I’m really sorry, but “shinobi” is a Japanese word. There are some other inaccuracies in the ninja summary worksheet, too.
Thank you for all the wonderful resources anyway!

Awesome. This has become my go-to site for testing my students’ reading comprehension. Keep it up!
I love your website my kids benefit so much from everything you do! THANK YOU!!

This has been a great find. I love the stories and so do my students. I have particularly found the nondiction passages wonderful – the ones which appear in their reading books are often bland and not engaging – and so do my students. They’re learning so much and it’s stirring their curiosity to do their digging about the topics they most enjoy.
Since comprehension questions in our part of the world are not mcqs – they are usuallyquestions which require short answers – I usually dowload the passages and prepare my own questions, with maybe one or two mcqs from your question bank thrown in. Thus, my students cannot find answers and it makes them do the hard work of comprehending the passages.
I also underline some of the words and phrases and ask them to find words or phrases which mean the same and can replace them in the passage – that’s another important component of questions asked on reading comprehension passages in my part of the world, Ghana. Maybe those complaining about cheaters can use some of these strategies. They can also tweak the questions on this site to do away with cheating.
Mr. Morton, you’re amazing. Love, love this site. My students and I are the better for it.

Hello from Panama, this website has proven so helpful to help my students study for the TOEFL

Good Morning may we use the Redwoods and Arm Races Story for our study? I would like to say that the story and questionnaire will be a big help if you allow us to use your story to our study.
Of course. Best wishes!

Honestly, I am writing this short message from the far lower corner of Africa, all the way from Namibia. Coming across this website has just proven to me that truly good people still exist in this world,as opposed to my traditional name which means “Good people are extinct.” I am so grateful to the person who shared all this helpful and precious information. May God continue to fill your heart and life with gifts overflowing upto an eternal fold. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. I appreciate the kind words and hearing your story. I wish you the greatest possible success in all your endeavors.

Whoever you are behind this resource, know that you are a good person and I am grateful for making such superb materials available to us. I am in Ghana, West Africa. You’ve made life a lot easier. Do you have a button to which those who wish to make a small number of donations can go?
This website is supported by advertisements. No need for donations! But I am very happy that you like the site and took the time to comment. Best wishes!

Excellent passages
I am looking for material for a 10-12 reading comprehension class. Your materials are great, but a lower interest level from HS students. Any suggestions for upper levels?
Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful worksheets!
JHANNET VELÁSQUEZ
EXCELLENT WEBSITE!
Excellent and the really valuable resource.
Delores J. Mayes
My students has searched and found the answer keys to these readings. I wish there was a way the teacher’s could sign in for the content and keep the cheaters from having the honest kids miss out on these readings. What has our world gone to. This is so sad that my students would copy answers word for word and expect to get a 100% as well as their parents. We are growing a nation of untruth and cheaters.
Yeah, that is pretty frustrating.
It’s tough to keep the content free and open while preventing students from finding the answers.
One thing that might help is downloading the .RTF file and editing the titles of the assignments. A persistent student will still be able to find the answers, but that may make it a little harder.
Also, remember, cheaters are only cheating themselves! And the system and everyone else too, but mainly themselves! Best wishes!
Hi Ma’am Dolores. That happened to me years ago during the MDL (modular distance learning) in our country, Philippines. You know what I did, I shorten my URLs and add number 1 at the end of it. This way, they can no longer trace my resources.

Free Leveled Reading Comprehension Passages
- January 2022
Are you always struggling to find quality, leveled reading comprehension passages for your special education students?
Then look no further.
These worksheets were created to make special the planning process easier for teachers like you! Whether you are planning for your literacy instruction or just need a tool to progress monitor an IEP goal, these worksheets are great.
We have all have been inundated with all the things that we need to plan and differentiate for. The worksheets do all the work for you which will make your life so much easier!
I have created 225 passages for you and even some FREE worksheets for you to try! Therefore, that is enough reading comprehension passages to last a whole school year and even summer school! Keep reading for your FREE passages!
Let me tell you about them!
Do these Reading Comprehension Passages Really work?
Comprehension is really difficult for students in special education. However, having an organized and predictable routine can make such a difference! The more practice that students can get with comprehension, the better chance they have of understanding it. In other words, all of the worksheets are in the same format so that the students really understand what is expected from them. However, you would love these ones!
What are the different levels for the reading comprehension passages?
LEVEL EMERGENT (easiest)
- passages are shorter and a bit easier to read (or read by the adult)
- there are only 3 questions
- only works on Who, What, and Where
- visual cues for non-verbal learners
- finding the evidence only works on highlighting specific words
- cut and paste options
LEVEL ONE (easier)
- passages are shorter and a bit easier to read
- multiple-choice questions
LEVEL TWO (harder)
- passages are longer and a bit harder to read
- there are 4 questions
- works on Who, What, Where, and When
- open-ended questions
- finding the evidence needs to go back and read
How to use these passages with my students:
have your students:
- read the passage 3 times
- color the star after each read
- answer the comprehension questions
- find the keywords (if applicable)
- find the evidence (if applicable)
Similarly, you can also use these as a tool for collecting data for your IEP goals related to comprehension.
What is included in a Month's Bundle?
One month of reading passages will provide you with 45 passages of reading comprehension practice. Each worksheet has a short passage, 3-4 WH questions, focusing on Who, What, Where, and When Questions (I have left out the Why as this is a very difficult question and students struggle with this and so I will work on it separately). Students are asked to read the passage 3 times, answer the questions and go back to find some evidence. After that, you will have enough for the whole month!
You will get:
- 3 different levels of each passage
- 15 different passages
What grade level are these passages?
Although these passages do not have a specific level attached to them, I have designed them to be in the first – second-grade ballpark. Those students who are unable to read the passages will still be able to have the passages read to them and answer the comprehension questions.
What makes these reading comprehension passages so unique?
The reading comprehension passages are differentiated and so you are able to work with students who can answer open-ended questions, multiple-choice questions, and students who need visual supports all in the same reading group. You can have a fully-included literacy instruction lesson! For instance, you can have 3 different grade leveled-students sitting at your reading group using the same passages. AMAZING!
Another thing that I just couldn't find in other passages, were the visual field of 4 options, and for students who needed that cut and paste option. However, I could find these types of things in different formats, but I wanted it all in one resource.
I knew I had to create an emergent level for students well below grade level.

Are there any passages for secondary students?
Similarly, I am currently working on a real-image-only bundle that would be for secondary students . Or really any student that would prefer real images to clipart.
This is something that I am continuously working on this year. For instance, I am currently creating a few bundles (December and January) but they are taking me a long time to find just the right pictures to use for these passages. You can find them here!
Okay, I am ready to try these passages out, where are the FREE ones?

Adult (ABE) teaching tips
Accept the challenge.
As you know, ABE teachers are unique in that they often have English language learners (ELLs) and native English speakers in the same class. They may even have learners who are pre-literate in their home language so they are learning to read for the 1st time in English. ABE teachers also have learners who are adults with undiagnosed learning disabilities. So it’s hard to be specific because ABE instruction entails many different types of learners with a huge spectrum of literacy, education, and skills so there are many different strategies that could apply.
Teaching ABE learners
For ABE learners, have students complete cloze passages. Provide instruction in comprehension strategies, such as using headings and graphics to predict meaning. Teach and model summarizing verbally, skimming, and scanning skills. Assess learners’ reading comprehension by having them read texts and answer comprehension questions about the text in multiple choice or short answers. Have students summarize readings orally and in writing.
Teaching ELLs
For ELLs, find out what students know, need to know, and want to know. Then build on ideas and concepts from learners’ cultures and experiences whenever possible. Select readings on topics they may be familiar with. Pre-teach vocabulary and preview unfamiliar ideas, actions, vocabulary, and settings as well as titles, pictures, graphics, text structure, and even punctuation. Use videos, images, and physical objects to help learners build background knowledge. Assess learner comprehension through short answers, cloze exercises, and summary writing only after pre-teaching vocabulary, previewing cultural contexts, and discussing the text in pairs, small groups, or as a class.
