25 Christian Books I Love to Recommend

good christian book reviews

John Piper Twitter @JohnPiper

What is healthy teaching, radically free to please god, did my negligence kill my baby, faith sees 3-d, how did the false teachers misuse the law, where does empty talk come from.

Founder & Teacher, desiringGod.org

I love encouraging people to read weighty, worthy, readable Christian books. I have said many times, Read! Read! Read! But beware of wasting your time on theological foam and suds. Read rich doctrinal books about the one who called you to his glory and excellence (2 Peter 1:3).

Now, I know what you are thinking: I don’t have the time or the ability to get anywhere in books like that. So, I want to show you something really encouraging. When this was shown to me, it changed my life. Most of us don’t aspire very high in our reading because we don’t feel like there is any hope.

Suppose you read about 250 words a minute and that you resolve to devote just 15 minutes a day to serious theological reading to deepen your grasp of biblical truth. In one year (365 days) you would read for 5,475 minutes. Multiply that times 250 words per minute and you get 1,368,750 words per year. Now most books have between 300 and 400 words per page. So, if we take 350 words per page and divide that into 1,368,750 words per year, we get 3,910 pages per year. This means that at 250 words a minute, 15 minutes a day, you could read about 20 average-sized books a year!

Read Well, Not (Necessarily) Much

Now, where should you start? Someone recently asked me to make a list of some of the books I have in mind that are substance , not suds . Let me stress at the outset that I don’t think reading many books is important — not for the average person anyway. Reading good books — solid books, non-sudsy books, substantial books — is really important. And reading them well.

If you wonder what I mean by reading well, one place to start is Mortimer Adler’s How to Read a Book . I read this when I was 22. If you expect to ever read another book, it is never too late for Adler.

I’ll group these recommendations into categories, beginning with biography, which is one of the most efficient ways to learn about history and theology and psychology (actually, everything ), all in the form of a good story.

Great Christian Biographies

good christian book reviews

Roland Bainton’s Here I Stand is a biography of that epoch-making Martin Luther in the 1500s.

David Daniell’s biography William Tyndale: A Biography gives us a taste of a period of history in which Christians burned Christians for reading the Bible. William Tyndale translated the Bible from Greek into English for the first time in the 1500s. He was killed for it. It’s an amazing glimpse into the kind of Christianity that burns people alive for reading the English Bible, and the kind of man who risks his life to help those people read it.

Next, two biographies by Iain Murray: Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography and The Forgotten Spurgeon . Murray is an unusually effective storyteller because there is always life and doctrine in his stories. Yet you never feel like he’s just using the story to teach the doctrine. But the doctrine really does create amazing stories. But probably the fullest, most comprehensive, yet deeply appreciative biography of America’s greatest theologian is George Marsden’s Jonathan Edwards: A Life .

Augustine’s Confessions is the longest prayer you will ever read. Seriously. The whole book is written to God. He died in 430 and is probably the most influential Christian in history, outside the Bible. His Confessions is three hundred pages long, and every page invites us into a radically Godward life. Taste and see what Augustine does there for the celebration of sovereign grace over his lecherous early life, and what God made of him.

Stories from the Mission Field

good christian book reviews

Courtney Anderson’s To the Golden Shore: The Life of Adoniram Judson tells of the man who went out from America to do missions in Burma, where he almost went insane with grief and loneliness. It is a great, soul-strengthening story.

John Paton’s autobiography, John G. Paton: The Autobiography of the Pioneer Missionary to the New Hebrides , is worth it just for the first few pages with the magnificent farewell scene between him and his father. It is an unforgettable, beautiful moment where a father who loves his son sends him off, knowing he may never see him again. But the father knew that his son was doing exactly what he wanted him to do.

Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret was written by his son and daughter-in-law. Taylor was the founder of the China Inland Mission. And getting inside his life and story is a great place to be.

Elisabeth Elliot’s biography of Amy Carmichael, A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael , is great, not only because Amy Carmichael was a one-of-a-kind woman and missionary, but because you get a taste of Elisabeth Elliot. Elisabeth Elliot was, to my mind, almost in a class by herself among twentieth-century women because of the amazing combination of gifts that she brought. (For a longer list of books about women that are worthy, I would suggest you go to Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth’s list of biographies .)

The Basics of Reformed Theology

good christian book reviews

First, two by J.I. Packer. Get Knowing God . Get A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life , which is a collection of shorter writings. You don’t have to read it straight through. In fact, in that book, Packer’s introduction to John Owen’s Death of Death is probably one of the most influential short essays in the contemporary Reformed resurgence. It catapulted many of us from a fledgling love of God’s sovereignty into a more full and robust appreciation for the truth of God’s invincible grace.

Glory Road: The Journeys of 10 African-Americans into Reformed Christianity , edited by Anthony Carter, is valuable not only because the stories themselves are fascinating and helpful, but because these ten brothers become portals into African-American authors that you may know little about and want to follow up on.

Jonathan Edwards’s Religious Affections is in a class by itself (in my judgment) for elevating and clarifying the role of the affections, or the emotions, in the Christian life. It was a shocking and glorious read for me sitting in a rocking chair on many Sunday evenings in Munich, Germany, decades ago. I am listening to it on audio even now as I write this. A Bible bath of self-crucifying acid.

The Wonder of Salvation

good christian book reviews

I would point you to two by John Stott: Basic Christianity and The Cross of Christ . There are no Stotts left that I know of. Even the Brits who are brilliant today seem to want to communicate like Americans (casual/careless). We need Stott, not only for his biblical faithfulness, but also for his impeccable clarity and precision and orderliness.

John Murray’s Redemption Accomplished and Applied — oh, how I remember reading this in my early thirties. Just the title itself is great and explains so much! It helps us understand that there is an accomplished stage in redemption, and an applied stage. A once-for-all work of redemption, and an ongoing work. It walks us through what that means in light of God’s sovereign way of working in our lives.

How to Live Like a Christian

good christian book reviews

This is the place to make sure that John Owen gets included. After Jonathan Edwards, outside the Bible, no one has fed my soul more deeply than this greatest Puritan writer who died in 1683. His small classic On the Mortification of Sin is the fullest and best exposition and application of Romans 8:13 that I know of: “If you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

I would also point you to another Puritan named Jeremiah Burroughs and his book The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment as a sampling of all those wonderful Puritan paperbacks which The Banner of Truth has reprinted . They are worthy of our attention. Packer calls them the redwoods in the forest of theology.

Spurgeon has written so much, you can’t begin to read it all. But let me point to his Lectures to My Students and highlight two chapters in that book (both available online). The first is “ The Blind Eye and the Deaf Ear ” — how to handle and survive criticism in the ministry (or anywhere). If you want to know how to navigate life when you are a controversial person, you need to have a blind eye and a deaf ear, and read what Spurgeon means by that. The other one is “ The Minister’s Fainting Fits .” That is an old-fashioned title for how to deal with depression and discouragement. I think you will be really encouraged by that short piece.

Stories That Never Happened

good christian book reviews

John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress has sold more books than any other book outside the Bible. Historically, Pilgrim’s Progress is off-the-charts helpful and influential. If you’ve never read that classic, go there.

Believe it or not, I did not read C.S. Lewis’s Narnia children’s books until my mid-thirties. I didn’t grow up in a home that even knew about C.S. Lewis. But we read them to our children. They loved them — and I loved them in my mid-thirties. I still do. The children’s books are called The Chronicles of Narnia . Get the audio set and play them for the whole family as you drive. Then there’s the Space Trilogy for an adult taste where you can see what Lewis does with science fiction in contemporary cultural criticism.

Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment — I read it as a junior in high school. I don’t remember what impact it had, but I remember being riveted by it. Just recently, I listened to it again and found it — oh my — so compelling. Dostoyevsky is compelling because of his penetrating insights into the human soul for its evil and its good and how those are all tangled up together.

Read for Your Soul

Let me close with a caution: Beware of reading for quantity to impress anyone. Read for your soul.

If we could live a thousand years, and experience a thousand relationships in the thousand times and places and cultures, perhaps we wouldn’t need books in order to (eventually) become wise. But our lives are short, and God has been merciful to give us many places, many times, many cultures, and many experiences distilled into books.

Find the ones that strengthen your faith and make you want to live all-out for God.

The 16 Best Christian Books To Read In 2024

best christian books to read in 2023

There are SO many books being written every year, knowing which one to start with can be difficult. To help you decide I made this list of the 16 best Christian books to read in 2024. These are books I’ve read and that have helped me in my life and faith. Not only have these books helped me grow my faith, but they have also inspired many of the blog posts on this site. So I want to share them with you!

This list is in no particular order, I’m not ranking them. Nor is this a list of the best Christian books of all time or that are coming out this year. On this list you will see new books, old books, and the in-between.

This is more of a list that I believe will help you grow in your faith.

Table Of Contents

The best christian books you should read.

Maybe you are thinking, well I’m not much of a reader. Yeah, me neither. At least not naturally. Reading for me is more of a discipline than a natural passion. But I’ve found reading to be something that has brought tremendous growth in my life and faith. And over time I’ve also found enjoyment in it.

I say that to encourage you if it’s been a while since you’ve read a book; maybe pick one up this year. It’s a great way to learn and grow your faith. Plus you can always get the audiobook if you really hate reading.

Alright, let’s jump into the best Christian books you should read in 2024.

1. Core 52 by Mark Moore

If you are looking for a great way to grow your faith and increase your Bible knowledge Core 52 is a GREAT book to start with. This book was written by a former professor of mine, and I can’t recommend it enough.

This book is a daily 15-minute guide that will give you the framework to grow your faith by studying God’s Word. You will gain the tools you need to the life God created you for.

There’s also a follow-up to this book that focuses on Jesus, called Quest 52 and editions written specifically for families and students.

Core 52 Book Description:  Most of us want to know the Bible better, but few reach our goal, often because we’re too busy or we don’t know where to start.  Core 52  removes both barriers, offering a common-sense solution that fits into our busy lives. Respected Bible professor and teaching pastor Mark E. Moore developed this proven process from thirty-five years of helping people grow deeper in God’s Word. Each week features a brief essay, memory verse, Bible story, trajectory verses, and practical ways to put what you’ve learned into practice. An optional “Overachiever Challenge” offers the chance to memorize the top 100 Bible verses by year’s end.  This simple approach allows you to become familiar with the big ideas of the Bible in less time and with less effort than other reading plans. In one year, you can master the core of the Bible—focusing on topics from God’s will to worry, happiness to holiness, and leadership to love. These fifty-two core passages are lenses through which you can read the rest of the Bible with clarity and confidence.

2. Good Boundaries And Goodbyes by Lysa TerKeurst

This is the first book I’m reading in 2023 and it’s a good one. I originally bought this book because I am planning a future sermon series at Storyline about creating boundaries. But as I read it I’ve personally learned a ton from it.

The reality is most of us struggle with setting healthy boundaries. In her book, Lysa talks about how boundaries are not just a good idea, but a GOD idea. Through powerful personal stories, practical advice, and insights from her counselors, this is a top Christian books that everyone should read.

Book Description: Is it unloving or selfish to set a boundary? Are Christians ever called to walk away from a relationship that’s no longer safe or sustainable? Lysa TerKeurst deeply understands these hard questions in the midst of relational struggles. But after thousands of hours of counseling intensives and extensive theological research that transformed the way she defined healthy relationships, Lysa is now more committed than ever to loving people well without losing the best of who she is. She wants to help you do the same. In these pages Lysa will help you: Understand the five factors to remember when implementing healthy boundaries. Determine the appropriate amount of personal and emotional access someone has to you based on how responsible they’ll be with that access. Stop being misled and emotionally paralyzed by wrongly interpreted or weaponized scriptures that perpetuate unhealthy dynamics in difficult relationships. Overcome the frustrating cycle of ineffective boundary-setting with realistic scripts and practical strategies to help you communicate, keep, and implement healthier patterns. Be equipped to say goodbye without guilt when a relationship has shifted from difficult to destructive and is no longer sustainable. Receive therapeutic wisdom you can trust directly from Lysa’s Christian counselor Jim Cress, who weighs in throughout the book. You’ll be relieved to learn that boundaries aren’t just a  good  idea, they’re a  God  idea.

3. The Question That Never Goes Away: Why? by Philip Yancey

I’ve read this short book a few times and constantly find myself referring back to it. It’s an incredible book that looks at why God allows such pain and tragedy in this world.

What I love about Philip Yancey’s writing style is that he includes stories of people that are going through the topic of his books. This book centers around the tragedy that struck several communities: Columbine, Sarajevo, Fukushima and Sandy Hook. They are powerful, personal, and heart-wrenching stories. And Yancey does an excellent job walking us through where was God and how should Christians respond.

This is a short book that you will not be able to put down. I believe each follower of Jesus should read this book.

Book Description: In his classic book Where Is God When It Hurts, Philip Yancey gave us permission to doubt, reasons not to abandon faith, and practical ways to reach out to hurting people. And now, thirty years after writing his first book, Yancey revisits our cry of “Why, God” in three places stunned into silence by the calamities that have devastated them.  At some point all of us will face the challenges to faith Yancey writes about and look for the comfort and hope he describes. There are reasons to ask, once again, the question that never goes away: Where is God when we suffer? And Yancey, once again, leads us to find faith when it is most severely put to the test.

4. Between Two Trees by Shane Wood

This book was written by a former professor of mine, Shane Wood . This book talks about the tragedy of sin and the mission of redemption that Jesus undertook.

Many Christians simply don’t understand what sin is and how it impacts our life and faith. This book will give you a much better understanding of sin and greater appreciation for the work of Jesus.

This book has influenced several of the posts I’ve written, most notably: What Is Sin (why it’s more than missing the mark)

Book Description: The problem of Eden is much worse than you thought, but the solution is much better than you could have ever imagined. Between Two Trees reveals that the real tragedy of Eden is a union with death, a union that produces division and despair. Life isn’t lived under Eden’s tree of life or beneath the healing leaves of the tree in the New Jerusalem. It is lived between them. And between these two trees, life is hard. In spite of this tragedy, Between Two Trees will challenge you to embrace hope, love, and the beauty of reconciliation at the true tree of life: the cross of Calvary.  By exploring the problem of Eden and the power of the cross, Shane Wood calls us to walk on a path to transformation, a path to union with God. The book journey ends under the shade of the tree of life in the New Jerusalem with God s unfinished creation now complete. Yes, Eden, but more importantly, you. The unfinished creation in us.

5. Soul Strength by Alan Ahlgrim

This book is written by Alan Ahlgrim, who was my pastor growing up, and I worked briefly with him before he retired. But this book isn’t on here just because I know him; it’s an excellent read full of powerful principles that will transform your life and faith.

I read this book as we were going through a move and job transition. And it helped me to see the importance of developing/investing in strong relationships and gave me the tools to do so.

The reality is you were created for relationships, yet most of us struggle in finding the right people. Wherever you are at in your faith, this will challenge you and help you find relationships that will deepen and enrich your life and faith.

Book Description: In Soul Strength, Dr. Alan Ahlgrim explores twelve principles that will help you experience deeper relationships than ever before and, in the process, discover the secret to creating the kind of growth and transformation you crave. The missing element in spiritual transformation for many-even for many in Christian leadership-is life with the right people. Whether you are an established church leader or a brand-new believer, you’ll learn: Why people need to hear your story The difference between living heart strong and head strong How to solve the “Am I good enough?” dilemma Why authenticity is foundational to soul strength How to manage toxic people in your life The five things common to life-giving relationships Personal transformation isn’t a destination, it’s a journey-one you can’t take alone.

6. One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp

This is a book my wife bought and when I saw it on our coffee table I picked it up. At first I was drawn in by Ann Voskamp’s writing style; I’ve never read a book with a style like hers. But then I was struck by her approach to gratitude.

I tend to be a person that is always focused on what is next. But O ne Thousand Gifts challenged me to pause and see all of God’s blessing in the here and now. And not just in the big things, but the small. It’s a great book to check out!

Book Description: In One Thousand Gifts , Ann Voskamp invites you to discover a way of seeing that opens your eyes to ordinary amazing grace, a way of living that is fully alive, and a way of becoming present to God that brings deep and lasting joy. It’s only in the expression of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we’ve always wanted . . . a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. Come to feel and know the impossible right down in your bones: you are wildly loved by God. A new introduction and ribbon marker enhances this beautiful tenth anniversary edition. As Ann invites you into her own beautiful, heart-aching moments of amazing grace, she gently teaches you how to: Biblically lament loss and turn pain into poetry Intentionally embrace a lifestyle of radical gratitude Slow down and catch God in the moment Not a book merely to read, One Thousand Gifts is an invitation to engage with truths that will serve up the depths of God’s joy and transform your life forever. Leave pride, fear, and control behind, and abandon yourself to the God who overflows your cup.

7. Skeletons In God’s Closet by Joshua Ryan Butler

Hell is probably one of those topics you dread being asked about. It can seem like God’s dirty secret, his skeletons in the closet. This book pulls the bones out into the open to exchange popular caricatures for the beauty and power of the real thing. What we thought were skeletons aren’t really at all. Rather what this book discovers is that God is good in his very bones. In what he does and who he is.

If you are like me and have questioned the traditional view of hell and want a better picture of what is going on, check out this book! This book is easily one of the best Christian books I have read.

This book has inspired several posts, for more check out: Rethinking The Traditional View Of Hell

Book Description: Is God a sadistic torturer? Coldhearted judge? Genocidal maniac?  Unfortunately, our popular caricatures often make him out to be.There are some questions no Christian wants to be asked. Many today believe hell, judgment, and holy war are “skeletons in God’s closet,” tough topics that, if looked at closely, would reveal a cruel, vindictive tyrant rather than a good and loving God. And we aren’t comfortable with the answers we’ve been given. “How can a loving God send people to Hell?” “Isn’t it arrogant to believe Jesus is the only way to God?” “Why is there so much violence in the Old Testament?” In this book, we’ll pull these bones out into the open to exchange popular caricatures for the beauty and power of the real thing. We’ll discover these topics were never really skeletons at all . . . but proclamations of a God who is good “in his very bones,” not just in what he does, but in who he is. We’ll fling the wide the closet door and sing loudly, boldly, and clearly: God is good and coming to redeem his world.

8. What’s So Amazing About Grace by Philip Yancey

If you are keeping track this is the second Philip Yancey book on this list. And I’ll be honest… I could easily fill this list of best Christian books with Philip Yancey. They have been my favorite to read and made a huge impact on my faith. I simply cannot recommend his books enough.

In What’s So Amazing About Grace Yancey examines the true grace that is shocking and scandalous. Grace shakes our conventions with its insistence on getting close to sinners and touching them with mercy and hope. It forgives the unfaithful spouse, the racist, the child abuser. It loves today’s AIDS-ridden addict as much as the tax collector of Jesus’ day. What makes this book so powerful is not just the insight Yancey offers, but also the stories he tells. He goes and meets with the people who have given and received this scandalous grace.

If I had to rank this books, this would be towards the top of the list of best Christian books I have read.

Book Description: Grace is the church’s great distinctive. It’s the one thing the world cannot duplicate, and the one thing it craves above all else–for only grace can bring hope and transformation to a jaded world. In What’s So Amazing About Grace? award-winning author Philip Yancey explores grace at street level. If grace is God’s love for the undeserving, he asks, then what does it look like in action? And if Christians are its sole dispensers, then how are we doing at lavishing grace on a world that knows far more of cruelty and unforgiveness than it does of mercy?

9. Embodied by Preston Sprinkle

Few people have I seen display such an incredible balance of truth and grace as Preston Sprinkle. Embodied is a Biblical and compassionate guide for Christians who want help navigating conversations about transgenderism. It deals with not only what the Bible says, but how to apply it with LOVE and COMPASSION. Something the church isn’t known for doing.

If you are a leader, have kids, or work with kids this is a must read.

Book Description: Preston Sprinkle draws on Scripture, as well as real-life stories of individuals struggling with gender dysphoria, to help you understand the complexities and emotions of this highly relevant topic. This book fills the great need for Christians to speak into the confusing and emotionally charged questions surrounding the transgender conversation. With careful research and an engaging style,  Embodied  explores: What it means to be transgender, nonbinary, and gender-queer, and how these identities relate to being male or female Why most stereotypes about what it means to be a man and woman come from the culture and not the Bible What the Bible says about humans created in God’s image as male and female, and how this relates to transgender experiences Moral questions surrounding medical interventions such as sex reassignment surgery Which pronouns to use and how to navigate the bathroom debate Why more and more teens are questioning their gender

10. Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey

This book is different from others on this list as it’s not a book to read cover to cover. Rather Every Moment Holy is a series of liturgies for ordinary life. This book helps us remind ourselves that our lives are full of sacred purpose.

This well-designed book has liturgies for almost every normal event in your life. And it can help you turn your focus from the mundane to God. It’s a great way to practice mindfulness in the presence of God.

Book Description: EVERY MOMENT HOLY brings new liturgies for the ordinary events of daily life, such as “A Liturgy for Feasting with Friends” or “A Liturgy for Laundering” or “A Liturgy for the First Hearthfire of the Season.” These prayers are ways of reminding us that our lives are shot through with sacred purpose even when, especially when, we are too busy or too caught up in our busyness to notice. It’s hoped that the liturgies in the Every Moment Holy series will serve as prayers to encourage readers in practicing mindfulness of the constant presence of God and draw them toward greater recognition of the eternal echoes resounding in every moment of our lives.

11. Hope In Times Of Fear by Timothy Keller

We are surrounded by things to be fearful of. Yet as Christians we do not have to succumb to that fear. And that’s exactly what Hope In Times Of Fear is all about.

In this book Keller reminds followers of Jesus exactly where their hope should be. It’s a powerful book that I think is very needed right now. And that’s why it makes this list of best Christian books.

Book Description: The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. One similarity unites each testimony–that none of his most loyal and steadfast followers could “see” it was him, back from the dead. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (John 20:14)  Hope in the Time of Fear is a book that unlocks the meaning of Jesus’s resurrection for readers. Easter is considered the most solemn and important holiday for Christians. It is a time of spiritual rebirth and a time of celebrating the physical rebirth of Jesus after three days in the tomb. For his devoted followers, nothing could prepare them for the moment they met the resurrected Jesus. Each failed to recognize him. All of them physically saw him and yet did not spiritually truly see him. It was only when Jesus reached out and invited them to see who he truly was that their eyes were open. Here the central message of the Christian faith is revealed in a way only Timothy Keller could do it–filled with unshakable belief, piercing insight, and a profound new way to look at a story you think you know. After reading this book, the true meaning of Easter will no longer be unseen.

12. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

What good would a list of best Christian books be without at least one book by C.S. Lewis? In this classic Lewis examines the common ground that we have as Christians and delivers a powerful apologetic as to why we should believe. I’m sure many of you have read this book. But if you haven’t do yourself a favor and get it today! While on this C.S Lewis kick, let me also recommend The  Screwtape Letters .

Not only is this on my list of best Christian books, this is one of the all time best Christian books.

Book Description: In the classic Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis, the most important writer of the 20th century, explores the common ground upon which all of those of Christian faith stand together. Bringing together Lewis’ legendary broadcast talks during World War Two from his three previous books The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith.

13. The Cost Of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Drawing from the Sermon on the Mount, Bonhoeffer examines the difference between cheap grace and costly grace. Here’s the best summary I found: “ The Cost of Discipleship  is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.” This book was originally written in German and then translated to English. The book doesn’t read as smoothly as others, but it’s well worth the effort.

This book is a classic and deserves to be on any list of best Christian books.

Book Description: One of the most important theologians of the twentieth century illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus  What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between “cheap grace” and “costly grace.” “Cheap grace,” Bonhoeffer wrote, “is the grace we bestow on ourselves…grace without discipleship….Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know….It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life.” The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

14. Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning

I’ll admit, I’m a little behind the times on this one; it was released quite some time ago. I’ve always heard a lot about Brennan Manning but never actually read any of his books. After picking up this book I was quickly sucked in. It’s a candid and vulnerable look at what keeps us away from God’s love. I found this a great book to read and reflected on my own relationship with God.

If you are like me and have never read Brennan Manning’s books check them out!

Book Description: Is an impostor robbing you of God’s love? We’ve bought into the lie that we are worthy of God’s love only when our lives are going well. If our families are happy or our jobs are meaningful, life is a success. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and embarrassing sins threaten to reveal our less-than-perfect identity, we scramble to keep up a good front to present to the world―and to God. We hide until we can rearrange the mask of perfection. Sadly, it is then that we wonder why we lack intimate relationships and a passionate faith. All this time God is calling us to take the mask off and come openly to Him. He longs for us to know in the depth of our beings that He loves us and accepts us as we are. When we are our true selves, we can finally claim our identity as God’s child―Abba’s child―and experience His pure pleasure in who we are. Brennan Manning encourages us to let go of the impostor lifestyle and freely accept our belovedness as a child of the heavenly Father. In Him there is life.

15. Subversive Sabbath: The Surprising Power of Rest in a Nonstop World

This was one of the most challenging books I have read. I’m terrible at taking a true rest. I can take the day off, no problem. But actually resting that day is another story. This book really challenged me to evaluate my life and to actually find time to rest. What I loved about this book was that it mixes the theology of sabbath with the practicality of how to rest in our modern world.

So far I haven’t written anything about this book, but it’s been one of the most personally challenging books which is why it made my list of best Christian books.

Book Description: We live in a 24/7 culture of endless productivity, workaholism, distraction, burnout, and anxiety–a way of life to which we’ve sadly grown accustomed. This tired system of “life” ultimately destroys our souls, our bodies, our relationships, our society, and the rest of God’s creation. The whole world grows exhausted because humanity has forgotten to enter into God’s rest. This book pioneers a creative path to an alternative way of existing. Combining creative storytelling, pastoral sensitivity, practical insight, and relevant academic research, Subversive Sabbath offers a unique invitation to personal Sabbath-keeping that leads to fuller and more joyful lives. A. J. Swoboda demonstrates that Sabbath is both a spiritual discipline and a form of social justice, connects Sabbath-keeping to local communities, and explains how God may actually do more when we do less. He shows that the biblical practice of Sabbath-keeping is God’s plan for the restoration and healing of all creation.

Top 7 Christian Book Reviewers To Follow In 2021

good christian book reviews

One of the privileges we have as a publisher is working with book reviewers. Our reviewers live all over the world, and we’re thankful for the honest insights and feedback they offer while volunteering for our team.

Reviewers regularly share info about upcoming releases by The Good Book Company and from several other publishers as well. They share thoughtful recommendations of books to build others up in Christ.

We asked some of the many amazing Christian book reviewers we recommend following in 2021 to tell us a little about themselves.

1. The Good Book Mom

good christian book reviews

Favorite book of 2020: I read a lot of Dr. Seuss growing up and my favorite book that I've reviewed this year is Melissa Kruger's "Wherever You Go, I Want You to Know". It's whimsical, fun, beautiful, and biblical!

Where to follow: www.GoodBookMom.com is my website and my main social platform is Instagram: @goodbookmom .

We recommend this reviewer for: Fun photos of kids’ books, with a mix of videos and written reviews, as well as ideas such as gift lists.

2. Bailey T. Hurley

good christian book reviews

Genres: Women’s nonfiction and children's books.

Favorite book of 2020: “The Prisoners, the Earthquake and the Midnight Song”. As my kids get older, I have been on a mad search for godly, but creative, children's books. The entire “Tales that Tell the Truth” series is awesome, and hits the mark for quality kids’ reading, but this book was especially fun. My son loved the engaging language and I was happy to have a story from the Bible that hadn't been overdone.

We recommend this reviewer for: Short, simple reviews with great photos and encouragement.

3. Aaron Lee

good christian book reviews

Genres: Theology, Christian Living, Children and Youth.

Favorite book of 2020: So many good ones. I can't decide!

Where to follow: Instagram: @diveindigdeep

We recommend this reviewer for: Live IGTV interviews with authors, gorgeous book photos, and thorough reviews including helpful summaries of key points.

4. Little Book, Big Story

good christian book reviews

Genres: I love reviewing beautiful picture books, classic children's literature, Bible resources for families, and middle-grade fantasy.

Favorite book of 2020: I suppose the honor of "Best Book I Reviewed in 2020" would have to go to Jonathan Rogers' delightful “Wilderking” trilogy. We read them for the third (and fourth!) time this summer, and they are wonderful stories, with powerful themes and certain scenes that have brought our family a lot of comfort and encouragement during this wild year.

Where to follow: Little Book, Big Story  ( http://littlebookbigstory.com/ )

We recommend this reviewer for: Helpful lists of the best books on particular topics, as well as reviews of whole series and personal reflections on why certain books mean so much.

5. Alistair Chalmers

good christian book reviews

Genres: Christian life and theology.

Favorite book of 2020: " Out of the Black Shadows " — this was my favourite book to review because the testimony of Stephen Lungu is wonderfully Christ-exalting and God-glorifying. The sturdy Smyth-sewn binding ensures that these books can be easily opened. Her works have both enlightened and challenged readers. Rivers doesn’t hold back as she delves into a fascinating person’s psyche and paints a vivid picture of the Roman Empire at its peak for the reader. This Christian fiction book takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride that is gritty and brutal at moments or quiet and intimate at others.

River’s characters are so well-written that the reader feels as if he’s known them for years. They are certainly worth reading, but you should make sure you have enough time.

  • They are instilled with scripture, which provides tremendous insights and inspiration for real-life application.
  • The narrative is exciting, intriguing, and upbeat.
  • This series is action-packed and features several plot lines, all while demonstrating the true meaning of faith
  • The books are quick and easy to read, with a good plot
  • Follows the lead of characters to urge the reader to reflect on himself and evolve
  • There’s a lot of time devoted to explaining sexuality and, to be honest, plain filthy situations
  • The unrealistic people were too perfect and acted in ways that seemed out of character

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls is a thrilling chapter-book series for children aged six to nine. The series follows the journey of Peter, Mary, and their dog Hank as they find ancient scrolls that transport them to important biblical events. They discover a world full of wonder, adventure, and danger. They must find clues to unlock the scrolls’ mystery, or they will be trapped in time forever.

Readers find this storyline captivating, and parents tend to find themselves reading the book even after their kids have fallen asleep. It’s a lighthearted, religious, humorous, clever, and exciting read. The book is engaging, educational, and entertaining all at once.

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls offers a different perspective on the Creation story that brings the story to life. Some pictures are scattered throughout the book, which is helpful for beginners. The characters are well-defined, and the books have humorous expressions. This is an excellent Christian fiction book series because it is rare to come across family-friendly novels that teach Bible lessons.

  • There are black and white drawings to help the reader visualize the book’s setting.
  • The chapters are short enough for a reader to read them, and the terminology will appeal to a wide range of readers.
  • It gives the reader an idea of what life might have been like in biblical times.
  • The storyline of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls is sound and affirms God’s goodness to children in a strong way.
  • The author advises readers exactly where in the Bible to go if they want to learn more about the story they read.
  • It lacks character development, a logical flow, and even a plausible backstory.

Reading Christian Book Series improves our understanding of the word of God and our ability to honor and respect Him in other aspects of our lives.

I recommend The Chronicles of Narnia Series Box Set by C. S. Lewis as the best Christian book series. It has incredible characterization, storyline, rhythm, conversation, humor, and a slew of other qualities. It accomplishes something that other fantasy epics do not: it tells a wonderful, timeless, and unified story spanning many chapters, with the major characters changing. Despite this, the plot never loses steam or the reader’s attention.

Christian Book Reviews

Most of my Christian book reviews focus on books for women and children because these are the books I enjoy reading or ones I enjoy reading to kids.

Reading...it is one of the most overlooked and incredible gifts God has given us! To imagine that printed lines, wiggles & squiggles, can come together to provide both information and enjoyment.

Christian book reviews women

Yes, our first primary source of both comes from the Bible - God's inspired Word. And yes, nonfiction grows our intellect and understanding.

But there is also the gift of a story even if it is fiction. My favorite genre is Christian Historical Fiction. To be inspired by lives of the past, to be nudged to read and learn more about that time period, to be picked up and set in a different place and time...it all helps give me a different perspective and appreciate my life in the here and now.

Lynn austin's latest.

Lynn Austin book review

More than a mere story, Lynn Austin, gives us a gift to lift us above the busyness of the holiday season to a space filled with God’s hope, love, joy and peace. Using each of the advent candles, she masterfully weaves the story into sections encompassing the meaning of each.

Addy and Howard’s first Christmas together turns out much different than they had expected. Addy finds eight-year-old Jack on her doorstep who has run away from an orphanage. Together Addy and Howard spend their time, money and energy helping Jack find his family. The setting of New York in 1901 provides many facets of history including how women’s suffrage was about more than just the right to vote. Along the way, Addy finds her true purpose in helping those God places in her path.

Addy sums up the lesson she learns by saying, “Maybe that’s all God asks of us. Some people are given the opportunity to do grand things in life, but if we just make a difference in the lives of the people God puts in our paths, I think He’s pleased with that.”

The characters are real and growing in their own faith. The way they handle their own doubts and struggles provide insight into truths about prayer, trusting God, and sharing these with children.

Refreshed, encouraged and hopeful are three words that fit how I felt after reading Waiting for Christmas. It’s everything you would hope to find in a Christian Historical Fiction.

This book helps to open our eyes to the small daily ways God brings opportunity for purpose during the Christmas season and beyond. It may be a book I now read every pre-Christmas season to remember and focus on this truth. It would also make a wonderful gift to share the truth of God’s great love and His gift of Jesus.

This novella is a continuation of the fuller story of Addy and Howard which is found in Lynn Austin’s previous book – All My Secrets. It is not necessary to read that book first though; I look forward to reading it next!

Thank you to Netgalley and Tyndale House Publishers for the digital ARC. All opinions are my own.

Sarah E. Ladd's New Novel

Sarah Ladd book review

As an avid fan and reader of historical fiction and Sarah Ladd’s books, I was excited to get to read her latest!

In The Cloverton Charade, Ladd brings us quality character development and a fun plot with a few twists and turns. Lucas’s kind heart captured me from the beginning, and I loved watching Olivia’s confidence grow in who she was and her value both in society and business.

I enjoyed this clean regency story with such a well-developed plot. Much of the story takes place at a house party, but the focus isn’t just on romance or the usual surface situations. There is depth of relationship as both Lucas and Olivia participate among the elite and grow in relationship to each other as well as the others in attendance. There is also a mystery which did a good job of keeping me guessing. Setting the stage for the mystery does take a bit more of the book than the solving of it; the solution came together rather quickly, but was surprising.

I was disappointed there was no mention of faith or God since it was from a Christian publisher, but there is an underlying thread of goodness. It involves identity and seeing our value as well as how kindness and seeing beyond a person’s façade can make a difference. Lucas recognizes Olivia’s inner beauty and value, and Olivia sees beyond Mrs. Milton’s grief and terseness. There is the battle for truth and honesty along with moments of forgiveness, restoration and encouragement. In other words, there is inspiration found within its pages.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the advanced copy to review with my honest opinion.

Roseanna M. White - Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor

Roseanna White Book Review

This is next on my list to read!  Roseanna M. White is also one of my favorite Christian Historical Fiction authors.

Here's what other reviewers have had to say:

"So many delightful layers to this tale, along with intriguing characters and beautiful descriptions. . . . It really puts you in the mood for Christmas."  --Melody Carlson, author of The Christmas Tree Farm and A Royal Christmas

"Sugar plums, gingerbread, and all the Christmasy feels go into this charming holiday romance."  --Michelle Griep, Christy Award-winning author of Once Upon a Dickens Christmas
