Unfortunately, we don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in graduate school admissions as we do with test prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. That said, I’d recommend directly contacting the schools/programs you’re interested in to see if they can offer any insight, or check out the programs’ websites to see if they have any info! This website is also a great place to start your research: B est Grad Schools .

I hope this helps, at least a little 🙂

Do the universities require the Academic IELTS or General?

The IELTS Academic exam is accepted by Australian universities, so long as you have a qualifying score (as seen in the score requirements listed in this post). IELTS General training, however, is not accepted by Australian universities… but is acceptable for many types of Australian migrant visas. (As a potentially useful additional note, the TOEFL is accepted both by Australian universities and Australian immigration.)

Anju Avatar

I have got overall 6 band …..listening 6….speaking 6.5….writing 6….reading 5…..i have done my graduation with 59 % how much possibility of to get my admission

It’s hard to get accepted into any major Australian universities if you have a 5 in any section. So you’ll ideally want to resit the exam and get a higher IELTS Reading score before you apply. As for your graduation at 59%, I recommend talking to admissions advisers at the universities you’re applying to, to see what 59% form your country would translate to in the Australian system.

Hi Sagar, congrats on taking the IELTS 🙂 We’re not admission experts here at Magoosh, so unfortunately, we can’t be of too much help here. With that in mind, I recommend looking up the IELTS score requirements for the schools/programs you’re interested in. If you can’t find that information in the admission section of the university’s website, I’d suggest contacting the school directly to see what their requirements are 🙂 I hope this helps, at least a little!

David Recine

With your lower writing and speaking scores, that’s a tricky question. It would depend a lot on what kind of graduate program you want to enter, and whether or not you’re open to conditional acceptance. (In conditional acceptance, you can get in with lower IELTS scores, but may need to take English classes before you begin your degree courses.)

Sydney is a relatively small higher education market. So in your case, I would recommend making a list of the grad programs you are interested in in Sydney (it will likely be a short list), and then checking the requirements for each. 🙂

Hi, I am a nursing student my overall ielts score is 5.5 and not less than 5.0 in each. Is there any higher school that can give me admission

5.5, with 5.0 in some sections, is a bit low. With those lower IELTS scores, your best shot at nursing school would be to look for an English-language nursing degree program in a non-English speaking country. (Many universities outside the English-speaking world offer English-language degree programs.)

You may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance. Under conditional acceptance, you can be accepted into a degree program even though your English testing scores are lower than required. In this case, you’ll need to take some English classes before you begin your regular nursing classes. If that sounds like it might be a good choice for you, read Magoosh’s article about TOEFL scores and conditional acceptance — the rules are exactly the same for IELTS scores.

Chinu Avatar

Hi I have score 6 in overral and 6.5L,5R,6W,6S.I want to know which university would accept this marks for bachelor of nursing

Congratulations on finishing your IELTS! We do not offer admissions services and we are not experts on schools you can enter with X score. I suggest asking nursing communities online and starting to research good programs for nursing to see what they require. Good luck! 🙂

vishal Avatar

Hi , I HAVE Scored Ielts Overall 5. so will i be able to apply any where for highers

5 is a little bit low. However, there are certainly some decent mid-tier universities that will accept students who got a 5 on the IELTS. This is especially true if you apply to an English language degree program in a non-English speaking country. (Such as a bachelors in engineering, taught in English, but hosted at an Italian university. You get the idea. 🙂 )

With an IELTS score of 5, you may also be able to get conditional acceptance , even at a top university. If you receive conditional acceptance, you’ll be able to enter a degree program. But you’ll also be asked to take some classes that help you improve your English. For more info about conditional acceptance, check out this article on the Magoosh TOEFL Blog . (Conditional acceptance works in the same way for TOEFL and IELTS scores!)

HI, I got overall 6 band in IELTS, whereas R5.5, S6, W5.5, L6.5. and I’m having good academic score 8.4 CGPA with 2 yrs of experience . Could you suggest me some good universities for this score.

As you can see in this post, a 6.0 band IELTS will get you into many of the top universities listed here. With that decent GPA and some relevant work experience, you’ll also have a shot at most lower-ranking top schools in Australia, and all of the mid-ranked schools.

advait kulkarni Avatar

I secured overall 7 marks in IELTS Exam . I am BE – Information Technology from Pune University . I have one year Post Graduation Experience in Top class IT company in Pune.

I wish to join Australian University for PG course ( MS) in 2017-18.

Which university having high rank in IT Engineering suits me well? which are the course available?

These are some very good questions. To be honest, I’m not completely sure, since Magoosh tends to focus its content and advice on American, Canadian, and UK schools. What I do know is that the Australian Education Network has a ranking system that’s well-trusted by international students. I recommend starting your research on the top engineering schools at their rankings page .

As for your score– a mark of 7 throughout each section of the test is quite good and should serve you well at any school you apply to. 🙂

Krishna Avatar

My overall band score is 6 but i got on reading and speaking. So is it necessary to take english course in australia?

i got 5 on reading and speaking***

With that score, you’d likely need to do some English courses before beginning regular degree classes… at least in the top universities on this list. (Wollongong’s policies do vary from program to program, but they generally want more than 5 in Reading for any major.)

However, there’s a chance that some lower-ranked Australian unis may accept you with your current scores. Check around, but be prepared to possibly take some extra English in Australia before you begin your regular studies.

Hi I just passed my 12 with 65% and I got 5.5 in IELTS having 5.5 in each section so will I get visa for Australia to study diploma??

Hi Shirley,

Have you contacted any admissions departments to get their input? Immigration and visa requirements are not our speciality, and the university will know the most current requirements and concessions available.

piyush Avatar

Hii I got overall ( 6 ) bend in ielts but in speaking i got only ( 5 ) bend so i am alligible for admission in Australian university

The top Australian universities in this list need more than a 5 in Speaking. However, there may be other Australian universities that would take you. I recommend checking other Australian universities to see if you meet their standards. And of course, be ready to retake the IELTS if need be. If you can raise your Speaking band by just one point, many more options will open up to you.

I got austalia Melbourne University visa or not

S-6, l-6, w-6, r-5 In 12th 64.2% In english 71

To my knowledge, Melbourne has a strict requirement of at least 6 in all individual IELTS sections. So you’ll probably need to improve your IELTS Reading score. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to contact Melbourne admissions and ask them if they can consider you, based on your graduation at 64.2% and your 71 in English. The worst they could say is “no.”

Hi Nishant,

The answer is “maybe” but it depends on each university! Gave you done some research into what those specific programs are asking for? That will be your best source of information. 🙂

Hello i got overall bandscore 7. L-8.5 S-8 R-6 but 5.5 in writing.I want to apply for nursing but couldnot get any university that accept 5.5 in one band. What should i do? Do you know some lists of university that accept only overall band score??

Hi Mahfuza,

This really depends on the individual university and their requirements! I recommend that you do some research for your target schools and contact them to ask about potential scholarships.

Hi my ielts score is 5.5 nd recently completed my senior secondry class nd i got 80% marks . I am applicable for addimission in unversites.

Hi Harshdeep,

A 5.5 band overall is often not quite high enough to get you where you want to be, so I would advise working toward a re-write. Your 80% marks are strong, but the IELTS score is sometimes not a negotiable part of your application package. Wishing you luck! 🙂

So I just want to make sure there is not any problem with visa, while my visa procedure. Plz let me know what kind of possibilities are there??

We are not visa experts and you should direct these questions straight to an immigration authority and the university itself. These are too important to trust a test prep company to answer! Good luck. 🙂

I’ve got 5.5 overall in ielts test Listening 6 Writing. 6 Reading. 5 Speaking. 5.5 Can I apply for Australia?

As you can see, those scores don’t work for Australia’s very top schools. However, there are some low-ranked but still-good schools you may have a chance with. The one thing that sticks out, though, is your Reading score of 5. If you can retake the IELTS and boost your Reading to 5.5, you’ll be able to get into many additional schools. With your current scores, your school options are somewhat limited, and you might be asked to take some English classes first before you start your regular degree classes. Check with individual Australian schools to see what their rules are.

I had scored overall band 6 in ielts .6.5 in speaking and 5.5 in rest of the module .I have done my BTech with 74% .how much possibility is there for me to get admission for masters .

Those scores are on the lower end for Masters degree program in acceptance in Australia. However, graduate admissions depend on many different factors, and you may have a chance of acceptance in some programs. My advice would be to carefully look at the admissions websites for programs you’re interested in. You may want to also directly contact admissions offices for advice on whether you can be considered. And of course, a retake wouldn’t hurt. If you can raise your scores by at least half a band in the Writing, Listening, and Reading, your chances of admission increase considerably.

Hi Mohamed,

Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid I can’t provide you with a great answer here. There are a lot of factors that go into the decision of admissions for a master’s degree. Your IELTS scores are in the range of some of these universities, but remember that these are only the top universities in Australia–there are plenty of other places that may have different requirements! I recommend that you contact the schools directly to see what they look for in their graduate students 🙂 Good luck!

My overall score is 6. Writing 6, listening 6, speaking 6, and reading 6. Do you think I have any chance to be accepted in PhD degree in civil engineering at an australian university!?

With a 6 in IELTS rather than a 6.5, it would probably be a little difficult to get into most civil engineering doctorates in Australia. However, it doesn’t hurt to check around and see if there’s a program that may accept you. There are only 43 universities in all of Australia, and of those, only some have the program you’re looking for. So it’s very possible to go through the official full list of Australian unis , check for civil engineering PhDs, and check the requirements. You may even want to email or call admissions offices and see if they can accept you with your score, even if they list a higher minimum. If you have a strong professional background or some peer-reviewed research to your name, it increases your chances of acceptance. Of course, retaking the IELTS to see if you can boost your score by half a band may be worthwhile as well.

Hi Mahendra,

According to the information in this blog, these universities all require a band score of at least 6 to be considered for admission. However, these are only a few of the universities in Australia! I recommend that you research some more universities to see if other ones accept a band score of 5.5. Good luck!

Hello sir, I am Amandeep kaur my ielts score R 6,W 6,L 6.5 ,S 5.5, B.C.A completed from Dr C.V.Raman university bilashpur can i apply for M.C.A with previous university

Hi Amandeep. Although those scores are good for the most part, your 5.5 in speaking may be a bit low for Australian universities. If you can get that up to a 6, that will increase your chances of acceptance significantly. Still, there may be some universities and programs that would accpet your scores as-is. Check with individual schools to see if they allow for a 5.5 in Speaking, or can consider you in spite of your 5.5 based on your past academic record and work history.

Himal subedi Avatar

Hello sir My overall ielts score is 6 which consists Listening 6.5 Writting 6 Speaking 6 And reading 5 And my academic percentage is 60.10 And i want to apply for Australia Do i have chance to get admission ?

It’s a little harder to get into an Australian university with a 5 in any one given section. But you may be able to find a mid-tier school that can accept you, or a higher ranked school that could accept under certain circumstances. Your past academic percentage can be taken into account as well. Whether or not a 60.10 will offset your low IELTS reading score depends on what country you’re form. For instance, a 60.10 is impressive in the Indian system, with the way the Indian scales work. But a 60.10 from South Korea (as just one example) would be equivalent to low marks in Australia.

I recommend checking with universities to see the equivalent of your marks by Australian standards, and to see if your combination of academic record and IELTS score can gain you acceptance.

Hey..my overall ielts band is 5.5 ..that is soeaking 5.5, reading 5.5, listening 5.5 and writing 6..what are the courses that i could join for?please be kind enough to leave a reply

I can tell you that you could likely get conditional acceptance at any Australian university that allows that. (In conditional acceptance, you are asked to take a semester or two of English language classes before you begin your regular degree courses.)

While 5.5 is low by Australian University standards, it looks like there may be some universities that would accept you at your current level without making you take extra English classes. You’ll find some promising leads in this document of IELTS requirements for different Australian universities . Notice that the document lists several universities as able to accept you with your IELTS scores. You’ll want to double check the website of each university, of course– I know for a fact that some of the info in the document is up-to-date, but other information may be incorrect or outdated.

somik raj shrestha Avatar

overall is 6.5 but i got 5 in speaking.. is there any chance ..?

I would say… probably . You probably have a chance because many universities are willing to be flexible on IELTS scores, especially if the rest of your application is strong. And there may be some mid-tier Australian universities that accepted a lower individual section score as well.

I would also recommend retaking the test, though. If you can get your Speaking score up by even half a band, that would open a lot more doors for you.

Shogofa Avatar

I take the IELTS and I get 5 score and I Know this Score is very less I want to apply for student visa by this band score they give me visa??

As long as you don’t have less than 5.0 in any one section, there are some Australian universities that will accept you. If that’s the case, carefully read through this document to find promising unis, but be sure to double check with the actual unis to confirm their current standards.

If you have less than a 5.0 in an individual section, you’ll probably need to retake the IELTS before you can get into a regular degree program in Australia. As for what the immigration office itself would say, to my knowledge Australian Immigration will give a visa to anyone who is accepted into university. I don’t think AU immi would have its own separate IELTS standards that you also have to meet. But you may want to also check with universities you apply to, and ask them if immigration might hold you to a 5.0 even if you’ve been accepted. (Again though, I think that’s unlikely.)

For that question, I’d refer you to this online PDF . This is a quick overview of the IELTS requirements (by whole test and by individual section) for every major university in Australia. I recently fact-checked this document, and most of the information is up-to-date. For any promising universities from that document, you’ll want to double-check the info on the actual uni website. But this should get you pointed in the right direction.

I had 7.5 overall (8 on listening, 8.5 reading, 6 for writing and 7 for speaking). I’m from Serbia and I have a Medical School Diploma for nurse (medical tehnician). Despite my score, immigration said that i need to do it again, because i need to have score of 7 for each part of the test. My goal is to enroll university in order to work there like a nurse. Can you give me any advice or solution!

First, congratulations on such a good IELTS score. Second, I’m sorry to hear that Australian Immigration turned you away. Were you actually accepted into a university, and they still turned you away? If your answer to that is “yes,” then I recommend contacting the school that accepted you and seeing if they can work with immigration and make sure you get a student visa. And if immigration turned you away before you got to apply to any school, I recommend applying to a university that accepts your IELTS scores, then coming back to immigration with the acceptance letter.

If all else fails, though, go for a resit of the IELTS. Your overall skills seem strong, and it sounds like you have a good chance of boosting your writing score with some extra study.

Hi, i am umair from Pakiatan.i completed my bachelors and masters from pakistani university where medium of instruction was english, i have been working with the same university for more than 6 years with the capacity of assistant professor. Now i have got confirmation of enrollment from university of wollongong for phd studies in advance manufacturing under HEC-UOW joint scholarship program, instead of IELTS i submitted english proficiency certificate to university. My question is that do i need IELTS score for visa purpose?

That’s a good question, but a tricky one. The relationship between Australian universities and Australian immigration (the government office that actually issues your visa) can be inconsistent. Often, a university acceptance letter is good enough for Australian visa purposes. But in certain cases, immigration may ask for an IELTS score even if your university hasn’t asked for one. Wollongong itself should know what the case is for you. So I’d say contact the program that’s accepted you, and ask them if you still need to show an IELTS score to immigration. It may not hurt to check with the immigration office as well.

Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so we’re not the best people to answer this question! I recommend that you do some research into nursing schools to learn about their admissions requirements. You’ll notice that many of these universities require that all sections be above a certain level, so you may have some trouble with the R 4.5 score.

If your scores are low, you may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance.

Hey I got 7.5 in listening, 6.5 in reading, 7 in speaking and 5.5 in writing. Can you please tell me if there is a possibility for me to get into an Institute which offers bachelors in Business?

With a lower Writing score like that, you’ll have to hunt carefully for the right school, likely a mid-tier public university. This document (via Scribd) offers a really good overview of Australian undergrad programs and their IELTS requirements. My advice is to find some universities on that list that may work for you. Then, double check those schools’ actual websites to make sure the info in the document is still up-to-date.

Hi I have got 6 overall band score in ielts with 6s .6l.5.5r.5.5w and graduation with 66% can I get admission in any college and university in Australia?

Those scores could likely get you into some Australian universities, with a good chance for acceptance into a smaller mid-tier public school. Your best guide to schools that might accept your scores would be this Scribd document . It really does provide a great list of Australian universities and their admissions standards.

Be sure to treat that document as a starting point, of course. When you find a promising university on that list, double check on the school’s real, official website to make sure the information from the Scribd document is current and accurate to actual policy.

sir , i got 6.5 on aggregate R- 7 W-5.5 S-6.5 L-6.5 I want to apply for masters…. am i eligible?

We don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in graduate school admissions as we do with test prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. With that said, your overall IELTS score meets the minimum requirement for graduate programs at some of these universities. However, the minimum band score for each section is 6.0 for nearly all of the universities on this list, so I’d recommend directly contacting any that you’re interested for more information. This website might help you:

I got 5.5 band R5,L and W 5.5 and speaking 6 Can i apply fr Australia

Those scores are a little on the low side. However, they’re not so low that I’d recommend against applying. You may need to do some research on which universities would be the best fit for you, though. This Scribd document is a good place to start. Once you find some promising universities in that list, check with the schools directly to see if their current IELTS requirements will still allow you entry.

And of course, many Australian universities offer conditional acceptance to students with lower IELTS scores, allowing them to start out in English-as-Second language courses and then transition to regular degree coursework.

Assuming that you go for undergraduate studies, your scores could likely get you accepted into University of the Sunshine Coast. Offhand, that’s the one good school in Australia I can think of that you’re eligible for. But there are likely quite a few other schools that would take you. I recommend checking out this document for a list of possible schools. From there, double-check with the schools themselves to make sure you have the most current and accurate admissions info. 🙂

haris Avatar

please can i study bachelor with 5.5 band score in one of the universities in australia

A 5.5 band score is a little bit low, however, there are some schools in Australia where that may meet the minimum requirement. Here’s a good place to start your research . With that said, you may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance. Under conditional acceptance, you can be accepted into a degree program even though your English testing scores are lower than required. In this case, you’ll need to take some English classes before you begin your regular classes. If that sounds like it might be a good choice for you, read Magoosh’s article about TOEFL scores and conditional acceptance — the rules are exactly the same for IELTS scores.

Hope this helps!

Hi Kuangyan, Thank you for the information but I think there would be some universities that will accept 5.5 each and no less than 5.5. I just have to do some research I believe.

Hello Sir/Mam

I have a score of 7.5 in listening, 7 in reading, 5.5 in writing and 7.5 in speaking and a total of 7 in IELTS. I want to know can I do masters in data science from Australia?

Although your Writing score is a bit low, your overall scores make it likely that you could get accepted into a program in Australia somewhere. You’ll want to contact Masters in Data Science programs directly to see what each program’s specific requirements are, of course. But I’d say it’s definitely worth looking into which programs might accept you.

Meeting the minimum requirements

You can demonstrate you meet English requirements by providing evidence of test results, study or work experience.

English language tests

You can demonstrate your English language skills by achieving at least:

  • a 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-band of the IELTS test, including IELTS One Skill Retake, or
  • acceptable scores in equivalent tests (PDF) .

  • Acceptable evidence of sufficient English language skills developed through paid or voluntary work experience in a primarily English-speaking professional environment in a designated country (PDF, 152KB) for at least 3 years immediately before the start of your UQ studies.

UQ only recognises accredited universities or institutions for English language proficiency purposes where English is the medium of instruction and assessment.

Meeting the higher requirements

To understand the requirements and acceptable evidence for programs with higher-level English requirements, check the program page or program-specific requirements (PDF) .

You can use IELTS test, including IELTS One Skill Retake together with the original IELTS Academic test results to demonstrate your English proficiency for all programs. Depending on the program you may also be able to demonstrate your English language skills by:

Take time don't rush

  • The most likeable thing is that we get a good blend of research faculty and industry-aligned faculties.

If you are looking for research then Unimel is one of the best, but from my experience, the syllabus is good which would make you an extrovert but it feels a bit of repetition.

Honest opinion

  • Quality of teaching, Infrastructure
  • Sem is only for 4 months so I feel it is quite fast-paced, No placements

I chose this university because of multiple factors: - Ranking - Teaching - Course structure I would say the overall experience is pretty good. I chose to do a Master of International Business because I feel it brings to the table a lot more with regards to the International aspect and adds a global perspective to all the subjects.

Australia learnings

  • I absolutely love the University of Melbourne for several reasons. First, the infrastructure is state-of-the-art, providing a conducive environment for both learning and research. Additionally, the university hosts weekly events that not only enrich the academic experience but also offer fantastic opportunities for networking and personal growth. The diversity on campus is another highlight; it's truly inspiring to be surrounded by students and faculty from all over the world. The vibrant campus life keeps every day exciting and full of new experiences. Lastly, the university's strong industry connections enhance our learning with real-world applications and open up numerous pathways for future careers.
  • While there's a lot to appreciate about the University of Melbourne, there are a few areas that could be improved. One aspect is the high cost of living and tuition, which can be a significant burden for many students. Additionally, the academic workload is sometimes overwhelming, which can affect work-life balance, especially for those also handling part-time jobs or extracurricular activities. Another issue is that some administrative processes can be slow or bureaucratic, which can be frustrating when trying to resolve issues quickly. Lastly, while the university offers many resources, navigating them can be challenging for new students, who might struggle to find the right support at the right time.

When I applied to the University of Melbourne, the process required a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement but no interview was necessary. In the GTE, I focused on why I chose the university and the specific course, detailing my interest in the subject and my career aspirations, including plans to seek employment after graduation. Although the application didn't require a Statement of Purpose (SoP) or Letters of Recommendation (LoRs), I did need to submit a CV. In my CV, I highlighted my relevant academic and professional experiences, skills, and accomplishments that aligned with my chosen program, ensuring it presented a compelling case for my admission. I chose the Master of Information Systems program at the University of Melbourne primarily because it's accredited by the Australian Computer Society. This accreditation not only ensures that the skills and knowledge I gain are recognized globally but also opens doors to membership in prestigious organizations like the Association for Computing Machinery and the Association for Information Systems. The university's strong reputation for excellence in technology and its comprehensive curriculum that aligns with industry standards made it an obvious choice for my career aspirations. Plus, the vibrant campus life and Melbourne's status as a tech hub were additional factors that drew me to this institution and program. My overall experience at the University of Melbourne has been incredibly fulfilling so far. The campus is vibrant and full of opportunities for personal and professional growth. The faculty are knowledgeable and supportive, and my peers are from diverse backgrounds, enriching our discussions and group projects. The curriculum is challenging yet rewarding, perfectly blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications. This environment motivates me every day to push my boundaries and enhance my skills.

No - But I got credits for some subjects from my bachelor's degree

The Unimelb Experience!

  • The flexibility in choosing courses and change degrees midway. ,
  • The best part I feel about my University is that despite being a commerce student, I have the freedom to choose a maximum of 6 subjects from any other field than that of my focus for example I can choose to study one subject course of computer science, or biology, or even fine arts and theatre
  • I dislike the fact that a students has to be an over achieving student to receive any honorary awards or scholarships. I personally feel it to be a tedious task as I work part time and study, so I find it difficult to excel in all aspects of university such as grades and extracurricular activities

My overall experience has been fun, enlightening and has contributed to my personal and professional growth. I have learnt how to manage my time, priorities and even my social life with the amount of freedom I have. Study is hard, but once you've learnt how to crack assignments and tutorial work, exams become easy tasks whether they are held online or offline. I have made many connections over the years and have also been a part of many student clubs and societies. I have also maintained good relationships with some of my professors and tutors whom I take advice from, from time to time.

University of Melbourne: Best in Australia!

  • University of Melbourne is the highest ranked university in Australia, and what attracted me to it was the "Melbourne Model" which allows students to study subjects under different faculties. This was particularly interesting to me since I wanted to experiment with different subjects before making up my mind about my career. Furthermore, Melbourne is one of the best cities to live in, offering opportunities to learn about different cultures and ways of life. All these factors in cumulation made UniMelb my first choice! ,
  • The academic flexibility with regards to shifting your majors or studying subjects under different faculties, cross-cultural exposure given the international nature of the university and the myriad of internship or paid employment opportunities at one's disposal.
  • University life in Australia can get quiet isolating given the divide between domestic and international students. I found the lack of sense of belonging to the most promising challenge. Moreover, the curriculum is structured to emphasizes independence and self-reliance, which can pose a significant challenge for students coming from diverse educational backgrounds.

I would rate it as superb, it has pushed me to try and experiment. I have loved it through and through!

I received the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship which covered 100% of my tuition fees for the entirety of my undergraduate studies. It is purely based on academic merit.

Why University of Melbourne is great destination

  • University of Melbourne's world-class ranking and multi-cultural research environment attracted me.

Great experience, great university and staff, limitless facilities.

I got Melbourne Research Scholarship which was 30,000 AUD/year. The scholarship applications was submitted with the admission application by checking one box only.

Graduate Research Experience at UniMelb

  • Good Ranking in the domain I work and professor profile. Also dual doctoral prospect was also an important factor.

My overall experience was very wholesome. I visited Melbourne during CoViD period and the university helped me a lot to carry on with my research work.

Yes, Melbourne Research Scholarship for Graduate Students.

The university of Melbourne

  • The Faculty members were excellent and very supportive . ,
  • The university offers variety of programes. ,
  • The placement is very good and easily available
  • Too flexible you have to search your own timetable. ,
  • its really hard I do not think the entry scores reflect how hard the course is ,

I approached IDP and I feel that literally all the information that they gave me was available online. In my case, my younger brother had already started his under graduation in the same university. So, as per the university life experience was concerned, I obviously talked to him about it.

To get admission in the Ph.D in Science program of the University of Melbourne you must have a masters degree in a relevant discipline, including a substantial research component with a WAM of at least 75%. Students who have graduated from other universities must also have a Referee report and Endorsement from a prospective supervisor. The criteria considered in the admission selection process are mentioned below.

  • prior academic performance and, if relevant, professional qualifications
  • understanding of the research question to be explored
  • motivation and capacity to complete the course in a timely manner
  • relevant prior research and/or professional experience, and
  • referee reports.

The University of Melbourne offers Ph.D in Science in six disciplines: Bioscience, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Ecosystem and Forest Sciences and Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. To be eligible for admission, you must have a masters degree in a relevant discipline, including a substantial research component with a WAM of at least 75%. Students who have graduated from other universities must also have a Referee report and Endorsement from a prospective supervisor.

If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree at another institution or if you are willing to transfer from another institution, you need to apply directly through the university’s online application system. You may need to supply detailed subject information about subjects you have already completed at other institutions if you wish to be assessed for advanced standing.

The Australian education system is highly regarded across the world. Both domestic and international students benefit from top-tier educators and comprehensive curricula. Just like in other English-speaking countries, you need a successful IELTS result to study at Australian universities. But that’s not always the case.

In fact, we’ve accumulated a list of the top 8 Australian universities to study at without having to give an IELTS exam!

Table of Contents

1. The University of Queensland

The first on our list is the University of Queensland. The esteemed educational institute prides itself on giving every student a chance. Typically, the university does require a successful IELTS result as proof that you can speak and comprehend English properly. But there are some alternative routes available if that’s not possible for you.

The primary question here is about your ability to study in English, and that can be proven in many ways. You could prove your English proficiency by presenting any of the following pieces of evidence:

A document to corroborate that your previous degree was taught in English

Proof of your English subject grades if they were promising

Any relevant certificate showcasing your English proficiency

Proof of acquiring your previous degree from an accredited educational institution recognized by the University of Queensland

Proof of having attended at least a two-year study program at a recognized educational institute

A minimum of three-year work experience in a professional English-speaking setting

2. Swinburne University of Technology

Another top-class university that’s very accommodating in terms of English proficiency is the Swinburne University of Technology. The internationally-recognized institute is located in Melbourne, the coastal capital of Victoria.

If you’re passionate about getting your higher education from SUT, you don’t necessarily need an IELTS or TOEFL. If you hold a high score on the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, Common European Framework (CEF), or VCE English, you can still qualify.

If even these don’t work for you, there are more avenues of opportunity. You can enroll yourself in a preparatory English course offered by the university. You’ll find two types of these courses: (1) General English and (2) English for Academic Purposes.

3. Bond University

Bond University is Australia’s very first private, not-for-profit education institute that’s built an international reputation. As a dedicated applicant with promising grades, you can prove your English proficiency in multiple ways:

A good score on the C1 Advanced or PTE Academic Tests

A document proving that you have completed your secondary education in an English-taught school in certain approved countries, including England, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

4. The University of New South Wales

When it comes to world-class educational institutes across multiple avenues — teaching, research, and advancement — the University of New South Wales does not disappoint! If you’re adamant about trying your luck there without an IELTS or TOEFL, you have a chance. The university accepts a wide variety of English qualifications.

If you’re willing to undertake a different test, the following are accepted:

PTE Academic

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE)

Cambridge Proficiency: English (CPE)

If you want to steer clear of tests altogether, you can also provide other relevant pieces of evidence to prove your English proficiency.

  • If your English subject grades in your previous degree were well above satisfactory, you can submit them to the admissions office.
  • If you’ve worked for at least 2 years in a professional English-speaking establishment, you can submit a letter of reference from your employer.

If you’re able to provide any of the above pieces of evidence to cite your proficiency, you won’t have any trouble!

5. The University of Southern Queensland

The University of Southern Queensland has received praise many times for the outstanding graduates it has produced for its community. You can promise yourself a bright future as a student of this esteemed institute.

The university will accept your English proficiency if you:

  • Have completed your previous course of study in English or
  • Are from an English-speaking country.

You also have a chance of qualifying if you have completed an AQF level 5 qualification, worked as an employee, or practiced an accredited occupation in Australia.

6. The University of Adelaide

The city of Adelaide is a remarkable place for students — friendly people, easy on the pockets, and very accessible. The University of Adelaide is a high-ranking educational institute that welcomes many international students every year!

If the admission committee deems your application as appealing, they can give you a chance without IELTS or TOEFL. You will be required to attend the university’s language preparatory course that takes one academic year. You’ll be required to take a test at the end of both semesters to prove your English skills.

7. The University of South Australia

To get approved into The University of South Australia, your English proficiency can be accepted in many ways. If not IELTS/TOEFL, you could take:

Occupational English Test (OET) (Health Science Programs)

Alternatively, you can also undertake an English language course at CELUSA or another institution accredited by the University of South Australia.

8. Macquarie University

The last institute on our list is Macquarie University, another great place where you can prove your English skills in different ways. Aside from IELTS, the following certificates are accepted:

It’s not all about IELTS when it comes to showcasing your English language skills in Australian universities. Many institutes are prepared to give you a chance if you’ve got what it takes.

Ron Ford immigrated with his family to Australia in 2005 to work as a social worker. Following their difficult immigration process, he slowly turned to blogging and creating content about immigration: "…As a family of 5, we struggled to make ends meet. I was working around the clock and Clarissa was working in housekeeping any time she could spare. The move to Australia completely changed our lives, but it cost us a lot of money, time, and tears. Ever since I've wanted to help others on their journeys the way I wished someone had helped us".

English Language Proficiency Requirements

You will be required to submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores if you do not hold a degree from a U.S. institution or from one of the English speaking countries (below).  If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with international credentials, you will still be required to submit English test scores if you do not hold a degree from one of the countries on the list at the bottom of this page.

Options for providing evidence of English proficiency include:

Test of English as a Foreign Language  (TOEFL iBT) Score

  • For the University of Maryland to receive your TOEFL score, please use the reporting code 5814.

Pearson  (PTE Academic) Score

  • PTE test takers can send their score reports to the University of Maryland through their Pearson Account.

International English Language Testing System  (IELTS Academic) Score

  • The University of Maryland downloads IELTS scores that have been transmitted to our e-download account.  IELTS test takers should contact their IELTS test center directly to request electronic test scores be sent to the following IELTS e-download account:

University of Maryland College Park

The Graduate School

2123 Lee Building

College Park

Maryland, 20742

Please note: The Graduate School will not accept paper IELTS test report forms.

The Graduate School also accepts current/valid scores from TOEFL iBT Home Edition, the IELTS Academic Online, the IELTS Indicator (Academic), and the PTE Academic Online.

If your TOEFL/IELTS/PTE score falls within the range for conditional enrollment,  the Graduate School may admit you with an  English language condition . If so, you will be notified of this requirement in your official admission letter issued by the Graduate School.

New iBT TOEFL requirements will take effect starting with Fall 2020 admissions (see chart below). No change will be made to the IELTS and PTE requirements. Beginning in August 2019, we will accept iBT TOEFL Superscores from ETS for purposes of meeting iBT TOEFL subscore requirements. If more than one valid IELTS or PTE score is submitted we will also consider the highest sectional scores from across all exams when determining whether requirements for full enrollment have been met. Please note that superscoring can only be done with the same types of test. For example, we will not superscore between an IELTS and a TOEFL exam. Please note that superscoring two PTE exams means one PTE with 68+ overall, and one PTE with 68+ writing.

Total 68 61-67 60 and below*

Please note that if the scores fall in the range of needing one of the English courses, one of the following will apply:

Intensive English:

  • Graduate students whose English test scores are in the range of Intensive English must enroll in and successfully complete the Intensive language course at the Maryland English Institute. This is usually a semester-long course.*
  • While enrolled in Intensive English, students are not permitted to undertake academic coursework.
  • *Students whose total TOEFL score is in the low 80s, or who have an IELTS score below 6.0 or a PTE score below 56, run a higher than normal risk of needing to spend more than one semester in Intensive English. There are five semester-long levels of Intensive English and the students with Intensive English placement are given a test at the beginning of the semester to determine their level. Students with these lower scores are at a higher risk of not placing into the highest level of Intensive English and thus needing more than one semester in the program, which would postpone any academic coursework for at least one academic year.

English Bridge Program:

  • Graduate students whose English test scores are in the range of the English Bridge Program must enroll in and successfully complete the Semi-Intensive language course at the Maryland English Institute during their first semester.
  • They can take up to two academic courses in addition to this English study.

Advanced English Writing Class:

  • Graduate students whose TOEFL or IELTS meets the sectional score requirements for full admission, with the exception of the writing score, will be admitted with the condition that they successfully complete the Advanced English Writing Class at the Maryland English Institute in their second semester of study.

Exempt from Submitting TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Scores:

  • Students who have received a degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a nationally recognized university in one of the countries on the subsequent list do not need to submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores.  This exemption also applies to students who are currently studying for a degree at an institution in the U.S. or one of the countries on the list, but will receive their degree before enrolling at the University of Maryland.
  • Note  that you must have studied in the country and not in an online program nor at a foreign branch campus to be granted the exemption.  Students who have done a dual degree Bachelor’s program and earned a degree from an institution in a country on the list and a degree from a country not on the list, must have spent at least 2 years studying in the country on the waiver list to be eligible for an exemption from submitting an English score.
  • Students who have transferred into a Bachelor's program at an institution in a country on the list must have spent at least 2 years studying in the country on the waiver list to be eligible for an exemption from submitting an English score.

Please be advised:

  • The School of Music will only allow an applicant to the M.M. or D.M.A. to be exempt from submitting a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score if they have earned an undergraduate degree from an institution in the United States or another country on the waiver list.  Any applicants required to submit an English score must have a TOEFL score of at least 88 to be scheduled for an audition.  However, an English score sufficient for full admission must be received in order for admission to be processed.  Those applying to the M.M. are only required to score a 20 on the writing section of the TOEFL to qualify for full admission.
  • The same TOEFL, IELTS and PTE requirements apply for applicants to online and hybrid programs (programs which are partially online and partially on campus), however, the scores must meet the requirements for full admission.  We can’t admit students to online and hybrid programs whose scores fall in the range of needing English study as they will not be on campus to attend the necessary English course.
  • The same TOEFL, IELTS and PTE requirements apply for applicants to programs on the 12-week term calendar, however, the scores must meet the requirements for full admission.  English courses take place on the semester-based calendar, and students cannot be enrolled in courses on the semester-based calendar and the 12-week term calendar simultaneously.
  • Graduate School policy in the Graduate Catalog
  • More details about the course requirements on MEI's website

NOTE:  These are the general TOEFL, IELTS or PTE requirements that have been established by the Graduate School.  Individual programs reserve the right to hold their applicants to more stringent requirements, including only considering applicants whose TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores meet the requirements for full admission.  We recommend that you check with the program that you are applying to in order to make sure that they do not have additional requirements above and beyond what is listed here.

14 Universities in Australia that Accept IELTS 6.0

If you think of Australia, probably exotic species of animals such as koalas and kangaroos will first come to mind, but for international students, this large island is a great place to study as well.

Several hundred years ago, the Australian continent was colonized by Great Britain, which today is called the United Kingdom. Due to British influence, many people in Australia are fluent in English, which is the primary language of education.

To set a standard for incoming international students, many universities in Australia have set a minimum score limit for English proficiency tests such as the IELTS. In today’s guide, we will be looking at 14 universities in Australia that accept IELTS 6, and in our case, IELTS 6 means the overall band score instead of the scores of individual sections.

The first section of our post will cover some of the major questions asked by international students, and after that, we will dive straight into our list of universities in Australia that accept the overall score of IELTS 6. Also, please keep in mind that some universities have higher IELTS requirements for harder courses, so be sure to read each section carefully!

Universities in Australia Accepting IELTS 6.0 Band Score

1. australia national university.

  • IELTS Requirement |  Tuition Fees | Scholarships

The first university in Australia that accepts an IELTS score of 6.0 is Australia National University . This is one of the leading universities in Australia, and it is located in Australia’s capital, Canberra. The only academic section that accepts an overall IELTS score of 6.0 is the diploma programs taught at ANU College.

In addition, you need to have a minimum of 5.5 in each component of the test. In all other sections other than ANU diploma programs, you will need an overall IELTS score higher than 6.0.

For example, ANU exchange programs & studying abroad require an overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component of the test. For Australian National Internships & MChD Programs, you will need an overall score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component of the test.

Last but not least, you will need an overall score of 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in each component of the test if you want to apply for a Master of Clinical Psychology or Master of Professional Psychology.

2. James Cook University

  • IELTS Requirement | Tuition Fees | Scholarships

Ranked for its friendly student service and high-quality education, James Cook University boasts of its renowned faculty with its support staff. The minimum IELTS requirement for both undergraduate and graduate programs at JCU is an overall score of 6.0 and no component less than 6.0. James Cook University has a set English requirement, and it fits the bill here so here it is!

3. University of Tasmania

As an island state of Australia, Tasmania has a lot in store for unsuspecting international students. Filled with diverse wildlife and plant species, many students of the University of Tasmania enjoy hours of hiking, walking, or cycling around the island. Even more, you can go to tall cliffs and beautiful beaches that line the coast of Tasmania.

You are probably wondering about the IELTS requirement for this university, this Australian university requires an IELTS Band of 6.0 for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

4. University of New England

Established in 1938, the University of New England is a powerhouse university that was created by the University of Sydney . UNE is one of the leading institutions in online education, and it continues to influence international students with its 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. Most courses at UNE are available to students with an overall IELTS score of 6.0, and to check out the list of courses that need a higher overall score, click here .

5. Victoria Unversity

  • IELTS Requirement | Tuition Fees |  Scholarships

To have an edge over the competitive market of education, Victoria University has implemented several options that enhance the undergraduate and graduate programs.

To add flexibility to its education, Victoria University has implemented several online programs and financial aid services to support its hard-working students.

To ensure your success, courses at Victoria University were created in partnership with industries in that specific field, so when you graduate, you will have the skill set that an actual industry is looking for.

If you have an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS, then you can apply for any undergraduate programs offered by Victoria University; however, if you want to apply for any graduate courses offered at Victoria University, you need to have a higher overall score in IELTS than 6.0 since the minimum requirement for graduate programs is 6.5.

6. La Trobe University

Next on our list of universities that accept an IELTS score of 6.0 is La Trobe University . Similar to our first institution, La Trobe University has different standards for its undergraduate programs as well as its graduate programs.

For its undergraduate programs, you need at least an overall score of 6.0 with sectional band scores that are no less than 6.0.

If you want to apply for its graduate program, you will need a higher overall score of 6.5 with sectional band scores that are no less than 6.0.

You will see a similar trend as you go down the list since many universities have some courses that are available for IELTS 6.0 while some courses are not available to students with an overall IELTS score of 6.0.

If you want to attend a university in Australia without having to worry about the minimum IELTS score, why not aim for a higher score than 6.0?

7. University of South Australia Online

As a 100% virtual university, UniSA Online offers online degrees that feature a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Established 25 years ago, the University of South Australia Online was one of the first institutions to break free from the traditional mold of in-class teaching to a brand new world of virtual discussions. The minimum IELTS requirement for UniSA undergraduate programs is an overall band score of 6.0 and a minimum sectional score of 6.0 for reading and writing.

8. Flinders University

As one of the innovative institutions in Australia, Flinders University provides a dynamic educational environment for its incoming students.

One thing to remember about this university is that all undergraduate courses except Arts (High Exercise Science), Exercise Science, Human Nutrition, Midwifery, Nutrition and Dietetics, Psychology (Honours), Psychological Studies (Graduate Entry), Psychological Science, Law and Legal Practice, Law and Legal Practice (Honours), Speech Pathology, Education, Medicine, and Nursing are available to students with an overall IELTS score of 6.0.

If you do want to study in one of the courses listed above, you need to have a higher overall score and higher sectional scores in Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Writing. The same thing applies to postgraduate studies and research, so be sure to check the English language requirement for your designated course before applying.

9. Swinburne University of Technology

Similar to Flinders University, Swinburne University of Technology has several exceptions when it comes to its undergraduate programs. For an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS, you can only apply for all undergraduate programs  except education, law, honors in psychology, and professional degrees.

If you do want to study in one of the exceptional courses or postgraduate programs (Master’s or Ph.D.), you need a higher overall score in IELTS to apply.

10. University of Canberra

As one of the youngsters in the field of education, the University of Canberra is situated in the capital of Australia. Due to its quality education, this institution is known for its high employment rates among its graduates, and many alumni of UC hold vital positions in public and private sectors in countries around the world.

The University of Canberra is one of the universities in Australia that accepts an IELTS score of 6. However, due to its high academic standards, there is a limit when students come with an overall IELTS score of 6.0. If you do have that specific score, you can only apply for undergraduate programs with “standard” English proficiency requirements.

What does that mean? This means that you cannot apply for nursing programs that would require a higher understanding of the English language. For example, a prospective international student with an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS cannot apply for Arts, Midwifery, Nursing, and so forth.

11. University of Southern Queensland

As the tenth institution in our list of universities in Australia that requires IELTS band 6, the University of Southern Queensland offers everything that a student can hope for, and it currently has nearly 300,000 students from all around the world.

For a student with an overall IELTS score of 6.0, you can apply to all undergraduate programs except courses related to Midwifery, Paramedicine, Sport and Exercise, and Laws.

If you want to apply for a graduate program, you can only apply for GDTI, MADS, MCTN, MCYS, MISP, and MPAC if you have an overall IELTS score of 6.0.

12. Charles Darwin University

As one of the leading research universities in Australia, Charles Darwin University is a new world university that focuses on creativity and sustainability.

Being one of the rising universities in the city of Darwin, CDU also has limited entry requirements for students with an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS.

With that specific score, you can apply to all undergraduate programs except courses related to Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Education, Health Science, and Therapy. And again, look carefully at the eligibility requirements for your course!

13. Central Queensland University

Similar to our previous institution, Central Queensland University has various limits if you have an overall score of 6.0 in IELTS. With that standardized test score, you can apply for undergraduate programs related to business, engineering, medical science, and medical laboratory science. If you want to apply to undergraduate programs other than the ones listed above, you will need a higher score on IELTS than 6.0.

14. Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

We end our list of best universities in Australia that accept IELTS Band 6 is the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology , which currently houses students from over 100 different countries.

Setting its goal to be culturally diverse, RMIT continually accepts international students and has been expanding its study abroad / exchange programs for many years. Ranked as one of the top five universities in Australia, RMIT offers a great educational experience for students who choose to stay here.

The minimum overall IELTS score for VCE, VE, and Foundational Studies is 5.5, and these courses are prerequisite classes that you can take if you don’t have the qualifications to study for your bachelor’s degree.

For associate degrees, the minimum IELTS score is 6.0, and these degrees are not bachelor’s degrees since they are only two-year courses that prepare you for your entry to higher education.

Last but not least, the minimum IELTS score for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is between the overall score of 6.5 and 8.0, so be sure to check the requirements carefully before moving on to the next university.

FAQs about Studying an English-track Program in Australia

Is an overall band score of 6.0 good enough to study in australia.

For many universities, an overall band score of 6.0 passes the minimum requirement of English proficiency; however, if you want to study in a field of medicine, midwifery, and health sciences, you will be required to have a higher score in IELTS such as 6.5 or 7.0. The main reason for this high standard is that you need to be highly proficient in English if you want to take courses that put human lives at stake.

It is highly understandable since you need to completely understand what your teacher is talking about and what your textbook is saying since one misinterpretation in English can lead to disastrous results.

What is the Lowest IELTS Score that Passes the Standards of Australian Universities?

The lowest overall score of IELTS that passes the admissions requirement of Australian Universities would be around 6.0 to 6.5. As previously mentioned, 6.0 is a great score to aim for since many universities in Australia have a minimum score of 6.0.

If you want to pass by a thread, 5.5 will be the score to go for since some Australian universities do allow students with that overall score to take courses in their universities. Last but not least, many universities in Australia offer English courses that international students can take if they are struggling with English.

We hope this article on universities in Australia that accept an IELTS score of 6.0 was helpful! Also, check out the Study in Australia and Available Programs for International Students  pages for more informative articles on studying in this great country.

Undergraduate course application eligibility

To apply for a Melbourne undergraduate degree, you'll need to meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

If you have completed a secondary school qualification that is not listed on our website, your eligibility for entry to an undergraduate course will be assessed on a case-by-case basis during the application process.

Minimum entry scores

Guaranteed or indicative entry scores have been set for international applicants seeking entry based on overseas secondary school qualifications , Australian secondary qualifications or through a foundation program .

If you meet the required scores, as well satisfy minimum entry requirements, subject prerequisites and English language requirements, you may be guaranteed entry into an undergraduate degree.

Guaranteed scores apply only if no further study has been undertaken after completion of your secondary education or foundation program.

New PGWP Rules for International Students In Canada

  • 19 September 2024, 8:43 AM EDT 19 September 2024, 8:43 AM EDT
  • New Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit Eligibility Criteria

Last Updated On 19 September 2024, 8:43 AM EDT (Toronto Time)

New PGWP rules 2024 : Starting November 1, 2024, new language proficiency requirements will be introduced as part of the PGWP application process.

These updates aim to improve the integration of international graduates into Canada’s workforce, ensuring they possess the necessary language skills to succeed in the country’s labour market.

Most of these updates align with what we first reported in June 2024 that IRCC is working on 8 new PGWP changes .

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the collective key changes clearing out doubts of international students in Canada.

All About New PGWP Rules 2024

1. new language proficiency requirements.

One of the most significant changes to the PGWP program is the introduction of language proficiency requirements.

The Canadian government has decided to implement this change to ensure that graduates have the necessary language skills to thrive in their post-graduate work experience and make a smoother transition to permanent residency.

  • University Graduates: Graduates from universities will be required to meet a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7 .
  • College Graduates: Graduates from colleges will need to meet a CLB level of 5 .

The introduction of these language requirements aims to enhance the communication skills of graduates, helping them adapt more effectively to the Canadian workplace and society at large.

This will also make it easier for graduates to qualify for immigration programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), which often require language proficiency as part of the selection criteria.

2. Focus on Long-Term Labour Market Needs

In addition to language requirements, the revised PGWP rules focus on aligning the program with Canada’s labour market needs, as we first reported in June that IRCC is working on 8 new PGWP changes.

International students graduating from fields of study linked to occupations in long-term shortage will be eligible for a PGWP of up to three years .

This strategic move is designed to ensure that Canada’s immigration system better meets the country’s workforce demands.

By prioritizing graduates from sectors facing long-term shortages, the government aims to address the country’s evolving economic challenges.

Some of these sectors include healthcare, technology, engineering, and skilled trades, which are in high demand due to Canada’s aging population and growing industries.

Although, IRCC has not clearly provided list of occupations in long-term shortage for PGWP purposes, but they are targeting below occupations for Express Entry targeted draws citing that these sectors have labour shortages.

  • 35 healthcare occupations
  • 25 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) occupations.
  • 10 trade occupations
  • 10 transportation occupations
  • 3 agriculture and agri-food occupations

3. Superimposing Previous Changes

These new updates to the PGWP program will supersede the changes introduced earlier in 2024.

Notably, the previous regulations, effective from February 15, 2024, allowed master’s program graduates —irrespective of program duration (whether less than or more than two years)—to be eligible for a three-year PGWP.

This extension was designed to help master’s graduates transition more smoothly into Canada’s labour force, offering them more time to gain work experience and increase their chances of securing permanent residency.

With the new November 2024 updates, however, even these students will be required to meet the relevant language proficiency and field of study criteria in order to qualify for a PGWP.

The government’s goal is to streamline the program further, ensuring that international graduates possess both the educational background and the language skills needed to thrive in the Canadian economy.

4. Long-Term Implications for International Students

The upcoming changes signal a shift toward a more selective PGWP program, targeting graduates with specific skills and language abilities that align with Canada’s immigration and labour market needs.

For international students, these changes mean greater emphasis on academic and language preparation before applying for a work permit.

Graduates who meet the updated criteria will not only be able to gain valuable Canadian work experience but will also have a better chance of transitioning into permanent residency through the various immigration streams available to skilled workers.

What Is the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) ?

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the national standard used in Canada to measure and describe a person’s ability to use the English language.

The CLB system assesses language proficiency across four key areas: Listening Speaking Reading Writing

CLB levels range from 1 to 12, with higher numbers representing more advanced language abilities.

It is commonly used in Canadian immigration programs, such as Express Entry, to assess language proficiency and eligibility for permanent residency.

The introduction of specific CLB requirements for the PGWP program means international graduates must demonstrate their proficiency in English at a certain level to qualify for a work permit.

What do CLB 5 and CLB 7 levels mean?

To meet the new PGWP requirements, university graduates will need to achieve a CLB level of 7 , while college graduates will need a CLB level of 5 .

Here’s what these CLB levels represent in terms of language proficiency and how they correlate with popular English language tests such as IELTS and CELPIP .

CLB 7 in IELTS and CELPIP IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6 bands in each module CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program): 7 in each module

CLB 5 in IELTS and CELPIP IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 4-5 bands in reading and 5 each in rest of the modules CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program): 5 in each module.

How CLB Levels Impact PGWP Applicants

For international students aspiring to apply for a PGWP, understanding the CLB requirements is essential, but easily achievable.

A higher CLB level 7 for university graduates indicates that applicants have a strong grasp of English, which is crucial for integrating into Canada’s workforce.

On the other hand, a lower CLB level 5 for college graduates reflects a more basic level of proficiency but is still adequate for work in certain sectors.

The introduction of these language requirements suggests that Canada is prioritizing skilled graduates who can contribute more effectively to the economy.

For students, it’s now more important than ever to focus on language training in addition to their academic pursuits.

The new PGWP rules coming into effect on November 1, 2024, mark a significant shift in Canada’s immigration policies for international students.

By introducing language proficiency requirements and focusing on fields of study linked to long-term labour shortages, the Canadian government is aligning its immigration pathways with the country’s economic needs.

For international students, this means better preparation is needed not only in their academic fields but also in language proficiency.

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels of 5 and 7, measured through IELTS and CELPIP, will play a crucial role in determining eligibility for a PGWP, shaping the future of many aspiring immigrants in Canada.

International students must stay informed about these changes and take the necessary steps to ensure they meet the updated requirements.

The PGWP remains a valuable pathway to Canadian permanent residency, but only for those who meet the evolving standards.
