What Are the Benefits of Good Manners? Essay
“Manners are made up of trivialities of deportment, which can be easily learned if one does not happen to know them; manner is personality–the outward manifestation of one’s innate character and attitude toward life .”
If these words were analyzed, one would understand manners as the elements of one’s personality at the basic level and the components of one’s character at the broader level. A normal human being, in addition to being physically and mentally fit, is one who portrays courtesy and good etiquette. The manifestation of a decent demeanor in dealing with others could be defined as the mark of a good-mannered person.
Though good manners are widely appreciated and also become pivotal factors in one’s progress in life, there is still a huge populace who does not either believe in them or their importance. In this era of cutthroat competition, one gets an edge if one’s communication skills and public dealing are exemplary. It would not be an exaggeration to say that these qualities are attributed to a person’s manners and etiquettes.
Manners are customs and traditions of a society that govern how people treat one another and behave in social situations. They are meant to smooth the rough edges of human nature. Manners maintain order, promote the values of a society, and foster positive human interactions.
Imagine yourself standing in a queue to buy a movie ticket with your infant in your lap. Suddenly a youngster rushes and walks past you, without even caring that he has pushed the little one. He buys the ticket and just gets away in a jiffy. You would feel so bad and definitely curse him. However, in the same situation, if the gentleman ahead in the queue gives you his place and lets you buy the ticket, you would not only be grateful but also respect him genuinely. This is what distinguishes good manners from bad manners. All said and done, etiquette is the mark of a civilized society.
Etiquette, courtesy, and good manners are three terms closely related and complementary. Each has its own meanings and applications, but all are vital to a smooth and enjoyable sense of shared values and a supportive community. They foster not only a feeling of mutual likeability but also a certain kind of harmony and solidarity.
A well-mannered person not only creates a favorable impression on others but also feels good about him/herself. Good manners are not restricted to certain gestures of chivalry or social etiquette. They go deeper. They are an expression of your sensitivity towards others. They exhibit your consideration for others’ concerns and circumstances. They instill a sense of sharing and appreciation. Good manners not only make an individual more polished but also a better human.
It is important that manners are inculcated at a very young age as the perception and focus are clearer then. The family atmosphere plays a significant role in shaping a child’s behavior and personality. However, there are certain things for which training becomes important. The ambit of good manners does not end by saying please, sorry, and thanks. True manners can only be understood in the real sense when their meaning is imbibed. One should never underestimate the power of good manners. They can transform children and make them better individuals. They would grow up to be more considerate and understand the injury caused by an unkind word or a thoughtless action. But sermonizing does not help. It is pertinent to be a role model who the kids can emulate and look up to. This would give them a practical grounding as well as a deeper comprehension of the significance of etiquettes and a pleasant demeanor.
Modern etiquette instructs people to greet friends and acquaintances with warmth and respect, refrain from insults and prying curiosity, offer hospitality equally and generously to guests, wear clothing suited to the occasion, contribute to conversations without dominating them, offer assistance to those in need, eat neatly and quietly, avoid disturbing others with unnecessary noise, follow the established rules of an organization upon being a member, arrive promptly when expected, comfort the bereaved and respond to invitations promptly. Violations of etiquette, if severe, can cause public disgrace, and in private hurt individual feelings, create misunderstandings or real grief and pain, and even escalate into a murderous rage.
Manners, however not always comprise objective or uniform behavior. They are sensitive to the cultural context. What is excellent etiquette in one society may shock in another. A small example is belching after meals, which is generally considered bad etiquette. However, in some societies, it is encouraged as they see it as an indicator of good digestion. The meanings, therefore, change with the cultural backdrop where one operates.
The best thing about manners is that they keep evolving. Therefore there is nothing rigid about them. The only thing to take care of is that they are understood and exhibited. Manners can win hearts and even break them, so they should be portrayed with utmost care.

What Are the Benefits of Good Manners? Essay
1. introduction.
Good manners are a prevailing attribute in one's character. Good manners include gentleness, modesty, decency, and being polite. This should be the basic criterion of developing an attractive personality. You cannot separate good manners from good character. Human nature is the best example of the importance of good manners. Man is the most intelligent creature on this earth and possesses a lot of good qualities. The best feature of a human being is the effective and meaningful use of intelligence. This is what is lacking in animals. Good manners are the developed attitude and professionalism in an individual to live in society and, at the optimum level, be good to the other person. A person who is carrying good manners is graced with the best behavior. He doesn't hurt the feelings of another person and, in turn, tries to fulfill the requirements of the situation. A man with good manners is a gentleman who knows what is right and what is not. He has learned how to be courteous and well-behaved. With proficiency in good manners, he can put others at ease and make them feel comfortable and cheerful. The dictionary meaning of the term "good manners" would be - manner, behavior, deportment, mode - all meaning the same, i.e. well behavior. In the context of behaving properly with ease and per excellence, it's a correct behavior and actions that have a good and reasonable excuse and explainable logic behind all this. On the contrary, it's more than what is described. It's the way of acting, style of presentation, an individual way to do things, a specific method and style of action which is quite known and definite. This is particularly the nature of a person, how he understands and, in the end, the way he responds to it.
1.1 Importance of Good Manners
Good manners may seem old-fashioned and out-of-date, but there is still a place for them in today's society. Good manners are never out of style. They make the simple things special and the hard things easier. Common courtesies such as holding a door open for someone, saying "please" and "thank you," and allowing an elderly or disabled person to go to the head of the line are small acts that make a big difference in daily life. Without them, the world would be a more unruly place. Good manners are in decline, observes psychologist and physician Willard Gaylin. He cites a growing narcissism and "in your face" behaviors that range from road rage to cell phone rudeness. Basic civility seems less important to people who are wrapped up in themselves and their desires. The results can be seen in public and private schools, where children with few guidelines of behavior and a lack of discipline exhibit various levels of lack of respect for one another, teachers, and school property. If left unchecked, this incivility can grow into full-fledged violence. Computerized weapons in schools have been paralleled by a survey of American Association of School Administrators members, in which 86% labeled school violence as an increasing problem. Eight in ten polled by the National PTA and the National Education Association said having good manners and being well behaved are more difficult for kids today than 20 years ago.
1.2 Definition of Good Manners
As a subject of speculation, good manners is the salt of life. It is a fashion which never goes out of style as it is important everywhere. It plays a key role in the behavior of individuals and in maintaining peace at all levels, in societies and among nations. Everyone has the basic knowledge of what it is and its significance. Consideration for others is being polite. It is an ornament for the young and an elder both. It is a sign of civilization. A man or woman without good manners would be considered undesirable. At some stage or another one must have been in all the situations mentioned below: i) To speak too loudly in public places or the theater. ii) To ask an embarrassing question. iii) To make fun of someone who is physically disabled. iv) When to fail to thanks for small kindness or said something to indirectly hurt someone. All of these acts have a common factor, i.e. they ignore the feelings of other people. The essence of good manners is to show respect. Respecting another as an equal or acknowledging someone else's self-respect is as important as self-respect for oneself. One should always keep in mind 'do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.' This is the basic principle of good manners. Turning the spotlight inwards may reveal that there are complaints from other people that they have been deprived of their respect. This might not be true, but the fact remains that the person making these allegations had felt so and it is very dangerous to allow such misunderstandings to develop. The topic of consideration for others is a moral issue and one can say good manners are a code of moral conduct. But it is not necessary to accept this stoically. Consideration for others should be a pleasant business. It involves fostering a genial temperament, sowing seeds of good humor, putting a brake on hot-headed actions, and developing self-control and most commonly of all making use of tact. Tact is the faculty to say 'the right thing at the right time.' It brings up the image of a person who weighs his every action. This is the type of person who never has enemies and is liked by people of every race and creed wherever he goes.
2. Social Benefits
Social skills are defined as the skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language, and our personal appearance. However, the ability to process and use these skills effectively can determine our ability to form and maintain close relationships with others. Good manners play a very important role in forming social skills, and this fact may be agreed upon after scrutinizing the three social skills explained in the following paragraphs. Interactions with people take place every day, whether it be for a discussion or a simple conversation. A friendly conversation with a person can be a great source of happiness and highly satisfying. Conversely, a rude, obnoxious, and unfriendly conversation will irk the person and may disturb him. At times, it is worse; the person may be so hurt by the conversation that he may decide to end the relationship with the other person. So we can clearly see that the manner and nature of the conversation can greatly affect the relationship between people. Similarly, the good manner of the speaker can make the other person more attentive and interested in what the speaker is saying. A good example to illustrate this would be a teacher explaining a concept to a student. A teacher who is polite and considerate will be more liked and respected by the student, who in turn will pay more attention and show more interest in learning compared to a teacher who is rude and irritable. This can be applied to all relationships between people, and it is a fact that people will avoid those who ill-treat them or are rude towards them. So if everyone can have good manners when interacting with people, it will definitely lead to more positive and satisfying relationships with others.
2.1 Positive Interactions
Positive interactions are a natural outcome of consistently using good manners. When people are polite, courteous, and respectful to others, they create a positive atmosphere. Instead of focusing on the offensive or negative behavior of a friend, family member, or co-worker, one can look for good in the person and build on that. People who practice good manners tend to be polite and considerate, which leads others to think they are nice people. We feel at ease around them, we can relax, let our guard down, be ourselves, and say what we feel without fear of judgment. This is the essence of positive interaction with others. When you are at ease and comfortable with someone, it is far easier to show them patience, tolerance, and understanding. When we are considerate, it allows the other person to feel comfortable and this lowers his or her defenses. Timothy E. Floodman, in the Sites Footer Information Systems Division Information Services Department at Texas A&M University, has written, "We attack people when we feel threatened and in a defensive mode. Most conflicts are the result of people feeling that their self-esteem, their self-worth, their very identity is being attacked or threatened. If you lower the other person's defenses, there is a greater chance of resolving conflicts and important issues. The surest way to lower defenses is by being nice. Think of a time when someone treated you with unprovoked kindness. Acting in a contrary fashion, you probably felt guilt or shame. It is because deep down we all want to be better than we are. Kindness actually encourages people to move in that direction." Good manners are the foundation in understanding that kindness towards others encourages positive interaction and enhances our relationships with others.
2.2 Respectful Relationships
Having good manners can help to improve communication in relationships. And people who practice good manners are usually better at communicating and understanding friends. People who practice good manners are better at communication and usually it results in understanding those friends. Since 'please' and 'thank you' have such a huge effect on young children, it is a good idea for parents to keep reminding their children to use those words because it could affect the way they communicate throughout the rest of their lives. Studies have shown that children who use the words 'please' and 'thank you' in their daily lives are generally more liked by their teachers and are usually academically and socially successful. Manners can have an effect on the way someone is judging our personality, be it on a date or a job interview. The way we present ourselves to other people is influenced largely by our manners, such as speaking properly, making appropriate conversation, and making eye contact. These are all the basic elements for a good first impression and will eventually lead to a respectable relationship through communication. We also tend to feel more comfortable around people who have good manners. For example, it would probably be very awkward to be served in a shop by a sales assistant who does not use any manners or speaks to you as if you are a child. On the other hand, if that sales assistant possesses good manners and speaks politely, it's likely that the customer would feel more comfortable and would be able to talk to the sales assistant more openly and comfortably. Decent manners are definitely an important key for a successful and respectful relationship with others.
2.3 Improved Communication
Improving communication or being able to communicate properly is the most important of good manners. One must be able to express himself; only then people can understand each other. Whether it is a business or casual conversation, manners are important in showing that you respect the other person and that you value their opinion. In today's world where the amount of media communication is ever increasing, poor manners are often exhibited through email and writing skills. Grammar is a huge improving communication factor and improper grammar can change the meaning of a sentence. Therefore, someone who takes the time to write a well-written letter has shown that they care about the person they are writing to. Email is similar, but often email is taken as too casual of a form of communication. People often send email with little thought and this can lead to misinterpretation of the message. Email is often seen as an easy way out of contacting people, so it's the manner of choosing to communicate with someone via telephone instead of taking the easy route of email, which can show good manners. Telephone communication also can show manners, for example, it is common courtesy to ask if the person can talk at the present time. If the person says no, then one would reschedule a more appropriate time to talk. This is much more respectful than forcing a conversation at a bad time.
3. Personal Benefits
Personal benefits of good manners are reflected in a stronger sense of self-confidence. It has been seen that those with good manners have a higher self-esteem and are more mentally competent than those without. When a person is sure of their own abilities and believes in themselves, it is easier to take on new opportunities and to recognize those that are worth taking. These are two more ways to further one's self in the world and in their career. It has been seen that those with good manners have an initiative to take on new opportunities. This is probably because they have been taught to do everything the best that they can and are unafraid of new challenges. They have also been taught that they will be recognized and well thought of for doing the superior work they are capable of. Good-mannered people are also able to recognize good opportunities when they see them. This is a great advantage in itself; being able to distinguish between a good opportunity and a bad one can often mean success or failure.
3.1 Enhanced Self-Confidence
When someone is respectful, they receive the same treatment in return. Acting polite and well-mannered makes a person worth trusting and being with, which is a great confidence booster. The manner in which others communicate and behave around a person has a heavy impact on that person's self-confidence. If people are polite and direct with that person, it will give them self-assurance and confidence in what they do. This person will then also feel comfortable communicating and presenting themselves in any situation. High self-esteem and confidence are important keys to success. If a person has self-belief and faith in their ability, only then can they be successful. Because good manners are the best way to show respect for others, it helps a person gain the respect and esteem of others, which makes it easier to have more confidence in themselves. Behavior in any situation is based on interpersonal communication. The way one communicates with others and how they present themselves reflects their image. Good manners have a deep impact on the image a person creates for themselves. A person with good manners will have a much more likable and impressive image than a person with a bad attitude. This, in turn, increases the confidence of that person as they feel more at ease discussing ideas and taking initiative in any situation. Consider two people taking an interview for a job. The person with poor manners will feel very nervous and uneasy, and the interviewers will also feel unease and hesitate employing the person. On the other hand, the person with good manners will feel confident, and the interviewers will also feel comfortable offering the job. Then it is quite obvious who has the superior chance of obtaining the job. This comparison shows that good manners are a crucial element in enhancing self-confidence. By showing due respect to others and acting in a way that is considerate of others' feelings, a person is respected by others, which in turn makes that person feel more at ease and secure in any situation. This ease and comfort are what self-confidence really is, and it is clear that the best way to improve confidence is by developing good manners.
3.2 Increased Professional Opportunities
Companies prefer to hire people who have good manners. Many employers pay attention to the behavior of the people they interview. People who use good manners are more likely to receive more job offers and higher salaries. Those with a history of using good manners tend to have more professional success over their lifetime. Those who conduct themselves in a professional way by knowing how to use good manners tend to end up in professional jobs. With the fast growing economy we are having it is getting harder to get professional jobs, the more knowledge a person has of the proper way to behave the better chance they will have of getting a professional job. People who know how to use good manners are more likely to receive promotions and move up the professional ladder. They are able to use good manners in getting along with co-workers and clients, they are then able to advance to higher positions within their career. For those looking to work for themselves, it has been shown that people who use good manners have more success. Usually these people need to interact with the public in some way or another. By using good manners they are able to create loyal customers and have a good reputation, therefore having more business and making a good living. With professional success comes financial success. Studies between people who use good manners and those with poor manners have shown that people with good manners have higher salaries. This is especially in employment that deals directly with the public or customers. The reason for increased pay is that people who use good manners are more effective workers. They are able to spend more time working and less time dealing with problems. Problems caused by poor manners can range from small product mistakes to an all-out loss of a job. A person with poor manners is more likely to offend a colleague or client and can sometimes be unaware or unable to redeem themselves. This can lead to problems that can affect a person’s job. Those using good manners are able to more easily get along with people and avoid these problems. They are more reliable, and employers view them in a better light. A person with good manners is more likely to get job security as they are seen to be irreplaceable. This leads to a longer-lasting career and more financial stability.
3.3 Better Reputation
A person with good manners will be respected and held in high esteem by others. Such a person will have a good reputation. A man is often judged by his manners. This makes the possession of good manners an important step in the ladder of success. One who is polite and gentle is respected by all. Even his enemies respect him. Politeness is the result of good manners. It adds colour to one's personality. A man with no manners is an uncivilized man. He does not have any polish in his behaviour. This type of man repels people and they keep away from him. Such a man has a bad name. He is a laughing stock for others. His offensive behaviour makes him unpopular. In contrast to this, a man with good manners is liked by all. He has many friends. His company is pleasant. He is always cheerful because people respect him. His polite behaviour wins him favour of others. He makes a good name everywhere. This is because good manners are the outcome of a cultured and refined behaviour. People judge a man by the way he behaves. If his conduct is good or his way of talking is impressive, then it is the result of his good manners. In the long run, good manners will give a person the friendliest reception. Another important factor in judging a man is his hospitality. A man with good manners is a good host. He is always eager to help his guest in every possible way. His warm reception makes the guest feel at home. He is tactful and knows what his guest likes. He does not do anything to displease him. His motive is to send the guest back with happy thoughts. He is always remembered by his guest. Such a person has no difficulty in finding others who will do him favours, because he himself has done favours with his pleasant and cheerful manner. Good manners make a full man. They are very essential for a happy and successful life. If a man's character is good, he will have good manners. They are a great asset. Without them, a man is like a gem with a flaw, only partial value is realized.
4. Emotional Benefits
Manners have many emotional benefits and can make a person feel very relaxed. When a person is mannerly, it's usually because they feel good about themselves and have a desire to make others feel at ease too. When these good intentions are acted upon, the feeling of content is often achieved. Good manners require thought and consideration, and it is this way of behaving that can make a person feel happier and better about themselves. The knowledge that you've acted in a positive way is a reward in itself, and using manners is proven to be linked with an increase in self-esteem. Less well known is the fact that using good manners can help to reduce stress and rid the body of excess anxiety. A lot of stress and anxiety, especially in today's fast-paced world, is caused because of the guilt that comes from thinking that you've said or done something that you shouldn't have. The sort of social blunders that can play over and over in your head and prevent you from being able to relax can be eradicated by using manners. When you feel like you've effectively communicated or shown respect through your use of manners, you are less likely to regret what you've said or done and more likely to feel at peace with yourself, and this reduces stress. A relaxed and stress-free manner is infectious, and if more people use manners in an attempt to relax and be relaxed, then there is less stress and aggression in the world, which can only be a good thing.
4.1 Reduced Stress and Anxiety
Society. This correlation to life expectancy may be more important in today's world, as stress is prevalent and increasing. Thus, how one experiences stress can influence whether or not it will affect his health. It is known that the human stress response system is not well equipped to differentiate between modern threats and threats that our ancestors faced. This is the reason that some stress seems to be a constant in our lives. Therefore, the more we are able to live in a low-stress state, the less stress will have an opportunity to work in a way that is detrimental to our health. It is widely believed that activities related to manners such as meditation, relaxation, and taking the time to do things right have great value in reducing stress. This gives credence to the idea that good manners can lead to less stress and improved health.
4.2 Increased Empathy and Compassion
Good manners inculcate two important qualities in an individual - empathy and compassion. Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings, emotions, and perspective of another person. It is putting oneself in the shoes of the other. Compassion is the feeling of kindness and understanding towards someone who is undergoing some pain and misfortune. When a person is polite, courteous, and respectful, it becomes easy for him to put himself in the other person's shoes to understand his feelings and emotions. Good manners teach a person to respect the feelings and sentiments of others. This leads to behavior in which a person is more considerate and understanding of the emotions of others. Today, people are so engrossed in their lives and careers that most of the time, friendships, relationships, and emotions are taken for granted. This has led to a breakdown in many relationships, and today there are so few people who actually care for others. A polite and mannered person is able to understand and value relationships. He is more considerate of the feelings of others and thus is able to develop and maintain healthy and meaningful relationships. Empathy and compassion are emotions that are becoming sparser today. There is so much distrust, hatred, and violence across the world, and there are few who actually care for others. It is these emotions that lead to happy and successful lives and meaningful and fulfilling relationships. People who are compassionate are generally more peaceful and happy with themselves as they have less guilt and a feeling of having done wrong to others. Imagine a world where everyone is understanding and considerate of others. There would be no feelings of ill-will and hostility. Global problems can be easily solved if people understand the pain of others. There will be more helping each other and a feeling of brotherhood and unity. These are the emotions that lead to a more united and better world. Good manners are the only way to bring back these emotions in our lives. Today we need to teach these values to our children in the hope that future generations can build a better world. Imagine how wonderful the world would be with kind, considerate, and understanding people.

Essay on Importance of Good Manners
How a person behaves towards the other can be termed ‘manner’. Manners play an important part in everyone’s life. Someone’s manners can tell us so many things about that person, like their background, their education etc. But ‘Manner’ is a general term, that is to say, it does not necessarily mean that manners are always good, though they always should be good, if not cultivated properly they can be bad, which is generally termed as ‘bad – Manners’. And therefore, manners, that is to say, ‘Good Manners’ are cultivated in every child from childhood.
The learning of manners starts from the home since parents are the first teacher of the child, the parents also become the first to teach manners to the child. But one thing to understand here is that the mind of a human is receptive, and hence we, the human, receive or rather learn and grasp so many things that happen in our surroundings. And this surrounding also up to an extent plays a role in the cultivation of manners in the child.
Hence, good surroundings cultivate good manners and vice-versa.
Afterwards, the parents and the surrounding school and teachers play an important part in teaching good manners to the students. For instance, the students must greet the teacher good morning, or good afternoon (according to the time) whenever the teacher enters the classroom, also the use of phrases such as “may I come in” and “may I go” are taught to be used in the school. And these phrases remain with the students for the rest of their life.
Understanding Good Manners
The one thing to understand here is that good manners are not formalities, neither are they social protocol or the rules, which one has to follow to avoid the fine. But it is something that comes from the inside most naturally and by itself, it is something that should not be forced or faked. The way in which we want others to behave with us is also how they want us to behave to them, it can be the simplest way to understand good manners.
