ClassDojo: Connecting Schools, Teachers, Parents, and Students for Learning

In an increasingly digital world, education has been revolutionized by technology. ClassDojo is an educational technology platform that aims to improve communication and engagement between teachers, students, and parents in a school setting. Initially founded in 2011 by Sam Chaudhary and Liam Don, ClassDojo has become a staple in classrooms worldwide, enhancing communication, engagement, and collaboration among schools, teachers, parents, and students.

Overview of ClassDojo:

ClassDojo offers a range of tools and features designed to foster a positive classroom culture, enhance student learning, and keep parents informed about their child’s progress. It aims to create a more interconnected learning experience by bridging the gap between classroom activities and home environments. The platform operates through a website and a mobile app, offering a user-friendly interface for seamless interaction.

ClassDojo Highlights for Schools and Teachers:

  • Classroom Management: Teachers use ClassDojo to manage their classrooms by assigning students positive or negative points (called “Dojo Points”) for behavior, participation, and other activities.
  • Behavior Tracking: It helps teachers track student behavior trends over time, which can aid in identifying areas for improvement and celebrating positive behaviors.
  • Messaging: Teachers can communicate with parents through messaging features, sharing updates, assignments, and important announcements.
  • Photos and Videos: Teachers can post pictures and videos of classroom activities, projects, and events, allowing parents to see what their child is doing at school.
  • Portfolios: ClassDojo can be used to create digital portfolios showcasing student work, progress, and achievements over time.

How Schools Benefit:

Schools leverage ClassDojo to create a digital ecosystem that promotes transparency and cooperation. ClassDojo enables schools to streamline communication, making it easier for administrators to share important announcements, event updates, and school news. It can serve as a hub for school-wide initiatives and provide a centralized platform for educators, parents, and students to connect and collaborate.

Empowering Teachers:

ClassDojo is a multifaceted tool that enhances classroom management, instruction, and teacher engagement. One of its primary functions is real-time behavior tracking and reward systems. Teachers can award students points for positive behaviors like participation, teamwork, or helping others. This gamified approach fosters a positive classroom culture and encourages students to develop valuable skills beyond traditional academics.

Additionally, teachers can share updates on classroom activities, assignments, and announcements through the platform. They can post photos, videos, and notes to showcase students’ work and highlight learning moments. This enables parents to gain deeper insights into their children’s education and daily experiences.

ClassDojo Highlights for Parents:

  • Communication: Parents can receive real-time updates on their child’s behavior, achievements, and activities in the classroom, helping them stay connected to their child’s education.
  • Messaging: Parents can communicate directly with teachers through the messaging feature, enabling them to ask questions and get updates.
  • Visibility: ClassDojo gives parents a window into their child’s daily school life, allowing them to see photos, videos, and messages from the classroom.
  • Engagement: Parents can provide positive reinforcement and encouragement at home based on the feedback and information shared on ClassDojo.

Engaging Parents:

ClassDojo transforms parent-teacher communication by offering a consistent channel for updates and discussions. Parents can access the platform to receive real-time updates on their child’s academic progress, behavior, and accomplishments. This level of involvement allows parents to actively support their child’s learning journey actively, reinforcing positive behaviors and promptly addressing challenges.

Furthermore, parents can engage in conversations with teachers through private messaging. This open line of communication facilitates dialogue about their child’s needs, strengths, and areas for improvement. Parents can provide more targeted support at home by clearly understanding their child’s educational experience.

ClassDojo Highlights for Students:

  • Behavior Recognition: Students receive positive reinforcement through Dojo Points, promoting good behavior and participation in class activities.
  • Visual Feedback: The platform allows students to see their progress and behavior trends, fostering a sense of responsibility for their actions.
  • Digital Portfolio: Students can view and reflect on their work and accomplishments in their digital portfolios.

Empowering Students:

ClassDojo places students at the center of their educational journey by encouraging active participation and self-awareness. Through the platform, students can track their progress, set personal goals, and reflect on their achievements. The reward system reinforces a growth mindset, where students learn that effort and positive behavior lead to success.

Moreover, the interactive nature of ClassDojo can help shy or introverted students express themselves more comfortably. They can share their thoughts questions, and work with their peers, building their confidence and communication skills.

ClassDojo Privacy and Security:

Given the sensitive nature of educational data, ClassDojo strongly emphasizes privacy and security. The platform complies with various regulations, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in the United States. Personal information is securely stored, and parents control what information is shared.

Conclusion:

ClassDojo’s impact on modern education substantially reshapes how schools, teachers, parents, and students collaborate and communicate. The platform creates a more enriching learning experience for all parties by fostering community, transparency, and engagement. It bridges the gap between classroom and home, facilitating a continuous student support and growth cycle. As technology continues to reshape education, ClassDojo is a testament to the positive possibility of digital tools in fostering meaningful learning environments.

Class Dojo Student Portfolio

Do you wish you had a quick (and fun) way of showing parents class work? Need a way for students to share what they have learned about a topic? How about a great way to answer the ever present “Teacher, teacher! I’m done! What do I do next?”

One answer: Class Dojo Student Portfolios!

This feature is a GAME CHANGER. Class Dojo evolved SO much with this exciting addition to the program. Let’s take a closer look at what you can do with Class Dojo’s Student Portfolio feature.

Creating an Assignment

To create an assignment you will need to go to Portfolios then click on the +

You have a choice of the type of assignment you want to make. In this example I chose text. You can also choose photo, video, or drawing.

Completing an Assignment

From the student interface, assignments will be posted on top and labeled “To Do.” Students then open the assignment, complete it, and click “Turn In.”

Once a student submits their work, it is not posted on their portfolio quite yet! Your next goal is to approve or disapprove the work.

Approving an Assignment

But what happens if a student completes the assignment incorrectly? Luckily, Class Dojo thought of this! You are able to send the assignment back to the student so they can edit their work!

Teachers can use the website to mark the daily attendance, pick pupils for assignments, motivate them, time each task, and easily communicate with parents.

I feel that the website’s biggest benefit is that it fosters a positive learning culture where students can receive positive feedback and can be rewarded for skills like “Being Respectful” or “Working Hard”.

Moreover, it gives students a voice of their own thanks to the ability to create portfolios where students can add photos and videos of their own. Involving parents into your classroom activities is a great feature too because it pushes parents into paying more attention and contributing to their child’s education. Teachers can share photos and videos of moments in the classroom that will draw increased engagement from both students and parents.

ALSO READ: CLASSROOM SCREEN – FUN & FREE TEACHER TOOLS

Additionally, ClassDojo has an immediate (and positive) effect on students. The website has a points system and many teachers have noted that they have seen better engagement from students as they try to obtain more points.

For instance,  you can set a task and offer a dojo as a reward for completing the task, something that is sure to kindle the competitive spirit of even the most disinterested students. In addition to that, since parents can be kept in the loop about their kids’ progress, it will be easier to break the ice during a parents meeting!

When the time comes for report writing, you can take a look at the levels you awarded and identify patterns or areas where a student has been struggling. Clicking on the reports tab will give you a pie chart that shows each aspect points have been awarded for – this pie chart can show the performance of the entire class or can be narrowed down to each student.

Other Uses of ClassDojo

class dojo assignment ideas

Points can also be awarded for aspects other than learning such as for leadership and life. If a student did the right  stuff  during a lesson, wore the correct uniform, or displayed leadership skills, you can then award them a  life point . On the same vein, you can award negative points for bad behavior. This can be turned into a source of discussion where you and the students discuss what happened, how to avoid it and what they can do to gain a positive  life point .

Signing up on ClassDojo

Creating an account on ClassDojo is a breeze and the sign up process takes no more than a few seconds. Create your  account here . The website is free and does not cost anything.

Setting up ClassDojo

ClassDojo is incredibly easy to set up, albeit a bit time consuming.

Protip Many find it easier to set up the system on a laptop rather than an iPad.

You will have to spend time adding all the group levels and entering the names of your students and then giving each an avatar of their own.

To get your parents and students onboard the programme, print out the details and give it straight to them.

ClassDojo Toolkit

ClassDojo toolkit

Play classroom songs that helps students focus, or make free time a little more fun. You’ll go ga-ga over this tool that gets your class groovin’. With 2 stations, “Focus” and “Active”, and instant casting to your classroom speakers, the Music tool is kind of magic.

Tired of constantly repeating yourself? Now you can easily display classroom directions, so students always know what they should be working on.

The  Random  feature is great for when you have to pick a student, no popsicle sticks required! It could be something as simple as an errand to the headmaster’s or to answer a question; this keeps the process of choosing unbiased and simple. Oh, and it is pretty fun to watch the children squirming around hoping it is not them!

Group Maker

A random group generator that helps you arrange students into pairs, threes, fours, or more.

Timer

The timer is a good visual tool during occasions where the pupils are working in teams. You can set a timer and let it count down to zero – this shows students how much time they have remaining and teaches them time management.

Noise Meter

You can show students the classroom noise visualized and encourage them to self-manage. The Noise Meter helps remind students what the appropriate volume should be in the classroom at specific times.

Think Pair Share

With one tap of the the Think Pair Share tool you can display a question. Student pairs can collaborate together to solve harder problems, have 1-1 discussions, and work on their teamwork.

Award Multiple

This feature can be used to award students for things like arriving at school on time or during sessions where the whole class has been performing well.

Commenting

ClassDojo’s commenting feature lets you note down any issues that the parents or school management need to know. Other than that, it lets the parents get involved and inquire about the issues and their children. It is perfect for parent conferences because you have all the information noted down and there are no surprises for anyone.

ClassDojo Messenger

The messaging feature is effective for situations where you need to drop parents a quick text. You can even snap a quick photo of the student and send it to their parents or use it to inform them about anything of concern or moments of celebration! Handy, isn’t it? After all, what parent does not like occasional reminders (or pictures!) of their student.

Reset Bubbles

This allows you to reset the points. We recommend that you do this every week because it allows students to reflect on the points and what they can do to increase it.

Weighted Feedback

This lets you decide on the key feedback types you want to follow in class. You can even let the kids choose which feedback types to weigh; not only does this make learning more fun but also gives them extra motivation to earn it!

Big Idea: Student Relationships Matter Most

Kayla Hartsfield

Turning a classroom into a successful and productive learning environment isn’t done through just one thing, but there is one thing that I’ve seen affect it more than most: helping my students build up stronger relationships with each other. These relationships will turn a classroom full of individual students into a supportive family, one where students can be found helping one another and celebrating each other’s accomplishments on a daily basis.

There are two “big ideas” that have worked for me and I hope will for you too: The Shout Out Door and a Book Recommendation area.

Four Mindful Back-to-School Questions to Build Emotional Intelligence

Picture a middle school student who we’ll call Ethan. He entered third period today with a scowl on his face. He squirms and fidgets in his chair, unable to focus. When his teacher asks him about last night’s homework, he bristles with annoyance and says he didn’t do the assignment. It’s not clear why Ethan appears angry, and chances are Ethan may be a little unsure himself.

How One Teacher is Teaching Her Students to be Kind

Interview between Janice Walton (Getting Smart) and Stacy Weber (fifth-grade dual language Teacher at Westwood Elementary in Woodstock, Illinois) .

Kindness is a relatively easy word to define–according to Google it means “the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate.” Easy enough, right? Then why is “kindness” often so hard to put into practice? How do we go about teaching and learning kindness? I recently spoke with Stacy Weber, a fifth-grade teacher in a dual language program in Woodstock, Illinois, to shed some light on this and understand how she’s teaching kindness.

Give Homework an F! (or three)

Melody McAllister

Whether you follow educators on Twitter, parents on Facebook, or just talk to any student, you could get an earful about how they feel regarding homework. As a teacher and parent myself, I absolutely HATE homework. I hate it for the same reasons any working parent hates it, but I probably hate it even more because I am a teacher. It is a time suck!

Using Technology to Build Partnerships with Parents

Tasia Fields

Building a positive classroom environment isn’t just about what happens inside a classroom, it’s about building a classroom community without walls, one that includes and engages parents and caregivers. Research has shown that students with involved parents and caregivers, regardless of background, are more likely to be successful in academics and develop better social skills.

How To Create a Strong Teacher-Parent Team This School Year

As a teacher, I’ve been blessed to have positive relationships with parents since the first day of my career. The friendships I’ve formed with parents last far longer than a 10-month school calendar, and they are among the aspects of teaching that I cherish most.

Recently, during a camping trip, a colleague asked how I knew so many of our students’ parents by name. Developing relationships with her students’ parents was difficult for her, she admitted. She’s a good teacher and a wonderful person, but parents have not warmed up to her easily. In speaking to other teachers, I learned she is not alone. Thankfully, there are several proactive steps teachers can take to ensure the relationships they have with their students’ parents are helpful and rewarding.

Let’s Hear It For M-M-Mindset Monday!

Danielle Dagilis

It’s M-M-M Mindset Monday! That’s what the students at Walter Reed Middle School, in Studio City, CA, hear over the loudspeaker each week. And they pay special attention because it’s an announcement made by their fellow students.

What is Mindset Monday all about? And why do we do it?

How We Changed the Culture of Our School – And You Can Too!

Claire Jones

Five years ago our school had: children with fixed mindsets, no consistent school wide culture policy, and no way of instantly celebrating achievements with each other and parents. Fast forward to today and it’s like walking into a different school…

Why is that?

How ClassDojo and Responsive Classroom Work Together

Cindy Price

You may be one of those teachers who’s thinking about how ClassDojo and Responsive Classroom can go together. I know I was! If you’re not familiar with the term, Responsive Classroom is founded on the belief that students and teachers work as a team and create the rules and expectations of the classroom together. This gives them a sense of ownership and decision making in the classroom. It can be done during a morning meeting – which is the approach I take. Only the way I do it is to incorporate ClassDojo!

Three Ways to Help All Children to Value Others’ Differences As Well As Their Own

Carissa Holloway

Today, they would call me an introvert, but when I was a child, the label was “shy.”

I remember the challenges of wanting to demonstrate to my teacher that I was paying attention or mastering concepts but often felt intimidated by participating in class.

The classroom was an overstimulating environment. The number of people and all that surrounded me was enough to hinder my thoughts, let alone the fact that I was expected to process and interact. Unable to keep up, I would quickly shut down.

Today, I teach at first grade in the very same school where I struggled as a student. Though I now enter this building as a teacher, I still struggle as an introvert in an extrovert-dominated career. But I’m reminded of why I became a teacher.

All the classroom tools you love are now in one place ❤ Make random groups of students. Display activity directions. Turn on background music. And there’s so much more to come.
