Housing & Residence Life FAQ

Freshman students - fall 2023, live-on requirement.

The first-year live on requirement at the university is fulfilled by both the residence halls and through living in house with Fraternity & Sorority Life .

Will there be space for me in the residence halls?

We have housing available to every first-year student who would like to live on campus. For the most recent updated housing availability, log-in to your housing application to view available rooms.

When I try to sign up for a room I am unable to see any available.

Students who are unable to see any available rooms should try the following options:

1) If you selected a specialized community on the "Choose your community" tab, the spaces may have filled. Navigate back to the "Choose your community" page and select "academic traditional" at the bottom of the page. Then click "save and continue" until you reach the room selection page.

2) If you are in a roommate group, there may no longer be spaces available to accommodate the entire group. If you leave the group, you will see additional room options on the room selection page.

Residence Hall Living Question and Answer - 2022

Have questions about Residence hall Living? Here is the recording from our Live Q & A Session. Housing and Residence Life and Vandals Dining Staff were live to answer your questions about fall move-in and residence hall living for the coming year. If you have additional questions, email [email protected].

What if there is damage in my room when I move-in?

Our team puts in a great deal of effort to make sure your room is clean and in good condition. Rooms may have some normal wear from usage over time. Items such as small paint chips, scratches in wood/painted furniture, or pinholes in cork board are considered “normal wear”. It is the responsibility of each student to inspect their space at move-in and report the condition of the space.

All residents must complete a Room Condition Report within 72 hours of check-in.

To submit your Room Condition Report please visit our online Room Condition Form

Responsibility for Room Condition Information Document

What size sheets will I need for my bed?

Our beds are standard deep twin XL size.

What comes in my room?

Residence hall rooms are furnished with:

 • Extra-Long Twin Bed
 • Desk and Chair
 • Dresser or Wardrobe (depending on building)
 • Garbage Bin (recycling bins are available upon request)

All items must remain in room.

Are mini fridges provided?

Yes we provide mini fridges so there is no need to bring one from home. There is one mini fridge provided per room in Wallace, Tower and McConnell. The LLCs come with a full size refrigerator and microwave in each suite.

Who cleans my bathroom?

Lounges, hallways, other common spaces and the Tower and McConnell residence hall bathrooms are cleaned daily by our dedicated custodial staff.

Students living in the LLCs and Wallace residence halls are responsible for cleaning their bathrooms.

What is a residence hall agreement?

The residence hall license agreement is a binding commitment to live on campus for the duration of the agreement contract. The University of Idaho residence hall license agreement includes both room and meals.

Can I live on campus during the winter break?

Yes and No. Students living in the LLC may continue to be on campus during winter break. Students with winter break housing needs should work directly with the housing office to make housing arrangements.

I lost my VandalCard and cannot get into my room!

Residence Hall students who have lost their VandalCard can get a temporary key from the Information Desk. The Information Desk will provide a temporary key during their hours of operation. If you have lost your VandalCard while the Information Desk is closed please contact the RA on call using the number located in your hall.

Can I apply to live with my friend?

Absolutely. In order to room with a friend, choose the same room during the Housing application process.

Students who would like to live together, but not in the same room, can choose Wallace Residence Center and the Living Learning Communities. Suite style options are a great choice for students wanting to live together but not wanting to share a bedroom.

What if my roommate and I don’t get along?

We want you to be happy and comfortable living on campus. The first step to take if you and your roommate are having a hard time adjusting to living together is to talk with your RA. If you still feel you must change rooms, please visit the housing office, and we will help you apply for a room change.

There are no room changes during dead week and finals week.

Are single rooms available?

Yes. Each year we are able to approve a limited number of room “buy outs” in Theophilus Tower and Wallace Residence Center. This means students buy the other half of the double-capacity room.

If interested, email [email protected] to let us know you would like a single room. We let you know within a few days if we can approve your request.

If my roommate moves out, can I keep the room to myself?

Yes and no. Students have seven days after their roommate leaves to declare they would like to buy out the other half of the room. Students may also choose to move out and choose a single room (if rooms are available). If students do not declare the desire to purchase the other half of the room, housing will begin the process of moving in another student.

Please note: housing can not guarantee single rooms if there is no availability.

How is safety and security on campus?

Resident safety and security is important to us.

Each residence hall is protected by a VandalCard reader that unlocks the door for residents of the building. Students are encouraged to keep the doors to their rooms locked and follow common sense safety precautions.

Resident Assistants also do nightly rounds of the buildings to ensure safety and enforce quiet hours. Additionally, campus security does two random rounds with RAs per day.

For more information, contact [email protected] or 208-885-7233 (SAFE).

Where can I go for help?

There are several options you can go to for help.

Information Desk, located in the Living Learning Communities is available for all students 24/7 every day. Students can visit the desk for emergencies, room lock-outs, lost keys, disturbances, complaints or any other safety needs.

Each hall has an RA on call number you can contact. Numbers are posted in each hall.

Campus Security

The Campus Security Team is on patrol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - including holidays and academic breaks. You can also contact Campus Security to utilize their safe walk program. This program is free for students, faculty, and staff. More information can be found at uidaho.edu/safe-walk . Campus Security can be reached at 208-885-7233 (SAFE).

Is campus security near the residence halls?

Yes. Housing and Residence life works directly with Moscow Police to ensure safety in the residence halls. Campus Security also does nightly rounds of residence hall buildings, student safety checks and a 24-hour a day campus free campus security walking service. For more information on the Safe Walk program, go to Security Services site.

Public Transportation & Parking

Do i need a car, no vehicle no problem.

U of I is a beautiful, walkable campus adjacent to downtown Moscow. With free public transportation and nearly 2,500 bicycle rack spaces, your educational experience can truly be vehicle-free.

Where can I park my personal vehicle?

Parking on campus is extremely limited and students outnumber parking spaces. Students must purchase a parking permit before they bring their vehicle to campus. Residence Hall students are eligible to purchase a Silver or Economy parking permit from Parking and Transportation Services . Parking permits go on sale online starting July 6, 2022, for the fall semester. Students who do not purchase a parking permit before they arrive should not bring their vehicles to campus. Note that parking a motorcycle on campus does not require a parking permit.

Read more about student parking permits on the Parking and Transportation Services website .

Is there somewhere to store my bicycle?

The University of Idaho encourages bicycle transportation. Designated bike racks at located outside the entrances of Wallace Residence Center, McConnell, Tower and Living Learning Communities.

Please stop by the housing office if you would like to store your bike indoors. We have limited spaces available in Wallace, McConnell and the Tower residence halls. The housing office is located on the second floor of Wallace Residence Center.

Where can I park my motorcycle?

There is motorcycle parking near the residence halls and no parking permit is necessary. You may not store motorized vehicles inside your room or residence hall at any time.

Mail, Facilities and ITS Support

How does mail work for students living in the residence halls.

Students can pick up their mail at the LLC Information Desk located in Living Learning Community Building 2.

A VandalCard or other form of identification is required to pick up mail.

All students have an assigned MSC number which is unique to the student. The MSC number is required for the student to receive mail. Any mail that does not have the student's name and MSC number will be returned to sender. Students with a fall booking will be sent their MSC number for receiving packages in late July. This information will also be provided when they check into their room.

If a student wishes to have mail sent to be ready for move-in, they can start sending mail to their student mailing address 10 days prior to move-in day.

Student Mailing Address: Student Name MSC #____ 901 Paradise Creek Street Moscow ID 83843

Are there free laundry facilities available?

Absolutely! Washers and dryers are located in all buildings and are free to use. You only need to provide your own soap and dryer sheets. Ask your RA on which floor your nearest laundry room is located. Use of our laundry machines for all residents is free.

Are there computers and printers for me to use?

Yes. Each residence hall has computer labs with printing capabilities. The LLCs are the exception. However, all students are welcome to use the large public computer lab in the bottom floor of Wallace Residence Center. All full-time students receive 250 pages of printing per semester.

How do I connect my network-compatible devices to the main campus network?

Many network-compatible devices, such as game consoles and smart TVs, do not work on the main campus networks AirVandalGold and AirVandalHome. Instead, they will need to first be registered at help.uidaho.edu/avsetup , then connected to the AirVandalGuest network. Connecting a wired device (Ethernet) will also require registration of the device at help.uidaho.edu/avsetup. For support or questions, contact the Student Technology Center at 208-885-4357 or submit a ticket online at oit.uidaho.edu .

Is there a kitchen I can use?

Yes, Wallace and McConnell have kitchens in their basements, while our Living Learning Communities each have a kitchen on the main floor.

What do I do if I see an elevator that needs maintenance?

If you seen an elevator requiring maintenance, please report it to the LLC Information Desk immediately at 208-885-7379.

How do I submit a service request for my microwave or fridge?

Wallace, Tower and McConnell Residents

Please report Microwave/Fridge concerns by calling 866-651-5638 to schedule a time to have the unit repaired or replaced.

This housing option provides an environment where housing is not restricted by traditional limitations of gender.

How can I sign up?

To sign up for Gender Inclusive Housing, select "Gender Inclusive Housing" on the application, agree to the terms and choose from the available gender-inclusive spaces.

All participants living in gender-inclusive housing are expected to adhere to philosophies of respect and inclusion and are expected to be a positive member of the larger campus housing community the same as any other resident.

Which residence halls offer gender-inclusive housing?

Gender-inclusive housing for first-year students is offered in Wallace Residence Center.

Non-first year students, including non-first year transfers, options are located in the Living Learning Communities and Wallace Residence Center.

All gender-inclusive housing assignments are located in suites with private bathrooms.

Can I change rooms if I no longer want gender-inclusive housing?

Yes, all students can request a room change at any time. There may be limitations to room selection options depending on the time of year and if there is available space.

Is anyone forced to live with someone who is not the same gender?

No. Students will never be placed in a gender inclusive suite if they have not selected that option on their application. If not enough students select this option, a student requesting gender inclusive housing may be placed in a single gender suite.

If I have questions about gender-inclusive housing, who can I contact?

For questions about gender inclusive housing and other accommodations related to gender identity/expression, please contact our student assignments team at [email protected] or 208-885-6571.

Transfer Room Assignments?

On the UF housing website it says room assignments will be emailed by Dec 15 for the spring semester. As a transfer I fall into that category and am wondering if anyone else has received email about their room/roomate/hall? I know it’s still the 17th but I’m anxious! :)

Legends of the Metropol: the Tsarist hotel that preserved its luxury through Soviet times

uf room assignments

Many famous politicians and popstars, monarchs and presidents, poets and artists, movie stars and ballet dancers have stayed in the Metropol Hotel during its long history, from Bernard Shaw and Bertolt Brecht, to Michael Jackson, David Bowie, and Sophia Loren. The public is even welcome to view the stunning interior of the Metropol during a tour every Sunday.

Metropol myths

uf room assignments

“Several years ago we had an American writer, Amor Towles, who stayed in the Metropol for several months in order to write a book of fiction, ‘A Gentleman in Moscow,’ about a Russian aristocrat imprisoned to life in a small attic of the Metropol Hotel,” my Metropol guide for the day, tells me.

“The novel was published in 2016 and instantly became a bestseller in the U.S. From this point on, we have had dozens of American tourists every week coming with this book and trying to see the attic where the main hero lives, but we don’t have one, it’s an entire fantasy of the author. But even without the attic nobody leaves disappointed.”

uf room assignments

There are many memoires, books, documentaries, and feature films dedicated to the Metropol all over the world and they all create a certain image of the place - sometimes far departed from reality.

uf room assignments

Funded by the Russian merchant Savva Mamontov, the hotel was built in 1905. Several architects worked on the project: Leo Kekushev, one of the best specialists on Moscow’s modern art scene, started the project. William Walcot, his British colleague, took over before a group of completely different architects took the helm and completed the iconic building.

uf room assignments

No expenses were spared in making the structure rock solid. This was evident when, shortly after the Revolution, Russian junkers fighting the Bolsheviks used the Metropol as a stronghold due to its thick walls. They holed up in the hotel for an entire week before artillery fire forced them to surrender - but the structure survived relatively undamaged.

uf room assignments

As legend has it, Mamontov was struck by a fascinating idea - he wanted to replicate Mikhail Vrubel's famous “Princess of Dreams” painting as a ceramic mosaic and display it for the public. The version of Vrubel's work, depicting a dying young knight and a princess hovering over him, is now on permanent display on the hotel’s exterior. It demonstrates one of Mamontov’s principles: To bring art to the streets.

uf room assignments

Mamontov even wanted the hotel to be an opera house and envisaged the famous Russian singer Feador Chaliapin performing there, but sadly this never materialized.

From Michael Jackson to Lee Harvey Oswald

uf room assignments

About 80 percent of the hotel’s interior design dates back to the Russian Empire and has been carefully preserved. The luxurious fixtures and style that survived the 1917 Revolution and Soviet Union - largely thanks to the “hotel for foreigners” status is acquired early on - makes the places truly unique. The hotel has 351 rooms, both new and old.

uf room assignments

“This chair and table were used by Michael Jackson, when he stayed here,” explains the guide, showing me one of the hotel’s largest modern suites. When the guests come to see this room, they often ask if they can sit in the chair. The room also has a piano used by Jackson; apparently he used it to compose his “Stranger in Moscow” track.

uf room assignments

I asked my guide about the room where John F. Kennedy’s killer - Lee Harvey Oswald - once stayed. She was astonished. At that very moment - and by complete coincidence - we were standing right in front of that very room, number 2219. Oswald had asked for Russian citizenship but had no luck, he then tried to commit suicide before spending three long months in the room waiting to see if his reapplication would be successful.

uf room assignments

There is a cozy, elegant room, made in green and gold tones. The room boasts a view of the Bolshoi theatre, world-famous Russian ballerina Diana Vishneva's favorite establishment. When she comes from Saint Petersburg to Moscow to perform at the Bolshoi theatre, she often stays there. There are many more rooms in the hotel kept warm for their regular visitors.

uf room assignments

Some rooms even have important historical value. Room 2217 is a legendary place, in which the first constitution of the Soviet Union was written. The people working on it were locked in there by Yakov Sverdlov and did not have the right to leave without finishing it. The work was done in a few days.

If you want to have a look at the hotel rooms, hideouts and more, the Metropol is open for everybody: You can come to the excursion that takes place every Sunday (Teatralniy Proez d, 2, Moscow, Russia ). Settling down in a luxurious room with a view of Red Square might be an option as well.

This room can be used for a group of 60 people for a seated dinner or more for a standing reception. A back bar with a small sink and tall counter are on the west side of the room. The room can be set up with rectangle or round tables and can also be used as an open floor for dance classes.
The second floor also features the Community Living Room that can be rented for smaller gatherings and the Green Dragon Game Room that has regular game times for Bridge, Pinochle, Mah Jongg and Bingo. The Game Room can also be rented for evening and weekend private use.

If you are interested in learning more about the rentable spaces on the second floor, please contact Jenny Kostroff in the office at (208) 669-2249 or by email at .

Rooms can be rented seperately or together for events and they can also be added to a Great Room rental (for example, as a wedding location upstairs before a reception in the Great Room). We are happy to show you around the new floor so feel free to come on by when the building is open. Please note, the side doors on the 1912 Center are only unlocked during events on the second floor so please enter on the southeast side of the building's first floor, by the 1912 Center bench, to find the office then you can head upstairs via stairs or elevator.

Due to the fantastic community support in 2022, the facility continued to grow adding two more classrooms on the west end of the second floor. The Barr Family Historic Classroom and Book Room are now open!

The Book Room may be used at no cost any time the building is open and the room contains a large book shelf featuring a community used book sale in partnership with Moscow Friends of the Library. Funds raised are shared equally between the 1912 Center for operations of the room and Friends of the Library to support the programming that they offer to the community (like summer reading funding).

The Barr Family Historic Classroom is home to the Pen & Primer Project. This program allows area 4th graders to attend a day in the life of a student in 4th grade in 1913. Teachers interested in signing up their classes for this fall program can contact our office at (208) 669-2249. Students use nib pens, write with chalk, practice marching drills, use a 1913 Primer and more for a fun filled day!

We are still fundraising to be able to complete the third floor. Yep, there is another floor to go! Feel free to donate to help us to finish the renovations. The third floor is a big and beautiful one that our community will love to use. Help us to get there with your gift today!

Questions about the renovation project? Please contact Jenny Kostroff in the 1912 Center office at (208) 669-2249 or e-mail the 1912 Center at and she will happily share with you what is happening at the building. Thank you so much for your shared excitement as we get more space renovated inside the 1912 Center as soon as possible!

In the meantime, please visit our or find us on Instagram under 1912 Center for updates on happenings in the building and photos of events in the spaces to help you plan your next visit to the 1912 Center. We appreciate your support!

WEATHER ALERT

A flood warning in effect for Columbia County

‘you cannot unsee him’: dollar general shooting survivor shares the lingering trauma left behind 1 year later.

Aleesia Hatcher , Multimedia Journalist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – “I’m just telling my story in hopes it evokes change,” Mercedez Jones said as she read from a memoir in the living room of her home.

Jones wrote the reflection piece over the past year, recounting what it was like to be involved in the traumatizing tragedy of the Dollar General shooting.

It’s a day she will never forget. A gunman opened fire in a hate-filled attack that left three innocent souls dead.

Jones was one of the survivors. She drives by the store every morning to take her 2-year-old daughter to day care but said the constant commute brings back unwanted trauma.

“The one thing that sticks in my mind about that day is that you can’t really get that image of the shooter out of your head. You cannot unsee him. I can see him right now,” Jones said.

Just one day after the 1-year mark of the shooting, Jones said it’s still hard to heal from the pain.

She was in the store with her daughter, grabbing art supplies when the shooter came in.

“It was surreal. It wasn’t just because it was you gotta act fast. You gotta act fast. You don’t really understand what’s going on. So I act fast. I have a daughter with me, so I didn’t have time to freeze up,” Jones said.

Leaving all her belongings behind, she grabbed her daughter and ran out of the emergency door.

“I was kind of trapped behind Dollar General, and that’s how we came in contact with the shooter me, as well as other three older white ladies who couldn’t jump the fence as well,” Jones said. “We were there begging and pleading for our lives when I actually didn’t hear him say, ‘If you don’t want me to shoot you, run.’ I can’t recall. Another lady who’s actually closer to him, she recalls him saying those words. All I know is, at the same time, I knew he wasn’t shooting.”

Jones ran for her life as she heard shots ring out behind her.

“I ran into Flag Street Apartments and banged on a lady’s door. I think her name is Mrs. Miriam. I’m so glad for her because she actually let me and my daughter in,” she said.

The interaction with the gunman still replays in her head.

You don’t get that image out of your head. They say time heals all wounds. But when you can’t make sense of it, yeah, it doesn’t really go away,” Jones said. “It wasn’t just mentally traumatizing. It was soul-crushing to think someone would do something like that, senseless madness.”

Jones is looking for assistance with finding a new area to live. If you’re interested in helping, email [email protected] .

Identity of man involved in apparent murder-suicide of Rice University student released

Michael Horton , Digital Content Producer , Houston, TX

Brittany Taylor , Senior Digital Content Producer

Corley Peel , Reporter

HOUSTON – A medical examiner has confirmed the identity of the man involved in an apparent murder-suicide in a dorm room at Rice University Monday.

Habeneyom Belai, 22, died from a single gunshot wound to the head, which examiners confirmed was self-inflicted.

Recommended Videos

Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a 21-year-old junior at Rice who Belai was believed to have a dating relationship with, was also found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Belai is believed to be from Florida and was visiting Avila at the time of the murder. It’s unclear how long the two had been inside the room before being found.

KPRC 2 contacted the University of Florida, and an employee from the school confirmed that a student with the same name attended UF from 2019 to 2023. However, the university was unable to confirm definitively if student was the man involved in the murder.

Avila’s family arrived in Houston Tuesday morning and received support from the university’s leadership team. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

Here’s what we know about Avila

She was from Nottingham, Maryland and attended the Community College of Baltimore County where she was active in many organizations including the college-wide student programming board, Multicultural Student Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and the First Year Experience Mentor program.

Avila transferred to Rice University in Spring of 2024 where she majored in political science, pre-law. While at Rice, she was a Deputy parliamentarian of the Rice Student Association; peer academic advisor at Jones College (residential hall); and a member of the university’s Honor Council.

The Community College of Baltimore County gave KPRC 2 the following statement regarding Avila’s passing:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a beloved member of the CCBC Class of 2023. Andrea was a passionate leader, an exceptional scholar, and a mentor to many. Her infectious smile and unwavering determination inspired all who knew her. The CCBC community extends its deepest sympathies to Andrea’s family during this difficult time.”'

What happened to Avila?

Police said Avila’s parents called campus police after not hearing from their daughter, which prompted a welfare check at Jones College, a residential building on the campus.

 • Rice University student killed in housing unit in murder-suicide has been identified

When campus police entered Avila’s dorm, they found her dead with a gunshot wound. They also found a man, who was not a student at the university, dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A note was allegedly found by investigators, which led them to believe the shooting was a murder-suicide.

Rice University implemented a call center for students who need support dealing with the tragedy.

KPRC 2 News created a series, “ Breaking Free ,” reporting on domestic-related violence and its horrific consequences. The series showcased various stories of survival, heartache, and some even ending in death, but each shared a list of free domestic violence resources on how to get help.

Important billing information

Housing and dining charges are billed once per semester; however, when you sign the License Agreement, you will be financially responsible for housing and dining costs for the entire academic year. Use our yearly cost estimator chart to estimate your yearly costs.

Room and board payments can be made in one of two installment plans:

One payment per semester: This payment plan is suggested if you are paying with financial aid. Payments are due in August (for Fall semester) and January (for Winter semester) on the same day as tuition. Specific dates are posted on ASU’s academic calendar

ASU Payment Plan: Students can budget the payment of certain eligible university charges over several months within the semester. Eligible charges include tuition, housing, meal plans, parking permits and health insurance. Visit the ASU Payment Plan website for more information.)
