टेस्ला के मालिक एलन मस्क ने सोशल मीडिया कंपनी ट्विटर को खरीदने के लिए डील की है और इस कारण लगातार सुर्खियों में बने हुए है.

खरबों रुपये की इस डील से अंदाज़ा लगाना मुश्किल नहीं है कि मस्क दुनिया के सबसे मालदार शख्सियत हैं. लेकिन बहुत पुरानी बात नहीं है जब उनकी कंपनी पैसों की तंगी से जूझ रही थी और साल 2018 में कई दिक्कतों से जूझ रही थी.

तिजोरी तेज़ी से खाली हो रही थी और कंपनी दिवालिया होने की कगार पर थी. कंपनी के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी के तौर पर एलन मस्क दिन में 22-22 घंटे फैक्ट्री में गुज़ार रहे थे.

बाद में एक इंटरव्यू में एलन मस्क ने भी खुद माना कि कंपनी ख़त्म होने वाली थी.

लेकिन दो साल में हालात बदले. कार बाज़ार में उतरी भी नहीं थी और कंपनी के शेयर आश्चर्यजनक रूप से बढ़ रहे थे. इनमें 50 फीसदी से अधिक की बढ़ोतरी देखी गई. 2020 में लगातार चार तिमाही में कंपनी को प्रॉफिट हुआ. कोरोना महामारी के दौर में जब कार कंपनियां सेमीकंडक्टर की कमी से जूझ रही थीं, टेस्ला रिकॉर्ड प्रॉफिट कर रही थी.

021 में कंपनी का बाज़ार मूल्य 1.2 ट्रिलियन डॉलर तक हो गया और एपल, माइक्रोसॉफ्ट, एल्फ़ाबेट, अमेज़न के बाद टेस्ला दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी कंपनियों की सूची में शुमार हो गई. कार कंपनियों में, ये सबसे तेज़ी से 1 ट्रिलियन के आंकड़े तक पहुंची थी और ब्रांड वैल्यू के मामले में भी सबसे बड़ी बन गई थी.

कौन हैं एलन मस्क और क्या-क्या करते हैं?

एलन मस्क के काम का दायरा सिर्फ़ भविष्य की कारें बनाने वाली कंपनी तक सीमित नहीं है. उनकी कंपनी टेस्ला इलेक्ट्रिक कारों में लगने वाले पुर्ज़े और बैट्रियाँ बनाती है जिन्हें दूसरे कार निर्माताओं को बेचा जाता है.

वे घरों में लगने वाले 'सोलर एनर्जी सिस्टम' बनाते हैं जिसकी माँग वक़्त के साथ बढ़ी है. वे एक अंतरिक्ष अन्वेषण कंपनी भी चलाते हैं. साथ ही वे अमेरिका में 'सुपर-फ़ास्ट अंडरग्राउंड ट्रांसपोर्ट सिस्टम' का ख़ाका तैयार कर रहे हैं.

आज के समय में एलन मस्क की पहचान एक अमेरिकी उद्यमी के तौर पर है, पर उनका जन्म दक्षिण अफ़्रीका में हुआ था. उनकी माँ मूल रूप से कनाडा की हैं और पिता दक्षिण अफ़्रीका के. मस्क के अनुसार, उन्हें बचपन से ही किताबें पढ़ने का बहुत शौक़ था.

वे कहते हैं कि 'बचपन में मैं बहुत ज़्यादा शांत रहता था, इस वजह से मुझे बहुत परेशान भी किया गया.'

10 साल की उम्र में एलन मस्क ने कम्यूटर प्रोग्रामिंग सीखी और 12 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने 'ब्लास्टर' नामक एक वीडियो गेम तैयार किया जिसे एक स्थानीय मैग्ज़ीन ने उनसे पाँच सौ अमेरिकी डॉलर में ख़रीदा. इसे मस्क की पहली 'व्यापारिक उपलब्धि' कहा जा सकता है.

49 वर्षीय एलन मस्क के बिज़नेस की शुरुआत असल में साल 1999 में हुई, जब उन्होंने और उनके भाई किंबल ने अपनी सॉफ़्टवेयर कंपनी 'ज़िप-2' के लिए एक सफल डील तलाश ली.

इससे मिले पैसे को, 27 वर्ष की उम्र में मस्क ने एक नई कंपनी में लगाया जिसका नाम था 'एक्स डॉट कॉम' और इस कंपनी का दावा था कि 'वो पैसा ट्रांसफ़र करने की व्यवस्था में क्रांति लाने वाली है.'

मस्क की इसी कंपनी को आज 'पे-पाल' के नाम से जाना जाता है जिसे साल 2002 में ई-बेय ने ख़रीद लिया था और इसके लिए मस्क को 165 मिलियन डॉलर मिले थे. यह उनके करियर की बड़ी उपलब्धि थी.

इसके बाद मस्क ने अंतरिक्ष अन्वेषण की तकनीकों पर काम करना शुरू किया. उनके इसी प्रोग्राम को 'स्पेस-एक्स' का नाम दिया गया जिसने कहा कि 'मनुष्य आने वाले वक़्त में दूसरे ग्रहों पर भी रह सकेंगे.'

साल 2004 में एलन मस्क ने इलेक्ट्रिक कार कंपनी टेस्ला की बुनियाद रखी और उन्होंने कहा, "भविष्य में सब कुछ इलेक्ट्रिक होगा, स्पेस में जाने वाले रॉकेट भी और टेस्ला इस बदलाव को लाने में अहम भूमिका निभायेगी."

मस्क की सफलता का राज़ क्या है?

बीबीसी के संवाददाता जस्टिन रॉलेट ने एलन मस्क से एक साक्षात्कार के दौरान यह प्रश्न पूछा था कि 'आपकी सफलता का राज़ क्या है?' और रॉलेट को इसका जो जवाब समझ आया वो है: 'एलन मस्क का बिज़नेस के प्रति 'एटिट्यूड' यानी व्यापार और अपने काम को लेकर उनका अलग नज़रिया.'

कुछ वर्ष पहले हुए इस साक्षात्कार में मस्क ने कहा था, "मैं नहीं जानता कि मेरे पास कितनी संपत्ति है. ये इस तरह से नहीं है कि कहीं नोट के बंडल पड़े हुए हैं. इसे ऐसे देखना चाहिए कि टेस्ला, स्पेस-एक्स और सोलर सिटी में मेरी हिस्सेदारी है और बाज़ार में उस हिस्सेदारी की कुछ क़ीमत है. पर मुझे वाक़ई इससे फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता क्योंकि मेरे काम करने का लक्ष्य ये नहीं है."

रॉलेट लिखते हैं कि 'मस्क का यह नज़रिया शायद काम कर रहा है. उनके पास आज जितनी संपत्ति है, उसमें वे चाहें तो दुनिया की कई बड़ी कार निर्माता कंपनियों को एक साथ ख़रीद सकते हैं. वे इस साल 50 वर्ष के हो जायेंगे, पर एक 'दौलतमंद शख़्स' के तौर पर दुनिया को अलविदा कहने का उनका सपना बिल्कुल नहीं है.'

मस्क कहते हैं कि वे मंगल ग्रह पर एक बेस बनाने में अपनी पूंजी का सबसे बड़ा हिस्सा लगाना चाहते हैं और उन्हें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं होगा अगर उन्होंने इस मिशन को सफल बनाने में अपनी सारी पूंजी लगा दी.

मंगल ग्रह पर मनुष्यों का एक बेस, मस्क की नज़र में बहुत बड़ी सफलता होगी.

वे मानते हैं कि 'इससे भविष्य बेहतर होगा.' स्पेस-एक्स की स्थापना को लेकर भी बीबीसी से हुए साक्षात्कार में मस्क ने कहा था, "मैंने कंपनी इसलिए बनाई क्योंकि मैं इस बात से असंतुष्ट था कि अमेरिकी स्पेस एजेंसी अंतरिक्ष अन्वेषण को लेकर और महत्वकांक्षी क्यों नहीं है, वो क्यों और आगे का नहीं सोच पा रही. मैं उम्मीद करता हूँ कि भविष्य में चाँद और मंगल ग्रह पर हमारा बेस हो और वहाँ के लिए लगातार फ़्लाइट्स चलें."

'लोग मुझे इंजीनियर के रूप में जानें'

मस्क चाहते हैं कि लोग उन्हें एक निवेशक से ज़्यादा, एक इंजीनियर के रूप में जानें. रॉलेट से साक्षात्कार में उन्होंने कहा था, "मैं हर सुबह किसी नई तकनीकी समस्या का हल ढूंढने के लिए उठना चाहता हूँ. बैंक में कितना पैसा है, इसे मैं सफलता का पैमाना नहीं मानता."

रॉलेट लिखते हैं कि "मस्क कार उद्योग में क्रांतिकारी बदलाव लाना चाहते हैं, वे मंगल ग्रह पर कॉलोनी बनाना चाहते हैं, वैक्यूम टनल में चलने वाली सुपर-फ़ास्ट ट्रेनें चलाना चाहते हैं, मनुष्यों के दिमाग़ से एआई यानी आर्टिफ़िशयल इंटेलिजेंस को जोड़ना चाहते हैं और सौर उर्जा से दुनिया चलाना चाहते हैं. इन सब चीज़ों में एक चीज़ समान है, वो ये कि ऐसी भविष्य की कल्पनाएं आपको 1980 के दशक की शुरुआत में मिलने वाली बच्चों की पत्रिकाओं में मिलती थीं. और इसमें कोई छिपी हुई बात नहीं कि मस्क का बचपन दक्षिण अफ़्रीका में बहुत सारी पत्रिकाएं, क़िताबें पढ़कर और फ़िल्में देखकर गुज़रा."

मस्क बदलाव की धीमी गति में विश्वास नहीं रखते. वे जल्द से जल्द जीवाश्म ईंधनों को पीछे छोड़ देना चाहते हैं. साथ ही मानवता के अस्तित्व को लंबे समय तक बनाये रखने के लिए वे मंगल ग्रह पर उपनिवेश विकसित करने के पक्षधर हैं.

जोख़िम उठाने की आदत

एलन मस्क जोख़िम उठाने वाले शख़्स हैं और उन्होंने यह साबित किया है. 2008 में जब दुनिया ने आर्थिक मंदी का सामना किया तो मस्क की हालत भी काफ़ी ख़राब हो गई थी. इसके बाद उनकी नई कंपनियों ने कई असफलताएं देखीं. स्पेस-एक्स के पहले तीनों लॉन्च फ़ेल हुए. टेस्ला में भी उत्पादन से जुड़ी कई समस्याएं आती रहीं और मस्क तंगी में फँस गये.

अपने साक्षात्कार में एलन मस्क ने बताया था कि एक वक़्त ऐसा भी आया जब उन्हें अपने ख़र्चों के लिए दोस्तों से पैसे उधार लेने पड़े.

पर क्या उन्हें कभी दिवालिया होने का डर नहीं हुआ? इस सवाल के जवाब में एलन मस्क ने जस्टिन रॉलेट से कहा था, "ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा क्या होता, मेरे बच्चों को सरकारी स्कूल में जाना पड़ता, तो इसमें क्या बड़ी बात होती, मैं ख़ुद सरकारी स्कूल में पढ़ा हूँ."

काम करने की लत

एलन मस्क को क़रीब से जानने वाले कहते हैं कि उन्हें काम करने की लत है. टेस्ला मॉडल-3 को तैयार करते समय उन्होंने कहा था कि 'वे हफ़्ते में 120 घंटे काम करते हैं और उसमें उन्हें मज़ा आता है.'

कोरोना महामारी के दौरान जब सैन फ़्रांसिस्को स्थित उनकी फ़ैक्ट्री को बंद करना पड़ा, तो लॉकडाउन के प्रतिबंधों के ख़िलाफ़ एलन मस्क खुलकर बोले. उन्होंने कहा, 'जो लोग महामारी का हौवा बना रहे हैं, वो बेवक़ूफ़ हैं.' उन्होंने घर में रहने के आदेशों को 'ज़बरदस्ती' बताया और कहा कि 'कोविड लॉकडाउन संवैधानिक अधिकारों के ख़िलाफ़ है.'

महामारी के दौरान ही एलन मस्क के घर बेटे का जन्म हुआ. इस मौक़े पर उन्होंने ट्विटर के ज़रिये दुनिया को बताया कि उन्होंने बेटे का नाम X Æ A-12 रखा है.

कुछ लोग मानते हैं कि एलन मस्क के मन को पढ़ा नहीं जा सकता और उनके व्यवहार का पूर्वानुमान मुश्किल है. लेकिन इसका उनके काम पर ज़रा भी असर नहीं दिखता. बतौर उद्यमी वे एक दूरदर्शी इंसान हैं.

सितंबर, 2020 में उन्होंने कहा कि 'जल्द ही उनकी कंपनी की सभी कारें सेल्फ़ ड्राइविंग वाली होंगी.' वे अगले तीन वर्षों में सस्ती इलेक्ट्रिक कारें लाने का भी इरादा रखते हैं.

‘Elon Musk looking at Gujarat as first choice for Tesla factory’, says state minister

Gujarat govt 'very hopeful' of tesla setting up plant in state, says minister.

Gujarat minister Rushikesh Patel on Thursday said his government was "very hopeful" that Elon Musk-led Tesla will choose the state to set up a plant and informed communication was on with the firm in this regard.

Patel was responding to queries based on news reports suggesting that the US-based electric vehicle maker was planning to set up a manufacturing plant in Gujarat.

"The state government is very hopeful of Tesla coming to Gujarat. Even Elon Musk is looking at Gujarat as his first choice. Gujarat is in his mind ever since he began a survey in India to find a suitable location to set up the plant," said Patel, who is health minister and spokesperson of the state government.

"Perhaps, very soon, an official announcement will be made in this regard (Tesla's entry. Let us hope Tesla comes to Gujarat. We will definitely welcome it and provide all necessary support, just like we gave Tata, Ford and Suzuki in the past," Patel told reporters in Gandhinagar.

Patel said communication (with Tesla) was on and this may be the reason such news (of firm planning factory in the state) was published.

Notably, Elon Musk, chief of the world's largest electric car producer Tesla Inc, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June in New York. Musk, after meeting the Prime Minister, had said he plans to visit India in 2024.

In September, Gujarat's Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines Department) S J Haider said the Centre is in touch with Tesla to consider setting up a manufacturing facility in India.

He had said Gujarat will approach the company at an appropriate time to ensure the state has a significant role in the future plans.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had recently said Tesla is looking to source components worth around USD 1.9 billion from India this year against USD 1 billion last year.

‘Elon Musk,’ a Biography by Ashlee Vance, Paints a Driven Portrait

“We’ve become a nation of indoor cats,” Dave Eggers wrote in “A Hologram for the King” (2012), his existential novel about an American doing IT work in the Saudi Arabian desert. “A nation of doubters, worriers, overthinkers.”

Ashlee Vance, in his new biography of the celebrity industrialist Elon Musk, delivers a similar notion of the deflating American soul. An early Facebook engineer tells Mr. Vance, “The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads.” The author quotes the venture capitalist Peter Thiel: “We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters.”

If Silicon Valley was holding out for a hero after Steve Jobs’s death, a disrupter in chief, it has found a brawny one in Mr. Musk. This South African-born entrepreneur, inventor and engineer is the animating force behind companies (Tesla, SpaceX, SolarCity) that have made startling advances in non-indoor-cat arenas: electric cars, space exploration and solar energy. He is all of 43.

Mr. Musk is about as close as we have, circa 2015, to early industrial titans like Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Along with his swagger, he totes surprise, style and wit. Tesla’s Model S sedan was not only Motor Trend’s car of the year in 2013 — the first non-internal-combustion engine vehicle to win that award — but it also has a sound system that, in a homage to the film “Spinal Tap,” you can turn up to 11.

“Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future” isn’t the first biography we’ve had of Mr. Musk, nor will it be the last. But it is easily the richest to date. It’s also the first one Mr. Musk has cooperated with, though he had no control, the author says, over its contents. Mr. Vance is a technology writer for Bloomberg Businessweek . He won over Mr. Musk, who initially declined to be interviewed, impressing him with his diligence after he had interviewed some 200 people.

The result is a book that is smart, light on its feet and possesses a crunchy thoroughness. Mr. Vance can occasionally veer toward hagiography and the diction of news releases. After noting that Mr. Musk’s grand vision is to colonize Mars, for example, Mr. Vance writes:

“He’s the possessed genius on the grandest quest anyone has ever concocted. He’s less a C.E.O. chasing riches than a general marshaling troops to secure victory. Where Mark Zuckerberg wants to help you share baby photos, Musk wants to ... well ... save the human race from self-imposed or accidental annihilation.” As the Beast from “X-Men” likes to remark, Oh my stars and garters.
