use reliable sources and be cautious of plagiarism. Properly cite all your references to maintain academic integrity and avoid unintentional academic misconduct.
Tip 10: Celebrate Your Achievements
Lastly, don't forget to celebrate your achievements in assignment writing. Completing assignments is a significant accomplishment on your academic journey. Reward yourself for your hard work and dedication, and acknowledge your successes. Recognizing your achievements can motivate you to excel in future assignments.

Officiating crews for the 2024 season
The list of the 17 crews for the 2024 NFL season.
Football Zebras exclusive
Football Zebras has obtained the officiating crew rosters for the 2024 NFL season. This season, there are 6 new officials to replace the 6 that left the field at the end of last season. Just as last season, there is an umpire and a line of scrimmage official designated as swing officials who will move between crews through the season.
There are three women on the field with the hiring of field judge Karina Tovar and the departure of line judge Maia Chaka . There are also six women working as replay officials or replay assistants.
Derek Anderson, who just finished his stint as a Big 12 referee, will be a line judge in the NFL, just as his father Walt was from 1996 to 2002 before being promoted to referee (and with the same number). Walt Anderson was most recently the head of the officiating department, but was reassigned to allow his son to be hired and as part of a larger departmental reorganization .
There are two open replay assistant positions that have not yet been filled.

Let Walt Anderson’s son become a ref and his Name is Derek Anderson so does that mean he will be for any teams Derek Anderson the QB played for. Plus Walt Anderson was a Very Corrupt Official. Just ask my older brother. Can we please have Hussey Change his name to something less Slutish. Is that the same Grantis Bell who was a Star in my 4th and inches Leagues. Sarah Thomas is getting a bad reputation by being on the crew headed by the clueless Brad Allen. Allen thinks he’s superior to other officials because he came straight into the NFL as a referee, which never, ever should have happened. He didn’t pay his dues like others and he has an arrogance about him.

My final exam is worth:
I want (at least) this in the class:
Enter Class Grades
Calculator Instructions
- In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth and the grade that you would like to get in the class. For example, your final test might be worth 20% of your overall grade and you want to get at least a 93% in the class. You would enter these numbers into the form.
- In the bottom half of the form, enter a description (optional) of the classwork, the grade received for that classwork, and the weight of the classwork. Most class grades are made up of several components such as homework assignments, tests, exams, quizzes, class participation, attendance, etc. For example, a class exam might be worth 10% of your grade and you received a 95% on the test. You would enter those values into the form.
- If you need more than four rows, press the "Add Row" button to add an additional line. You can add as many rows as you need.
- Once you have finished entering your grades, press the "Calculate" button and the grade you need on the final exam will be displayed.
Final Grade Formula
final grade = ((g wanted x w total ) - gw) / w final
w total = w 1 + w 2 + w 3 + ... + w final
w 1 = weight of assignment #1
w final = weight of final exam
gw = g 1 x w 1 + g 2 x w 2 + g 3 x w 3 + ...
g 1 = grade for assignment #1
g wanted = grade wanted in the class
Example Calculation
Let's say your class has the following grading plan.
Assignments | Weight |
---|---|
Project #1 | 10% |
Project #2 | 10% |
Quiz #1 | 20% |
Quiz #2 | 20% |
Mid-Term Test | 20% |
Final Exam | 20% |
Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.
Assignments | Grade Received |
---|---|
Project #1 | 91% |
Project #2 | 85% |
Quiz #1 | 75% |
Quiz #2 | 95% |
Mid-Term Test | 97% |
Final Exam | Not Yet Taken |
Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.
First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:
w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%
Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.
gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%
Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:
final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%
This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!
What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?
Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.
Assignments | Possible Points |
---|---|
Project | 100 |
Homework #1 | 100 |
Homework #2 | 150 |
Quiz | 200 |
Mid-Term Test | 200 |
Final Exam | 250 |
Let's assume you received the following grades.
Assignments | Points Earned |
---|---|
Project | 91 out 100 |
Homework #1 | 85 out of 100 |
Homework #2 | 120 out of 150 |
Quiz | 180 out of 200 |
Mid-Term Test | 190 out of 200 |
Final Exam | Not Yet Taken |
To enter these grades in the calculator above, you first need to calculate your grade percentage for each assignment using the following formula:
grade percentage = points earned / possible points x 100
So taking your mid-term test grade as an example, we get the following:
mid-term test = 190 points earned / 200 possible points x 100 = 95%
In the weight column of the calculator, you would enter the possible points for each assignment.
Assuming you wanted to get at least a 90% in the class and your final exam is worth 250 points (i.e.the weight), you would enter the following information into the calculator.
Classwork | Grade | Weight |
---|---|---|
Project | 91% | 100 |
Homework #1 | 85% | 100 |
Homework #2 | 80% | 150 |
Quiz | 90% | 200 |
Mid-Term Test | 95% | 200 |
In this example, you would need to get a 93.6% on your final in order to get a 90% in the class.

California county official stripped of committee assignments amid COVID fraud allegations
by RAY LEWIS | The National Desk
SANTA ANA, Calif. (TND) — A California county official was removed from his committee assignments Tuesday amid allegations he helped embezzle millions in pandemic relief funds.
The Orange County, California Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to remove Supervisor Andrew Do, R-1st District, from his assignments. The board said it couldn’t dismiss Do altogether, but the council agreed with an agenda item to strip him of his appointments to multiple panels.
Fox 11 Los Angeles reported the committees included the National Association of Counties, the Orange County Emergency Management Council and the Orange County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, among others.
“We can’t remove, but this item before us now, Item Number One, to remove him from these kinds of commissions and boards is a critical step in making sure that we show transparency, we do this before the public, so it’s important that we do this together and as a unified board,” Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, D-2nd District, the resolution's sponsor, said.
Supervisor Katrina Foley, D-5th District, accused Do of stealing public funds. She and Sarmiento said they supported censuring Do, claiming he will not resign.
Unfortunately, we’re having to do this because he will not resign. And, we hope that he will resign, because he should not continue to be publicly enriched off of the taxpayers when he: one, isn’t doing his job, and two, is embroiled in a terrible corruption scandal,” Foley said.
Do is accused of directing millions of dollars through his district discretionary fund to the Viet American Society, an organization that employed his daughter, according to The Orange County Register . The Viet American Society was reportedly designed to help distribute meals to seniors and residents with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the organization allegedly instead used much of the funds to buy personal property.
Sarmiento suggested the board approach the subject of Do's involvement with the council “deliberately” since it understands what he and his office are facing.
“We know that the residents in District One don’t have a representative that’s as available as he should be. And so, I feel for those residents,” Sarmiento said. “I want to make sure that they understand that the board is still going to be representing, carrying out the business of the public and of the people."
Do did not return The National Desk’s request for comment prior to publication.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Party with Star-Studded Group Celebrating Tyler Perry's Birthday
The birthday bash was reportedly also attended by Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King and Alicia Keys

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their friend Tyler Perry on the eve of the Duke of Sussex's milestone 40th birthday.
On Sept. 14, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen leaving a birthday bash for Perry, as seen in pictures obtained by the Daily Mail . The filmmaker turned 55 on Sept. 13, the day prior.
The photos showed Prince Harry and Meghan sitting together in the backseat of a car, where Meghan laughed and Harry held up a phone. According to the outlet, the celebration was also attended by Oprah Winfrey , Gayle King , Alicia Keys , actor Aaron O'Connell, Paramount and Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins and his fashion designer wife Tracy Robbins. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are friendly with the couple and marked their sixth wedding anniversary in May with a double date dinner .
The Daily Mail reported that an employee from a lighting company apparently hired to help decorate for the party said he observed "a lot of music, dancing and singing" as he left. The outlet reported that the event was held at a Montecito home.

"Lots of speeches and food too. Everyone was having a lot of fun. It was a good party," the staffer said about what he saw. "There were a lot of famous people, but I cannot say any more."
The celebration was held the day before Prince Harry turned 40 on Sept. 15. PEOPLE understands that Harry planned to mark the occasion with a private celebration in Montecito, surrounded by friends and family.
Prince Harry and Meghan, 43, are known to be close with the multi-hyphenate entertainer, and Perry is the godfather of their daughter, Princess Lilibet , 3.
The couple first connected with Perry when he reached out to Meghan around the time of her royal wedding to Harry in 2018. The Madea creator let the Duchess of Sussex know he was praying for her "and that he understood what this meant, and that he could only imagine what it was like," she told The Cut in 2022. Perry told her that he was always available for support or advice, and she later took him up on that invitation.
"Sometimes, you can tell your life story to a stranger on a plane as opposed to some of the people that are closest to you," the Duchess of Sussex said, referencing her rapport with Perry.
In 2020, she filled him in on her family's stay in Vancouver, Canada amid an uncertain future as she and Prince Harry announced their decision to step back from their duties as working royals. Before the actor-director had even met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, he offered his Los Angeles home as a place for them to stay with their son, Prince Archie , now 5, along with a security detail while transitioning out of their royal roles.
As Harry and Meghan put down roots with a "permanent home" in Montecito later that summer, a source told PEOPLE that they were truly appreciative of Perry's compassion.
"They're really grateful to Tyler Perry for his kindness," the insider said in summer 2020. "They have endless gratitude to him for helping them during a complicated time."
"With COVID and as they were stepping back from their royal duties, he provided them a safe haven," they added.

Perry even welcomed them to their new abode with a grand piano as a housewarming gift, telling them, "Write the soundtrack for your life," according to The Cut . He appeared in the docuseries Harry & Meghan , which debuted on Netflix in December 2022, where he shared the story of how the Sussexes asked him to be Lilibet's godfather.
During an interview with the six-part series, Perry said that Harry and Meghan got "pretty serious" on a phone call. "I go, 'Okay, what's going on?' They said, 'Well, we'd like for you to be Lili's godfather.' I go, 'Whoa.' I had to take a minute to take that in. And I thought, 'I'd be honored. I'd absolutely be honored,' " Perry remembered.
After hopping off the phone, the director realized his agreement came with a bit of a condition.
"I called them back and go, 'Uh, hold on a second — does this mean we gotta go over [to the U.K.] and do all of that in church with [the royal family] and figure all that out? 'Cause I don't wanna do that,' " Perry said in the series. " 'Maybe we can do a little private ceremony here [in the U.S.] and let that be that, and if you have to do it there, then that's okay.' "

Princess Lilibet was christened in a small ceremony at Prince Harry and Meghan's Montecito home in March 2023. Perry flew in for the christening ceremony from his home in Atlanta with a 10-person gospel choir that sang "Oh Happy Day" and "This Little Light of Mine," a song that played at Meghan and Harry's wedding.
Over the summer, the Paley Center for Media announced that Perry will be honored at the Paley Honors gala in Beverly Hills on Dec. 4 — with Prince Harry and Meghan expected to help helm the celebrations. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are among the tribute chairs alongside Whoopi Goldberg , Gayle King, Taraji P. Henson , George Lucas, Kerry Washington and more.
