In a narrative essay, your thesis will be a bit different than in an argumentative or explanatory paper. A narrative essay is basically you writing a story for the reader. The purpose of a narrative essay is to make a certain point, using personal experiences or life events to convey your main point or theme. [1] X Trustworthy Source Purdue Online Writing Lab Trusted resource for writing and citation guidelines Go to source However, just as in a standard paper, your thesis will still appear in the introduction of your narrative essay.
Creating Your Thesis
- For example: “In this essay, I will discuss the issue of grief by discuss my grandmother's sickness, discuss my grandmother's death, talk about what happened afterwards.”
- Adjust your first attempt so it is grammatically correct: “In this essay, I will discuss the issue of grief by discussing my grandmother's sickness, my grandmother's death, and what happened afterward.”
- You may want to create a thesis that is a bit more sophisticated and less stilted by removing the more formal phrase, “I will discuss”.
- For example: “Grief affects everyone's life at one point or another, and it certainly has affected mine; when my grandmother became sick and passed away, I had to learn how to deal with the aftermath of her death.”
- Avoid packing too many ideas into one sentence. Your thesis should help ease the reader into your essay, not confuse them.
Preparing to Write the Thesis
- Come up with a topic that is important to you and that you feel you can talk about in a personal way.
- Another way to find a personal event is to look through your old social media posts, as they often chronicle important or meaningful events in your life.
- Remembering the details of the event through your five senses will also help to trigger other details or images you may have forgotten.
- For example, maybe you remember the taste of coconut after your grandmother's funeral, which will then help you remember that you all ate your grandmother's favorite coconut cake at the gathering after the funeral. You can then try to find that recipe and use it as a way to jog other memories of your grandmother.

How to Write a Thesis Statement?
Start by understanding what a thesis statement is: it’s a sentence that encapsulates your paper’s primary argument or point. The 3 parts of a thesis statement generally include the subject, the precise opinion, and the blueprint of reasons.
First, identify the subject or topic of your paper. This is the broad area that your research or essay will cover.
Next, you need to formulate a precise opinion on your chosen subject. This assertion gives your paper a unique angle and a clear direction.
Finally, the blueprint of reasons outlines the main points or arguments you will use to support your opinion. These will form the body of your essay or research paper.
Now that we’ve outlined the 3 parts, let’s talk about how to start.
- Brainstorm: Begin by brainstorming ideas related to your topic. This is a crucial step that helps in defining your precise opinion and blueprint of reasons.
- Narrow down: Based on your brainstorming, narrow down your focus to a specific aspect of your topic.
- Write a working thesis statement: Craft a working thesis statement based on your narrowed-down focus. This statement doesn’t need to be perfect yet, but it should serve as a guide for your research or writing process.
- Refine: As your research progresses, refine your thesis statement. Make sure it clearly communicates your argument and the main points that support it.
- Review and Revise: Once your essay or research paper is complete, revisit your thesis statement. Ensure it still aligns with the arguments you presented in your paper.
By following these steps, you can construct a good thesis statement that will steer your paper towards a compelling argument.
Tips for Creating Effective Thesis Statements
Here are ten straightforward tips to make your thesis statement effective and engaging.
- Focus on Detail: Your thesis statement should clearly outline your main argument. Avoid vagueness and stay precise.
- Create a Spark: Make your thesis statement thought-provoking. It should incite a reader to think about the subject in depth.
- Keep it Brief: Short, crisp sentences often make the strongest statements. Aim to keep your thesis within one or two lines.
- Locate it Right: Position your thesis statement at the end of your introduction. It provides a smooth transition into the main body.
- Use Solid Evidence: Make sure each part of your thesis can be supported with concrete evidence from your research.
- Mirror Your Structure: Your thesis should give a glimpse into how your essay or paper is organized.
- Ensure Consistency: The entire content of your paper should align with the thesis statement, reinforcing your main argument.
- Avoid Being Predictable : Stay away from cliches or commonly used structures. Let your unique voice shine through your thesis.
- Revise if Required: As you delve deeper into your topic, you may need to tweak your thesis statement to better fit your findings.
- Welcome Feedback: Constructive critique can help refine your thesis statement, making it more compelling and clear.
Thesis Statement Format
A well-structured thesis statement generally follows this format:
- Subject : This is the primary topic or subject of your research or essay.
- Claim/Position : This is your stance or claim about the subject. It’s the argument you will be supporting throughout your paper.
- Supporting Points : These are the main points or ideas that you will use to back up your claim.
Here’s an example in a simple format:
[Subject] + [Claim/Position] + [Supporting Points]
This could look like:
“Exposure to sunlight (subject) has significant health benefits (claim/position) including boosting vitamin D levels, improving mood, and regulating sleep (supporting points) .”
Remember, your thesis statement should be concise, clear, and should directly answer the question or task set in the assignment.
Blank Thesis Statement
Here’s a blank outline for a thesis statement that you can use as a starting point:
“[Your Subject] is significant because it [Your Claim/Position], due to [Your Supporting Points].”
Simply fill in the blanks with your specific details. Remember, the subject is what you’re discussing, the claim/position is your argument about the subject, and the supporting points are the reasons or evidence that back up your claim.

But writing a good thesis can be hard at times!
In this blog, we’ll explore various thesis statement examples for different types of essays—from argumentative to informative—so you can get an idea of how to come up with your own. We’ll also look at sample thesis for research papers.
Let’s start!
On this Page
Thesis Statement Definition
A thesis statement is a single sentence that sums up the main point or argument of an essay. It tells readers what to expect in the paper and provides a clear focus for the writer.
Usually found at the end of the introduction, a strong thesis statement is specific and debatable, meaning it can be supported with evidence and discussed in depth.
In the coming sections, we will take a look at a number of strong thesis statement examples you can use to improve your writing.
Thesis Statement Examples for Different Essay Types
Now that we understand what a thesis statement is, let's take a look at some examples for different types of essays . These examples will show you how to tailor your thesis depending on the type of essay you're writing.
Thesis Statement Examples for Argumentative Essay
Your thesis statement in an argumentative essay should clearly state your position on the topic and hint at the supporting points you'll discuss. It needs to be assertive, as you're trying to convince your readers of your viewpoint.
For example, an argumentative thesis should take a stance on a debatable issue and prepare the reader for the evidence that will follow in your body paragraphs.
Argumentative Thesis Statements Examples :
- "Although social media has many benefits, its negative effects on mental health, including increased anxiety and depression, are too significant to ignore."
- "Gun control laws should be stricter in the United States to prevent mass shootings and ensure public safety."
- "Climate change is an urgent global crisis that requires immediate governmental action to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy."
- "Online education is just as effective as traditional classroom learning when it is properly structured and supported by technology."
- "The death penalty should be abolished because it is an ineffective deterrent to crime and disproportionately affects minority communities."
Thesis Statement Examples for Informative Essay
An informative essay has the purpose of educating or informing your audience about a topic, rather than to argue a point. Therefore, your thesis statement should be neutral and straightforward, simply outlining what your essay will explain or discuss.
Informative Thesis Statement Examples :
- "The history of the Eiffel Tower reveals a story of architectural innovation, cultural significance, and global influence."
- "The process of recycling involves various steps, including collection, sorting, and repurposing materials to reduce waste and environmental impact."

- "The impact of sleep on physical and mental health can be understood by exploring its role in memory retention, emotional regulation, and overall well-being."
- "The solar system consists of eight planets that orbit the Sun, each with unique characteristics, atmospheres, and potential for discovery."
Thesis Statement Examples for Narrative Essays
Narrative essays are a bit different from other types because they tell a story, usually from the writer’s personal experience.
In a narrative essay, the thesis statement sets the stage for the lesson or message that the story will convey. It’s not just about summarizing events but reflecting on their significance.
Examples of Narrative Thesis Statements :
- "The summer I spent at my grandparents’ farm taught me the importance of patience and hard work."
- "Traveling to a foreign country opened my eyes to the beauty of different cultures and the value of stepping out of my comfort zone."
- "Learning to ride a bike as a child taught me that failure is not the end, but an opportunity to grow."
- "My first job at a local restaurant gave me a sense of responsibility and independence that I carry with me today."
- "Overcoming my fear of public speaking in high school was a transformative experience that boosted my confidence."
Thesis Statement Examples for Compare and Contrast Essays
In a compare and contrast essay , your goal is to examine similarities and differences between two or more subjects. The thesis statement should make it clear what the comparison is and what the writer’s analysis will focus on.
This type of essay needs a thesis that highlights the main points of comparison. It could either be organized around similarities, differences, or both.
Examples of Compare and Contrast Thesis Statements :
- "While both city life and country living offer unique benefits, city life provides more opportunities for career growth, while country living offers a stronger sense of community."
- "The two novels, 'The Great Gatsby' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' both explore themes of social injustice but do so through different historical settings and characters."

- "Though both electric cars and hybrid cars aim to reduce environmental impact, electric cars are more eco-friendly because they produce zero emissions."
- "While traditional fast food and healthy eating both have their merits, fast food tends to be more convenient and affordable, whereas healthy eating offers long-term health benefits."

Cause and Effect Thesis Statement Examples
In a cause and effect essay , the thesis statement should clearly explain the relationship between two events or situations—what caused something to happen and the resulting effects. Your thesis will act as a roadmap for the cause-effect structure of the essay.
Examples of Cause and Effect Thesis Statements :
- "The rise of social media has caused a significant shift in how people communicate, leading to both increased connectivity and decreased face-to-face interaction."
- "The widespread use of technology in education has led to improved access to information but has also created a dependency on devices."

- "Climate change, caused by human activities such as deforestation and industrialization, is leading to rising global temperatures and more frequent natural disasters."
Analytical Thesis Statement Examples
An analytical essay involves breaking down a topic into its parts and explaining how those parts contribute to the whole. The thesis statement in an analytical essay should present the topic being analyzed and the main points you will cover in your essay.
Examples of Analytical Thesis Statements :
- "In George Orwell’s '1984,' the use of language as a tool for control demonstrates how oppressive governments can manipulate truth and limit individual freedom."

How to Write a Strong Thesis Statement
Without a good thesis statement, your writing will have the reader confused right from the start. It should hint to the reader about what’s to come as they continue reading. To write a thesis statement, you should:
- Start with a Question
Think about the main question your essay will answer. For example, if you’re writing about social media’s effects, you might ask, "How does social media impact communication?"
- Take a Stand
Your thesis should present a clear opinion or argument. For example, "Social media has significantly changed communication by reducing face-to-face interactions and promoting online conversations."
- Be Specific
Avoid vague language. Instead of saying, "Technology affects communication," be more detailed: "Social media decreases personal connections and fosters a culture of brief online interactions."
- Make it Debatable
A strong thesis invites discussion. It should not be a simple fact but something others could disagree with, like, "While social media connects people globally, it limits the depth of personal relationships."
- Place it at the End of Your Introduction
The thesis statement usually comes at the end of the introduction to guide readers through the essay.
