എല്ലാ രാത്രിയിലും കിടക്കുന്നതിനു മുൻപ് നിക് പ്രാർഥിച്ചിരുന്നു, ഉണരുമ്പോഴേക്കു തനിക്ക് കൈകാലുകൾ തരണമേയെന്ന്. എന്നാൽ ആ അത്ഭുതം ഒരിക്കലും നടന്നില്ല. ജീവിതത്തിൽ അത്ഭുതങ്ങൾ സംഭവിക്കില്ലെന്നു തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞതോടെ നിക് സ്വയം അത്ഭുത‌മാകാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

  • Nick Vujicic was born to Dushka and Boris Vujicic in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia. Although he was an otherwise healthy baby, Nick was born without arms and legs; he had no legs, but two small feet, one of which had two toes. Nick has two siblings, Michelle and Aaron. Initially, a Victoria state law prevented Nick from attending a mainstream school due to his physical disability in spite of a lack of mental impairment. However, Vujicic became one of the first physically disabled students integrated into a mainstream school once those laws changed. However, his lack of limbs made him a target for school bullies, and he fell into a severe depression. At age eight, he contemplated suicide and even tried to drown himself in his bathtub at age ten; his love for his parents prevented him from following through. He also stated in his music video "Something More" that God had a plan for his life and he could not bring himself to drown because of this. Nick prayed very hard that God would give him arms and legs, and initially told God that, if his prayer remained unanswered, Nick would not praise him indefinitely. However, a key turning point in his faith came when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began to embrace his lack of limbs. After this, Nick realized his accomplishments could inspire others and became grateful for his life. Nick gradually figured out how to live a full life without limbs, adapting many of the daily skills limbed people accomplish without thinking. Nick writes with two toes on his left foot and a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He knows how to use a computer and can type up to 45 words per minute using the "heel and toe" method. He has also learned to throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get a glass of water, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave, in addition to participating in golf, swimming, and even sky-diving. During secondary school, he was elected captain of MacGregor State in Queensland and worked with the student council on fundraising events for local charities and disability campaigns. Nick Vujicic is a renowned Australian-American Christian evangelist and motivational speaker born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder experienced by the absence of arms and legs.

Although he was born a healthy baby, Nick had no arms and legs. He basically had two small feet, one of which had two toes. Due to his physical disability, Nick delayed attending school as the Victoria state law barred him despite being mentally okay.

However, after the law was changed, he was among the first physically disabled students to join a mainstream school. This was not the end of his troubles. His lack of limbs made him a target for school bullies a situation that had him deeply depressed.

At the age of eight, he thought of suicide and later tried to drown himself in his bathtub at the age of 10. For the love of his parents, Nick gave it a second thought and got himself from the dark scenario.

He always prayed hard that God would give him arms and legs. He even told God that if this prayer went unanswered, then he would not praise him indefinitely.

He gradually had a way to live fully without limbs, adapting many of the daily tasks limbed people accomplish. In this spirit, he learned to write with two toes on his left foot, having a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He even knows how to use a computer and can type up to 45 words within a minute using the “heel and toe” method.

Other essential things that he learned include; throwing a tennis ball, playing drums, getting a glass of water, combing his hair, brushing his teeth, shaving, and answering the phone.

During his high school life, he was even voted captain of MacGregor State in Queensland where he worked with the student council on fundraising events for disability and charity campaigns.

At the age of 17, he started giving talks to his prayer group, a trait that led him to become a seasoned motivational speaker. In addition, he founded Life Without Limbs, a non-profit organization in 2005. later in 2007, Nick founded Attitude is Attitude, a secular motivational speaking company.

Elsewhere, he featured in the short film, The Butterfly Circus. This later had him recognized at the 2010 Method Fest Independent Film Festival as the Best Actor in a short film for his starring role as Will.

In fact, when Vujicic was just 10 years old he considered taking his own life. He attempted to drown himself in his bathtub. But, the thought of how much it would pain his parents to take his own life, on top of the fact that they already had child born with such challenges, caused him to opt out.

Change Of Heart

As Vujicic grew older, he began to see the light. For years he was bitter, and angry at the world and God for his condition. Often times crying out to God, begging him for a miracle, that his arms and legs might reappear.

But, after stumbling across a specific chapter (chapter 9) in the Gospel of John, he had a change of heart. Instead of being angry and upset because of his situation, he started to look at the purpose behind his challenges.

He realized that much of his suffering was due to his attitude , the incorrect assessment of his value, and his perceived limitations. He found a new hope.

Thus, as a teenager he began sharing his message of hope, purpose, and the benefits of resilience with people at his school. He then began giving inspirational speeches at schools and events throughout his community.

  • He started an initiative in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum, called “Attitude Is Altitude.” Under this curriculum, he teaches students about positive changes they need to inculcate in their lives and communities.
  • He is the founder of the non-profit ministry “Life Without Limbs” with its headquarters in Agoura Hills, California.
  • Vujicic released a DVD of a documentary movie named “Life’s Greater Purpose” which talks about Nick Vujicic’s biography, how he learned to use his mind and body to the fullest.

Achievements

  • Vujicic was felicitated with the “Australian Young Citizen Award” for his determination and courage in 1990.
  • In 2009, Vujicic got featured in a short film titled ‘The Butterfly Circus’, directed by Joshua Weigel in 2009. The film also starred Eduardo Verástegui, a Mexican actor, and American Doug Jones.
  • Nick won the “Best Actor in Short Film” award at the “Method Fest Independent Film Festival” in 2010. He played the role of “Will” in the movie “The Butterfly Circus”.

Introduction

Disability is not inability.

This is the story of a great person, Nicholas James Nick Vujicic, who stands as an inspiration to other people with his great qualities that is faith, will power and perseverance. Even though he is a disabled person his disability has not stopped him from doing what he has wanted to do. Nick Vujicic was born on 4 December 1982 in Melbourne, Australia with a rare disability called Phocomelia characterised by the absence of all four limbs. 

Overcoming depression 

Nick has a small foot on his left hip. It gives him balance and enables him to kick. With his foot, he writes with a pen and picks things up between his toes. He also plays golf with a heavy stick tucked under his chin. He is a huge fan of the English Premier League. His parents did their best to make him independent from the start. His father gave him the courage to learn how to swim by putting him in water at 18 months. His mother invented a special plastic device to enable him to hold a pen and pencil. 

Nick’s achievements

He believes that challenges strengthen our opinions. With the help of his religion, friends and family, Nick becomes an international symbol of triumph over adversity. Nick won the Australian Young Citizen of the Year award in 1990 for his bravery and perseverance. His persistence made him achieve a degree in Financial Planning and Real Estate. He went to Hawaii in 2008 and was trained in surfing by Bethany Hamilton. Nick was on the cover of Surfer magazine with his feat of doing the 360-degree spins. He is able to do this feat because of his low centre of gravity. 

Nick and Kanae Miyahara, whose mother was a Mexican and father was a Japanese, got married on February 12, 2012 and on February 13, 2013 they were blessed with the birth of a healthy baby boy with full body. 

Nick became a motivational speaker

Nick uses his story to inspire and inform people all around the world. Nick presents values, principles, attitudes and perspectives that challenge and equip people from all walks of life to overcome their adversities.

There is no battle of life that can keep a determined person away from achieving her goal. We all have a measure of determination for something in life. But when we use determination in a positive way, we reap its benefits in a wonderful way. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that determination is the key to your relationship with God.
