What to Do Instead : Cross-check any data or information ChatGPT generates through reliable sources.

3. Ethical Concerns

ChatGPT may create culturally insensitive material. For instance, you wouldn't want your app's UX to include stereotypes that could exclude users from diverse backgrounds. Similarly, ChatGPT is not likely to suggest accessible solutions without careful prompting.

What to Do Instead : Review and edit the AI-generated content, keeping your varied user base in mind.

4. Over-Reliance on Automation

Overusing ChatGPT for every aspect can diminish the human touch. The user interface should evoke emotions that artificial intelligence cannot understand.

What to Do Instead : Use ChatGPT as a supplementary tool while valuing human input and creativity .

5. Limited Interdisciplinary Knowledge

ChatGPT has broad but shallow knowledge. For UX design in a specialized sector, like finance, you would benefit more if you know user behavior through psychological and sociological lenses.

What to Do Instead : Collaborate with experts from relevant fields to better understand the user experience.

Knowing these limitations lets you decide when to use ChatGPT and when to rely on other methods or expertise.

So, What’s Next?

19 ways to use ChatGPT in UX design (with sample prompts)

chatgpt ux case study

Editor’s note:  This post was last updated on 4 January 2024 to include even more use cases for ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Logo Over Color-Blocked Background

Almost a year has passed since ChatGPT was first released, yet it’s still one of the hottest topics on the Internet and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. That’s not surprising. ChatGPT is unlocking new ways of working we couldn’t even imagine before. With just a few text prompts, you can leverage AI capabilities to save hours of manual work.

The same goes for UX designers. With the proper use of ChatGPT, you can easily double your productivity while maintaining your quality standards. Let’s explore how.

Why UX designers should use ChatGPT

Many people preach that ChatGPT, and AI in general, will soon make many professions — including UX design — obsolete.

They are right.

Well…to some extent.

While I heavily doubt AI itself will be able to replace the complex art and science of UX design, I’m pretty convinced that UX designers using AI will make non-AI-savvy designers obsolete.

Effective use of tools such as ChatGPT allows UX designers to work faster, avoid the blank page syndrome, and ideate new ideas quickly. Given how competitive the UX field is, the ability to work with AI tools such as ChatGPT will soon become a must-have requirement.

You don’t want to be a laggard here.

Using ChatGPT to get inspiration

There’s no worse feeling in the world for a UX designer than looking at the blank Figma file with the overarching thought, “Where do I even start?” Who’s never experienced this situation? Throw a rock.

Luckily, there are a few ChatGPT prompts that can give you some inspiration to get unstuck. The prompts I use most often help me by:

  • Generating user flows
  • Ideating wireframes
  • Suggesting colors, typography, etc.

I’ll show you how ChatGPT can help with each one.

Generate user flows

Whenever I work on a new feature, I like to start with getting the initial user flow from ChatGPT. Although these are simplistic and far from complete, they give a solid starting point for further work. Plus, they are better than a blank page.

Make sure to include details such as the type of product you are designing, whom you are designing for, and what use cases the feature will support. Here’s my sample prompt:

I’m designing a [type of product] for [user persona]. I’ll give you a description of a new feature I’m working on. Generate user flows for that feature. The feature: [quick description of the feature] The possibilities: [list of use cases]

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Create User Flows

Ideate wireframe layouts

While ChatGPT itself doesn’t yet provide visual outputs, it’s still a viable tool for high-level wireframing.

You can provide a page description, or user flows yourself, but the best way to utilize ChatGPT is to leverage its conversational nature and build on top of previous prompts, such as the one above about generating user flows:

Generate a wireframe layout for the following user flow [example of the user flow]

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Generate Wireframe Layout for User Flow 3

If you find ChatGPT’s outputs lacking, you can ask it to expand or add more details to the parts that interest you the most. For instance, I thought that the second screen of the wireframe could use more details; it was as simple as asking ChatGPT to add more:

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Add More Details to Wireframe 2

Now, you can choose the most relevant parts of the proposed layout and get straight into designing. Or if you’d like, you can pop this text into another AI tool to generate a wireframe and save yourself even more time.

Suggest colors, typography, and other design elements

There’s hardly a deeper rabbit hole in UX design than setting up the color palette, typography, grid , font sizes, and other design system fundamentals.

If you are one of those designers who gets decisions paralysis and tends to spend too much time on this step, consider delegating this task to ChatGPT and just move forward. You can always revisit those choices later if you are not fully satisfied.

For example, say I need a color palette before I can think further about my design. Here’s the prompt I’d give ChatGPT:

Suggest a color palette for [type of product] targeting [user persona].

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Suggest Color Palette

Or here’s another:

Suggest typography for [type of product] targeting [user persona].

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Suggest Typography

While I wouldn’t delegate the visual direction to ChatGPT altogether, it’s a great way to get unstuck. If you still have some spare time after the designs are done, nothing prevents you from further experimenting with different font pairs and color schemes.

Ideate product improvements

UX design is not only about making pretty UI and choosing the right colors but also about building products that users actually love. Whether you are tasked with a more strategic challenge or want to proactively step up, ChatGPT can be a great tool for ideating the next areas of focus.

Describe briefly

  • what type of product you are building
  • what platform you are designing for
  • what objective you are trying to achieve

and odds are GPT will give you a healthy dose of inspiration.

I’m trying to [goal] in [application and platform description]. Give me some [goal] tips.

Ideating Product Improvements with ChatGPT

Although I wouldn’t expect innovation from an NLM, you don’t always need to innovate to build a loveable product.

Prepare meaningful checklists

If you are designing a particular element of the product for the first time, it’s easy to miss some crucial details. In those cases, checklists are a blessing. Give ChatGPT some context, including what you are designing and what product you are designing for, and ask it for a list of things you should consider including:

I’m designing a [element] for [type of product]. Create a checklist of what I should consider including.

Preparing Meaningful Checklists with ChatGPT

It serves both as a great double-checking tool and an inspiration source.

Workshop agenda inspiration

Stuck preparing your next workshop? Or maybe you are just looking for a fresher approach to some exercises?

Consider asking ChatGPT to prepare a few examples of agenda for you. Explain these briefly:

  • What workshop you are leading
  • How big the audience is
  • The objective of the workshop
  • Your expected time limit

Enjoy a ready-to-go agenda:

I need to prepare [type of workshop] for [audience]. The goal is to [workshop goal]. The timebox is [time limit]. Recommend a sample agenda for the workshop.

Workshop Agenda Inspiration ChatGPT

Keep in mind, however, that ChatGPT still has issues with understanding the sense of time. You can notice in the sample prompt that the agenda is actually longer than the expected two-hour timebox. Still, I like this prompt because the meat (the flow of the meeting) is there, and I can adjust the exact timing of particular sections myself.

Using ChatGPT to generate content for UX design

Lorem Ipsum placeholders should be banned. They often lead to:

  • A mismatch between the final content and the page layout
  • A hard time evaluating the design direction without actual content
  • Less compelling design pitches

While designers are rarely the ones responsible for the final content (although that’s sometimes the case), using realistic placeholders will maximize the chances that your design choices will match well once the final content is ready.

Ideating headlines

Headlines evoke emotions in users and set a tone for the whole communication. Ideally, you should push your clients and stakeholders to provide you with this piece of content (or at least the first draft) upfront.

Otherwise, an AI-generated placeholder is still better than a Lorem ipsum placeholder. I recommend asking for a few headline recommendations to get a bigger picture of which direction the final communication might take. Here’s how you can ask GPT:

I’ll provide you with a product description and target buyer persona. Please generate 10 examples of headlines for the landing page. Product description: [1–2 sentences describing the value proposition] Target persona: [quick persona description]

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Suggest Headlines

Choose the one that feels right, and make sure your design and page layout work well with it. It’ll greatly increase the chances your design will work with the final copy.

Generating placeholders for content

Some layouts are content-heavy. Think of an ecommerce product page, for example.

On ecommerce sites, product descriptions, buyer reviews, and other dynamic content types make ~50–80 percent of the page. Lorem ipsum placeholders would make it very difficult to evaluate the layout structure and design choices.

Instead, invest a few minutes to generate realistic placeholder content with ChatGPT to get a better sense of how your design would perform:

Create a sample [type of content] [specific example] for [type of product]. The [type of content] should be [desired length].

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Write Sample Descriptions

Rapid translations

If you are designing for multiple languages, I always recommend checking if your design works for the longest language you support.

For example, German words are significantly longer than their English counterparts, so buttons that work fine with English copy might look completely broken after translations. Feed your copy (whether final or placeholder) to ChatGPT and then back to your design files to see if it still looks fine or requires revision:

Sample prompt : Please translate the text I’ll provide below to [desired language].

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Translate Descriptions

My personal rule of thumb: if your copy works with German, it should work with most languages.

Non-critical microcopy

While I strongly discourage relying on ChatGPT to write copy for you, and in most cases, you should use it purely for ideation purposes, there are some use cases that you can delegate fully.

Let’s take error messages as an example. Although some might indeed be critical, most classical errors don’t need innovative copywriting, so why not just ask ChatGPT?

Recommend copywriting for [placement] that appears when [context].

Non-Critical Microcopy with ChatGPT

You can then iterate on the go, depending on your needs:

Clean up Microcopy with ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a faster alternative to simply googling examples for the most common microcopies.

Using ChatGPT to conduct market research

I have a somewhat love-and-hate relationship with market research. On the one hand, it’s a great way to get inspiration, establish benchmarks, and stay on top of the industry. On the other hand, it’s often a time-consuming, repetitive, and somewhat boring activity, usually consisting of repeatedly reviewing Google’s search results.

Although ChatGPT won’t fully replace market research, it can give you a great starting point and help you narrow down further research.

N.B., although ChatGPT states that its database was last updated in September 2021, it’s also proven it knows more recent facts. Regardless, treat ChatGPT outputs as a starting point rather than a definite source of truth, or use a plugin that helps ChatGPT browse the modern web.

Identifying competitors

ChatGPT can help you identify the main players in a specific market segment. Simply ask about the most popular products in a particular segment. You can later dig deeper into specific competitors with subsequent prompts on your own research:

What are the most popular [type of product] in [market segment]?

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Suggest Most Popular Homework Websites

If you are working on an established product, you can ask ChatGPT directly whom it considers to be [your product name] competitors.

Analyzing competitors’ products

Once you’ve identified your key competitors, you can follow up with more specific questions. It’ll help you get up to speed quickly and decide where to focus your further research:

Analyze the user experience of [web link]/[app store link]

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Analyze Quizlet UX

Some supplementary prompts I like to use include:

  • How would you improve [link]?
  • What do users say about [link]?
  • Perform a SWOT analysis of [link]

Observing trends in a specific industry

Identifying relevant trends can help you shape your design direction and ideate interesting solutions to build your competitive analysis:

What are the main trends in the [industry] in [market]?

ChatGPT Prompt and Response to Highlight Main Trends in EdTech

Preparing user interview questions

The quality of your user interview insights depends on the quality of the questions you ask. You can use ChatGPT to help you ideate and choose potential questions to ask during the interview to make the whole scripting process significantly smoother.

I’m preparing a script for a user interview. The goal of the interview is to [objective]. The product is [product category]. The target group is [target segment]. Help me prepare a list of questions I could ask.

User interview questions script

Just remember to give enough context:

  • What’s the goal of the interview?
  • What’s the type of product you develop?
  • Who are you going to talk to?

Using ChatGPT to learn design skills and tools

Whether you are just starting to learn UX design or are already an experienced designer trying to learn a new tool or niche, ChatGPT can be your best teacher.

Learning how to use design tools

You will have to learn a brand new design tool a few times in your career. Let’s face it: not only does not every company use Figma, but new design tools will also appear on the market over time.

Instead of watching (usually too long) video tutorials whenever you are stuck, you can ask ChatGPT a simple question exactly the same way you would ask an experienced colleague:

What’s the best way to [task you want to accomplish] in [design tool]?

ChatGPT Prompt and Response of Figma Best Practices

If you want to get down the rabbit hole of learning a new tool, you can also leverage ChatGPT to get the list of valuable learning resources:

Give me examples of specific resources for learning [tool] for someone who used [similar tool] in the past.

ChatGPT Prompt and Response of Figma Learning Resources

Learning design best practices

If you are designing something for the first time, you should start by accustoming yourself to established best practices. It’s valuable both as the inspiration at the beginning of the design process and as a sanity check after you’ve designed the screen:

What are the best practices for designing [component]?

ChatGPT Prompt and Response of Checkout Best Practices

Even if you are already quite senior in your UX design journey, reviewing the best practices every now and then might be a helpful refresher.

Planning next steps based on received feedback

In an ideal world, every time you receive feedback from your peers or managers, you’d also get some tips on the next steps. In reality, though, it’s rarely the case. More often than not, we get a generic comment about what we could improve, and we are left to deal with it ourselves.

If you’ve just received feedback and you are not sure what to do with it, try consulting with ChatGPT!

I’m a [role]. I received a feedback that [feedback]. Please recommend relevant [next steps/courses/books/conferences/etc.] to improve in the area.

Ideas from Feedback in ChatGPT

Although ChatGPT isn’t always up-to-date, it still does a decent job recommending relevant resources.

Other use cases for ChatGPT

Let me cover some additional ChatGPT use cases for UX designers that didn’t fit into the previous main categories.

Communicating with clients

Client communication can sometimes be exhausting, especially if you need to be politically correct while boiling inside. What I love about ChatGPT is how it can work as a filter between the client and me. I can just feed cold facts into the model, and it returns a polite message that, in most cases, is ready for delivery:

Help me write a [tone] [type of message] to a client. I need to [brief description of the message]

Communicating with the Client in ChatGPT

The model tends to return excessively long and robust messages. If you need the message to be more precise and to the point, follow up by asking it to summarize the message.

Summarizing

Speaking of summarizing, no article on ChatGPT can get by without mentioning this powerful capability. As some examples, you can use ChatGPT to summarize:

  • Articles you found on the internet
  • Messages you receive from clients or users
  • Interviews you conducted
Summarize the [type of content] below, focusing on [area of focus].

Example: summarize the article below focusing on actions a UX designer can take to improve loading speeds.

Content Summary with ChatGPT

Since you have to paste the whole content into the chat and it does have a character limit, if you need to summarize a longer piece of content, you’ll need to split it into a few smaller prompts. Luckily, in most cases, it doesn’t really affect the quality of the response.

Closing thoughts

ChatGPT is a powerful UX design tool that can be used for ideation, generating placeholder content, doing market research, learning new things, and much more.

Given current job market conditions and ever-increasing needs for speed and efficiency, proficiency in using ChatGPT might tip the scale of whether you will be the one getting the promotion or that new job offer.

The best part is it’s a pretty straightforward tool. As you saw in the examples, interacting with the ChatGPT doesn’t differ much from talking to a coworker. You don’t need a perfect design prompt; just get started and add follow-up questions if needed.

However, keep in mind that ChatGPT is not a one-tool-fits-it-all solution. There are other, more specialized AI tools on the market, such as:

  • Visily for turning pen and paper prototypes into visual ones
  • Attention Insight for enhanced usability testing
  • Uizard for turning text prompts into actual UI design

I’m not saying you should know them all. Rather, whenever you face a new challenge at work, remember there’s probably a dedicated AI solution that can help you reach the solution twice as fast.

UX Case Study: Applying ChatGPT Alike Generative AI in Banking

Alex

Generative AI solutions such as ChatGPT could fuel new types of products in banking, more personalized and more connected to users, but integrating innovative technologies often causes complications in terms of user experience. And here, the methods of financial UX design are very effective, as they help to imagine the unimaginable and create a digital solution, focusing on users' needs. Visionaries from BELLA and technical masterminds from LivePerson approached UXDA with a mission to infuse love and empathy into finance through a conversational AI banking app. This case study explores our actual work with generative AI banking design.

Client: Leading Conversational AI Company Enters Banking

As a leading provider of AI-powered customer engagement solutions, LivePerson has established a reputation for pushing the limits of human-computer interaction through their cutting-edge conversational solutions. In 2022, Fast Company ranked LivePerson #1 on its World's Most Innovative Companies in Artificial Intelligence list, as well as #21 on its overall World's Most Innovative Companies list.

Their flagship offering, the Conversational Cloud platform, leverages generative AI and machine learning to facilitate nearly a billion conversational interactions per month for a diverse range of industries and popular brands. This technology is akin to the popular GPT-3-based ChatGPT chatbot, which allows users to engage in human-like conversations with an AI.

In recognition of the tremendous potential of this technology, LivePerson debuted their Conversational Cloud in 2020, enabling brands to establish meaningful and personalized connections with their customers.

Their aim was to bring this innovative experience to the banking industry as well by creating a conversational banking service that leverages technology to replicate the human connection through online communication channels, such as chat, text and voice messaging.

Challenge: Creating Never-Before-Seen Conversational AI Banking from Scratch

As the world becomes increasingly accustomed to interacting with AI-powered interfaces and chatbots, the bar for usability in products has been raised. The team at LivePerson, in collaboration with the creators of Buddybank, dared to become the pioneers of conversational banking and wanted to make their product feel revolutionary in order to truly stand out. They sought out a UX partner who was bold enough to help them create and execute a design vision for the innovative conversational banking service, BELLA.

Conversational banking is the use of natural language interactions, such as voice commands or text-based chat, to access banking services. This can include things like checking account balances, making payments, and getting financial advice through a chatbot or virtual assistant. The goal of generative AI powered conversational banking is to make banking more convenient and accessible for customers by allowing them to interact with their bank in a way that feels more natural and less formal.

Conversational banking, such as one powered by ChatGPT alike technology, provides several benefits:

Convenience

Customers can access banking services at any time and from any location, using natural language interactions such as voice commands or text-based chat.

Personalization

Conversational banking can provide a more personalized experience for customers by using customer data to offer tailored financial advice and recommendations.

Transactions can be completed quickly and efficiently through conversational banking, reducing the need for customers to wait in line or on the phone.

Self-service

Customers can use conversational banking to perform a wide range of tasks, such as checking account balances, making payments, and reporting lost cards, without the need for assistance from a bank employee.

Improved customer service

A conversational banking interface can help to reduce the number of customer service requests by providing quick and accurate information to customers.

Cost savings

Conversational banking can reduce the costs of running call centers and physical branches by allowing customers to perform many tasks independently.

BELLA’s founders aimed to design their app as the heart and soul of their brand, to fulfill their mission and bring a breath of fresh air to the industry. Given that the banking industry eschews emotions, seeing them as noise that gets in the way of settlements, the BELLA team challenged that legacy. They set out to bridge the emotional gap and break down the barriers of traditional user experience models by treating users like family members.

In 2020, they challenged the UXDA team to create a never-before-seen banking interface that seamlessly connects the ChatGPT-like interaction and full-range retail banking services. After the initial research, we understood that this was one of the first attempts to create full-featured, AI-powered conversational banking.

chatgpt ux case study

Approach: Going Beyond Banking and Chatting Patterns

Mobile banking apps are typically built upon a series of menus and buttons, but the BELLA team required something entirely different: full-range banking services through a conversational interface ─ something similar to the ChatGPT experience available today. But, unlike the usual chat services, they did not want messaging clouds, standard navigation or other familiar elements; they wanted something fundamentally different.

With the UXDA human-centered design approach, we have focused on understanding the psychology of digital conversations and the ways in which people use it to exchange ideas and information. The research helped to find a way for designing the banking app's interface so users can interact with it more naturally and intuitively.

Creating an unconventional ChatGPT-like conversational interface required a thorough understanding of the psychological patterns of conversations and how, why and when people use them in the digital environment to achieve their goals. Conversations in digital services eliminate the manual work of searching for answers by tapping through interfaces, because often users are not aware if the answer even exists within the service.

Our approach began with ideating and testing three solutions for the conversational interactions: text-to-text, voice input  and a hybrid approach .

The text-to-text conversation concept involved using a single screen with an open keyboard for users to type their thoughts and receive text-based responses. This approach of using text-to-text alone had the potential to be minimalistic and simple, but it also presented several challenges, including high cognitive load, difficulty creating emotional connections and lack of discoverability for first-time users.

We also discussed using speech-to-text technology for voice input, as voice assistants have become increasingly popular. Users expressed interest in this feature. However, that alone would not be viable for use in public or professional settings.

Ultimately, the hybrid approach, which combined text and voice input, simple navigation and visual elements, proved to be the most successful. It allowed for the creation of emotional connections, increased discoverability, minimized cognitive load and ensured usability in a variety of settings.

Artificial intelligence in the service remembers and recognizes users as they are interacting with the app. It gets to know them over time as a friend and is therefore able to provide smart clues to the most frequent or recent searches, or prepare personalized answers.

Conversational Banking Use Cases: Implementing ChatGPT Alike Experience into Finance

By harnessing generative AI banking technology to understand user intent and provide personalized, contextual responses, the conversational banking app set out to create a deeper emotional connection with banking users. Our client's main priority was to treat all customers as human beings, regardless of their wealth status.

This philosophy is reflected in the service design DNA, which aimed to provide ChatGPT alike experience through the main conversational banking use cases to reduce the stress, fear and frustration that often accompany dealing with finances. The BELLA team wanted their app to become a seamless and enjoyable part of users' daily lifestyles.

To create this experience, we integrated conversational aspects across many product features, like transactions, finance and card management, investing and concierge service. As a result, we got a conversational interface similar to ChatGPT but completely focused on full-range banking services. Let's look at it in more detail.

When we asked ChatGPT about the conversational banking use cases in which technology like ChatGPT could be used, we got the following list.

Here are ten common use cases for ChatGPT in banking:

Account inquiries

Customers can use chatbots to check their account balances, transaction history, and other account-related information.

Fund transfers

Customers can initiate fund transfers to other accounts or make payments to merchants using chatbots.

Loan applications

Chatbots can help customers apply for loans and guide them through the application process.

Credit score monitoring

Chatbots can help customers monitor their credit scores and provide tips on how to improve them.

Investment advice

Chatbots can provide investment advice and help customers make informed investment decisions.

Fraud prevention

Chatbots can help banks prevent fraud by monitoring customer transactions and detecting any suspicious activity.

Customer service

Chatbots can provide quick and efficient customer service by answering common questions and resolving simple issues.

Account management

Chatbots can help customers manage their accounts, such as setting up automatic payments, updating personal information, and more.

Insurance claims

Chatbots can assist customers in filing insurance claims and provide information on the claims process.

Financial planning

Chatbots can help customers with financial planning, such as creating a budget or setting financial goals.

Well, it is pretty good. Now let's take a look at the use cases in which we designed conversational banking for our product.

360-degree View Dashboard

BELLA's dashboard is designed to provide a 360-degree view of users' finances. The inspiration for this feature comes from traveling. When taking 360-degree photos, you can get a full immersive viewpoint from all angles of the places where you have been. Similarly, this dashboard offers users a comprehensive overview of their finances with just a simple swipe.

The main screen displays contextual information and notifications, while swiping left allows users to access pinned conversations with their personal banking concierge as well as summaries of all the previous conversation topics. Swiping right provides a more traditional banking experience, allowing users to view their accounts.

Concierge Service

BELLA transforms the traditional financial experience by introducing customers to a generative AI banking concierge. A ChatGPT-like banking and lifestyle concierge guides them through their banking needs, while providing an intuitive and user-friendly way to access and explore banking services through a mobile app.

In cases in which users need more complex guidance or elaborate information, they get automatically shifted from the AI banking chat service to a conversation with a real person from customer service who is ready to offer help in a matter of seconds.

Easy Transactions with Sentence Patterns

Users can easily initiate banking transactions through the ChatGPT or Siri-like request by simply saying or typing in the needed action, for example, “send $200 to my mom.” The app processes the request, confirms with the user and executes it.

In the case whereby a user for some reason doesn't initiate action through the conversation, the app offers two other options:

1) to input keywords like "pay," "payments" or "transfer," and a payment form will appear, or

2) to receive a subtle tip that informs users how to use full sentences to initiate a payment.

To enhance the user experience, a predefined statement is launched when a keyword is triggered, allowing users to learn the sentence pattern for future use.

chatgpt ux case study

Card Management

Users can conveniently manage their cards through the app. They can block or report a lost card, change their PIN or turn on contactless payments.

chatgpt ux case study

Personalized and Unconventional Savings

The app allows users to create savings accounts through ChatGPT-like natural language interactions.

chatgpt ux case study

Seamless Investing

The app provides users with the ability to make investments directly from the dialog box in the chat.

Users can easily initiate and track investments without the need to switch between multiple applications. This seamless experience allows users to make informed decisions and manage their investments in real time.

Safe for Digital Assets

The Safebox feature in BELLA is like a typical safe in banks but only for digital assets. It allows users to store personal photos, documents, access cards and other sensitive information in a secure and encrypted manner.

As people increasingly use smartphones to store important information, there is a growing need for added security measures. To address this, BELLA implemented a digital safe within the app with advanced security measures. This allows users to easily access and locate their digital assets through the app's conversational interface.

Finding Design Inspiration Across the Globe

When designing the user experience for this generative AI financial product, our goal was to evoke feelings of futurism, curiosity and innovation. We wanted to create an emotional and philosophy-driven design that exudes sophistication and balance.

To achieve a unique result, we drew inspiration from BELLA's visionaries. They sought to infuse the product with the colors of a Los Angeles sunrise, the ambience of Florence's Duomo Cathedral and even the peacefulness of Japanese Zen gardens. By drawing inspiration from outside the banking world, together we were able to bring fresh perspectives to the digital product and create a truly unique user experience.

This may include features such as voice commands, screen reader support, and keyboard shortcuts to ensure that all customers can use the chatbot effectively.

By considering these UX requirements, banks can create a ChatGPT-powered banking that provides a seamless, effective, and engaging experience for their customers.

What problems arise when using conversational AI in banking products?

While using conversational AI in banking products can provide several benefits, there are also several potential problems that can arise. By understanding these potential problems, banks can better anticipate and address any issues that may arise when using conversational AI technology in their banking products, and take proactive measures to ensure that their chatbot delivers an effective and secure customer experience. Here are some of the most common issues:

1. Language Barriers

Conversational AI may struggle to understand customers with different accents, dialects, or language variations, which can result in misinterpretations or incorrect responses. This can be a particular problem for global banks with a diverse customer base.

2. Misunderstandings and Errors

Conversational AI can misinterpret or misunderstand customer queries, leading to incorrect responses, which can result in customer frustration, confusion, or even financial losses.

3. Lack of Personal Touch

Conversational AI in banking may lack the human touch that many customers prefer, making them feel uncomfortable or uneasy when discussing sensitive financial topics.

4. Security Risks

Conversational AI in finance may pose security risks if not designed and implemented properly. For example, if the chatbot is not securely designed, it may accidentally disclose sensitive customer information or become a target for cyber attacks.

5. Integration Challenges

Integrating Conversational AI with existing banking systems and processes can be challenging and time-consuming. Issues such as data integration, API limitations, and system compatibility can arise, leading to technical difficulties and delays.

6. Maintenance and Updating

Conversational AI in financial services requires regular maintenance and updating to ensure that it remains up-to-date, accurate, and effective. This can be time-consuming and expensive, requiring significant investment in technical resources and expertise.

7. Legal and Compliance Challenges

Conversational AI needs to comply with various legal and regulatory requirements related to data privacy, security, and financial compliance. Failure to meet these standards can lead to legal and financial penalties.

8. Cultural and Social Factors

Conversational AI may not be well-suited to certain cultural or social contexts, which can result in a negative customer experience. For example, some cultures may view automated chatbots as impersonal or disrespectful, while others may be uncomfortable discussing financial matters over chat.

9. Ethical Concerns

Conversational AI raises various ethical concerns, such as issues related to bias, privacy, and transparency. For example, chatbots may exhibit biases towards certain groups of customers, or they may inadvertently reveal sensitive customer information, resulting in ethical concerns.

10. Limited Domain Knowledge

Conversational AI may lack specific domain knowledge of the banking industry, making it difficult for the chatbot to understand complex financial queries, regulations, or nuances that are specific to banking. This can result in inaccurate or incomplete responses, which may frustrate customers.

Only by carefully considering these potential problems and taking proactive steps to mitigate them, banks can ensure that they derive the full benefits of Conversational AI while avoiding the potential pitfalls. This requires a combination of technical expertise, legal compliance, and user-centered design principles to create a banking product that delivers a secure, accurate, and effective customer experience.

Industrial Design Case Study: Pruners with Better UX

Tapping user-centric insights to drive design innovation.

Industrial design consultancy Sundberg-Ferar was hired by Ames True Temper to design an innovative pruning tool. The firm did heavy research, which allowed them to spot "compensatory behaviors that signaled inherent design deficiencies." The result is a small but impactful change to the form, which you'll see below.

chatgpt ux case study

"The team cross-referenced ideal user experiences with competitors' vulnerabilities to help identify uncontested marketspaces. Research revealed opportunities to improve the ergonomics of the grips while at the same time creating a unique visual element (the "finger ring") that distinguishes these premium pruners at the point of purchase. Versions for both men and women were designed to optimize comfort, addressing differences in hand and finger size."

chatgpt ux case study

"Through hours of user observations and interviews with professional landscapers, master gardeners and amateur gardeners, the team consistently noted handling difficulties with the pruning tools being used, and compensatory behaviors that signaled inherent design deficiencies."

chatgpt ux case study

"In response to these insights, we focused on incorporating unique design elements that allowed the user to maintain greater control of the tools and delivered enhanced handling security."

Leveraging chatgpt for qualitative data analysis: a case study on data management practices among computer vision scholars.

Zonghan Lei , Purdue University Follow Wei Zakharov , Purdue University Follow Yung-Hsiang Lu , Purdue University

Lei, Z., Zakharov, W., & Lu, Y. (2024). Leveraging ChatGPT for qualitative data analysis: A case study on data management practices among computer vision scholars. Presented at the 2024 Teaching and Learning with AI conference, Orlando, FL.

Qualitative data analysis plays a crucial role in deriving meaningful insights from research data. However, conventional software tools like NVivo present challenges such as high costs and complexity (Dalkin, et al., 2021). This study advocates for integrating ChatGPT, an AI technology, into qualitative data analysis workflows to overcome these challenges. Focusing on the data management practices of Computer Vision professors, the study investigates how ChatGPT enhances human analysis by streamlining processes and uncovering hidden patterns within datasets. Structured interviews were conducted with six participants from research institutions (R1). The transcripts underwent manual scrutiny to identify recurring themes and patterns. Subsequently, the results were compared with ChatGPT analysis to evaluate its efficacy in qualitative data analysis. The findings illustrate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in augmenting traditional qualitative data analysis methods. By leveraging AI capabilities, ChatGPT facilitates a more efficient and comprehensive analysis, enabling researchers to uncover nuanced insights that may have been overlooked through manual analysis alone. This case study contributes to the ongoing discourse on AI's role in research, demonstrating how ChatGPT can enhance qualitative data analysis and drive advancements in academic research methodologies. The study also revealed certain limitations of AI as an analysis tool, such as potential inaccuracies, biases, and as well as ethical concerns. Therefore, while AI aids in analysis, manual intervention remains crucial to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness in research methodologies.

AIが道案内? 全盲のeスポーツ選手がChatGPTをテスト

9/1(日) 12:05 配信

AFPBB News

(c)AFPBB News

(c)AFPBB News
