Description

The PhD program in Behavior Analysis is a 68-credit doctoral program designed to train and position qualified behavior analysts to make significant contributions to the science and to the community. Coursework includes topics such as behavioral assessment, descriptive analysis, demonstration of functional relations, measurement and intervention tactics, data display and interpretation, selection of target behaviors and goals, family issues, legal and ethical issues and crisis management.

Requirements for Entry into Program

Candidates must have a Master's degree or higher in Behavioral Education, Applied Behavior Analysis or a related field, including psychology, education, or special education. Additional requirements include official transcripts from all coursework completed since high school, three letters of recommendation, a résumé, a statement of purpose, an analytical writing sample, an interview, and official GRE general test scores.

Degree Requirements

This program requires 68 semester hours, the equivalent of 17 courses. Students may enroll on either a full- or part-time basis beginning in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

Top 15 PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis

Earning a PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis can prepare students for careers in academia, research, or clinical practice. ABA professionals may work with children with disabilities and their families, teach at the university level, or conduct independent research. The PhD is considered a terminal degree in the field. Admission to ABA PhD programs is highly selective and competitive. Programs feature:

Admission criteria varies by program, but some programs are open to students with only a bachelor’s degree.  Others may require students to have a master’s in ABA and experience working with individuals with disabilities. Some programs are offered online, but most are traditional brick and mortar programs. We considered both types when creating this ranking of the top 15 PhD in applied behavior analysis.

We created this ranking of the best PhD behavior analysis programs to showcase some of the top degrees in the country. We looked to the National Center for Education Statistics to find schools offering graduate level programs in ABA. We narrowed our focus to schools offering a PhD. We then awarded points based on factors like student/faculty ratio, average graduate tuition rate and whether they were ABAI accredited. We felt ABAI accreditation was important since it is an indicator of a quality training program.

Description

Simmons’s Behavior Analysis program prepares students for leadership roles in the implementation, evaluation, and administration of applied behavioral analytic principles and methods. Our rigorous, practice-based curriculum focuses on contemporary research and the full range of applications of behavior analytic principles, across various domains, populations, and clinical practice. Throughout the program, students will examine the concepts and methods of applied behavior analysis within the following areas: Functional assessment and analysis, Ethics, Evidence-based instructional methods, Verbal behavior, Experimental analysis of behavior, Experimental design and research, and Supervision.

Students have two degree options – the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) and the Master of Science (M.S.). The Ed.S. degree program is an advanced graduate degree that provides a student who currently holds a master’s degree with an area of educational specialization. The M.S. meets the educational needs of an individual who holds a bachelor’s degree and is seeking a master’s degree. The program of study is 42 credits credits for students admitted to the program prior to the Spring, 2023 term; the program of study is 40 credits for students admitted to the program on or after the Spring, 2023 term.

The M.S and Ed.S. program in Behavior Analysis is a Verified Course Sequence and meets the coursework requirements for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) examination. The on-campus Master of Science in Behavior Analysis program is accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI).

Learning Outcomes

Students acquire and demonstrate complex and sophisticated behavior analytic skills that prepare them for clinical practice.

The curriculum meets the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s® degree and coursework requirements to apply for the BCBA® exam.

The campus program is accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. 

The curriculum includes experiential learning courses to develop clinical and research skills.

The curriculum satisfies the requirements of licensure in Massachusetts as an Applied Behavior Analyst.

Requirements for entry into program

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. All grade point averages are considered, but a B (3.0) average or higher is preferred. It is desirable that applicants have a balanced liberal arts education on the undergraduate level with evidence of successful completion of natural science courses. Additionally, the Admission Committee looks for relevant experience and a commitment to the science and profession of behavior analysis and its values.

The M.S. and Ed.S. degrees in Behavior Analysis require 42 credits and students will complete supervised fieldwork experiential learning courses for 5 terms for students admitted to the program prior to the Spring, 2023 term. Note: Practicum courses are required for students admitted on or after the Spring, 2023 term. Students complete two 4-credit Practicum courses during the 4th and 5th semester of the program to meet the experiential learning requirements to graduate. Students must secure a worksite that satisfies the program standards and the Association for Behavior Analysis International accreditation standards for experiential learning. The worksite and worksite clinical supervisors are vetted and approved by Simmons University faculty, at the discretion of the faculty, before a student may begin Practicum.

The Practicum courses are 4 credit hours each term, for a total of 8 credit hours. Students must work at a University-approved site completing behavior analytic activities under the supervision of a University-approved clinical supervisor for a minimum of 20 hours per month (45 hours per semester). Students must complete 90 behavior analytic experience hours to be eligible to graduate. Students meet weekly with their practicum instructor, and complete experiential learning activities and projects to develop clinical and research skills. Across the two Practicum courses, students will also complete a thesis equivalent research project.

Prior to registering for Practicum courses, MS or EdS Campus Program students complete a 0-credit Practicum Orientation course during term 3 of the program. The Orientation helps prepare students for the Practicum experience and familiarizes students with program requirements.

Licensure, certification, etc.

This program is intended to lead to exam eligibility for the BCBA® examination, and not an individual certificate or license. Some, but not all, states license behavioral analysts, with name of license and requirements varying by state. This table provides a state by state breakdown of comparable requirements, including a determination of eligibility for the national certifying exam. This information provided is designed as a baseline determination of whether the program meets national exam eligibility requirements and not individual state specific requirements. Specific state licenses may be more applicable and/or require additional standards. Exam eligibility, licensure requirements, and appropriate pathways are subject to change and may differ based on individual student backgrounds, including coursework taken outside the scope of the program. Students should do their own due diligence and determine the appropriate pathway and license type for themselves.

Mentoring and Supervision

Note: Mentoring and Supervision courses are required for students admitted prior the Spring, 2023 term.

Mentoring and Supervision courses (BEHV/O 451-455; five 2-credit courses) provide individualized and group supervision to students using the basic principles of behavior analysis in the classroom or work setting. They fulfill the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s® requirements for completion of supervision under the Supervised Fieldwork category. Students must work an average of 28.5 hours per week at an approved site under the clinical supervision of an approved worksite BCBA® throughout the mentoring program. Worksite responsibilities include direct and clinical service provision to human clients for whom behavior analytic services are appropriate. Per BACB® standards, no more than 40% of the hours worked may be restricted activities (i.e., direct services); a minimum of 60% of the experience hours must be completed under the category of unrestricted clinical work (as defined in the BACB® supervised fieldwork standards). Clinical responsibilities include designing and/or monitoring behavior analytic programs, overseeing implementation of programs by others, conducting behavior analytic assessments and analyses, training other service providers to implement behavior analytic programming, and data analysis. Students must attend weekly individual and group supervision sessions with university-appointed BCBA® faculty mentors, for a total of 21 supervised hours per term. Students must receive direct observation from their assigned mentor. Each term, students must complete a total of 400 experience hours.

BEHAVIORANALYSIS@SIMMONS

In order to enroll in BehaviorAnalysis@Simmons, applicants must have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The following materials must be submitted in order to apply for the program:

  • Completed online application form
  • Current résumé
  • One essay explaining your reasons for pursuing a Master of Science in Behavior Analysis, including a discussion of the intellectual and professional goals you hope to achieve
  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended, regardless of whether a degree was earned
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic references
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores, if applicable
  • Nonrefundable application fee of $75 (Fee is reduced to $45 if application is submitted on or before the priority deadline)
  • GRE scores are not required for admission, but will be accepted if the applicant chooses to submit them

Application fee waivers are available for applicants affiliated with non-profit organizations such as: City Year, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and Teach for America, and military personnel, veterans, and their spouses. Please contact your admission counselor to request instructions for obtaining the fee waiver.

In the event that the Admission Committee needs more information to review an application, an applicant may be required to participate in an interview with the committee.

In 500 words, please cover:

  • Goals in Behavior Analysis : Describe your professional and intellectual goals and the relationship of the degree program to these goals.
  • Educational Background and Preparation:  Describe your understanding of the field of Behavior Analysis, your interest in the field, and how your academic background has prepared you for this program. If your cumulative undergraduate GPA was below 3.0 or you struggled in any academic coursework resulting in lower grades, please reflect upon your academic experience in your essay.
  • Relevant Experiences : Address any gaps in employment and describe any relevant volunteer, full-time, or part-time work experience that you have.

Transcripts

Sealed, official academic transcripts must be received by mail from all postsecondary institutions you have attended, regardless of whether or not a degree was earned . This includes community colleges, institutions you may have attended as a non-degree student, or schools where you enrolled but withdrew from classes. Many schools issue transcripts electronically, either through their own web services or through vendors. All coursework from institutions outside of the United States must be reviewed by an evaluation service such as  World Education Services ,  International Education Research Foundation ,  Education Credential Evaluation , or  AACRAO International Education Services . Evaluations for study abroad coursework are not required if all course titles and grades are reflected on a US transcript. Please allow for additional time in the application process to have all transcripts evaluated by these organizations. Please note that course-by-course evaluations are required.

Letters of Recommendation

Your application must include at least two professional or academic letters of recommendation that have been written within one year of the application submission date. Your recommenders must be able to speak to your verbal and written communication skills, intellectual ability, capacity for critical analysis, and personal initiative. When you add recommenders via the online application, an email notification is sent to your recommenders. They can complete the recommendation online.

Letters must be from professional (e.g., a supervisor or manager) or academic (such as faculty, advisors, or a department head) sources. Recommendations will not be accepted from friends, family members, personal counselors or therapists, co-workers, or your clergy.

TOEFL or IELTS Scores

If English is not your first language, you are required to submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score report, demonstrating satisfactory English language proficiency.

Please note that the TOEFL or IELTS is not required from applicants who have earned either a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. postsecondary institution or from a postsecondary institution recognized by the Ministry of Education in an English-speaking country.

Simmons University's Master of Science in Behavior Analysis campus-based program is perfect for students looking to enter the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), become Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®) and make a difference in the lives of others. BCBAs® are known for their work in improving quality of life, communication, and learning outcomes, particularly for neurodivergent individuals. However, BCBAs® may also practice in the other areas, including animal training, organizational behavior management, higher education, and behavioral medicine, among others.

Our campus-based Master of Science in Behavior Analysis program is one of the few master’s programs across the world that are accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI),and was the first master's program in New England to be accredited by ABAI. Our program outcome data are reported annually. Our campus-based Master of Science program meets the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s degree and coursework requirements to apply for the BCBA® exam under Pathway 1 (accredited programs). Our curriculum offers exceptional preparation for the BCBA® exam — with on-campus students achieving a first-attempt pass rate of 89% in 2023, as compared to the national average of 56%.

Simmons’s Behavior Analysis Master’s program prepares students for the BCBA® exam, and for leadership roles in the implementation, evaluation, and administration of applied behavior analytic principles and methods. Our rigorous, practice-based curriculum focuses on contemporary research and the full range of applications of behavior analytic principles, across various domains, populations, and clinical practice. Throughout the program, students will examine the concepts and methods of applied behavior analysis within the following areas: functional assessment and analysis, ethics, evidence-based instructional methods, verbal behavior, experimental analysis of behavior, experimental design and research, and supervision.

What can you do with a Behavior Analysis degree?

The U.S. demand from 2022-2023 for employees credentialed as a BCBA® or BCBA-D® rose 14%, with Massachusetts ranking second nationwide amongst states with the highest demand .Those who relocate to pursue graduate studies at Simmons benefit from a robust job market in Massachusetts with many providers of ABA services.

Upon completing the Simmons Master of Science in Behavior Analysis program and earning BCBA® certification, many of our graduates advance their careers by pursuing supervisory, consultative, and leadership roles in the field. However, with wide practice and research opportunities in both experimental and applied settings, graduates may go on to open a clinical practice or focus their career on a specialized area of practice, such as behavioral medicine, organizational behavior management, animal training, instructional design, or a related field. Details about our Master’s in Behavior Analysis Program

Simmons University’s Behavior Analysis campus-based master’s program can be completed as a Master of Science (MS) or Educational Specialist (EdS) degree, and prepares students to sit for the BCBA® exam. Our Behavior Analysis degree program is completed part-time, with classes available in the evenings to allow flexibility for students working in the field. To earn either the MS or EdS degree, students must complete 40 credits and a thesis research project, which is completed during Practicum courses. To prepare for Practicum, students must begin working by the end of the first semester; we provide support to help students find an appropriate worksite.

ABAI Accreditation Board Masters Seal

The Association for Behavior Analysis International has verified the following courses toward the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® or the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst® examination. Applicants will need to meet additional eligibility requirements and demonstrate they reside in an authorized country before they can be deemed eligible to take the examination.

The M.S. and Ed.S. degrees in Behavior Analysis require 40 credits and students will complete Practicum experiential learning courses for 2 terms for students admitted to the program on or after the Spring, 2023 term.

Students complete two 4-credit Practicum courses during the 4th and 5th semester of the program to meet the experiential learning requirements to graduate. Students must secure a worksite that satisfies the program standards and the Association for Behavior Analysis International accreditation standards for experiential learning. The worksite and worksite clinical supervisors are vetted and approved by Simmons University faculty, at the discretion of the faculty, before a student may begin Practicum.

The Practicum courses are 4 credit hours each term, for a total of 8 credit hours. Students must work at a University-approved site completing behavior analytic activities under the supervision of a University-approved clinical supervisor for a minimum of 20 hours per month (45 hours per semester). Students must complete 90 behavior analytic experience hours to be eligible to graduate. Students meet weekly with their practicum instructor, and complete experiential learning activities and projects to develop clinical and research skills. Across the two Practicum courses, students will also complete a thesis equivalent research project.

Prior to registering for Practicum courses, MS or EdS Campus Program students complete a 0-credit Practicum Orientation course during term 3 of the program. The Orientation helps prepare students for the Practicum experience and familiarizes students with program requirements.

Licensure, certification, etc.

The M.S and Ed.S. program in Behavior Analysis is a Verified Course Sequence and meets the coursework requirements for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) examination. The on-campus Master of Science in Behavior Analysis program is accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI).
